    I have a table "Families", like so FamilyID PersonID Relationship ----------------------------------------------- F001 P001 Son F001 P002 Daughter F001 P003 Father F001 P004 Mother F002 P005 Daughter F002 P006 Mother F003 P007 Son F003 P008 Mother and I need output like FamilyID PersonID Father Mother ------------------------------------------------- F001 P001 P003 P004 F001 P002 P003 P004 F001 P003 F001 P004 F002 P005 P006 F002 P006 F003 P007 P008 F003 P008 In which the PersonID of the Father and Mother for a given PersonID are listed (if applicable) in separate columns. I know this must be a relatively trivial query to write (and therefore to find instructions for), but I can't seem to come up with the right search terms. Searching "SQL recursive queries" has gotten me closest, but I can't quite translate those methods to what I'm trying to do here. I'm trying to learn, so multiple methods are welcome, as is vocabulary I should read up on. Thanks!

  • Strange/simple batch question regarding Java/Ant

    For my company, I'm making a batch script to go through and compile the latest revisions of code for our current project. I'm using Ant to build the class files, but encountered a strange error. One of the source files imports .* from a directory, where there are no files (only folders), and in fact, the folders needed are imported right after. It compiles perfectly fine in Eclipse, but I'm using an Ant script to automate it outside of the IDE, and Javac throws an error when it encounters this line. Is there any automated procedure I can use to ignore/suppress this error with javac in Ant? I'd even go so far as to create a dummy file in the importing directory, but all of that in contained in a Jar file I don't wish to have to decompress and then recompress with the dummy file.     Hi, I'm puzzled by some behaviour I'm seeing when copying a float array member into another variable - please help! For example data_entry[1] = 9.6850069951 new_value = data_entry[1] <comment> #print both 9.6850069951 9.6850663300 I'm aware of the problem of binary storage of floats but I thought with a direct copy of memory we would end up with the same value.     Hi, I am working through an example in Java Concurrency in Practice and am not understanding why a concurrent-safe container is necessary in the following code. I'm not seeing how the container "locations" 's state could be modified after construction; so since it is published through an 'unmodifiableMap' wrapper, it appears to me that an ordinary HashMap would suffice. EG, it is accessed concurrently, but the state of the map is only accessed by readers, no writers. The value fields in the map are syncronized via delegation to the 'SafePoint' class, so while the points are mutable, the keys for the hash, and their associated values (references to SafePoint instances) in the map never change. I think my confusion is based on what precisely the state of the collection is in the problem.     I have a basic XML object that I'm working with. I can't figure out how to access the parts of it.   • Newbie question: undefined local variable or method , why??

    I am new in Rails (I am using Rails 3.0.3), currently I am following the book "Agile Web Development with Rails" to develop a simple rails application. I followed the book to: --create a model 'Cart' class; --implement 'add_to_cart' method in my 'store_controller', I have a line of code <%=button_to "Add to Cart", :action => add_to_cart, :id => product %> in my /store/index.html.erb As you see, there is :action => add_to_cart in my index.html.erb, which will invoke the add_to_cart method in my *Controllers/store_controller.rb* But after I refresh the browser, I got the error "undefined local variable or method 'add_to_cart'", apparently I do have the method add_to_cart in my 'store_controller.rb', why I got this error??? What is the possible cause???   • Basic Question on storing variables c# for use in other classes

    Ok guys I basically have a class which takes in 3 strings through the parameter of one of its method signatures. I've then tried to map these 3 strings to global variables as a way to store them. However, when I try to call these global variables from another class after instantiating this class they display as null values. this is the class which gets the 3 strings through the method setDate, and the mapping.. public class DateLogic { public string year1; public string month1; public string day1; public DateLogic() { } public void setDate(string year, string month, string day) { year1 = year; month1 = month; day1 = day; // getDate(); } public string getDate() { return year1 + " " + month1 + " " + day1; } } After this I try call this class from here public static string TimeLine2(this HtmlHelper helper, string myString2) { DateLogic g = new DateLogic(); string sday = g.day1; string smonth = g.month1; string syr = g.year1; } I've been debugging and the values make it all the way to the global variables but when called from this class here it doesnt show them, just shows null. Is this cause I'm creating a brand new instance, how do i resolve this?

    I'm trying to select a series of divs one at a time. I'm sure theres a better way to do this, but I gave them all unique rels and I'm using the rels to select them one at a time. I want to move them over the width of the div, then animate it dropping down the screen.     This may be a bit winded because I am new to wpf. I have created a partial class for an entity in my L2S class that is primarily used for validation. It implements the onchanging and onvalidate methods. I am trying to use the MVVM pattern, and in a window/view I have set the datacontext in the xaml: <Window.DataContext> <vm:StartViewModel /> </Window.DataContext> when a user leaves a required field in the view blank, the onchanging event of the partial class is fired when I close the form, not when I save the data. So, if a user leaves the textbox blank, the old value is retained and the onchaging method is fired, but I have no idea how to alert the user of the resulting error. here is my onchanging code in the partial class: partial void Ondocument_titleChanging(string value) { if (value.Length == 0) throw new Exception("Document title is required."); if (value.Length > 256) throw new Exception("Document title cannot be longer than 256 characters."); } throwing an exception doesn't notify the user of the error. it just allows the form to close and rejects the changes to the textbox. hope this makes sense... edit: this example was taken from Scott Guthries article here: http://aspalliance.com/1427_LINQ_to_SQL_Part_5__Binding_UI_using_the_ASPLinqDataSource_Control.5

  • Question about Architecture for Viewing Images in ASP.NET MVC App

    I have an approach in mind for an image viewer in a web app, and want to get a sanity check and any thoughts you stackoverflowers might have. Here's the whirlwind nutshell summary: I'm working on an ASP.NET MVC application that will run in my company's retail stores. Even though it is a web application, we own the store machines and have control over them. We have a "windows agent" running on the store machine which we can talk to from the browser via javascript (it is a WCF service, and our web app has permission to talk to it from the browser). One of the web pages needs to be an "image viewer" page with some common things like Rotate & Zoom. Now, there are some WebForms controls that offer Rotate and Zoom. However, they take up server resources and generate a good bit of traffic between the server and the browser. For example, the Rotate function would cause an ajax call to the server, which would then generate a new image written to a .NET Canvas object, which would then be written to a file on the server, which would then be returned from the ajax call and refreshed inside the browser. Normally, that's a pretty good way of doing things. But in our case, we have code running on the store machine that we can communicate with. This leads me to consider the following approach: When the user asks to view an image, we tell our "windows agent" to download it from our image server to the store machine. We then redirect our browser to our image viewer page, which will pull the image from the local file we just wrote to the store machine. When the user clicks "Rotate", we cause JavaScript code in the browser to call our "windows agent" software, asking it to perform the "Rotate" function. The "windows agent" does the rotation using the same kind of imaging control that would formerly have been used on the server, but it does so now on the store machine. Javascript in the browser then refreshes the image on the page to show the newly rotated image. Zoom and similar features would be implemented the same way. This seems to be much more efficient, scalable, and responsive for the end-users. However, I've never heard of anything like it being done, mostly because it's rare to have this combination of a web app plus a "windows agent" on the client machine. What do you think? Feasible? Reasonable? Any pitfalls I overlooked or improvements / suggestions you can see? Has anyone done anything like this who would like to offer the wisdom of experience? Thanks!

    Hi, I have houses that belongs to streets. A user can buy several houses. How do I find out, if the user owns an entire street? street table with columns (id/name) house table with columns (id/street_id [foreign key] owner table with columns (id/house_id/user_id) [join table with foreign keys] So far, I'm using count which returns the result: select count(*), street_id from owner left join house on owner.house_id = house.id group by street_id where user_id = 1 count(*) | street_id 3 | 1 2 | 2 A more general count: select count(*) from house group by street_id returns: count(*) | street_id 3 | 1 3 | 2 How can I find out, that user 1 owns the entire street 1 but not street 2?   • summer experiment: GWT & python for a trading game- arch question

    Hi, As a summer learning experiment, I'm thinking of coding up a web front end for a trading game i wrote in python, that generates share prices and random snippets of text. I am sort of struggling with how this should work on the back-end though. I'd rather have my GWT client page interact with the python share price generator, than to try and re-code it in java. I suppose i could use an sqlite db, and then use jdbc to pick up the prices, but i was wondering if there is a better way, for me to be able to poll some python script either from my client page, or from the serverside java code ? Given the following url: www.mydomain.com/contentitem/234 I need to map all requests that come to /contentitem/{numeric value} mapped to a given controller with the "numeric value" passed as a parameter to the controller. Right now in my servlet container xml I have simple mappings similar to the following: ... <entry key="/index.html"> <ref bean="homeController" /> </entry> ... I am just wondering what I need to add to the mapping in order to achieve what I described? Edit: I unaccepted the answer temporarily because I can't seem to figure out how to do the mapping in my web.xml (I am using annotations as described in axtavt's answer below). How do I add a proper <url-pattern>..</url-pattern> in my <servlet-mapping> so that the request for "/contentitem/{numeric_value}" gets properly picked up? Thanks!
