• DualBoot 32Win & 64Mac from Live USB +Persistance

  So I have a 32 bit Live USB with persistance that I use to write code, cause that's just how I roll. I can boot it onto my school computers(32 bit Win) no problem, but obviously not my Mac (2007 iMac, 64 Bit). Currently I use VMWare Fusion 6 Pro and a Plop Linux image to use the usb at home, but I can only get 900mb of ram for my VM. I was hoping to make a Live USB that can boot 32 bit and 64 bit for mac, with a shared persistance file, this way I can use my computer's full 2GB. Also, I'm not allowed edit any part of this Mac. Do Not reply telling me it's impossible. Please only solutions. Thank you, and have a unicorntastic day!

• Installing VMware Worstation/Player 8.0.4 on Ubuntu 12.10 fails to load with Unable to start services

  I have been attempting to install this application for a few weeks without any success. I have installed and uninstalled the application and pathes with no change. I have even tried to load a VM in Virtualbox and install the application there to a base install of Ubuntu 12.10 and it still did not install. I have downloaded the patch and modified it to reflect the version of VMware Worstation and Player I am installing. I still receive the same error I saw in the first attempt to install the software. Which leads me to think that I am missing something. The error is: Unable to start services. See log file /tmp/vmware-root/modconfig-7674.log for details. I have the output of the log file if that will help. According to the dialogue box Virtual Network Device and VMware Blocking Filesystem fail to either load or execute. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Domain resolution - local first then external

  I would like to know how I can configure my dns settings so that domain is resolved locally first, then if not resolved it goes to external DNS. I had this working before, I am using Ubuntu through a VM and need the local domain to resolve first but since I have upgraded I had to reconfigure network and now it works only external, local host file does not seem to even be used. Is there an easy way to check this out? I did slap it up in google but no specific answer seemed to match my case and I too tight on delivery deadline to test-and-try different approaches. You guys rock, thanks.

• GUI is not displayed anymore

  I am running 12.04 LTS on a VM. I encountered a problem with the screen being black and the familiar orange background showing for a fraction of a second when clicking or resizing the screen. I had to shutdown the machine and now I have no GUI. I only get a black command-line interface. As some other posts suggest, I attempted: sudo service lightdm restart This doesn't work for me because it gets stuck at this point: Skipping profile in /etc/apparmor.d/disable: user.bin.firefox Skipping profile in /etc/apparmor.d/disable: user.sbin.rsyslogd * Starting AppArmor profiles [ OK ] Any ideas?

• Ubuntu 12.04 Running Faster Than Normal

  I have just installed a new copy of Ubuntu 12.04 on my laptop . i have noticed that my system is running 4x to 5x faster than normal . i have just install Vmware Desktop & centos for testing something . i have noticed that i has installed in just like less than 1 minute !! My system is booting so fast that after starting my laptop i got GUI in like 10 to 13 sec & shutting down in like 2 to 3 sec & all programs ( Firefox , Chrome , etc ) running so fast that i can see .... The only change i made after installation is cat /proc/sys/vm/swappiness 1 How do I configure swappiness? The System is Dell N 5110 i7 with 8GB of RAM So my question is that what should i look for that why my system running very fast ?

• How to boot WUBI installed Ubuntu within Windows 8?

  I have Windows 8 Release Customer Preview on my laptop. I tried to install Ubuntu on it with Ubuntu Windows installer (I have always used this to install, although that was on Windows 7), it installs and asks to reboot, then immediately Windows 8 boots up. I do not have the option to choose what OS to boot. How can I boot to Ubuntu? VM is not exactly what I would like to use, but it is an option, however a last resort. Any help?

• alphanumeric and special character sorting

  Hi ppl, I wanted to know the different standards of sorting. To be more specific take the sample set: (Please note there's capitals, small letters, special characters, null values and numbers here) A a 3F Zx - 1Ad NULL How would the Oracle Database sort this by default? How would LINQ sort this by default? How would db2 sort this by default? (the following may get even more vague) How does the Windows platform sort this? (I mean say you have a couple of filenames, by default how would this get treated in a name sort) How does the *nix platform sort this? Is there some sort of standard for alphanumeric/special character sorting? The Windows operating system orders with numbers first, then alphabets. The Oracle database however treats alphabets first. I'm not sure of the *nix platform. It would be nice to have one place to know all these rules for the most common platforms (listed in questions above). Would the gurus throw some light on this topic? Cheers, K

UPDATE This actually turned out to be a bug in the Oracle 10.2.0.1 client. Although, I'm still interested in ideas on how I could have figured this out without finding the bug in Oracle's bug database.

  According to Orcale's Java7 assert guide: source mode 1.3 (default) — the compiler accepts programs that use assert as an identifier, but issues warnings. In this mode, programs are not permitted to use the assert statement. source mode 1.4 — the compiler generates an error message if the program uses assert as an identifier. In this mode, programs are permitted to use the assert statement. • What's the best way to read a UDT from a database with Java?

  I thought I knew everything about UDTs and JDBC until someone on SO pointed out some details of the Javadoc of java.sql.SQLInput and java.sql.SQLData JavaDoc to me. The essence of that hint was (from SQLInput): An input stream that contains a stream of values representing an instance of an SQL structured type or an SQL distinct type. This interface, used only for custom mapping, is used by the driver behind the scenes, and a programmer never directly invokes SQLInput methods. This is quite the opposite of what I am used to do (which is also used and stable in productive systems, when used with the Oracle JDBC driver): Implement SQLData and provide this implementation in a custom mapping to ResultSet.getObject(int index, Map mapping) The JDBC driver will then call-back on my custom type using the SQLData.readSQL(SQLInput stream, String typeName) method. I implement this method and read each field from the SQLInput stream. In the end, getObject() will return a correctly initialised instance of my SQLData implementation holding all data from the UDT. To me, this seems like the perfect way to implement such a custom mapping. Good reasons for going this way: I can use the standard API, instead of using vendor-specific classes such as oracle.sql.STRUCT, etc. I can generate source code from my UDTs, with appropriate getters/setters and other properties My questions: What do you think about my approach, implementing SQLData? Is it viable, even if the Javadoc states otherwise? What other ways of reading UDT's in Java do you know of? E.g. what does Spring do? what does Hibernate do? What does JPA do? What do you do? Addendum: UDT support and integration with stored procedures is one of the major features of jOOQ. jOOQ aims at hiding the more complex "JDBC facts" from client code, without hiding the underlying database architecture.   Hello, I have the following problem: I have a project in C# .Net where I use a third party COM component. So the problem is that the above component has a method, which takes a string and a number of key-value pairs as arguments. I already managed to call that method through JavaScript like that: var srcName srcName = top.cadView.addSource( 'Database', { driver : 'Oracle', host : '10.10.1.123', port : 1234, database : 'someSID', user : 'someuser', password : 'somepass' } ) if ( srcName != '' ) { ... } ... and it worked perfectly well. However I have no idea how to do the same using C#. I tried passing the pairs as Dictionary and Struct/Class but it throws me a "Specified cast is not valid." exception.   I have huge problem: I have lots of .dbf files(~50000) and I need to import them into Oracle database. Everything's fine. BUT: There is about 1000 files, that I can't open. They raise exception "not a table". So I google, and install Borland Database Engine. Now everything wokrs fine....but no. Now, when I'm reading files, on 1024 file exception raises: "System resource exceeded". But I have lots of free resources. When I remove BDE, everything's fine again, no "system resource exceeded" error, but I cant read all files. Help please. PS: Tried using ODBC but nothing changes.

• ODBC and NLS_LANG

  Let's say that I've created two different program executables, e.g. in C++. For some reason, the two programs internals representation of text are different from each other. Let's say the first program is using text representation A and the other text representation B. It could be a specific 8-bit ANSI codepage, Unicode/UTF-8 or Unicode/UTF-16 or whatever. Now each program want to communicate text (add/retrieve data) to/from the same database table on a (database) server. Each program communicates with the database through ODBC. So the programs do not know what database system they they are communicating with. In this specific case through the database is actually a Oracle RDMS database and the database server administrator has setup the database to use UTF-8. On the system on which the programs are running an appropriate ODBC driver is available, so that the programs can connect through ODBC. Each program will treat and convert from the ODBC data type SQL_C_CHAR to its internal text representation appropriately. I assume that the programs cannot do no other than to assume a specific encoding returned for SQL_C_CHAR text. If not the programs has to be told which encoding that is. For Oracle, I know that the NLS_LANG environment variable can be used on the client. I assume it affects the ODBC driver (related to SQL_C_CHAR) to convert from a specific encoding (as given by NLS_LANG) to the internal encoding of the database (in this example UTF-8) and vice-versa. If the machine running my programs are having a NLS_LANG this setting will affect the byte sequences returned for SQL_C_CHAR so my programs cannot suddenly assume a specific encoding for the text returned via SQL_C_CHAR. Is it possible to setup the ODBC connection (preferably programmatically at runtime), so that it takes care of text conversions appropriately for the two programs, i.e. from/to representation to/from UTF-8 and from/to representation B to/from UTF-8? Regards, /Michael PS. As the programs are connecting through ODBC I don't think it would be nice that they should now anything about NLS_LANG as this is a Orcacle specific environment variable.

• SSIS - How do I use a resultset as input in a SQL task and get data types right?

  I am trying to merge records from an Oracle database table to my local SQL table. I have a variable for the package that is an Object, called OWell. I have a data flow task that gets the Oracle data as a SQL statment (select well_id, well_name from OWell order by Well_ID), and then a conversion task to convert well_id from a DT_STR of length 15 to a DT_WSTR; and convert well_name from a DT_STR of length 15 to DT_WSTR of length 50. That is then stored in the recordset OWell. The reason for the conversions is the table that I want to add records to has an identity field: SSIS shows well_id as a DT_WSTR of length 15, well_name a DT_WSTR of length 50. I then have a SQL task that connects to the local database and attempts to add records that are not there yet. I've tried various things: using the OWell as a result set and referring to it in my SQL statement. Currently, I have the ResultSet set to None, and the following SQL statment: Insert into WELL (WELL_ID, WELL_NAME) Select OWELL_ID, OWELL_NAME from OWell where OWELL_ID not in (select WELL.WELL_ID from WELL) For Parameter Mapping, I have Paramater 0, called OWell_ID, from my variable User::OWell. Parameter 1, called OWell_Name is from the same variable. Both are set to VARCHAR, although I've also tried NVARCHAR. I do not have a Result set. I am getting the following error: Error: 0xC002F210 at Insert records to FLEDG, Execute SQL Task: Executing the query "Insert into WELL (WELL_ID, WELL_NAME) Select OWELL..." failed with the following error: "An error occurred while extracting the result into a variable of type (DBTYPE_STR)". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly. I don't think it's a data type issue, but rather that I somehow am not using the resultset properly. How, exactly, am I supposed to refer to that recordset in my SQL task, so that I can use the two recordset fields and add records that are missing?
