• Google search does not show sub-pages from my website

  My website appears in Google search, but only the first page. Of course I have sub-pages linked from the first page, but the sub-pages do not show in Google search. Not in Yahoo, not in Bing. What should I do? It has been three years that sub-pages do not show. (I tried searching site:mydomain.com and pressed 'repeat the search with the omitted results included' link) What would you suspect the reason? My website addresses were like xxx.php?yy=zzz etc, etc, so I changed it to /yy/zzz using mod_rewrite. I thought it might be (X)HTML standard violations, so now I changed it. I hope Google will soon have my entire website, but I am a little bit pessimistic. Do you have any thought?

Due to the complexity of the single page, particularly the JavaScripts used, I've think creating a dedicated project for the client side of web development and another for service side will organize and simplify the development. solution | +-- web / client side (single html page, js, css) | - contains asp.net project, and nancy library | to host the modules in application ptoject folder | +-- application / service (nancy modules, bootstrap for other layer) | . . . and other layers (three teir, domain driven, etc) . Is this a good way of organizing a complex single page application? Am I over-engineering the web app, incurring too much complexity?

• What's the correct MAAS DHCP configuration?

  I've set up a MAAS controller by following this documentation: http://maas.ubuntu.com/docs1.4/cluster-configuration.html However, when I got to the DHCP configurations I was a little puzzled. The controller I created is at 172.16.142.61. It looks like that's the address for the "IP" text field. Going down the rest of the list I'm unsure of though. Should I just put in the subnet/broadcast/router (is that the gateway?) that the MAAS server resides in or am I suppost to just list the static address of the MAAS server and then define my own "virtual" subnet in the fields below?

• Reading 'Index Status' graph in Google Webmaster tools

  I recently found a bunch of old files that had been ftp'ed to a live production server by mistake on a static (html / css / js) site. I manually deleted these files, but today when checking in Google Webmaster tools i found this graph below. The 'update' marker is from 3/9/14, what i can work out is what Google is trying to tell me, are they saying that : There was a ranking update like Penguin or Panda and they penalized my site and un-indexed a load of pages which they thought were junk.. OR Is this showing that I updated the site by deleting the files on the server on 3/9/14 OR Is this something else ?

My company is moving more and more to SharePoint and I feel I need to learn to build application within the SharePoint system. I have some brief introduction to C# but that's about it. I've used some SharePoint Designer and the web interface but not that heavily (most of my "development" so far for SharePoint has been html/css/javascript page manipulation in SPDesigner). • Can I test my affiliate ID on a dummy webpage without it being suspended?

  I've recently applied for an Amazon affiliate program (which was accepted) as I'm planning on advertising books I read, on my website. Before going live with my website, I would like to: 1 -test the whole affiliate program to make sure it's working properly. 2 -buy the books I will review and promote on my website under my own affiliate program in order to get some cash back and therefore save money. To do so, I thought about setting up a simple HTML page (on the actual domain I applied for) which will just list the products I will buy before going live. That way I test, get some cash back, and don't expose my website (Brand, content...) before going live. Can I do this without having my account suspended by Amazon (i.e. won't Amazon think I only applied to the program to get some cash back, will Amazon be happy with receiving affiliate traffic from an almost empty website...) ?

  I love Rich Hickey, Clojure and Haskell and I get it when he talks about functions and the unreliability of side-effecting code. However I work in an environment where nearly all the functions I write have to read from the database, write to the database, make HTTP requests, decrement a user's balance, modify a frontend HTML component based on a click action, return different results based on the URI or the POST body. We also use PHP for the frontend, which is littered with functions like parse_str(), which modifies an object in place. All of these are side-effecting to one degree or another. Given these constraints and the side-effecting nature of the logic I'm coding, what can I do to make my code more reliable and function-able?

• Is there an easier way to implement 301 redirects when converting a site to WordPress

  I have just converted a website to WordPress. The old site has hundreds of hard-coded html files, and the new site does not match the old site's directory structure or file naming system (bad SEO in the original site), so I can't place any "blanket" 301 redirects. Its been at least 2 months, and the old links are still appearing in Google searches, despite a google-friendly sitemap.xml. Do I need to hardcode a 301 for every individual page in my htaccess file, or am I just misunderstanding 301s and apache? Is there some other way I can update Google about the fact that my entire site structure has changed?

  I have a site created by Ruby on Rails. I had verified against Google Webmaster Tool some months ago, which was successful. One day webmaster starts giving me Re-verification fails. I tried again to verify my site using Meta tags and HTML files. But I kept having "Verification failed. The connection to your server timed out." Since then, Google stop crawling my site's content - though, somehow google still crawl my PDF contents on my site.

  I would like to become a professional in php, I have learned nearly all about the language syntax and concepts and I have a good knowledge in C and C++, which made it easier to become familiar with PHP. (Of course, I learned MySql too.) But I don't feel like being able to build even a little good website of my own! It looks like PHP is all about knowing lots of functions and using them, while in fact I don't think it's like that, is it? How can I become a professional in PHP and Website Building? I would do anything and spend whatever amount of time required for that. EDIT I've also a very good knowledge in HTML and a normal knowledge in CSS and JavaScript.   I am a "one man team" ASP.NET C#, SQL, HTML, JQuery programmer that wants to split workload with two other guys. Since I never actually thought of possible issue in a team of programmer, there are actually quite a few that came to my mind. delegating tasks (who works on what which is also very much related to security). I found Team Foundation Service could be helpful with this problem and started reading about it. Are there any alternatives? security (do now want for original code to be reused outside the project) How to prevent programmers from having access to all parts of code, and how to prevent them from using that code outside of project? Is trust or contract the only way?

  I am trying to start my webhttrack on ubuntu 12.04 precise pangolin but all i get is the opening screen. When i press any button on the page it gives me the following errors: Oops! • Is obtrusive JavaScript ever ok?

  I was thinking that if all the users of a website are required to have JavaScript enabled, Is it ok to use obtrusive JavaScript? I'm all for progressive enhancement, but whats the point when an advanced web applications bounces users at the door if they have an old browser or JavaScript disabled? We have a very slim target audience, and we can tell our target audience what browser and plugins/functionality they are required to have. So you my question is, is mixing JS and HTML alright in that case. Like using onclick attributes.

• Multiple Monitors using nvidia-prime or bumblebee on Ubuntu 13.10

  I've been unable to get multiple monitors to work with Ubuntu 13.10 using nvidia-prime or bumblebee. Could someone point me in the right direction? With nvidia-prime, I've tried the xorg.conf here http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/319.12/README/randr14.html, but I boot into "low graphics" mode and have to revert to get a desktop back. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. Edit: I've given up on nvidia-prime; I missed the fact that it never turns off the discrete card... So, I'm back to trying to get VIRTUAL displays working with Bumblebee.

• Common mistakes made by new programmers without CS backgrounds [on hold]

  I've noticed that there seems to be a class of mistakes that new programmers without CS backgrounds tend to make, that programmers with CS backgrounds tend not to. I'm not talking about not understanding source control, or how to design large programs, or a whole host of other things that both freshly minted CS graduates and non-CS graduates tend to not understand, I'm talking about basic mistakes that having a CS background will prevent a programmer from making. One obvious and well trod example is that folks who don't have a basic understanding of formal languages will often try to parse arbitrary HTML or XML using regular expressions, and possibly summon Cthulu in the process. Another fairly common one that I've seen is using common data structures in suboptimal ways like using a vector and a search function as if it were a hash map. What sorts of other things along these lines would you look out for when on-boarding a batch of newly minted, non-CS programmers.

• Aren't there compilers better at telling the programmer what's wrong in a code ?

  I have worked a little while with the Microsoft compiler from Visual C++ but I worked a long time with G++, and I remember often having bad times understanding what was wrong in my code with the former. Beside binary code generation and optimisation, I think this is a very important feature of a C++ compiler: giving the programmer a clue that makes him understand as fast as possible what is wrong with his/her code. I can understand some programmers understand programming as some sort of "competition" to make less errors, but to me that's a counter productive opinion. I once tried Clang compiler for C from the LLVM thingie, I didn't use it for a long time, but I was impressed on how explicit and easy to understand the error messages were. Regular Expression HTML and CSS HTTP Web programming language (PHP, Ruby, etc.) SQL (command based, not GUI, since most server environment uses terminal only) Javascript and library (jQuery) Versioning (SVN, Git) Unit and functional test Tools Build tools (Ant, NAnt, Maven) Debugging tools (Firebug, Fiddler) Mastering the above makes you a good web developer. Any comments?

• Best free wireframe software for websites

  Working on a non-profit project and wondering if there's a standout wireframing tool for website design. I've taken photos of collaborative whiteboard drawings and now I want to put the results into something slightly more professional looking for review. For obvious reasons I'm not interested in anything that looks too much like the finished product or takes longer than it would for me to write the HTML. I checked out jumpchart, but that only seems to let you do content panes, not draw whole page layouts. Free or close to free is desirable - for instance jumpchart licensing seems very reasonable.

  The trolls are driving me crazy; I'd like to experiment with a secret ban. http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2011/06/suspension-ban-or-hellban.html A hellbanned user is invisible to all other users, but crucially, not himself. From their perspective, they are participating normally in the community but nobody ever responds to them. They can no longer disrupt the community because they are effectively a ghost. It's a clever way of enforcing the "don't feed the troll" rule in the community. When nothing they post ever gets a response, a hellbanned user is likely to get bored or frustrated and leave. It looks like there's no way to do this out-of-the-box with phpbb. Is there a way to hack it in?

• What do you need to know to get a job as a web developer

  What do you need to know to at the very least get your foot in the door? We're assuming for someone who doesn't have a college degree (yet) but will eventually get one. My guess is html, css, javascript, and php, and photoshop and dreamweaver, and sql. And being familiar with using a web host to have sites live, like knowing how to use cpanel. It's probably a very inaccurate and narrow guess but that's what i think right now. I don't know exactly.
