• Obtain container type from (its) iterator type in C++ (STL)

  It is easy given a container to get the associated iterators, example: std::vector<double>::iterator i; //An iterator to a std::vector<double> I was wondering if it is possible, given an iterator type, to deduce the type of the "corresponding container" (here I am assuming that for each container there is one and only one (non-const) iterator). More precisely, I would like a template metafunction that works with all STL containers (without having to specialize it manually for each single container) such that, for example: ContainerOf< std::vector<double>::iterator >::type evaluates to std::vector<double> Is it possible?   I have a simple GAE app that includes a login/logout link. This app is running on the dev server at the moment. The base page handler gets the current user, and creates a login/logout url appropriately. It then puts this information into a _template_data dictionary, for convenience of subclasses. class BasePage(webapp.RequestHandler): _user = users.get_current_user() _login_logout_link = None if _user: _login_logout_link = users.create_logout_url('/') else: _login_logout_link = users.create_login_url('/') _template_data = {} _template_data['login_logout_link'] = _login_logout_link _template_data['user'] = _user def render(self, templateName, templateData): path = os.path.join(os.path.dirname(__file__), 'Static/Templates/%s.html' % templateName) self.response.out.write(template.render(path, templateData)) Here is one such subclass: class MainPage(BasePage): def get(self): self.render('start', self._template_data) The login/logout link is displayed fine, and going to the correct devserver login/logout page. However, it seems to have no effect - the server still seems to think the user is logged out. What am I doing wrong here?

  I have multiple templates which differs with each other only by few containers. The most complex one contains superset of all containers used in all other one thus to avoid creating multiple templates I created the most complex one in following format some layout stuff (div and all) defining nested insert for each container and content. Now in client template based on what is needed I turn off container which is not needed as else if container is needed, just define content as doSomething Please let me know if you guys see any issues with this approach, any potential problem or alternate approach for similar scenario. thanks a lot.   I have an issue where adding this to any asp.net request causes and unhandled error (regardless of CustomErrors setting): ?aspxerrorpath=<script The weird thing is that I have two applications that are totally immune to the problem, but I can't spot the difference. I'm running on IIS 7 and using the 4.0 Framework. But this also happens on my 3.5 IIS 6 apps. Again, I have two sites that are fine (IIS 7, 4.0) but can't determine why. I have tried turning off request validation to no avail. Has anyone encountered something similar? FIXED: This looks like it was an Umbraco issue.   The definition for make_pair in the MSVC++ "utility" header is: template<class _Ty1, class _Ty2> inline pair<_Ty1, _Ty2> make_pair(_Ty1 _Val1, _Ty2 _Val2) { // return pair composed from arguments return (pair<_Ty1, _Ty2>(_Val1, _Val2)); } I use make_pair all the time though without putting the argument types in angle brackets: map<string,int> theMap ; theMap.insert( make_pair( "string", 5 ) ) ; Shouldn't I have to tell make_pair that the first argument is std::string and not char* ? How does it know?

I'm looking for a framework ... a REAL framework that gives me the same features out of the box that Rails does. As such it should include at minimum: MVC for presentation ORM Ability to provide simple configuration for whatever environment (dev, QA, Production, etc...) Migration like functionality Ability to generate code in all layers (similar to scaffolding like behavior, etc...) • Mathematica quickie: About making cells Input cells by default.

  I'm going through some lecture notes, Fundamentals of Mathematica Programming (see the .nb file there). I'd like to be able to do the exercises right there in the notebook; but for some reason I can't figure out how to make the default cell an Input cell. In other words, when I'm clicking in that notebook to create a new cell--in the exercises--the cell is by default a text cell. I'd like for it to be an Input cell so that I don't have to manually change it each time. Ideas?

• javascript code to prevent screensaver from starting

  Hi all, I am completely new to javascript programming and I have a question that I didn't manage to find an answer for anywhere. I have recently put together a simple slideshow to view the photos remotely that I host on my home computer. This by itself works fine. The problem I run into is that when I'm viewing photos I don't interact with the hardware, which after some time causes the monitor to switch off. This is particularly annoying when watching photos on my mobile phone. My question is: is there a way to prevent this from happening? I am thinking in the direction of faking a mouse or other event every time I refresh the photo, but I have no clue how to do that and if it is possible. Any help is greatly appreciated!

When I think python challenge, I do not mean only a set of problems to be solved with C++ (for that I could probably use the same problems of python challenge), but rather problems that will probably be best solved using C++ STL, special features of the language, etc. For example, there is one python challenge that is specifically designed to teach you how to use pickle, a serializing library for python. Until now, I only know programming contests problems, but they could also be solved with C, java or other languages.

• Running Java Server Application 24/7 (NOT on local machine) ...?

  I am currently experimenting with Java Socket Programming and succeeded in creating a simple application that allows me to send data back and forth between a client and a server. I don't want to power my laptop (on which the server application runs) 24/7. Therefore, of course, no computer (that runs my client application) will be able to communicate with my selfmade server application as long as my laptop is turned off. Now I'd like to know: (1) Is it possible to run the server application on a remote (physical) server, so that I don't need my laptop for that purpose? (2) If yes, do you have any suggestions where I could rent such a remote server? As I said, I'm just curious about how all that stuff works. I don't really something expensive.

• Why is iPhone 5 briefly Letterboxing and displaying Default.png in Cocos2d?

  I have [email protected] which loads fine. However, (on the actual device) after it shows the iPhone 5 then displays Default.png, in letter box mode. It then loads the 1136 × 640 px Title Screen - which is fine and what it's supposed to do. I'm using the default Cocos2d HelloWorld template. I haven't changed anything in the plist or otherwise. Any ideas? Why does it load the Default.png and how do you fix this? Thanks. In the IntroLayer we have -(void) onEnter if( UI_USER_INTERFACE_IDIOM() == UIUserInterfaceIdiomPhone ) { background = [CCSprite spriteWithFile:@"Default.png"]; background.rotation = 90; } Which is why Default.png is showing up. How do you keep showing [email protected] if you are using the iPhone 5?

• How to version SQL Server schema using VS 2005?

  I am new to C# programming and am coming to it most recently from working with Ruby on Rails. In RoR, I am used to being able to write schema migrations for the database. I would like to be able to do something similar for my C#/SQLServer projects. Does such a tool exist for the VS 2005 toolset? Would it be wise to use RoR migrations with SQL Server directly outside of VS 2005? In other words, I would handle all schema versioning using ActiveRecord:Migration from Rails but nothing else. If I do handle migrations outside of C# and VS 2005 with another tool, is RoR ActiveRecord:Migration the best thing to use or is there something which is a better fit?

• why number 9 in kill -9 command in unix?

  I understand it's off topic, I couldn't find anywhere online and I was thinking maybe programming gurus in the community might know this. I usually use kill -9 pid to kill the job. I always wondered the origin of 9. I looked it up online, and it says "9 Means KILL signal that is not catchable or ignorable. In other words it would signal process (some running application) to quit immediately" (source: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_does_kill_-9_do_in_unix_in_its_entirety) But, why 9? and what about the other numbers? is there any historical significance or because of the architecture of Unix?   Recently noticed detail description of FILE_FLAG_NO_BUFFERING flag in MSDN, and read several Google search results about unbuffered I/O in Windows. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa363858(v=vs.85).aspx I wondering now, is it really important to consider unbuffered option in file I/O programming? Because many programs use plain old C stream I/O or C++ iostream, I didn't gave any attention to FILE_FLAG_NO_BUFFERING flag before. Let's say we are developing photo explorer program like Picasa. If we implement unbuffered I/O, could thumbnail display speed show noticeable difference in ordinary users?

• best way to make this app/website combo?

  I have an idea for an app that lets different bars upload drink specials via a webpage to that app. They would log in the website, and the website would prompt them with a box to input the drink specials. When they are done, the app pulls the information and creates a card for that bar. The app would launch into a week view where you select the day you want to see specials for. After the day is selected, it brings you to a scroll view with different bars' cards laid out vertically, each taking up the width of the screen, allowing the user to scroll through the deals for that day of the week. How should I go about doing this if I have very little programming experience? Is there any convention in doing an app like this? Can anyone suggest any reading material that would help? Thank you!

I have added *.cl under Tool/Text editor/File extensions and copied usertype.dat into the common7/ide folder, but VS underlines keywords like float4 or cross. Is it necessary to add some key in registry or can somebody propose a tutorial? Thanks in advance.   The standard array-size macro that is often taught is #define ARRAYSIZE(arr) (sizeof(arr) / sizeof(arr[0])) or some equivalent formation. However, this kind of thing silently succeeds when a pointer is passed in, and gives results that can seem plausible at runtime until things mysteriously fall apart. It's all-too-easy to make this mistake: a function that has a local array variable is refactored, moving a bit of array manipulation into a new function called with the array as a parameter. So, the question is: is there a "sanitary" macro to detect misuse of the ARRAYSIZE macro in C, preferably at compile-time? In C++ we'd just use a template specialized for array arguments only; in C, it seems we'll need some way to distinguish arrays and pointers. (If I wanted to reject arrays, for instance, I'd just do e.g. (arr=arr, ...) because array assignment is illegal).

• Usage examples of binary search

  I just realized that in my 4+ years of Java programming (mostly desktop apps) I never used the binary search methods in the Arrays class for anything practical. Not even once. Some reasons I can think of: 100% of the time you can get away with linear search, maps or something else that isn't binary search. The incoming data is almost never sorted, and making it sorted requires an extra sorting step. So I wonder if it's just me, or do a lot of people never use binary search? And what are some good, practical usage examples of binary search?

  I'm still a bit slow with Python, so I haven't got this figured out beyond what's obviously in the docs, etc. I've worked with Django a bit, where they've added some datetime formatting options via template tags, but in regular python code how can I get the 12-hour hour without a leading zero? Is there a straightforward way to do this? I'm looking at the 2.5 and 2.6 docs for "strftime()" and there doesn't seem to be a formatting option there for this case. Should I be using something else? Feel free to include any other time-formatting tips that aren't obvious from the docs. =)

• MEF Why is ComposePart an extension method?

  CompositionContainer.ComposePart is an extension method. why is that? Looking into the System.Componentmodel.Composition assembly, it looks like it's because it is ONLY meant to work with the attributed programming model while the .Compose() method is able to take in exports as long as it is a composablepart. ComposePart is even hosted in the 'AttributedModelServices' class which makes me think I'm correct. Am I correct on this? If not, why is it an extension method and not a method in the container class?
