• Questions about shifting from mysql to PDO

  Hey guys I have recently decided to switch all my current plain mysql queries performed with php mysql_query to PDO style queries to improve performance, portability and security. I just have some quick questions for any experts in this database interaction tool Will it prevent injection if all statements are prepared? (I noticed on php.net it wrote 'however, if other portions of the query are being built up with unescaped input, SQL injection is still possible' I was not exactly sure what this meant). Does this just mean that if all variables are run through a prepare function it is safe, and if some are directly inserted then it is not? Currently I have a connection at the top of my page and queries performed during the rest of the page. I took a look at PDO in more detail and noticed that there is a try and catch procedure for every query involving a connection and the closing of that connection. Is there a straightforward way to connecting and then reusing that connection without having to put everything in a try or constantly repeat the procedure by connecting, querying and closing? Can anyone briefly explain in layman's terms what purpose a set_exception_handler serves? I appreciate any advice from any more experienced individuals.

  I have been looking into Node.js, express and Nowjs and love how easy it is to have real time interactions between clients. My background is mostly from CodeIgniter MVC using PHP and MYSql. I want to re make a current web project of mine from scratch to make everything better and more real time with this newer technology. After researching and doing test examples I want to use node.js , express and Nowjs for the real time interactions once someone connects to the socket.io to pull data back to clients. But use Code Igniter for the control of the site and user management , possible shopping cart/store , pretty much everything else. This is purely due to time constraints and that I am already familiar with doing it that way. I have been looking at MongoDB as an alternative to MySql, Basically the app is going to be multiple chat rooms all on one page. with the ability of notifications and private messaging. Lots of data transfer and images. before I started piecing it together I wanted to get people who have already done something similar. My model would use Code Igniter and MySQL to render the page and then connect them onto a node.js server and broadcast using express and nowjs would using a mongoDB be better than mySQL for tons of messages and data being stored or MYSQL? Also does it make since to not make the whole site on Node.js , kinda piece it together like that?

  I need to check on disabling JavaScript if the user disabled JavaScript from browser or firewall or any other place he will never show the form. • Android Java error handling XML file

  I'm using SAX and XML reader to read XML weather info from the web and it works fine if the page exists. But if for instance the user inputs an invalid city, zip etc the XML page that gets read from is empty and the app force closes with nullpointerexception. The area that generates the error is here right at open inputstream. • Processing JSON data with jQuery - strange results needing alert()

  I have this code below. I randomly ran across that it will work if I have that alert message exactly where it is. If I take it out or move it to any other spot the tabs will not appear. What exactly is that alert doing that allows the code to work and how can I make it work without the alert? • How can I measure my (SAMP) server's bandwidth usage?

  I'm running a Solaris server to serve PHP through Apache. What tools can I use to measure the bandwidth my server is currently using? I use Google analytics to measure traffic, but as far as I know, it ignores file size. I have a rough idea of the average size of the pages I serve, and can do a back-of-the-envelope calculation of my bandwidth usage by multiplying page views (from Google) by average page size, but I'm looking for a solution that is more rigorous and exact. Also, I'm not trying to throttle anything, or implement usage caps or anything like that. I'd just like to measure the bandwidth usage, so I know what it is. An example of what I'm after is the usage meter that Slicehost provides in their admin website for their users. They tell me (for another site I run) how much bandwidth I've used each month and also divide the usage for uploading and downloading. So, it seems like this data can be measured, and I'd like to be able to do it myself. To put it simply, what is the conventional method for measuring the bandwidth usage of my server?

• Apache mod_rewrite : How to REWRITE (or whatever) child directories to parent?

  Actually i am trying to make a PHP MVC like application. A basic one. The current milestone i am reaching already includes: Basic RESTful Routing Means, if i type: www.example.com/items/book/8888 .. it properly just stays there as it is and i can already slice out the URL by slashes / and loads the responsible Controllers .... etc from the top single index.php file. I mean, so it is OK for the backend PHP. But the only problem is, it still CAN NOT process the REWRITES properly. For example, the CSS & JS are BROKEN as if i VIEW PAGE SOURCE of the page www.example.com/items/book/8888, the asset files are being called as: www.example.com/items/book/8888/css/main.css www.example.com/items/book/8888/js/jquery.js .. which really are PROBLEMS because in the code is like: <link type="text/css" rel="stylesheet" media="all" href="css/main.css"> <script type="text/javascript" src="js/jquery.js"></script> So the question is: How can i use Apache REWRITE (or whatever approach) to make sure every ASSET FILES to be correctly being called from the DOCROOT. For example, if i am in the URL: www.example.com/items/book/8888 My ASSET FILES should still be called as: www.example.com/css/main.css www.example.com/js/jquery.js Or is there any other methods i need to follow?   In my project, I have created a code snippet which can be copied and then put in any website. It shows my content on other websites. My approach works fine. But when I look into some good standard ways to do such tasks, I find a different way. Take an example of google adsense code. <script type='text/javascript'> var a = 'somedata'; var b = 'someotherdata'; </script> <script type='text/javascript' src='http://www.google.com/adsenseurl.js'></script> I guess, since a and b are global; adsenseurl.js must be using it and may be finally they are showing it on iframe. So, now the question. What's the advantage in using google's approach and whats wrong in my approach ? p.s. I know I should try to avoid using iframes but I dont see any other way to accomplish this.

The value of this query parameter is actually the value of an HTML element which is in default3.aspx. I have to add it in runtime. What are the ways to achieve this?

• Radio button is not funtioning

  I'm having problem with my radio button in my gridview. I want to select any row one by one so that I can perform UPDATE, DELETE, and DISPLAY the row. When I select the button, the page will be refreshed and the button I selected before is not selected anymore. So I can't click any menu to update, delete or display the row. I noticed this is happening when I set the Autopostback = "True". How can I solve it? Any idea? • Using Visual Studio to make non aspx code-behind pages

  I want to build my own "code behind" like pages so that i can have HTML in a HTML file and code in cs file but be able to have Intellesense for the tokens in the HTML file. (i know that's what the .NET page class does, but i want to have something much lighter) EG: in the .html file: <%@ Directive classname="HTMLSnippet" %> <html> <body> <div>[%message%] </body> </html> and in a .cs file public class MyClass : HTMLSnippet { public class MyClass () { snippet.message = "message goes here" } } So my question is how do make the HTMLSnippet class so that it's members are automatically created, and specifically show up in Intellesense as i add tokens to the .html file? I know that .net currently does it by creating the designer.cs file and basically builds a class with all the elements from the page as it goes, and that would work fine but how can i get visual studio to generate that before compiling so that it shows up in Intellesense. Thanks! Clarification I'm not using this as a handler yet, i want to use this to have HTML snippets with tokens be usable in code as an object with properties. so almost like a custom control. I think what i have to do is create a VS add-in that waits for me to type tokens into an .html file then it automatically creates a .cs file with members for each token.

• What would be the best way to store the questions and responses for a survey where I need to keep th

  Background I am writing a survey that is going to a large audience. It contains 15 questions and there are five possible answers to each question along with potential comments. The user can cycle through all 15 questions answering them in any order and is allowed to leave the survey at any point and return to answer the remaining questions. Once an answer has been attempted on all 15 questions a submit button appears which allows them to submit the questions as final answers. Until that stage all answers are required to be retrievable whenever the user loads the survey page up. The requirement is that the user only sees one question on a page and 'Previous' and 'Next' buttons allow the user to scroll through the questions. Requirement I could request the question each time the user clicks a button and save the current response and so on but that would be a large number of hits to a database that is already heavily used. I don't have the time to procure a new server etc so I have to make do with what I have. Is there any way I can cache the questions on the user machine and/or responses? Obviously I need the response data to be secure and only known to the user so I feel a little bit stuck as for the best way of doing this. Any pointers? I am prepared to offer a bounty of 100 points on this question if it means I get some good quality discussion and feedback going.

• Keeping a web app project organized?

  Hi, I'm writing a web app, using jsp to create the page content. I need a pretty good amount of javascript to make the app work. Does anyone have any recommendations on how to structure my project, such that it doesn't become a mess? This is a broad question, but the basic problem is that I'm insert javascript code directly into my jsp content. Then I might have some external js files. Ids and such are strewn between multiple files. I'm not really sure what a best practice is for keeping this type of project organized. Do you always keep your javascript in separate files? There has to be a few hooks in the jsp pages though for them, right? I tried using GWT because I'm really a c/java developer, and I was hoping it would help keep my project more organized (definitely helps) - but GWT is a pain to use with jsp, it really wants you to do all UI generation client side after the page is done loading, doesn't work for what I need to do. Again, broad question, any tips would be great, Thanks

• Weird CSS behavior... removing a 1px border makes <DIV> move about 20px

I had the border on to verify things were as expected. But removing the border, pageBody drops down the page about 20px, while pageContent does not appear to move at all. Now this is not the real page, but a subset. If nothing's obvious I can attempt to generate a working minimal sample, but I thought there might be an easy quick answer first. I see the same exact problem in Chrome and IE8, suggesting it's me not the browser. Any tips where to look? I wondered maybe the 1px border was some tipping point making the contents of a div just too big, but changing #pageContent height to e.g 400 makes no difference, other than clipping the bottom off that div.

• SQL Table design question

  Please ignore this question if it sounds stupid to you. I have SQL table (SQL Server) for photo albums and it has 20+ columns & it will hold millions of albums. I need to designate some albums as Promoted and some as Featured every week. I also need a very efficient way to get these albums (page by page) when I show it to users. How should I design this? option 1: I can create another table just to store the ids of the promoted and featured albums like this and then join the main albums table to get the set of columns I need. table designated_albums: album_id promoted_featured 1 1 5 0 7 1 15 0 The query for promoted will return 1, 7 The query for featured will return 5, 15 Option 2: I can add 1 column store 1 if promoted and 0 if featured. Otherwise it is null I can then query to check for 1 in that column for promoted albums & 0 for featured. Option 3: I can add 2 bit columns: one for promoted (0/1) and one for featured(0/1) Which way would perform better? EDIT: The design should be efficient in SQL 2008 as well. Right now I have SQL 2005.

I want users to be able to run the applet and create unique images, click a button, and have the image they created be saved to the web server. I think I have the code down for writing the image to a URLconnection in the Java applet itself after having successfully written a file while running the applet on my system rather than the web page and saving a file to the local disk, and then altering a few things to write to a URLConnection instead of to the local disk (although we shall see how that works too). I am now trying to write a cgi script in perl that takes the image output from the URLConnection and writes the image to a file on my web server (note: I am a newbie to perl). I have found many examples of how to do something similar with simple text coming from an applet and then writing it to a text file, but I want to know how to apply the same concept to an image. Particularly, how do I read in the image? I've seen text input get read by using read(STDIN, $some_variable)--does the same thing work with an image? Likewise, how do I write the image file? What function do I use? Thanks for your help. I know that I am rather naive about all of this.

I can browse to http://mysite.com/getstates ok but when I call this function using ajax it is not passing the value of "test" which is "1" to $_POST["test"]. I am new to Drupal so I am positive that I miss something here. I thought I need a new set of eyes.

• Question about SharedPreferences

  I am looking an android Shared Preferences and I am wondering is there a way to just check if the preferences file exists. SharedPreferences mySharedPreferences ; mySharedPreferences=getSharedPreferences(“Name_of_your_preference”,mode); This above code leads me to believe that "Name_of_Your_preferene" is stored as a file or some sort of container that will contain your preferences. I am wondering is there away to check if this exists or not. When a user loads up an activity I want to save all the settings into this file with some default values(off for all settings). However I only want to do this if they are going to the page for the first time. Otherwise if I would do something like this every time the page loads up SharedPreferences.Editor editor= mySharedPreferences.edit(); /* now store your primitive type values. In this case it is true, 1f and Hello! World */ editor.putBolean(“myBoolean”,true); editor.putFloat(“myFloat”,1f); editor.putString(“myString”,” Hello! World”); I am guessing it would override all settings even ones they set.
