• Windows 8 to 8.1 Pro Upgrade SecureBoot Error

  I upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. I have an Alienware Aurora R4 with the latest BIOS firmware version, A09. Ever since I did the upgrade, I get a watermark on my desktop saying, "SecureBoot isn't configured correctly"...I would like to get rid of this watermark the correct way (not by hacking system DLLs). My BIOS shows me booting in UEFI mode, and I see that SecureBoot is actually disabled from there. I cannot enable SecureBoot, in either UEFI mode or Legacy Boot mode. Note, I can't even get Legacy Boot mode working without re-formatting my system which I really don't plan on doing, so my question is this...what has changed in the way Windows handles SecureBoot? As far as I can tell, I do not have SecureBoot enabled, and it is trying to tell me that it isn't configured correctly. Why does it even care to check if my BIOS doesn't have it on anyways?! Its so frustrating!

• Connecting to Windows 7 from fedora is slow

  I use rdesktop command to connect to windows 7 machine remotely but I get a very slow reponse when I try and connent to it. The command that I used to connect to it is rdesktop -4 -C -x -b : -g 100% 192.168.1.100. I have tried using the rdesktop command to connect to the console port as well but the result is the same. I have even tried using the Terminal server client application the result is the same. I am trying to connect from fedora 14 machine to windows 7 professional is there any tweaking that needs to be done to overcome this issue either on fedora or Windows 7.

• Windows VPN - NO internet access

  I host a network of servers behind a Fortigate 200a firewall in the DC. I connect to those servers via a VPN connection. The problem is that when i connect to the VPN, I lose my internet connection on the local PC (windows 7). I would like to be connected to the VPN and still surf the web. i guess this means to only forward a range of ip to the VPN connection. I've read other answers on serverfault, talking about "un-check the 'Use default gateway on remote network' option in your Windows 7 PPTP network connection settings". When i do that , i get internet access but no access to the servers in the VPN. Any idea how to get both working? Should i change something on the fortigate 200a config? Do i need two networks cards? Is there a place in windows to define ip range for the vpn connection?

• Windows 8 stuck installing update

  I just restarted my laptop to finish installing a Windows update and now it is stuck on please wait. I have tried a system restore but there is only one restore point in the list and it does not work for some reason... I also tried to do a refresh but it asks me for media. I plug in the usb I used to install windows 8 a while and go and says that the media failed to load. I'm kind of stuck on options now. I can't boot and I can't restore and it seems I cant format either! Is there anything anything else I can do to get things going?! I'm running Windows 8 on a dell xps 14 ultrabook. Win 8 is installed on an msata drive and booting using EFi.

  I downloaded the new SDK and installed on my Windows 8 instance on my dedicated Hyper-V Server. When I start the emulator I receive an error. And after some searching and reading I realised that hyper-v is not supported. Is there any possibilities that I can run my Windows phone 8 emulator on a remote Hyper-V 2012 server? What I can see, it only uses the built-in hyper-v server in windows 8 as default. Can i change it somewhere? /Davy

• Windows 8 account and MSN

  I've installed windows 8 and during setup it wanted my email. I provided an alternative email (let's call it email_1) for the installation to complete. Then I've installed windows live (msn only), for which I use another email (email_2). Now, every time I start windows and open msn, I'm signed in with email_1. I selected "forget me" for email_1 address in the msn login window, but I'm somehow always signed in with email_1. Is there any way to completely remove email_1 from the msn?

• VirtualBox error with Ubuntu virtual machine

  I am trying to work on a coding project and cannot open my Ubuntu virtual machine with Oracle VM VirtualBox. I took a snapshot yesterday at about 11, and it was working fine. Several times I closed and reopened it. Today when I tried to open it, I kept getting the error below. Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Ubuntu 12.04 32-bit. VM cannot start because the saved state file 'C:\Users\Tyler\VirtualBox VMs\Ubuntu 12.04 32-bit\Snapshots\2014-01-30T19-59-05-976647800Z.sav' is invalid (VERR_FILE_NOT_FOUND). Deleted the saved state prior to starting the VM. I tried deleting the file as it said, but none of the snapshots would open still. The file is still in my recycling bin. What can I do? Also, I took the 1/31 snapshot today before I deleted the previous one.

  I am using Windows 7. the keyboard requires appoximately 1 second of hold down before it sends the letter. the pc wil click once at the 1/2 second then at 1 second the letter will show up. I thought the keyboard was bad and I purchased a new one (usb) and the same thing happened. I pulled out an old ps/2 keyboard, and the same thing. I booted the pc up and went into bios. the keyboard works fine there. I tried unninstalling and reinstalling the drivers, no change please advise

• Unable to do Port Forwarding in Virtual Box

  I'm using Mac OS X 10.6. I have installed Virtual Box 4.1.0 in it. My Guest OS is Ubuntu Server 11.04. I have added a rule in Port Forwarding in Virtual Box - "guestssh" TCP 127.0.1.1 8080 127.0.0.1 1337 Inside Guest OS I'm running nodejs server. Code is nothing but simple helloworld code found on their site http://nodejs.org/. In short I'm running server on 127.0.0.1 on 1337 Port. Now according to rule I have given, from Host Machine all the requests for 127.0.1.1:8080 should be forwarded to 127.0.0.1:1337 of Guest OS. From Host I'm doing curl http://127.0.1.1:8080 and I'm getting curl: (7) couldn't connect to host Is there something am I doing wrong? Note- Don't give me suggestion to do ssh n all. As my ISP does not provide Internal LAN so its not possible in my case. All I can do it Port Forwarding.

Now I have since re-installed Windows to 64bit, and this application does not work, saying it's incompatible. I have tried running the application (and its other side-applications) in Windows '95 mode, but still the same message. How can I run this old app on 64bit Windows? • Windows 8 FN key doesn't work for brightness

  I have an Asus laptop with Windows 8 and fn+f5/fn+f6 keys (for brightness) doesn't work. In fact, they work, but they can increase/decrease the brightness only 1 time. I mean - after pressing fn+f5 once, nothing happens if I try to press fn+f5 again, before I press fn+f6. This only happens after logging in. At the login screen and during Windows boot I can adjust the brightness as I want, but after login I can't. I installed the latest ATK driver and NVIDIA graphics driver for Windows 8, and I think that my problem is related to conflict with drivers. I tried to reinstall/delete some drivers, but it didn't help. How can I detect where is the problem? Thanks.

  I have a Windows Vista Home Premium and I tried installing SP2 on it and It prompted me to install SP1. Then it stopped working when I installed SP1. I don't have back up that I can use to restore it. When I use the Windows Repair mode I am unable to get access to few options none of which is working. I do have access to the command prompt. Is there way to restore this? If I am planning to upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium what are the steps?

• Prevent Windows 7 from unpluging External HDD [migrated]

  I have installed Windows 7 as my media server. I pluged in 500GB external HDD via USB. I have changed power plan to Best Performance and changed advenced power settings to never turn off HDD etc. I even yesterday wrote powershell script (create and delete folder on this disk) and I have added it to harmonogram to run every 5 minutes starting from system boot. And nothing! Disk after some time (I realy can't say when) is turning off and Windows show "Unknown Device" in Device Manager. Then only system reboot or disk reboot helps. Any ideas how to prevent Windows 7 from stopping my external HDD? Cheers!

  I have a problem with my search in Windows 8. When I search through the Modern UI style (WinF) for files, it won't return a single result from none of my drives. Searching via Windows Explorer works fine. I had the same problem in Windows 8 Consumer Preview, but it worked in Developer Preview. And I looked on the net for other users with similar problems, but I haven't found anything. Is there someone who knows what the problem might be?

• Sign out of messenger on Windows 8

  I just installed the Windows 8 Consumer Preview. Just going through the default procedure, I let it use my Xbox Live account to create a user. When I then went and turned on my Xbox, it now notified me that I was logged into Messenger in two locations. I went back to Windows 8, and turned my Live account into a local account on that machine. But when I then turned the Xbox again, I got the same message. Is there a way to just 'sign out of messenger' on Windows 8? Or is there a location to even see where I am signed in at?

We tried apache mod_proxy but FTP doesn't work through it (at least not all features).   I have following problem: When I try to change size of any explorer window from maximized to some size getting following screen It blinks 20-30 times, then crashes.   I was recently given an HP Proliant Server from a friend as a gift. It has Windows Server 2003 installed on it. When I go to boot the system however to log in to Windows Server 2003 it requires an Admin password. I can't figure out the password and my friend doesn't know it either as it has been years since hes used the machine. I don't care about any of the data on the machine I just want to have a new clean version of Windows server 2003 running on it. Any advice would be helpful? • How can I migrate local users/groups from old Windows 2000 server to new Windows 2003 server?

  On a Windows 2000 box I have setup local users and one group for the purposes of ftp sites for our clients to transfer files to their own site. We are now moving to a different server running Windows 2003. I would like to be able to transfer the users/group and related folders with permissions to the new server without setting them all back up by hand. I see tools available for migrating users to Active Directory but nothing for local to local migration. How should I go about doing this? • Running Debian as a Virtual Machine Host

  I have a need to run a linux server to host subversion, bugzilla over Apache and also act as a file and print server. I also have a need to host Windows Server 2008 virtual machines for development purposes (I'm a .NET guy). The machine I have is a dual core AMD 2.5 Ghz w/2GB RAM. So here are my questions: 1) Should I run Debian (or some other distro) as the base AND create a Debian VM to host subversion, bugzilla and be my file/print server? or is it ok to use Debian as both my VM host and for those other reasons? 2) VMWare has a free server edition, Virtual Box also is another free option. Which one of these is better suited for what I need to do? Are there any other free (or inexpensive) alternatives out there? 3) Will I need a GUI with Debian in order to manage my VMs? 4) Can I run VMs without a GUI to conserve system resources?

• Windows Virtual Machine ping reply fails the first few times

  I am running a windows Web Server 2008 virtual machine. When I try to ping it from another windows machine the ping reply comes straight back with 100% success. But when I try to ping it from one of the Linux boxes, the ping reply fails with partial or 100% loss the first couple of time and succeeds the third time onwards. I know it is quite strange but can any one think anything that could be causing it. Could anything in the Windows Domain Security or Firewall be "taking time" to allow responding to the ping request? In fact even the firewall is turned off on the virtual machine.

  I have been searching for an answer to this question for a very long time. I have checked the "open folders in the same window" radio button in the general tab of folder options. I have also been told to uncheck the launch as seperate processes button in the view tab of folder options. I'm thinking some how this must be a registry issue. Anyone know a registry hack that will fix this problem and force windows explorer to open folders in the same window. I'm sick to death of having so many windows open.   To put it short: I'd like to schedule my windows updates to start/stop at certain times of day. How can I do this? More explanation: This is because my internet traffic is limited by ISP and it's free only during a specific period throughout the day (2:00am-7:00am). I've set windows update setting to check for updates but notify me before downloading in order to prevent it from automatically using up my traffic. But then I have to manually tell it when to start downloading. I obviously don't want to stay up that late just to push a button.   Hi i have installed windows 7 on my 2 year old ASUS EEE PC 1000HD. The default Operating system it came with was windows xp. Now the system is working fine but there are some display problems which i am going to state now: Firstly, during booting windows 7 logo is missing. There are no options for resolution changes. The only option possible is 800x600. The boot time is quite long when compared to xp. The graphics driver used in this system is STANDARD VGA GRAPHICS ADAPTER. The processor is intel celeron with 1GB RAM. I think with these requirements it is possible to get windows 7 with finer resolution. But why these problems are occurring?I even tried to install graphics driver provided by intel for this system. But i ve got the error message "this system doesn't meet the necessary requirements". So how to overcome this problem??
