  • Alternative to Firefox's Tab Groups feature for Chromium/Chrome

    Firefox keeps crashing the whole time on my Lubuntu 12.04 since version 12, I don't know why, I am running it on a Pentium IV desktop so might be CPU shortage, however I use the same set of extensions and configurations that I have on Windows' Firefox and it rarely crashes, runs smoothly and besides on Windows it can handle much more tabs opened before some freeze actually happens. Chromium is working better so far on Lubuntu, but I really do miss the Tab Groups Firefox feature, which is great to group tabs and organize them, it really is a boost on my productivity. Are you aware of any add-on which is similar for Chrome/Chromium? I've searched around on Chrome's Web Store but no luck at the moment.

  • flashplugin installer works for firefox but not chromium-browser

    I'm on Ubuntu precise (12.04.5 LTS) and I do have flashplugin-installer installed. When I click on flash videos in chromium-browser I get "An error occurred, please try again later". In firefox they display fine. I opened chrome://plugins to see if the flash plugin is installed and indeed it's not listed. Also http://www.codegeek.net/flash-version.php displays: "You do not have Flash player installed", while with firefox it says: You have Flash player 11.2.202 installed. Following some instructions on some ubuntu page I copied the plugin using sudo cp /usr/lib/flashplugin-installer/libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/chromium-browser/plugins/ and I started chromium using chromium-browser --enable-plugins but this didn't help. chrome://chrome/ says: Version 36.0.1985.125 Ubuntu 12.04 (283153). what else can I try?

  • Has form post behavior changed in modern browsers? (or How are double clicks handled by the browser)

    Background: We are in the process of writing a registration/payment page, and our philosophy was to code all validation and error checking on the server side first, and then add client side validation as a second step (un-obstructive jQuery). We wanted to disable double clicks server side, so we wrote some locking, thread-safe code to handle simultaneous posts/race conditions. When we tried to test this, we realized that we could not cause a simultaneous post or race condition to occur. I thought that (in older browsers anyway) double clicking a submit button worked as follows: User double clicks submit button. Browser sends a post on the first click On the second click, browser cancels/ignores initial post, and initiates a second post (before the first post has returned with a response). Browser waits for second post to return, ignoring initial post response. I thought that from the server side it looked like this: Server gets two simultaneous post requests, executes and responds to them both (unaware that no one is listening to the first response). From our testing (FireFox 3.0, IE 8.0) this is what actually happens: User double clicks submit button Browser sends a post for the first click Browser queues up second click, but waits for the response from the first click. Response returns from first click (response is ignored?). Browser sends a post for the second click. So from a server side: Server receives a single post which it executes and responds to. Then, server receives a second request wich it executes and responds to. My question is, has this always worked this way (and I'm losing my mind)? Or is this a new feature in modern browsers that prevents simultaneous posts to be sent to the server? It seems that for server side double click prevention, we don't have to worry about simultaneous posts or race conditions. Only need to worry about queued up posts.     Recently during one of my client side scripting classes, I was trying to show my students some basic examples of JavaScript as an introduction to the language.  My first basic example was to show an alert box using JavaScript via the address bar. The student’s reaction to my browser hack example really caught me off guard in a good way. After programming with a language for close to 10 years you start to lose the "Awe Cool!" effect that new learners of a language experience when writing code. New learns of JavaScript are the reason why I created this post. Please enjoy. Note: Place JavaScript in to address bar and then press the enter key. Example 1: JavaScript Alert box displaying My name: John Doe Javascript:alert('My name: \n John Doe') ; Example 2: JavaScript alert box displaying name entered by user. javascript:alert('My name: \n ' + prompt('Enter Name','Name')) ; Example 3: JavaScript alert box displaying name entered by user, and then displays the length of the name. javascript:var name= prompt('Enter Name','Name'); alert('My name: \n ' + name); alert(name.length); If you notice, the address bar will execute JavaScript on the current page loaded in the browser using the Document Object Model (DOM). Additionally, the address bar will allow multiple lines to be executed sequentially even though all of the code is contained within one line due to the fact that the JavaScript interpreter uses the “;” to indicate where a line of ends and a new one begins.     For a game web app that runs Python on the server side and Javascript / HTML on the client side I'd like to build an offline version that runs in Chrome and on the mobile devices. What is the most convenient way currently available to target Chrome, Win 8 Desktop (with a Win packaged app) and the mobile devices reusing most of the code? Options could be PhoneGap for the mobile devices and PyJs for the offline browser versions or maybe translate Python to Dart manually (because of the closer semantics of the two languages) and compile to Javascript.

  • Can I tweak a page's appearance using Google Chrome's developer tools?

    When I'm working on a web page layout, I often use Firefox and Firebug to tweak the CSS until it looks right, then modify my style sheet to match. Right now, I'm trying to fix something that looks fine in other browsers but wrong in Google Chrome. I have pulled up Chrome's Developer Tools, and can inspect the computed style, but don't see a way to edit values and see the results on my page. Is there a way to do this?

  • Why does my entire page reload in Chrome and Firefox when using asynchronous UpdatePanel postbacks?

    Being a bit perplexed about this issue by now, I hope some of you gurus can shed some light on my problem... I've developed a AJAX-enhanced website, which has been running fine in IE, Chrome and Firefox for a year or so. I use a Timer-control to check for incoming messages every 30 seconds, and this updates an UpdatePanel showing potential new messages. Now several one of my Firefox users complain about the page refreshing every 30 seconds! I my self cannot reproduce this behaviour, but given the "30 seconds"-description, I cursed my Timer-solution as the culprit. But now, I'm experiencing this error myself, not in Firefox though, but in Google Chrome! (And only on one of my two computers!) Every 30 seconds the page reloads! But I found that it's not only related to the Timer, because all other asynchronous postbacks to the server within UpdatePanels reloads the entire page as well. This error has never been experienced in Internet Explorer (to my knowledge). As I said, this it not only related to the Timer postback, but if it's of interest to anybody the code is like this: <asp:Timer runat="server" ID="MailCheckTimer" Interval="30000" OnTick="MailChecker_Tick"></asp:Timer> <asp:UpdatePanel runat="server" ID="MailCheckerUpdatePanel" UpdateMode="Conditional"> <ContentTemplate> <div class="newmail_box" runat="server" id="newmail_box"> <!-- Content stripped for this example --> </div> </ContentTemplate> <Triggers> <asp:AsyncPostBackTrigger ControlID="MailCheckTimer" /> </Triggers> </asp:UpdatePanel> In other places of the website I call the client side __doPostBack function directly from JavaScript in relation to an UpdatePanel. Normal behaviour for this call is to updated the referenced UpdatePanel with some content, but now in Chrome this refreshes the entire page! (but again not consistently, and never in IE) Even the most fundamental UpdatePanel operations like refreshing the content after a button (inside the panel) is clicked, forces the page to reload completely: <asp:Button ID="btnSearch" runat="server" Text="Search" OnClick="btnSearch_Click"></asp:Button> And just to torment me further, I only experience this on my public website, and not in my local development environment, making it a tedious affair for me to find the actual cause! :( Any ideas on why this happens? Why so inconsistently? Has it to do with my UpdatePanel-design? Or does some security setting in Firefox/Chrome that prevent some asynchronous UpdatePanel callbacks? Any help or idea is highly appreciated!

  • HTML5 elements working in Chrome but not Safari or Firefox?

    Hi, I'm using the HTML5 elements and in a project i'm working on (see it here) and the css seems to be working fine in Chrome. However, it doesn't appear to be working in Safari or Firefox (I haven't tested IE, but I'd imagine it's the same), and the page layout is all over the place. Any ideas why this may be? I know Firefox and Safari both support these elements, and Safari is webkit-based like Chrome, so I can't figure out what the problem is.
