• RegEx/Javascript validation: Don't allow comma as a valid character

  I'm doing Javascript validation on my number fields. I'm using RegEx to do this - first time RegEx user. I need the user to only enter numbers and decimals, but not commas. (i.e. 3600.00 is okay, but 3,600.00 is not). I can't figure out how to eliminate the commas as an accepted character. Any help is appreciated. • Flex 4 how to layout spark controls in an html table type way

  I have a group of controls and I want to organize them in a table like fashion. I want 1 row and 6 columns. Col 1,3,4,5,6 should all auto size to the contents and col 2 should take up the remaining available space. When the size of the group changes, only col2 width should change. I also want to be able to set the alignment of each cell. How can I do this in flex 4? I found a reference to mx:constraintColumns but this seems to be used with the canvas and in flex 4 adobe suggests not using canvases. Is there something similar in flex 4? I'm looking for something along the lines of Grid/Grid.ColumnDefinitions in silverlight.

• Fully custom validation error message with Rails

  Using Rails I'm trying to get an error message like "The song field can't be empty" on save. Doing the following: validates_presence_of :song_rep_xyz, :message => "can't be empty" ... only displays "Song Rep XYW can't be empty", which is not good because the title of the field is not user friendly. How can I change the title of the field itself ? I could change the actual name of the field in the database, but I have multiple "song" fields and I do need to have specific field names. I don't want to hack around rails' validation process and I feel there should be a way of fixing that.

  I have a Windows Forms app that, unfortunately, must make calls to controls from a second thread. I've been using the thread-safe pattern described on the http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms171728.aspx. Which has worked great in the past. The specific problem I am having now: I have a WebBrowser control and I'm attempting to invoke the WebBrowser.Navigate() method using this Thread-Safe pattern and as a result I am getting StackOverflow exceptions.   I wanted to add reCaptcha to the comment form, but only for non-authenticated users. I've created my own comments app, using reCaptcha more or less according to this post, except that I don't have any (explicit) view function to post the comment, but instead I check captcha as a part of form validation process. Everything works fine so far. Now, how do I disable reCaptcha for a logged in user? Removing all reCaptcha-related fields in the template is no problem, but how do I validate the form, not checking captcha if the comment if from an authenticated user? Alternatively, is there a way to use two different comment form classes, depending on whether the user is authenticated or not?

  I'm working on an app which supports live editing. That is you update properties in one area and their impact is seen in another with hitting "apply". Happens to be a charting app. One such edit "group" allows specifying a range. A triple range in fact: High, Target and Low. Our validation is such that High must be greater than target, target must be greater than Low (rocket science). Our dilemma is that the visual experience is a bit jarring when someone wants to go from say 30,20,10 to 15,10,5. I'm curious if anyone has implemented a mechanism for this scenario that might fit well in our situation such that we don't "yell" at the user as they change the range values.

• how do I notify child controls of a change in the parent

  what is the best way to keep a child control up to date for changes in the parent. I have a number of child controls hosted inside my parent object and I can think of two ways to send change information to them. 1) wire the child control to an event in the parent. and fire that event on a change in the parent 2) keep a list of the children in an array and intenerate through the array when the change has happened and invoke a method in the child to handle the new changes. I hope I describe it okay. both work but there is probably a right way to handle this and a wrong way.

  I have a controller/model hypothetically named Pets. Pets has the following declarations: :belongs_to owner :has_many dogs :has_many cats Not the best example, but again, it demonstrates what I'm trying to solve. Now when a request comes in as an HTTP POST to http://127.0.0.1/pets, I want to create an instance of Pets. The restriction here is, if the user doesn't submit at least one dog or one cat, it should fail validation. It can have both, but it can't be missing both. How does one handle this in Ruby on Rails? Dogs don't care if cats exists and the inverse is also true. Can anyone show some example code of what the Pets model would look like to ensure that one or the other exists, or fail otherwise? errors.add also takes an attribute, in this case, there is no particular attribute that's failing. It's almost a 'virtual' combination that's missing.

• How to make some simple GUI controls?

  I need to make a DirectX or OpenGL app and i will need a custom GUI for that. I think a button, a input text box, a list box (that will need a scroll bar as there will be more items that can fit on the screen) and a slider control will be enough. I know about CeGUI framework but i just don't like it, way too many XML files for my taste. My question is where should i start in learning how to do this custom GUI controls, are there any tutorial available or any material that could get me started? • ASP.NET Controls with Highly Customizable GUI

  We are developing an ASP.NET web application where some of the features that we will need to implement are quite standard: for example, a chat between users, a forum, etc. There are ASP.NET chats and forums components available. However, they all have a predetermined GUI and html markup that is almost impossible to change and very difficult to customize. And this is a very common situation for most controls like grids, etc.: you have very low control over the html markup that is being generated by the control. In our case, our web app will have its own web design created by a professional web designer in PhotoShop, and then it will but transformed into html markup that will then be transformed in aspx pages. We would ideally like to create the html markup for the forum and chat by ourselves, and use only the non-GUI part of the ASP.NET components. Is this approach feasible? Has anyone dealt with such approach in practice?

  I'm brainstorming some ideas around a pattern to use for the following scenario. I have some 3rd party controls that I want to add common functionality to. Functionality is added by handling several of the the events and doing certain things when the events fire along with adding some private variables to hold some state info between events. I want to reuse the code and functionality so this is what I'd typically do. Create a class for this functionality and pass in the instance of the control that I want to add the functionality to in the constructor. Then I can add event handlers to the control in the instance of the class. Can anyone think of alternative patterns to use in order to create this kind of reusable functionality.

  I have a page I need to build out where depending on the selection the user made on a form on the page prior it displays a different set of questions for them to answer. So say the user selects Reason A from the form on page edit, then it needs to display Questions 1 and 2 on page edit_confirmation. But if they select Reason B then it needs to display Questions 3 and 4. I'm grabbing the reason code from the query string and have a switch statement set up, but I can't find anywhere how to output different controls. If Questions 1 and 2 are supposed to show up, one could be a text box and the other a checkbox, but if questions 3 and 4 are supposed to show up one may need to be a dropdown list and a checkbox.

  My application is loading a bunch of the same user control into a ScrollPanel. The problem is, this is very slow. The profiler show that the method Application.LoadComponent(), which is called internally by in the designer code in the constructor of my user control, is the bottleneck. The documentation of this method says, that this method load XAML files. I alway though the compiler compiles XAML to BAML and embedds it into the assembly. So the question is, how can I use BAML instead of XAML? Is there another way to make loading my user controls faster?

• Database Schema Validation - deployable/compilable

  Looking for a tool that will allow building database schema validation that can be compiled into a standalong tool or as a module to be used in another application. The scenario is - a client/server application that is sold to customers, and maintained through service releases. The service releases include database scripts to updated the database with any schema changes etc. However, since this is a database and the customer could either run upgrade scripts incorrectly, or tinker around and mess up something in the DB I would like to have this tool available with each release so we can verify the struture, and possibly some data, is valid. Also to have it available for remote debugging when a customer has a service ticket. Schema compare tools I've researched work great for comparing local databases, but I haven't seen something that can generate something that is deployable with our application. Thanks!
