• OpenGL 2D Depth Perception

  I have a 2D RPG game written in Java using LWJGL. All works fine, but at the moment I'm having trouble deciding what the best way to do depth perception is. So , for example, if the player goes in front of the tree/enemy (lower than the objects y-coordinate) then show the player in front), if the player goes behind the tree/enemy (higher than the objects specific y-coordinate), then show the player behind the object. I have tried writing a block of code to deal with this, and it works quite well for the trees, but not for the enemies yet. Is there a simpler way of doing this in LWJGL that I'm missing?

• Keeping up with LibreOffice

  Installing LibreOffice manually on Ubuntu 12.04 works great following the advice in this answer: http://askubuntu.com/a/182602/103893 It basically is a matter of downloading the most recent release from the LibreOffice site and running sudo apt-get remove libreoffice-core and sudo dpkg -i *.deb. Doing the above I installed LibreOffice 3.6.3 and it works great. But what is the best way to uninstall this new version of LibreOffice (for when the next release is coming along)? Trying sudo apt-get remove libreoffice-core will not do anything, and sudo apt-get remove libreoffice3.6 does not seem to remove all packages installed with dpkg...?

• Java - learning / migrating fast

  This is not one of those questions like "How do I learn Java extremely fast, I know nothing about programming, but I heard Java is cool, yo". I have an interview for a Java Software Developer in a couple of weeks and the thing is that I think that I know C++ really good and I am somewhat good at C# (like, here I can probably answer on a lot of questions related to these languages), but I have almost zero experience with Java. I have a lot of projects written in both languages, I participiated in several open-source projects (mostly C++, though). Now, what should I do (in your opinion) to prepare myself for this Java interview. I guess migrating from C# to Java should be kind of fast, especially when you know a lot about programming in global, patterns, modern techniques and have a lot of practical experience behind you. But still two weeks is obviously not enough to get Java in-depth - so what should I focus on to have the best chances to pass the interview? Thank you.

  I want to write a shader/filer probably in adobe Pixel Bender that will do the best job possible in emulating the fill of an oldskul monochromatic arcade CRT screen. Much like this here: http://filthypants.blogspot.com/2012/07/customizing-cgwgs-crt-pixel-shader.html Here are some attributes I know will exist in this filter: It will take in a low res image 160 x 120 and return a medium res image 640 x 480. It will add scanlines It will blur the color channels to create that color bleeding effect It will distort the shape of the image from a perfect rectangle into a rounder shape. The question is, could you please provide any other attributes that are beneficial to emulating an arcade CRT feel and links and resources on coding these effects. Thanks

• Setting environment variables when executing Eclipse via Unity launcher icon

  My question is a followup for the following: How to pin Eclipse to the Unity launcher? I created Eclipse's icon to the Unity launcher based on the selected answer at the above link. However, when I launch Eclipse via this icon, the environment variables are not properly set. I need to call . /opt/intel/bin/compilervars.sh intel64 to use Intel compiler tools in Eclipse. However, launching via the icon can't do it. Of course, running manually Eclipse on the terminal is okay. I tried to place . /opt/intel/bin/compilervars.sh intel64 on several places such as /etc/profile and /etc/bash.bashrc. But, still not working. Where is the best and correct place to call such environment setup?

• Data Storage Options

  When I was working as a website designer/engineer I primarily used databases for storage of much of my dynamic data. It was very easy and convenient to use this method and seemed like a standard practice from my research on the matter. I'm now working on shifting away from websites and into desktop applications. What are the best practices for data storage for desktop applications? I ask because I have noticed that most programs I use on a personal level don't appear to use a database for data storage unless its embedded in the program. (I'm not thinking of an application like a word processor where it makes sense to have data stored in individual files as defined by the user. Rather I'm thinking of something more along the lines of a calendar application which would need to store dates and event info and such where accessing that information would be much easier if stored in a database... at least as far as my experience would indicate.)   I am using Kubuntu and I want to expand the current window to the free space on the screen or to say it more precisely: I want to make the current window as big as possible without overlapping new windows (windows already overlapped should be ignored). Is there a keyboard shortcut or an extension to the KDE Window management, that realizes such a shortcut or a window button? I would also appreciate a hint, how to write a script that could do this window thing on keyboard shortcut invocation. • Authorizing a module in a framework

  I've been studying PHP frameworks and I've been looking for how you would go about properly authorizing a module for classes, methods, and database actions. For example, lets say I want a framework that includes different modules from different programmers: Some core class may require special access, not all modules should have access to every core class unless authorized to. I do not want one module to be able to call another module's class/method if it is not supposed to be able to. I also don't want a security flaw in one module to be able to affect another module's database tables. I suppose an easy way to go about this is have a database table for authorization to consult, but I doubt that is the best way to go about this. I'd appreciate any advice or pointing me in the right direction for some reading.

• Collision Detection Game Design and Architecture

  I've reading some articles about collision detection. My question here is about ideas on the design for it. Baically I have a C++ game that has a main loop with entities with an update method. Based on keyboard input, these characters updates their positions. My question is not about how to detect collisions, it's about getting ideas in which is the best way to implement this. The game has a main character but also enemies that have to collide between them, so I'm not sure where to make all the iterations for checking collisions and if the right way is to check everything against everything. • Architecture Forum in the North 2010 - Hosted by Black Marble

  On Thursday the 8th of December I attended the "Architecture Forum in the North 2010" hosted by Black Marble. The third time this annual event has been held, it was pitched as featuring Black Marble and Microsoft UK architecture experts focusing on “Tools and Methods for Architects.... a unique opportunity to provide IT Managers, IT and software architects from Northern businesses the chance to learn about the latest technologies and best practices from Microsoft in the field of Architecture....insightful information about the latest techniques, demonstrating how with Microsoft’s architecture tools and technologies you can address your current business needs." Following a useful overview of the Architecture features of Visual Studio 2010, the rest of the day was given over to various features and ways to make use of Microsoft's Azure offerings.  While I did feel that a wider spread of technologies could have been covered (maybe a bit of Sharepoint or BizTalk even), the technological and architectural overviews of the Azure platform were well presented, informative and useful. The day was well organised and all those involved were friendly and approachable for questions and discussions.  If you are in "the North" and get a chance to attend next year I would highly recommend it.
