• Sorting results by a char(1) column

- by Brandon
I have a stored procedure which basically does something like select top 1 expiryDate, flag, (bunch of other columns) from someTable (bunch of joins) order by expiryDate desc So this will grab the record that expires last. This works for most cases, except some records have a flag that are just a char(1). Most of the time it's just Y or N. So it'll return something like 2010-12-31 N 2010-10-05 Y 2010-08-05 N 2010-03-01 F 2010-01-31 N This works, most of the time, but is there any way to order it by the Flag column as well? So I'd want to group the results by Y, then N, and F and any other flags can go last in any order. I thought this would just be an order by, but since the flags are not weighted by the alphabetic value, I'm a little stumped. (Note: These are not my tables, I don't know if using the characters like this was a good idea or not, but it's not something I can change).

• Problem with Nulls and an UPDATE statement

- by Dave
UPDATE TableA SET Value = a.Value * b.AnotherValue FROM TableA AS a INNER JOIN TableB AS b WHERE (Condition is true); Here is the problem. The Value field for TableA does not allow nulls. If the calculation of a.Value * b.AnotherValue yields a null, an error is thrown. Now the question. Is there any way to tell the UPDATE to ignore the SET phase when the result of the calculation is a null and delete the record rather than updating it. This UPDATE is intended to update hundreds of records at a time but will fail if a single null is encountered. Also, please note that using the ISNULL() function and setting the Value to zero is not acceptable. I would like the record to be dropped if a null is encountered. Many thanks in advance for any help rendered.

• adding count( ) column on each row

- by Arsenal
I'm not sure if this is even a good question or not. I have a complex query with lot's of unions that searches multiple tables for a certain keyword (user input). All tables in which there is searched are related to the table book. There is paging on the resultset using LIMIT, so there's always a maximum of 10 results that get withdrawn. I want an extra column in the resultset displaying the total amount of results found however. I do not want to do this using a seperate query. Is it possible to add a count() column to the resultset that counts every result found? the output would look like this: ID Title Author Count(...) 1 book_1 auth_1 23 2 book_2 auth_2 23 4 book_4 auth_.. 23 ... Thanks!

• How to distribute ranking using MySQL Query and PHP

- by nkp
I have to distribute ranking to the 5000 students in an exam. Ranking is based on the score and the time taken (in seconds) to obtain that score. For example is 5 students have same score, then taken will be the criteria to calculate their ranks otherwise score should be the criteria to calculate their ranks. Following is my table tbRank ID StudID Score Time Date Rank 1 11 8 60 09-11-2013 2 22 6 45 09-11-2013 3 33 4 76 09-11-2013 4 44 6 67 09-11-2013 5 55 8 35 09-11-2013 6 66 8 35 08-11-2013 7 77 8 39 08-11-2013 Now rank column in above table should be updated as: ID StudID Score Time Date Rank 1 11 8 60 09-11-2013 2 2 22 6 45 09-11-2013 3 3 33 4 76 09-11-2013 5 4 44 6 67 09-11-2013 4 5 55 8 35 09-11-2013 1 6 66 8 35 08-11-2013 1 7 77 8 39 08-11-2013 2 I want to make a MySQL Query to do this business. Similarly there can be more than 10000 records in the table. So I need an optimized query for this functionality. Note: I am using PHP and MYSQL. Update: Everyday almost 5000 new entries will be created in the table and after all insertions are made, rank column will be updated once in a day. Now please suggest me the best way to do this. If I update rank column in the table, then only once I will have to do it, otherwise everytime while fetching the rank of the student, I will have to make calculations.

• Code Keeps Timing Out

- by DForck42
So, we've got this set of code that, for some reason, keeps timing out. It's not the stored procedure that it's running, because that runs fine. Also, if we remove the parameter from the c# code, the code runs. The parameter keeps breaking (causing it to time out) and we can't figure out why. c#: public static PTWViewList GetList(int studynumber) { PTWViewList tempList = new PTWViewList(); using (SqlConnection myConnection = new SqlConnection(AppConfiguration.cnARDB)) { string spName = "ardb.PTWViewSelect"; SqlCommand myCommand = new SqlCommand(spName, myConnection); myCommand.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure; myCommand.Parameters.AddWithValue("@study", studynumber); myConnection.Open(); using (NullableDataReader myReader = new NullableDataReader(myCommand.ExecuteReader())) /*this is where the code times out*/ { tempList = new PTWViewList(); while (myReader.Read()) { tempList.Add(FillDataRecord(myReader)); } myReader.Close(); } } tempList.ListCount = tempList.Count; return tempList; } stored procedure: CREATE PROCEDURE [ardb].[PTWViewSelect] @studynumber int = NULL, @quoteid uniqueidentifier = NULL, @lineitemid uniqueidentifier = NULL AS BEGIN SET NOCOUNT ON; SELECT [Study] ,[LineItemID] ,[QuoteID] ,[Total] ,[COOP] ,[VendorCost] ,[CustCost] ,[LineItemNumber] ,[StudyTypeCode] ,[GroupLeader] ,[PTWDate] ,[PONumber] ,[POStatus] ,[StudyDirector] ,[SL_DESC_L] ,[SL_Code] ,ProjectDescription ,CreatedBy ,chARProcess ,CODate FROM [ARDB].[dbo].[PTWView] WHERE (@studynumber is null or StudyNumber=@studynumber) AND (@quoteid is null or QuoteID=@quoteid) AND (@lineitemid is null or LineItemID = @lineitemid) END

• Any idea why this query always returns duplicate items?

- by Kardo
I want to get all Images not used by current ItemID. The this subquery but it also always returns duplicate Images: EDITED select Images.ImageID, Images.ItemStatus, Images.UserName, Images.Url, Image_Item.ItemID, Image_Item.ItemID from Images left join (select ImageID, ItemID, MAX(DateCreated) x from Image_Item where ItemID != '5a0077fe-cf86-434d-9f3b-7ff3030a1b6e' group by ImageID, ItemID having count(*) = 1) image_item on Images.imageid = image_item.imageid where ItemID is not null I guess the problem is with the subquery which I can't avoid duplicate rows: select ImageID, ItemID, MAX(DateCreated) x from Image_Item where ItemID != '5a0077fe-cf86-434d-9f3b-7ff3030a1b6e' group by ImageID, ItemID having count(*) = 1 Result: F2EECBDC-963D-42A7-90B1-4F82F89A64C7 0578AC61-3C32-4A1D-812C-60A09A661E71 F2EECBDC-963D-42A7-90B1-4F82F89A64C7 9A4EC913-5AD6-4F9E-AF6D-CF4455D81C10 42BC8B1A-7430-4915-9CDA-C907CBC76D6A CB298EB9-A105-4797-985E-A370013B684F 16371C34-B861-477C-9A7C-DEB27C8F333D 44E6349B-7EBF-4C7E-B3B0-1C6E2F19992C Table: Images ImageID uniqueidentifier UserName nvarchar(100) DateCreated smalldatetime Url nvarchar(250) ItemStatus char(1) Table: Image_Item ImageID uniqueidentifier ItemID uniqueidentifier UserName nvarchar(100) ItemStatus char(1) DateCreated smalldatetime Any kind help is highly appreciated.

• Persisting Serializable Objects in Hibernate

- by VeeArr
I am attempting to persist objects that contain some large Serializable types. I want Hibernate to automatically generate my DDL (using Hibernate annotations). For the most part, this works, but the default database column type used by Hibernate when persisting these types is tinyblob. Unfortunately, this causes crashes when attempting to persist my class, because these types will not fit within the length of tinyblob. However, if I manually set the type (using @Column(columnDefinition="longblob")), it works fine. Is there any way to make the default binary type longblob instead of tinyblob, so that I don't need to manually specify the @Column annotation on each field?

• Date range advanced count calculation in TSQL

- by cihata87
I am working on call center project and I have to calculate the call arrivals at the same time between specific time ranges. I have to write a procedure which has parameters StartTime, EndTime and Interval For Example: Start Time: 11:00 End Time: 12:00 Interval: 20 minutes so program should divide the 1-hour time range into 3 parts and each part should count the arrivals which started and finished in this range OR arrivals which started and haven't finished yet Should be like this: 11:00 - 11:20 15 calls at the same time(TimePeaks) 11:20 - 11:40 21 calls ... 11:40 - 12:00 8 calls ... Any suggestions how to calculate them?

• How do I provide a string with a list of values to an "IN" statement

- by Degan
I am creating a string that is a list of comma-delimitted values by looping through the selections in a CheckBoxList. I am able to display this value, so I know that it is creating what I expect. I am attempting to pass this list to an IN statment in a SELECT query: SelectCommand="SELECT ThisDate, DATEPART(dw, ThisDate) AS Expr1 FROM fbCalendar WHERE (ThisDate >= @ThisDate) AND (ThisDate <= @ThisDate2) AND (DATEPART(dw, ThisDate) IN (@TheseDays))" <asp:ControlParameter ControlID="Label1" Name="TheseDays" PropertyName="Text" Type="String" /> This works fine as long as there is only a single item selected, but selecting a second item fails with the message: Conversion failed when converting the nvarchar value '4,5' to data type int. However, I do not understand when this would be converted to an INT. I have tried many different formatting attempts (such as encapsulating the string in parenthesis (e.g. "(4,5)" ) for the SELECT query, but I have yet to find the right one to make this work. It seems like formatting is the problem, but perhaps I am missing something else.

• Find Consecutive Rows & Calculate Duration

- by MannyKo
I have a set a of data that tells me if a couple of systems are available or not every 5 or 15 minutes increments. For now, the time increment shouldn't matter. The data looks like this: Status Time System_ID T 10:00 S01 T 10:15 S01 F 10:30 S01 F 10:45 S01 F 11:00 S01 T 11:15 S01 T 11:30 S01 F 11:45 S01 F 12:00 S01 F 12:15 S01 T 12:30 S01 F 10:00 S02 F 10:15 S02 F 10:30 S02 F 10:45 S02 F 11:00 S02 T 11:15 S02 T 11:30 S02 I want to create a view that tells when a system is NOT available (i.e. when it is F), from what time, to what time, and duration which is to - from. Desired results: System_ID From To Duration S01 10:30 11:00 00:30 S01 11:45 12:15 00:30 S02 10:00 11:00 01:00 Here is the script data: DROP SCHEMA IF EXISTS Sys_data CASCADE; CREATE SCHEMA Sys_data; CREATE TABLE test_data ( status BOOLEAN, dTime TIME, sys_ID VARCHAR(10), PRIMARY KEY (dTime, sys_ID) ); INSERT INTO test_data (status, dTime, sys_ID) VALUES (TRUE, '10:00:00', 'S01'); INSERT INTO test_data (status, dTime, sys_ID) VALUES (TRUE, '10:15:00', 'S01'); INSERT INTO test_data (status, dTime, sys_ID) VALUES (FALSE, '10:30:00', 'S01'); INSERT INTO test_data (status, dTime, sys_ID) VALUES (FALSE, '10:45:00', 'S01'); INSERT INTO test_data (status, dTime, sys_ID) VALUES (FALSE, '11:00:00', 'S01'); INSERT INTO test_data (status, dTime, sys_ID) VALUES (TRUE, '11:15:00', 'S01'); INSERT INTO test_data (status, dTime, sys_ID) VALUES (TRUE, '11:30:00', 'S01'); INSERT INTO test_data (status, dTime, sys_ID) VALUES (FALSE, '11:45:00', 'S01'); INSERT INTO test_data (status, dTime, sys_ID) VALUES (FALSE, '12:00:00', 'S01'); INSERT INTO test_data (status, dTime, sys_ID) VALUES (FALSE, '12:15:00', 'S01'); INSERT INTO test_data (status, dTime, sys_ID) VALUES (TRUE, '12:30:00', 'S01'); INSERT INTO test_data (status, dTime, sys_ID) VALUES (FALSE, '10:00:00', 'S02'); INSERT INTO test_data (status, dTime, sys_ID) VALUES (FALSE, '10:15:00', 'S02'); INSERT INTO test_data (status, dTime, sys_ID) VALUES (FALSE, '10:30:00', 'S02'); INSERT INTO test_data (status, dTime, sys_ID) VALUES (FALSE, '10:45:00', 'S02'); INSERT INTO test_data (status, dTime, sys_ID) VALUES (FALSE, '11:00:00', 'S02'); INSERT INTO test_data (status, dTime, sys_ID) VALUES (TRUE, '11:15:00', 'S02'); INSERT INTO test_data (status, dTime, sys_ID) VALUES (TRUE, '11:30:00', 'S02'); Thank you in advance!

• How should I solve this MySql problem (PHP) ? (Beginner)

- by Camran
I have several tables in a MySql database. I have a classifieds website, and at the bottom I display the users last visited classifieds. I do this by storing the ID:s of the ads to an array in the cookie. Now, my db is made up like this kindof: Main Table: // Stores global information, ie these fields have to be filled out in every record, never be blank ID Price category Seller Item Table: // Stores descriptive info about whats for sale ID AD_ID (FK) //This is the same as ID in the MAIN TABLE Color Size Mileage etc My problem is that I need to know what category the ad is in, in order to query mysql for the right information I think. So I need two variables, but the cookie only has one (ID) stored. Offcourse I could make two queries, first one just matching the ID to the main_table and fetch the category from the Main_table. Then make the second query and fetch all other info from the right table. Here is an example if the category was Vehicles: SELECT * FROM main_table, vehicles_table, WHERE main_table.id=$id_from_cookie AND main_table.ad_id=vehicles_table.ad_id As you can see above, I need the category to write in what table to check, right? But I think there must be a smarter way, like fetching them in one single query using only one variable (id from cookie)? How should I do this? Understand? Let me know if you need more input... Thanks

• save to sql server database fromclient side

- by user281693
I have a gridview with dropdownlist in it. When the user changes the item in the dropdownlist I want to save the new item in the database. I want this to happen using javascript and ajax like effect. I know how to access the dropdownlist inside gridview using javascript and I can get the new selectd item. But how can I save it to database without server side code? I know one way of doing this is using web services. I just want to know if there is/are any other ways to do it.
