• Windows 7 stopped connecting to samba share

  I have a problem with Windows 7 Home connecting to samba on linux server. It's worked fine for a year and without any changes in configuration or updates it suddenly stopped working. The strangest thing for me is that it stopped working for no reason that I could think of. After a few minutes after trying to connect I get: \\ip is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Other computers in that network (XP machines) connect to samba without any problem. I've tried adding LmCompatibilityLevel as described here: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/75-63-windows-samba-issue , but it didn't help.

• Remap Apple MacBook Eject key in Windows?

  I have a MacBook with Windows 7 on it as my daily driver. My MacBook has a nearly useless Eject key, but I wish it was a forward delete key. KeyRemap4Macboook works great in OS X. Is there any software that is equivalent in Windows? I have tried KeyTweaks and HotKeys and neither of them will recognize the Eject key. I looked it up and I think it is key 161. Is there any way to make the key into a more useful forward delete? Could I just go into the registry and do it that way?

• Customize side panel in Internet Explorer 9/Windows 7

  I use Internet Explorer 9 with all the horizontal toolbars except the tab bar invisible to maximize vertical space. I have plenty of room at the side so I have the Favorites/Feeds/History panel open, usually on Favorites to replace the Favorites bar. I'd like to customize the shortcuts in this panel to display as large icons, similar to when you set the display in Windows Explorer to Large Icons and, long shot... change the backround color. The side panel does appear to be just a Windows Explorer window but it seems immune to any kind of tampering or customization, mainly because right clicking is disabled on the empty space. Changing browsers is not going to happen but can someone help out here?

  When I make a restore point and I come back to restore the windows 7, it gives this error: No restore point have been created on your computer system drives, to create a restore point open system protection. I've made a restore point why does it give this error? What should I do? I completely know how to make restore points and I've made some on the laptop and other devices but in my computer which have windows 7 when I make restore point and when I want to use them it gives the error! Please help. I'm not English so can't speak it well.

• Copy files between two windows machines on seperate domains

  I need to copy several database backups between two computers. The source computer initiates the copy and is a Windows 2000 pc and is a member of domain1. The destination machine is running Windows Server 2000 and is a member of domain2. The machines are on separate networks physically connected via a firewall. The files are currently copied via ssh with http://sshwindows.sourceforge.net/ installed on the destination machine. There is no need to encrypt the contents during the copy, however the passwords should not be sent in the clear. I am looking for a way to copy the files without having to install a server on the destination. I specifically need help with how to set up the permissions and what ports would need to be opened on the firewall.

• Windows 2003 and 2008 AD integrated DNS zones

  We have a Windows 2003 server DC1 which is our primary DC holding all FSMO roles. It also is a DNS server for our domain domain.local which is an active directory integrated zone. We also have a Windows 2008 DC name DC2 All servers have the correct DNS entries etc. However on all dns servers there are event id 4515 indicating there are duplicate zones in separate directory partitions and only one will be used until the other is removed. And I see these, there is a zone for domain.local under the default naming partition CN=System, CN=MicrosoftDNS, DC=domain.local. As well as the DomainDNSZones partition DC=DomainDNSZones, DC=DOMAIN, DC=local, CN=MicrosoftDNS It seems that the partition in the Default Naming partition is the one which is being used currently.   Is there a command line interface to Windows Media Center in Windows 7. I have an SSH daemon installed on my media center box and would love to be able log in via SSH and get the list of upcoming recordings. As it is, I need to use Remote Desktop and then tell Media Center to run in GDI mode to display the upcoming recordings which is slow and cumbersome. Here are interesting commands that I'm wondering about: List upcoming recordings List most recent recordings Status of scheduler I'd rather not have to install Remote Potato to accomplish this.

• Windows Phone 8 not interfacing with Zune software

  I just got a Lumia 521 with Windows Phone 8 and am trying to get the device to work with the Zune software on my PC. I still have my Windows Phone 7 device, and the new one is not working the same way. When I plug the WP7 device into the PC's USB port, it automatically fires up Zune and I can sync my podcasts and music etc to the device. But when I plug the Lumia into the PC it doesn't fire up Zune, and if I start Zune manually, it doesn't interface with the phone at all. Perhaps I am missing something and WP8 isn't supposed to use Zune to interface with the phone?

• Windows 7 - Add folder to Explorer Favorites navigation pane from the Command Line

  In Windows 7 is there a way to add a location to the Explorer Favorites navigation pane from the command line? I'm working with systems that are frequently re-imaged, and I would like to automate adding a number of favorite folders to explorer. I imagine these favorites are also stored in the registry. If someone knows where, I could probably automate managing them through the reg command, although this is less than ideal. I've looked at a number of locations related to explorer suggested here, but haven't found them yet. • Auto log off windows machine after certain number of minutes

  I have three machines on my network, two are windows xp and one is windows 7. i would like to have all three machines log a user off if they are on for more than 60 minutes. And I would like this to be applied to the machine not on a per user basis, because I do not want this policy to apply to those users on any other machine. I have installed winexit.scr on one of the machines but the problem is that I cannot change the default value of 10 minutes for the screensaver because that is controlled through group policy, and I cannot seem to find where to change that through group policy on a per machine basis NOT on a per user basis. If I have left out any details I apologize please let me know anything that is needed

• Displaying unicode character U+2661 ("White Heart Suit") in Windows 7

  I can't get this character: ? to display properly in Windows Explorer, it instead shows up as a symbol of three lines, similar to this ?. The strangest thing is that if i use the heart symbol beside another unusual symbol, such as one of these: ??????, it will display correctly as a heart; yet if I delete the symbol which is next to the heart it will revert to the 3 lines symbol. All of these other symbols display correctly when used alone. Does anybody else have this problem? Is it possible that Windows has 2 different characters listed for U+2661? Thanks for any help

• Windows Server 2003 - passwordless access to \\myhost\ but not \\myhost.mydomain.net\

  I have a Windows Server 2003 system on which passwordless access to local UNC paths is possible using the server's unqualified hostname or its IP address, but not via its FQDN -- even when the hosts file is used to map that FQDN directly to 127.0.0.1. That is: \\127.0.0.1\ - passwordless \\myhost\ - passwordless \\myhost.mydomain.com\ - brings up an authentication dialog Unfortunately, I have a local application trying to resolve UNC paths including the host's FQDN. I've tried resolving myhost.mydomain.com to 127.0.0.1 in both hosts and lmhosts, and calling ping myhost.mydomain.com at the command prompt gives the appearance that this resolution has taken effect; even so, attempting to open \\myhost.mydomain.com\ from Windows Explorer brings up a password prompt, while \\127.0.0.1\ does not. The system is using an OpenDirectory server (Apple's Kerberos+LDAP directory service) for authentication.

• Fixing/Extending Standard Windows File Open/Save Dialog [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Change left side link of the Save As Dialog for a DropBox one? Almost every time I use the standard Windows (XP) File Open/Save Dialog I get frustrated in how long it takes me to navigate to where I want to go. :-( (I won't even get into the MS Office dialog that makes things even worse) This is the dialog I'm referring to (with some notes) Notes: Wouldn't a Drive list be handy in here? C:\, D:\, E:\, etc. What about a breadcrumb URI? (the magenta list of links) Why isn't Program Files one of the icons on the left? (green) I'm always going in there for something Why can't I type "../../../" to navigate up multiple directories in the File name box? (blue) There has got to be some utilities out there that can "hijack" or "overwrite" this core windows dialog to provide a much better set of options. I'm looking for any/all solutions to help fix this dialog.

• HTTP 401 error in Windows Authentication disappears after swapping Providers

  The IIS 7 on Windows 2008 R2 is acting really weird. We deploy our web apps as web sites with appcmd.exe. After they are deployed, if I browse to them, I'll get HTTP 401 errors. The web sites are only have Windows Authentication enabled and the providers are Negotiate and NTLM in such order. But if I swap the providers, the HTTP 401 error goes away. Even if I swap it back, the errors are still gone. So the order of the providers doesn't seem to matter, what matters is the swapping. It must have triggered something. Even if we delete the web site and application pool and reinstall the web sites, the errors are still gone. So far, we can't reproduce it easily since it happens randomly. Has anyone experienced this? How do I go about to troubleshoot it?

• Joining Windows 7 Professional to a Windows Server 2003 R2 x64 domain fails.

  I have a windows 7 professional (spanish) laptop trying to join a Windows Server 2003 (english) domain. It detect correctly the SRV record, finding the proper domain controller, but then the join fails with the error message (snippet, because the error is in spanish) An Active Directory Domain Controller for This Domain Could Not be Contacted The DNS is correctly set, and client can ping by name and IP the server, the server can ping the client by IP. I've tested with the FW down to no avail. A host of other XP Pro clients are connected to the domain. I've restarted Net Logon and checked that Windows Time is up. Also the times are in sync between the server and the client. I'll put below diagnostics output. I'm wondering if there's anything special to be done on either the server or the client to have a Win 7 Pro join a 2k3 R2 domain. • Windows 7 libraries missing from start menu?

  I was trying to stop an annoying error where renaming a new folder in Windows 7 (Starter OEM via Toshiba) would bring up the dreaded "cannot find item" error. I was lead to uninstall Windows update KB980408 with the added registry fix. Well, now the problem is still unfixed, but worse, all the libraries have vanished from the right side of my start menu! This is a pretty aggravating state of affairs, and I've already tried a system restore, adding back in some registry keys, changing preferences...the smash. Funnily enough, libraries are still in explorer and I can see that according to preferences they are displaying, but...nada. Any suggestions?

• Large .tmp files in C:\Windows\Temp

  I have a Windows 2008 server which functions as a web service server, and every other week or so, the C:\Windows\Temp folder is filled with large (between 40-300 meg) files with names like: ~DF5D73.tmp, ~DFA95.tmp, etc. They appear My webservices on the server don't create any files with that type of name, and the contents don't appear to help identify them. Process Explorer indicates that w3wp.exe is currently using several of the files, but I can't imagine specifically where they're coming from.   How I can limit UDP/TCP packets per IP send to my host (or better PORT) per second or minute ? Would be nice to ban that IP for 12/24 hours or even for ever. I got Windows Server 2008 and I'm very poor in Windows administration but quite good in Linux. EDIT: By basic problem is that They sending a lot of rubbish UPD and TCP packets.. TCP packets without SYNCH, fragmented UDP packets so my servers stop responding.. So I need to cut off users (IPs) sending more than X packets per second. I need solution witch provides me, somehow, configurable: X packets of certain type (UDP, TCP or both - lets say parameter named Z ) are allowed to be received by IP on Y port, otherwise this packet should be DROPPED. My virtual hosts are hosted by VirtualBox and I'm able to forward all incoming packets certain type and certain port to the specific Virtual Host, but I need to DROP them before my VirtualBox receive them.

  I recently got a 64 bit ubuntu server based on Ubuntu Desktop 12.04 "Precise Pangolin". However I can't seem to connect to it properly from my windows 7 64 bit machine. I can get to the login screen for ubuntu, and it seems to succeed in logging in, but then the screen just goes grey before anything comes up. (too low rep to post a picture) I installed xrdp on the server and attempt to connect using the standard windows Remote Desktop Connection program. I also ran the following 2 commands on the ubuntu machine to try get it to run but it was no help. echo "gnome-session --session=ubuntu-2d" > ~/.xsession and sudo apt-get install gnome-session-fallback

  On a new install of Windows Server 2008, I attempting to use ssh to connect to another host. I have installed putty/openssh. • When browsing a specific network share remotely, Windows Explorer continuously jumps back to the parent folder

  I am accessing a specific network path on another domain. It looks something like this: \\CoputerName.OtherDomain.in\c$\Inetpub\Testing\Website\ In under 30 seconds, I am automatically jumped back to \\CoputerName.OtherDomain.in\c$\Inetpub\Testing\ In less time it then jumps back to \\CoputerName.OtherDomain.in\c$\Inetpub\ Then it jumps back to c$ for its final resting place. \\CoputerName.OtherDomain.in\c$\ At first I thought this had to with a faulty keyboard, but this behaviour also occurs when the window does not have focus. It's as if windows thinks that the folder no longer exists (as in someone else has deleted or moved it). This behaviour is not specific to my PC either, it occurs from other machines in the office. Edit: It looks like this issue only occurs from other Windows 7 machines. There are no issues accessing the path from XP.

• Windows 7 PC refuses to join domain

  So, we're wiping clean all PCs at our office and migrating them to a new server cluster and a new domain. Last night I tested on PC and it mostly worked except it refuses to join to the domain. Now, our domain is named like EXAMPLE.COM. When I just type EXAMPLE the PC can't find the domain controller, even though I can ping it find. If I type EXAMPLE.COM it seems to work. How can I get it to work with just EXAMPLE? That's how I got all the new servers int he cluster to work (about 20 of them) and I haven't had any issues... The only difference between the Windows 7 PC(s) and the servers is that the clients will be on a 10.0.3.X network where as the servers are on a 10.0.1.X network. Oh, the domain controller and all the other servers are Windows Server 2008 R2. Suggestions will be highly appreciated!

  Ordered a PC from HP with Windows 7 Professional 64-bit preinstalled, of course. No Win7 disc was included with computer. There are no games installed. I have tried to "activate" them through the Control Panel procedure, but each time I do it there is an error message telling me that not all components installed. And my Games folder is empty. Is there a solution? Synetech asked what I meant by "activate through Control Panel." I'm referring to the "Turn windows features on" procedure that's supposed to work for everybody. I'm sure it does for most, but it didn't for me.
