  • Foreign keys vs partitioning

    - by Industrial
Hi! Since foreign keys are not supported by partitioned mySQL databases for the moment, I would like to hear some pro's and con's for a read-heavy application that will handle around 1-400 000 rows per table. Unfortunately, I dont have enough experience yet in this area to make the conclusion by myself... Thanks a lot! • Sensible Doctrine Expression and Zend_Auth setCredentialTreatment()

    - by takeshin
How to create reasonable expression to store password in database using Doctrine and Zend_Auth::setCredentialTreatment()? I don't want to use md5() and the code must be portable, and with salt. I would call this not easy one to guess: setCredentialTreatment("SHA1(CONCAT(username, SHA1(CONCAT(username, ?)))"); but it is not portable to all databases. Seems that Doctrine_Expression has only md5 expression portability.

  • Delete manytomanyfield in Django

    - by Mike
I have the following models class Database(models.Model): user = models.ForeignKey(User) name = models.CharField(max_length=100) created = models.DateTimeField(auto_now_add=True) updated = models.DateTimeField(auto_now=True) class DatabaseUser(models.Model): user = models.ForeignKey(User) name = models.CharField(max_length=100) password = models.CharField(max_length=100) database = models.ManyToManyField(Database) created = models.DateTimeField(auto_now_add=True) updated = models.DateTimeField(auto_now=True) One DatabaseUser can have many Databases under it's control. The issue I have if I go to delete a Database it wants to Delete the DatabaseUser also.. Is there a way to stop this from happening easily?

  • MS SQL Index Scripting

    - by Fouad Masoud
I'm using MS SQL 2008. Is it possible to create a script to loop over all tables in a database generating a set of index drop scripts and create scripts separately? What I have to do is drop all indexes on a set of databases to run a heavy data load process but then I want to re-enable all the indexes. I don't want to have to go through each table and script an index drop and then index create. Thanks!

  • Delphi / ADO : how to get result of Execute() ?

    - by mawg
I have declared AdoConnection : TADOConnection; and successfully connected to the default "mysql" database (so, no need to pass that code). Now, taking baby steps to learn, I would like to AdoConnection.Execute('SHOW DATABASES', cmdText); which seems to work ok, in the sense that it doesn't throw an exception, but I am such a n00b that I don't know how I can examine the result of the command :-/ Halp!

  • Query two different Servers

    - by Felipe Fiali
I have to query two different servers from a dynamically built query. It basically gets data from one server, treats it, and inserts it into another server. The only problem is I have to be sure it works for both situations: If both the source and destination databases are on the same server, and if they're not. I understand the concept of using Linked Servers in SQL Server, but I cannot think of a way to consider both alternatives, same server and different servers. A little help?

  • SqlMetal, Sql Server 2008 database, Table with HierachyID, dal cs file is created sometimes ?

    - by judek.mp
I have 2 databases with a 2 tables with HierachyID fields. For one database I can get a dal cs file, for the other database I cannot get a dal cs file ? HBus is a database I can get the dal cs for, ... SqlMetal /server:.\SQLSERVER2008 /database:HBus /code:HBusDC.cs /views /functions /sprocs /namespace:HBusDC /context:HBusDataContext This kicks me out a file, ... which works, but excludes the HierarchyID field for the table and includes all other fields for that table. This is OK I do not mind. The above cmd line kicks out an warning but still produces a file, like so SqlMetal /server:.\SQLSERVER2008 /database:HBus /code:HBusDC.cs /views /functions /sprocs /namespace:HBusDC /context:HBusDataContext Microsoft (R) Database Mapping Generator 2008 version 1.00.30729 for Microsoft (R) .NET Framework version 3.5 Copyright (C) Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Warning : SQM1021: Unable to extract column 'OrgNode' of Table 'dbo.HMsg' from SqlServer because the column's DbType is a user-defined type (UDT). Warning : SQM1021: Unable to extract column 'OrgNode' of Table 'dbo.vwHMsg' from SqlServer because the column's DbType is a user-defined type (UDT). HMsg is a table with a HierarchyID field. I have another database, Elf, almost the same thing but I get a warning and an Error when using sql metal and I do not get a dal cs file ... SqlMetal /server:.\SQLSERVER2008 /database:Elf /code:ElfDataContextDal.cs /views /functions /sprocs /namespace:HBusDC /context:HBusDataContext An error as well as the warning and the cs file fails to appear on my disc, ... :-( SqlMetal /server:.\SQLSERVER2008 /database:Elf /code:ElfDataContextDal.cs /views /functions /sprocs /namespace:HBusDC /context:HBusDataContext Microsoft (R) Database Mapping Generator 2008 version 1.00.30729 for Microsoft (R) .NET Framework version 3.5 Copyright (C) Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Warning : SQM1021: Unable to extract column 'OrgNode' of Table 'dbo.EntityLink' from SqlServer because the column's DbType is a user-defined type (UDT). Error : Requested value 'ELF.SYS.HIERARCHYID' was not found. The fields are declared the same way in Elf db OrgNode [HierarchyID] null , in HBus db ... OrgNode [HierarchyID] null , Both databases are in the same instance of sql server 2008, so the HierarchyID is an inbuilt type, neither db has HierarchyID udt ,... cheers in advance for any replies ...

  • where has sun mysql database manager gone???

    - by opensas
If I recall correctly, there where at least to desktop programas from sun which were very useful for handling mysql databases... Now, all I can find is some mysql workbench which is only useful for designing data... Both programs I'm talking about allowed you to manage servers, create database, create tables, index, perform querys, edit data, etc... unfortunately I don't even recall there names... Any idea where I can find them? thanks a lot

  • iPhone SDK / Core Data usage scenario, similar to GAE data store?

    - by boliva
Hi all, I am currently rewriting a map based App which I wrote in the past, specifically for 2.2.1 devices. Originally I wrote it to make use of SQLite databases but I would like to try and migrate it over Core Data, now that it's available on 3.X (for which I am rewriting to). I am fairly experienced in iPhone/Obj-C development, SQL and server backend technologies, but I have never had the chance to work with Core Data so IDK really if it's the appropiate tool for what I am trying to accomplish. The App works on a limited area in a map over which there are about 4000 placemarks, with different kinds of icons and sizes. Of course not all 4000 placemarks are shown at once but only those currently visible in the map viewport, and depending on the zoom level. What I am doing right now is, after the user moves the map in any way (panning or zooming) I am requesting from the backend server the required information for the placemarks that would be visible given the viewport coordinates boundaries and zoom level, however the process isn't as smooth as I'd like (the backend is sending its response in XML and I am compressing it using gzip), it takes anywhere from 1 to 3 seconds to update the display of the placemarks after the user ends moving the map. What I would like to do is to prefetch all the placemarks data at the App launch and use it all through the app life time - I don't mind storing it for later use because the data should be dynamic. The way I would do it right now is, after retrieving all the data, to store it on an SQLite db which I would query later, whenever the user moves the map, to return only the placemarks inside the viewport coordinate boundaries and specific to a given zoom level. Now, the question itself is, if is it possible to use some more 'native', object driven way to carry this queries process, which got me thinking about Core Data and if it is in any way similar to what Google App Engine offers through its datastore where you can fetch a number of objects from the backend given a certain query or criteria, without resorting to an SQL query itself. Like I said before I don't have any experience on Core Data but I have a pretty deep understanding of Obj-C and iPhone development, as well as SQL databases. Any guides on how to achieve what I'm trying (if possible at all) would be greatly appreciated.

  • Database Schema Managing Framework/Library

    - by Karol Kolenda
I'm looking for any database framework/library for .net which will act as a unified layer between an application and databases. Please note that I'm not interested in querying/updating data (there is plenty of DALs for that) but rather a framework which allows me to manage table schemas and indexes in a managed fashion (without using database specific SQL). I'm particularly interested in a library which supports Oracle, SQL Server and PostreSQL.

  • Database tables - how many database?

    - by Thomas
How many databases are needed for a social website? I have my tech team working on developing a social site but all their tables are in 1 database. I wanted to create separate table sets for user data, temporary tables, etc and thinking maybe have one separate database only for critical data, etc but I am not a tech person and now sure how this works? The site is going to be a local reviews website.

  • Querying tables based on other column values

    - by blcArmadillo
Is there a way to query different databases based on the value of a column in the query? Say for example you have the following columns: id part_id attr_id attr_value_ext attr_value_int You then run a query and if the attr_id is '1' is returns the attr_value_int column but if attr_id is greater than '1' it joins data from another table based on the attr_value_ext.

  • Who are the most important people in open-source software? [closed]

    - by poseid
I am reading a book by Malcolm Gladwell on the circumstances of successful careers. The book argues that Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Bill Joy and more succesful computer pioneers were born between 1950-1955, and did absolve around 10000 hours of practice before microcomputers became widely available in the 1970s and their fairy tale success story begins. As we are in the age of web 2.0 with new forms of databases and persuasive access to information, who are in your opinion the most succesful computer programmers or scientists of our times, when were they born and to which technologies they had access?

  • PHP: Is mysql_real_escape_string sufficient for cleaning user input?

    - by Thomas
Is mysql_real_escape_string sufficient for cleaning user input in most situations? ::EDIT:: I'm thinking mostly in terms of preventing SQL injection but I ultimately want to know if I can trust user data after I apply mysql_real_escape_string or if I should take extra measures to clean the data before I pass it around the application and databases. I see where cleaning for HTML chars is important but I wouldn't consider it necessary for trusting user input. T
