• HBase as a multimap

  Hi guys, I'm doing some large scale text processing work and I'm trying to get started with Hadoop and HBase. One of the things I need to do is build a multimap of some stuff, which I later use to look up things and get all items with a certain key (in a M/R job). Would it be OK to use HBase and insert many rows with the same key and rely on versions/timestamps to achieve a multimap-like setup or is this a bad idea? The multimap is built up in the reduce phase of a Mapreduce task by the way, or at least in the way I've formulated it on paper. Thanks! If more information is needed, I'd be happy to provide it. Not sure whether this question is clear.

  Before I jump in at the very deep end and try to make my own version of Moon Pig (www.moonpig.com) I would like to know what (if any) software/platforms currently exist that allow for visitors to personalise cards with text and uploaded photos and then purchase printed versions all via a single e-Commerce style platform. I have Googled till my fingers bled and I cannot find anything that matches my needs, which are: admin can provide templates (backgrounds) for the cards users can customise the card with text (font style and colour) users can upload their own photos (minor editing e.g. crop) to insert into the cards user can purchase a printed card via credit card payment Seeing as this kind of e-Commerce has been around for a while now, I would have thought there were some systems to purchase that can provide this functionality?

• Poll database using jQuery/Ajax

  Hi guys, I am trying to use jQuery (latest version) & ajax to poll a mysql db every x seconds, post.php does a simple search query on the table and limits to 1 row. (eg SELECT id FROM TABLE LIMIT 1) I've got some other jQuery UI (using v1.8) code that displays some modal/dialog boxes on the screen, simply put if post.php returns something from the db I need to initialise the dialog to pop up onto the screen. I've done all the popup stuff I am just having issues joining all these bits together - i've added some pseudo code of how i expect this to work. • Database indexes - what should they be

  Most of my database tables have a clear unique index through which lookups are done 90% of the time but I am a bit unsure on this one - I have a table which keeps track of user rating totals for items in my database, I now want to add another table, to track individual ratings with an ip address column to make sure no one can rate something twice. Since I can see this becoming a big, high use table it is important to optimize it correctly. (MYSQL table) This table will have the following fields: rating_id(always - unique), item_id (always - not unique), user_id (optional - not unique), ip_address (always - not unique), rating_value(always - not unique), has_review(bool) Now I envisions 90% the queries going something like this: When a user rates something - select where item_id = x and ip_address = y, (if rows = 0) insert rating When in user account pages - select where ip_address = x or username = y Now none of the fields searched on are unique, can I still use them as indexes (for example item _id and ip_address), can I have two indexes and will this still improve performance over a non indexed table?

• Easy to use/learn PHP framework?

  I need to build a php app, and I was thinking about using a framework (never used one before). I've been browsing around some but most of them seems kinda complicated, I really liked what I saw about Symfony, but it looks like I will have to spend like a month until I really understand how to use it, and in one month I could code the app I have in mind 5 times without a framework. But I want to use one to "standardize" my code and prevent bugs. So I was wondering if someone could share with me which php frameworks you think are easier to learn how to use. My application will use mysql, and it will have some sort of "search engine" to search data that will be populated on the database using a few "scraper scripts" (that I also wants to code using the framework).

• Using virtual fields in Doctrine_Query

  Is there a way to insert logic based on virtual fields into a Doctrine_Query? I have defined a virtual field in my model, "getStatus()" which I would ultimately like to utilize in a Where clause in my Doctrine_Query. ... ->AndWhere('x.status = ?',$status); "status", however, is not a column in the table it is instead computed by business logic in the model. Filtering the Collection after executing the query works in some situations, but not when a Doctrine_Pager is thrown in the mix, as it computes it's offsets and such before you have access to the Collection. Am I best off ditching Doctrine_Pager and rebuilding that functionality after modifying the Doctrine_Collection?

• SQLITE (C/C++interface) - How to commit a transaction

  I am using sqlite c/c++ interface. Now here is my scenario - I have 3 tables (related tables) say A, B, C. Now, there is a function called Set, which get some inputs and based on the inputs inserts rows into these three tables. (sometimes it can be an update in one of the tables) Now I need two things. One, i dont want autocommit feature. Basically I would like to commit after every 1000 calls to Set function Secondly, within the set function itself, if i find that after inserting into two tables, the third insert fails, then i have to revert, those particular changes in that Set function call. Now i dont see any sqlite3_commit function exposed. I only see a function called sqlite3_commit_hook() which is slightly diff in documentation. Are there any function exposed for this purpose? or What is the way to achieve this behaviour? Can you help me with the best approach of doing this. Regards, Arjun

• JQUERY AJAX, Issues with spaces being sent to the server, y?

  I'm using the following code to post to the server which is then sent to a MYSQL query to find matches via search. $.ajax({ url: '/search/spotlight/', data: "q=" + $(this).val(), success: function(data) { } }); When Q's val has spaces in it, it's creating problems. I'm wondering if I'm handling this correctly? Do I need to encode the value in the AJAX call? Or is this a problem on my backend, which is ColdFusion Right now JQUERY is posting the following to the server: /search/spotlight/?q=FirstName%20LastName is this right?

• How can I use different metadata for a Dynamic Data form view and the list view?

  We often need a summarised list view with more detailed form view. So far, the only two way I can think of doing this are using a 'custom' list or form view than uses a sumplimentary 'remove' or 'add' list of fields anb generalise this over all entity sets, or create a custom metadata provider that infers somehow which columns to supply. Are there any other ways of distinguishing these two views? PS, I wrote a fun little general details page, that handles insert, edit, and view, all on one page template. Maybe I could somehow use that? It's here.

  in mysql i use JOIN and one query is no problem. what about mongo? imagine categories and products. products may have more categories. categories may have more product. (many to many structure) and administrator may edit categories in administration (categories must be separated) its possible write product with categories names in one query? i used this structure categories { name:"categoryName", product_id:["4b5783300334000000000aa9","5783300334000000000aa943","6c6793300334001000000006"] } products { name:"productName", category_id:["4b5783300334000000000bb9","5783300334000000000bb943","6c6793300334001000000116"] } now i can simply get all product categories, and product in some category and categories alone for editation. but if i want write product with categories names i need two queries - one to get product categories id and second to get categories names from categories by that ids. is this the right way? or this structure is unsuitable? i would like to have only one query but i dont know if its possible.

• Memcachedb Versus MongoDB Versus CouchDB in terms of file based caching solution?

  We need a caching solution that essentially caches data (text files) anywhere from 3 days up to a week based on user preferences and criteria. In this case memory based caching does not make sense to us. We were referred to MemcacheDB however I also thought of some NO SQL solutions. Our current application uses RDMS (MYSQL) and I guess it makes sense to use MemcacheDB however NOSQL does appeal as it is something more on the horizon. However we have not deployed a production level application under NOSQL and the beta stuff does not settle well with management/investors. Any how what are your thoughts and how would you address it? • Pass information to php file from javascript while restricting user from doing it their self?

  I am making a game where the battle system uses javascript to battle. At the end of the battle you either win or lose. If the user wins, I need to update the mysql database with the XP they earned. The best way I can think of doing this is to have the javascript run an ajax function when the user wins that POSTs something like addxp.php?amount=235, but if I do that then the user can easilly look at the source and see that they can just enter in that page themself to update their xp without battling. But this is the only way I know how to do it? Help please :-/

  Quick Background Since learning basic html 5 years ago, I've become completely obsessed with the technology, the logic, and the thrill of solving problems involved with building websites. I am still stuck at a thoroughly non-programming type job, but would really like to move into the field of web programming/design. I have no educational background in the field (was trained as a fine artist and tutor), but in the past few years have progressed fully self-taught (and self-motivated) from html to css to php, mysql, jquery, and am now building rich web applications. The Question How can I prove to a company that even though I have no education, I have a passion to learn whatever is thrown my way? ...That essentially I would come at every issue with not only knowledge, but with a passionate desire to solve it, whether that means tackling a new language or debugging code for hours at a time? p.s. • printf not passing correct Hex Address to stack

  I have a hickup in using printf . I am on ubuntu 10.04. Basically i have a C program asking for some input and then prints it back. It is OK for printing something after inputing. I tried to insert some Hex Address to Stack by following format:- printf "hello world!\x12\x23\x34" | ./input1 But i don't know what is the problem. If i give only string beyond 12 bytes it overwrites BUT If I give hex address(through printf), it doesn't overwrite on return address. Instead it stores some other thing. Could anyone help??? • How and when to log account access login with PHP?

  I want to implement a basic login system in some PHP app where no cookies will be involved. I mean, the user closes the browser and the login expires, it will remain active during the browser session (or if the user explicitly logs out) otherwise. I want to log all this activity and I'm thinking that every time the user refreshes the page, opens a different link or logs out, I record that time as the last access made by that user, overwriting the previous access log. But my problem is when and how should I insert another record into the database instead of overwriting the last one? Should I just define a timeout and if the last access was made above that timeout, another log should be inserted into the database? Should the session expire too after that timeout? Or is there a better way? Ideally, I would like to log the "log out action" when the browser was closed, but I don't think there's a way to detect that is there? Suggestions?
