• Typical text encoding+BOM, and EOL behavior on mobile devices

  Typical things to worry about when dealing with text are the BOM/signature, encoding, and the end of line (EOL) char/chars. I know that Windows often favours \r\n (CR+LF) and Mac/Linux favours \n (LF), but how about mobile devices such as the iPhone and Android? Do typical apps on those platforms favour one or the other? Also, which text encodings are mobiles most likely to use - UTF-8, iso-8859-1, or even Windows 1252 (or other default codepage) or maybe even UTF-16? And if they use UTF-8/16, are they likely to need (or require not having) a BOM/signature? What is the typical behavior here?

• Enable wifi on my computer - firmware missing

  I am attempting to set up a wireless network on 11.04, freshly download today. The router is on and working. However, I do not have a wifi "card" (which I am assuming is a little USB-type thing that allows internet access, but correct me if I am wrong) and every time I try to type in the MAC address and everything, nothing works. I also get the "firmware missing" error when I scroll over the signal strength, which I have tried looking up but have been unsuccessful with completely understanding it. I guess my main question is do I need another little device to be able to use wifi on my ubuntu? I do have an ethernet cable but another person is using it and I do not want to be tied down to that cable. the problem is that none of the wireless networks show up, however they show up when I go into Windows mode on my laptop. I get an error message at the top saying "firmware missing" which I have tried looking up but still have no straight answer for.

I really loved Vim after I saw all the awesome things that you can do with it and this is the perfect moment to learn how to use it. PS: It would be a lot better if it has a Kindle or ePub version

• Problem with Ogmo Editor (is Tiled Editor a solution?)

  I made a level editor for a puzzle game with Ogmo Editor and gave it to our designer/level designer. When he downloaded and started Ogmo, his CPU went to 100%. I looked at my CPU usage while Ogmo is running, and it goes from 20% to 30% (which is also high for an application alike Ogmo). He has a Windows 7 VM running on his Mac and I have a normal Windows PC, can this be a problem? I found a thread on FlashFunk forum that confirms that Ogmo has CPU usage issues. Has anybody maybe solved this issue? The solution seems to use Tiled Editor, but I never used it before. Is it difficult to change a level editor from Ogmo to Tiled? Can they export in the same format (XML with CSV elements for my puzzle game)?

  I would like to develop an application for a group of people to use. I have decided to develop using python, but I am thinking of using python 2.X or python 3.X. If I use python 2.X, I need to upgrade it for the future... But it is more mature, and has many tools and libraries. If I develop using 3.X, I don't need to think of future integration, but currenttly it doesn't have many libraries, even a python to executable is not ready for all platforms. Also, one of the considerations is that it is a brand new application, so I don't have the history burden to maintain the old libraries. Any recommendation on this dilemma?   If your laptop Screen is Blank and there is no POST, BIOS or boot, you can follow the steps mentioned here and there are chances that it will work if there is no hardware failure inside. Step 1: Remove the power cord from the laptop Step 2: Remove the battery from the laptop Step 3: Hold power button (keep it pressed) for almost 60 seconds Step 4: Plug power back in laptop Step 5: Start computer and it should just start normally. Step 6: Now shut down Step 7: Insert the battery back in the laptop Step 8: Start laptop again and it should work Note 1: If your laptop does not work after inserting back the memory. Remove the memory and repeat above process. Do not insert the battery back as it is malfunctioning. Note 2: If your screen is faulty or have issues with your hardware (motherboard, screen or anything else) this method will not fix your computer. Those, who care about how I come up with this not SQL related blog post, here is the very funny true story. If you are a married man, you will know what I am going to describe next. May be you have faced the same situation or at least you feel and understand my situation. My wife’s computer suddenly stops working when she was searching for my daughter’s mathematics worksheets online. While the fatal accident happened with my wife’s computer (which was my loyal computer for over 4 years before she got it), I was working in my home office, fixing a high priority issue (live order’s database was corrupted) with one of the largest eCommerce websites.  While I was working on production server where I was fixing database corruption, my wife ran to my home office. Here is how the conversation went: Wife: This computer does not work. I: Restart it. Wife: It does not start. I: What did you do with it? Wife: Nothing, it just stopped working. I: Okey, I will look into it later, working on the very urgent issue. Wife: I was printing my daughter’s worksheet. I: Hm.. Okey. Wife: It was the mathematics worksheet, which you promised you will teach but you never get around to do it, so I am doing it myself. I: Thanks. I appreciate it. I am very busy with this issue as million dollar transaction are not happening as the database got corrupted and … Wife: So what … umm… You mean to say that you care about this customer more than your daughter. You know she got A+ in every other class but in mathematics she got only A. She missed that extra credit question. I: She is only 4, it is okay. Wife: She is 4.5 years old not 4. So you are not going to fix this computer which does not start at all. I think our daughter next time will even get lower grades as her dad is busy fixing something. I: Alright, I give up bring me that computer. Our daughter who was listening everything so far she finally decided to speak up. Daughter: Dad, it is a laptop not computer. I: Yes, sweety get that laptop here and your dad is going to fix the this small issue of million dollar issue later on. I decided to pay attention to my wife’s computer. She was right. No matter what I do, it will not boot up, it will not start, no BIOS, no POST screen. The computer starts for a second but nothing comes up on the screen. The light indicating hard drive comes up for a second and goes off. Nothing happens. I removed every single USB drive from the laptop but it still would not start. It was indeed no fun for me. Finally I remember my days when I was not married and used to study in University of Southern California, Los Angeles. I remembered that I used to have very old second (or maybe third or fourth) hand computer with me. In polite words, I had pre-owned computer and it used to face very similar issues again and again. I had small routine I used to follow to fix my old computer and I had decided to follow the same steps again with this computer. Once I fixed the computer, I looked at my wife and asked. I: Well, now this laptop is back online, can I get guaranteed that she will get A+ in mathematics in this week’s quiz? Wife: Sure, I promise. I: Fantastic. After saying that I started to look at my database corruption and my wife interrupted me again. Wife: Btw, I forgot to tell you. Our daughter had got A in mathematics last week but she had another quiz today and she already have received A+ there. I kept my promise. I looked at her and she started to walk outside room, before I say anything my phone rang. DBA from eCommerce company had called me, as he was wondering why there is no activity from my side in last 10 minutes. DBA: Hey bud, are you still connected. I see um… no activity in last 10 minutes. I: Oh, well, I was just saving the world. I am back now. After two hours I had fixed the database corruption and everything was normal. I was outsmarted by my wife but honestly I still respect and love her the same as she is the one who spends countless hours with our daughter so she does not miss me and I can continue writing blogs and keep on doing technology evangelism. • PXE booting on old computer

  So my computer is not working - the disk is totally cleared, I've deleted GRUB and PLOP which I used to install new system, because CD-Rom is broken and BIOS is old (whole computer is old, it's Sony Vaio PCG-GR250) so it won't allow me to do it via USB and I got no floppy drive :) the only way is to PXE boot PLOP and install Linux from USB after PLOP has been opened. (I'm not a specialist but that's how I see it) I'm using Mac OS X 10.9 and I followed number of tutorials how to set up TFTP and DHCP server and I got PLOP here, but when I boot up with PXE it says that it found DHCP but TFTP timed out. Any help or alternative way of rescuing old laptop? Thanks in advance!

What is the best way to build a database of quest texts in jMonkey? I don't have a lot of real experience with databases. Is there a database that integrates well with jMonkey? Here are the ideal properties I want in my database, in order of priority: Reasonably light learning curve Easy portability (in Java) to Windows, Linux, and Mac OSX Good interface with Java Good interface with jMonkey The ability to add properties to the quests: ID, level, gender, quest chain ID, etc. Or am I wrong in thinking I need to use some giant monster like SQL? I haven't been able to find much information on this, so are people using some non-database methods for storing things like quest text in jMonkey?

• 2nd instance of Firefox does not obey GTK2 customizations

  Hi On Ubuntu 10.10 I started a 2nd instance of Firefox using the command: $ firefox -ProfileManager -no-remote & Created a new profile and everything works smoothly except for the fact that this instance of FF does not obey by GTK2 customizations that I have placed in ~/.gtkrc-2.0 Moreover, only SOME of the customizations are not obeyed. For example, the vertical scrollbars are supposed to be on the left, but they are on the right. The scrollbar arrows are together (Mac-like) as specified, so is the scrollbar width. The first instance obeys all customizations with scrollbars on the left. Any ideas?

• How to opendns with dynamic ip

  OpenDNS is almost completely useless with a dynamic ip and most people have dynamic ip addresses. There isn't even a decent client for Linux to update your IP. There is a script you can install but it only seems to update on startup and all my child needs to do is unplug and replug the cable from the wall or router and a new ip is created totally killing the opendns service . I'm not even sure the Mac or windows ip update clients can protect from such a simple maneuver . How can I get my ip address to constantly update with opendns, is my question.

• MacBook Pro 5.5 32-bit or 64-bit 12.04 LTS

  I'm currently running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64-bit on a Macbook Pro 5.5. I'm dealing with a couple of issues with the backlight and other little pesky things which with my understanding could be caused by the silly Mac, or just a brand new LTS, or both. Is it known for macs running ubuntu to run better with the 64-bit or 32-bit? I know that the bit size deals with info transfer, but I'm just curious if the versions react differently with the macs cpu and hardware (for example if I switch to 32-bit would the backlight issue be resolved) and resulting in a better user experience. =) thanks in advance

• Sharing internet to Ubuntu 12.04 VMWare guest

  Got the 12.04 distro and installed this on my Mac VMWare Fusion (Version 4.1.2). Install went fine and Ubuntu seemed to update itself during the install. Rebooted and now I cannot get Ubuntu to access the internet via my Macs Ethernet connection (Connected to a router) Have tried settings the VMWare network adaptor to NAT or bridged and Host only without success. In Ubuntu I have the eth0 set to Automatic DHCP. VMWare tools is installed as well. I know next to nothing about what to do here and net searches on both Stackoverflow and Superuser sites are producing not results for me. Could someone please help? What to eventually have Ubuntu run in the background as a development web server running Zend Framework and CE Server edition but need thew internet access to run updates etc on Ubuntu. Any help would be really appreciated. TIA John

• Is your Xcode4 stable?

  I have upgraded to Xcode4, and I'm experiencing unbelievable situation. Xcode4 crashes per 5 minute. Incredibly slow. Almost impossible to use. Maybe the problem is my hardware configuration. I'm using MacBook Air 3rd with 2GB ram with SSD. It was just fine with Xcode3, but now, it consumes all of memory and crashes too often. Does your Xcode4 stable? If so, please let me know what's your hardware configuration. I want to know whether this problem is caused by hardware configuration or not to decide buy a new mac.

I've already set up a LAMP stack as well as FTP. Now I just need to know how to transfer my web files to the /var/www folder in Ubuntu. Previously I've worked on Mac OS and there's a central server for all the web files where I can FTP to. Anyone able to help me understand how do I FTP to the /var/www folder in Ubuntu? Thanks
