  • Dynamic columns/rows

    - by Fuego DeBassi
Wondering--does anyone know of any good articles explaining the CSS technique allowing multiple instances of a class to flow down the page relative to the items above it. Not explaining it that well. Veerle' Pierter's does it on this page: http://veerle.duoh.com/belgiangraphicdesign Although I'm not sure I want to use a technique like her's that requires entering of the height per element via her EE installation. I made a little graphic of what I am trying to acheive; http://cl.ly/71163510ce9d294f9f33 The key is I need a robust technique for doing it. Something where the markup could be as simple as; <div class="box"> Number 1 </div> <div class="box"> Number 2 </div> <div class="box"> Number 3 </div> <div class="box"> Number 4 </div> <div class="box"> Number 5 </div> ... Would love any pointers in the right direction.

  • Dynamic margin (or simulation of margin) between left floated divs

    - by BugBusterX
I have a number of divs floated left. When browser is resized they move down or up based on how many can fit on the line. I was wondering if there is a way to dynamically (with css) have those divs align (or have margin) in a way, that they would always fill the entire screen space by having their marhin resize? In other words margin between them would resize while browser is resized, but as soon as another div can fit it will be added in the line, or if minimum margin is reached and passed another div goes to next line while margins expand again. Here's an example how it is now, resize the wondow to see he leftover space that I want to "fill" <html> <head> <style> .test { float:left; width: 100px; height:100px; background-color: grey; margin: 0 10px 10px 0; } </style> </head> <body> <div class="test"></div> <div class="test"></div> <div class="test"></div> <div class="test"></div> <div class="test"></div> <div class="test"></div> <div class="test"></div> <div class="test"></div> <div class="test"></div> <div class="test"></div> <div class="test"></div> <div class="test"></div> </body> </html>

  • Floated element not included in parent, causing margin-bottom problems

    - by Christian Mann
Right, so I've got a section of a page: <div class="article"> <div class="author"> <img src="images/officers/john_q_public_thm.jpg" /> <span class="name">John Q. Public</span> <span class="position">President</span> </div> <abbr class="postdate"> <span class="month m-01">Jan</span> <span class="day d-31">31</span> <span class="year y-2009">2009</span> </abbr> <div class="content"> <h2 class="title">Article Title</h2> <p>Pellentesque habitant morbi...facilisis luctus, metus</p> <p>Pellentesque habitant morbi...facilisis luctus, metus</p> </div> </div> <div class="article">...</div> <div class="article">...</div> The author and abbr divs are floated to the left. Each one of these article divs needs to be separated from its siblings by 5px or so. However, the author div is extending beyond the technical "height" of the div. The margin-bottom is doing nothing, as the space is being taken up by the floated author. This is somewhat difficult to envision, so I've placed it on my web server Is there any way to force the parent to be at least as tall as all of the floated elements within? If anyone figures out what I'm saying, thanks.

  • Aligning decimal points in HTML

    - by ijw
I have a table containing decimal numbers in one column. I'm looking to align them in a manner similar to a word processor's "decimal tab" feature, so that all the points sit on a vertical line. I have two possible solutions at the moment but I'm hoping for something better... Solution 1: Split the numbers within the HTML, e.g. <td><div>1234</div><div class='dp'>.5</div></td> with .dp { width: 3em; } (Yes, this solution doesn't quite work as-is. The concept is, however, valid.) Solution 2: I found mention of <COL ALIGN="CHAR" CHAR="."> This is part of HTML4 according to the reference page, but it doesn't work in FF3.5, Safari 4 or IE7, which are the browsers I have to hand. It also has the problem that you can't pull out the numeric formatting to CSS (although, since it's affecting a whole column, I suppose that's not too surprising). Thus, anyone have a better idea?

  • How to bring the parent element with floated child elements to the center of the document?

    - by Starx
I have organized a menu. Its HTML is as follows: <ul class="topmenu"> <li><a href="sample.html">Text 1</a></li> <li><a href="sample.html">Text 2</a></li> <li><a href="sample.html">Text 3</a></li> <li><a href="sample.html">Text 4</a></li> <ul> This is a horizontal menu, so I have floated the list items to left to appear them in a horizontal line. I could have used display:inline to appear them in a single line, but since IE does not support it and I don't know any other way to do so, I used float:left;. It's css is: .topmenu { list-style:none; margin:0; padding:0; } .topmenu li { float:left; } This brings the menu in a perfect horizontal line, but the entire list is floated to the left. I want to bring the .topmenu to appear in the center of the document and keep the listitem inside it floated towards the left. I found that this is achievable by defining width property of the .topmenu, but I dont want to fix its width as the list-items are dynamically generated and thus could increase and decrease. Any one know of any solution?

  • Floats being pushed down in IE8 but not IE7 or Firefox

    - by BReno
The page in question is here: http://supportdogs.digitalportals.net/PhotoGallery/16-Events You can see in IE8 that the content is being pushed down under the sidebar. If you view it in IE8 compatibility mode, it doesn't happen, nor does it happen in Firefox. If you browse to a different page in IE8 the issue does not persist. The basic layout is <div class="contentContainer"> <div class="left"></div> <div class="right"></div> </div> The css for those three classes is here #contentContainer { background: transparent url('../images/bodyBG.png') repeat-y center top; clear: both; padding: 0px 30px 0px 30px; margin-top: 83px; width: 935px; } #contentContainer .left { float: left; margin-top: 60px; padding-left: 5px; width: 195px; } #contentContainer .right { float: right; margin: -55px 0px 20px 0px; min-height: 620px; width: 700px; } Anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

  • Anchors with overlapping divs

    - by tmdelane
    I am using a grid based layout, with two main sections. Graph and Timeline. Graph, contains graded vertical bars, HTML similar to: <div id="graph" class="container_160"> <div id="Jan-97" class="grid_1 major"><a href="#">&nbsp;</a></div> <div id="Feb-97" class="grid_1 minor"><a href="#">&nbsp;</a></div> <div id="Mar-97" class="grid_1 minor"><a href="#">&nbsp;</a></div> <div id="Apr-97" class="grid_1 minor"><a href="#">&nbsp;</a></div> <div id="May-97" class="grid_1 minor"><a href="#">&nbsp;</a></div> etc... </div> Timeline, contains horizontal bars, HTML similar to: <div id="timeline" class="container_160"> <div id="bar1" class="grid_32 suffix_128"><a href="#">&nbsp;</a></div> <div id="bar2" class="prefix_32 grid_24 suffix_104"><a href="#">&nbsp;</a></div> <div id="bar3" class="prefix_58 grid_7 suffix_95"><a href="#">&nbsp;</a></div> </div> Timeline is relatively positioned to Graph so that it overlaps. My problem is that when these divs overlap, the anchors in Timeline stop working. I am open to both CSS and Jquery solutions. Thanks in advance. t.

  • Centered DIV w/ width dependant on text, buffered by two divs that should fill the containing DIV

    - by Andrew Thompson
I have been wracking my brains on this seemingly small issue the whole day. My web dev friends are baffled and I could not find a suitable answer in my search of this site and others (though, I could have missed it somewhere along the way). Here's the problem: 3 DIVS within one fixed-width container DIV The center DIV has text that will be different on other sites The center DIV needs to be centered, and no larger than the text it contains. This is what I'd like to end up with The basic HTMl: <div id="container" > <div id="left" ></div> <div id="center" >Text inside center should resize this block</div> <div id="right" ></div> </div> Below, I removed most of the styles I have tried. This CSS currently centers the DIV (if I set it as an inline block), but I need the other divs to fill the left and right space remaining: #container { width:750px; text-align:center; } #left { background-color:#E85355; } #center { background-color:#CDD7D7; display:inline-block; } #right { background-color:#65A8A6; } I've tried floating, no-wrap, overflow, etc. Thanks a million to whomever can offer some help! • Blockquote border on tumblr theme

    - by orange
This is the code for the link block: {block:Link} <div class="post link"> <h2> <a href="{URL}" class="name">{Name}</a></h2> <div class="content"> {block:Description}{Description}{/block:Description} <span class="date"> <a href="{Permalink}">{ShortMonth} {DayOfMonth}, {Year} </a> </span> </div> </div> {/block:Link} What I'm trying to do is add a border-left of of 10px to block quotes. When I try to add this style to block quotes this happens: The block quote border flows into the post title and I don't wish for this to happen, I want the border layout to stay within the content div. I'm using this CSS at the moment: div div div blockquote { border-left: 10px solid red; } Thanks in advance for the help! Just to clarify <div class="post link"> is in another div. • Is there a selector or a work around to select any element with no children.

    - by rnaud
Looking at the CSS3 specs, I can't find any way to select any element that has no children. Let me explain. <body> <h1>Main Page</h1> <div id="main"> <div class="post"> <h2>Article 1</h1> <p>some text</p> </div> <div class="post"> <h2>Article 2</h1> <p>some text</p> </div> </div> </body> I'm looking for a CSS syntax to select the h1, the two h2 and the two p. A way to select in any page, all elements with no children. Any suggestion ? Sorry, I forgot to add the "empty" part, I am actually already using the *:empty selector, but it's not working for any tag that has a nodeText as a child. So it's working for any input, image, object, but not for h2, h1, or any p.

  • Why doesn't my <div> float around another floated <div> while other elements do?

    - by user1848605
    I have a container with background color green. Inside that green <div>, I have a <div> which is black and styled as a box (50px x 50px) - this <div> is floated to the left. Now if I add a <p> to my markup after the grey <div>, I'd expect it to float around the grey <div>. And it does. However, when I substitue with another <div> which is styled as box (set height and width), it doesn't float around anymore, but disappears behind the floating div. Even if I have first paragraphs which are floating around correctly and THEN I add the div (box), the paragraphs stop floating around and appear on another line. HTML: <div id="greencontainer"> <div id="blackbox"></div> <!--this one is float:left;--> <p>A paragraph that floats around the previous div</p> <div id="anotherbox"></div> <!-- if I add another div with set width and height, it disappears behind the floated one, and even prevents the paragraph from floating around.--> </div> CSS: #blackbox { width:50px; height:50px; background-color:black; float:left; } #p { margin:0px; padding:0px; } #anotherbox { width:50px; height:50px; background-color:grey; }

  • How come this relative positioned div is displayed differently in IE?

    - by Camran
    What is with these microsoft browsers? Does microsoft ever do a good job at anything... Anyways, I have a relative positioned div inside another div. The inside-div is positioned with percentage (left: 0%; top:13%). My problem is that in all IE versions the div is displayed some pixels further down than where it is displayed in Chrome, or FF... Anybody recognize this? <div class="nav_container" id="nav_container"> <div id="nav_container2" style="position: relative; left: 0%; top: 13%;"></div> </div> Also, I am just about to browser adjust my website so some article about most common problems with IE is appreciated. Thanks UPDATE: Here is the style for the primary div. .nav_container { background-image: url(../Graphics/menu_lvl1.gif); height: 101px; width: 720px; }

  • Use a table as container or not?

    - by Camran
I have created my entire website by using a main table, and having the content inside the table. Some ppl suggest this is wrong, and I would like to know what to do specifically in my situation. On my index.html I have a <table align="center"> and then all content in it. Now the content is in form of DIVS and they all have relative positioning, so they are relative to the table. For example: <table align="center"> <tr> <td> <div style="position:relative; left:14px; top:50px;"> CONTENT HERE... (Form, divs, images) </div> </td> </tr> </table> I have just gotten to the stage of browser compatibility. Without making any changes whatsoever, my website works perfect in FF, SAFARI, Chrome and Opera. Only trouble with IE. So for my Q, if you where me, would you change my layout and remove the tables, and instead use alot more css and alot more DIVS, or would you go with what I have? And please if you answer me, don't just provide me with the answer, but also a "why" that is... in other words, give me arguments and facts... Thanks

  • Internet Explorer 6 and 7: floated elements expand to 100% width when they contain a child element f

    - by Paul D. Waite
I've got a parent div floated left, with two child divs that I need to float right. The parent div should (if I understand the spec correctly) be as wide as needed to contain the child divs, and this is how it behaves in Firefox et al. In IE, the parent div expands to 100% width. This seems to be an issue with floated elements that have children floated right. Test page: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" lang="en" xml:lang="en"> <head> <title>Float test</title> </head> <body> <div style="border-top:solid 10px #0c0;float:left;"> <div style="border-top:solid 10px #00c;float:right;">Tester 1</div> <div style="border-top:solid 10px #c0c;float:right;">Tester 2</div> </div> </body> </html> Unfortunately I can't fix the width of the child divs, so I can't set a fixed width on the parent. Is there a CSS-only workaround to make the parent div as wide as the child divs?

  • Creating a new instance, C#

    - by Dave Voyles
This sounds like a very n00b question, but bear with me here: I'm trying to access the position of my bat (paddle) in my pong game and use it in my ball class. I'm doing this because I want a particle effect to go off at the point of contact where the ball hits the bat. Each time the ball hits the bat, I receive an error stating that I haven't created an instance of the bat. I understand that I have to (or can use a static class), but I'm not sure of how to do so in this example. I've included both my Bat and Ball classes. namespace Pong { #region Using Statements using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using Microsoft.Xna.Framework; using Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Audio; using Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Content; using Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Graphics; using Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Input; #endregion public class Ball { #region Fields private readonly Random rand; private readonly Texture2D texture; private readonly SoundEffect warp; private double direction; private bool isVisible; private float moveSpeed; private Vector2 position; private Vector2 resetPos; private Rectangle size; private float speed; private bool isResetting; private bool collided; private Vector2 oldPos; private ParticleEngine particleEngine; private ContentManager contentManager; private SpriteBatch spriteBatch; private bool hasHitBat; private AIBat aiBat; private Bat bat; #endregion #region Constructors and Destructors /// <summary> /// Constructor for the ball /// </summary> public Ball(ContentManager contentManager, Vector2 ScreenSize) { moveSpeed = 15f; speed = 0; texture = contentManager.Load<Texture2D>(@"gfx/balls/redBall"); direction = 0; size = new Rectangle(0, 0, texture.Width, texture.Height); resetPos = new Vector2(ScreenSize.X / 2, ScreenSize.Y / 2); position = resetPos; rand = new Random(); isVisible = true; hasHitBat = false; // Everything to do with particles List<Texture2D> textures = new List<Texture2D>(); textures.Add(contentManager.Load<Texture2D>(@"gfx/particle/circle")); textures.Add(contentManager.Load<Texture2D>(@"gfx/particle/star")); textures.Add(contentManager.Load<Texture2D>(@"gfx/particle/diamond")); particleEngine = new ParticleEngine(textures, new Vector2()); } #endregion #region Public Methods and Operators /// <summary> /// Checks for the collision between the bat and the ball. • CSS: Freeze table header and first column, *but only on certain axes*

    - by Mega Matt
Hello all, I have a variation on a common question, and I'll try to explain it as best I can. It may take some visualization on your part. I have an HTML table (in reality there are tables within tables within divs within tables -- I'm using the JSGantt plugin). I'd like for the table header to be frozen only when I scroll down on the y-axis, but if I need to scroll right to see more data, I would like it to scroll right. Meanwhile, as I scroll down (with the header row staying put), I'd like the first column of the table to scroll down with me. But when I scroll right, I want the first column to stay put (but as I mentioned above, the header row to scroll with me). So essentially I've frozen the first column only on the x-axis and the header row only on the y-axis. I'll stop there for now. If anyone needs more clarification I can try to explain. I've tried this multiple ways, but I'm convinced that it may not be possible without some serious javascript. The table, by the way, is contained within an outer div with set dimensions, hence the need for me to scroll the data. Any help you can provide would be greatly appeciated. Thanks very much.

  • on hover overlay image in CSS

    - by Juventus
I need a div with picture bg to overlay an image (with some amount transparency) when hovered on. I need to be able to have one transparent overlay that can be used and reused throughout the site on any image. My first attempt was round-about to say the least. Because I found out you cannot roll-over an invisible div I devised a sandwhich system in which the original image is the first layer, the overlay is the second layer, and the original image is third layer again. This way, when you roll-over, the original image disappears revealing the overlay image over the original image: http://www.nightlylabs.com/uploads/test.html So it works. Kinda. Because of you cannot interact with an visibility:invisible element (why?!) the roll-over flickers unless you rest the cursor on it. Any help? This method is bad so if anyone has a better one please comment.

  • Div positioning problem related to Relative and Absolute positioning

    - by abszero
    Hello everyone. The problem I am running into is related to a footer I have absolutely positioned at the bottom of the page. Everything is fine until the copy on the page begins to extend further down the page which then causes my content wells to extend down, behind, the footer. Is there anyway I can force my content wells to 'push' the footer down the page? Here is the relevant html: <div id="page"> <div id="page_container"> <div id="header"></div> <div id="nav"></div> <div id="main_content"> <div id="left_column"></div> <div id="right_column"></div> </div> </div> </div> <div id="footer"> <div id="footer_container"> </div> </div> And the relevant CSS #page {width:100%;margin:0 0 10px 0; text-align:center;} #page_container {width:743px;height:auto !important;height:100%;margin:0 auto;min-height:100%;text-align:center;overflow:hidden;border:2px solid #000;} #header {width:100%;background:url('../images/header.jpg');height:87px;clear:both; margin-top: -2px;} #nav {width:100%;height:29px;float:left; text-align:left; border-bottom: solid 2px #000; border-top: solid 2px #000;} #main_content {width:100%;float:left; text-align:left; background-color:#fff; border-bottom: solid 2px #000; border-left: solid 2px #000; border-right: solid 2px #000;} #footer {width:100%; position:absolute;margin-top:10px; bottom: 0; background:url('../images/footer_bg.jpg');height:133px;text-align:center;} #footer_container{width:746px;height:133px; text-align:left; display:inline-block;} #left_column {width:230px; float:left; text-align:left; background-color:#fff; margin-top:5px;} #right_column {width:490px; float:right; text-align:left; background-color:#fff;margin-top:5px; padding:10px;} Thanks for any help you might be able to give!

  • Fluid CSS: floating column with max-width and overflow

    - by Ates Goral
I'm using a fluid layout in the new theme that I'm working on for my blog. I often blog about code and include <pre> blocks within the posts. The float: left column for the content area has a max-width so that the column stops at a certain maximum width and can also be shrunk: +----------+ +------+ | text | | text | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | +----------+ +------+ max shrunk What I want is for the <pre> elements to be wider than the text column so that I can fit 80-character-wrapped code without horizontal scroll bars. But I want the <pre> elements to overflow from the content area, without affecting its fluidity: +----------+ +------+ | text | | text | | | | | +----------+--+ +------+------+ | code | | code | +----------+--+ +------+------+ | | | | +----------+ +------+ max shrunk But, max-width stops being fluid once I insert the overhanging <pre> in there: the width of the column remains at the specified max-width even when I shrink the browser beyond that width. I've reproduced the issue with this bare-minimum scenario: <div style="float: left; max-width: 460px; border: 1px solid red"> <p>Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipisicing elit</p> <pre style="max-width: 700px; border: 1px solid blue"> function foo() { // Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipisicing elit } </pre> <p>Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipisicing elit</p> </div> I noticed that doing either of the following brings back the fluidity: Remove the <pre> (doh...) Remove the float: left The workaround I'm currently using is to insert the <pre> elements into "breaks" in the post column, so that the widths of the post segments and the <pre> segments are managed mutually exclusively: +----------+ +------+ | text | | text | +----------+ +------+ +-------------+ +-------------+ | code | | code | +-------------+ +-------------+ +----------+ +------+ +----------+ +------+ max shrunk But this forces me to insert additional closing and opening <div> elements into the post markup which I'd rather keep semantically pristine. Admittedly, I don't have a full grasp of how the box model works with floats with overflowing content, so I don't understand why the combination of float: left on the container and the <pre> inside it cripple the max-width of the container. I'm observing the same problem on Firefox/Chrome/Safari/Opera. IE6 (the crazy one) seems happy all the time. This also doesn't seem dependent on quirks/standards mode. Update I've done further testing to observe that max-width seems to get ignored when the element has a float: left. I glanced at the W3C box model chapter but couldn't immediately see an explicit mention of this behaviour. Any pointers?

  • Print.css issue in Webkit

    - by Andrew
The page in question is featured here: http://www.allwebcafe.com/news/news-article.php?id=78 For some reason, when a user attempts to print any article of this type from a Webkit-based browser (I've confirmed this in both Safari and Chrome), the pages are all blank. On the flip side, everything behaves as expected in both Firefox and Internet Explorer. Thoughts?

  • IE6 (yes, IE6) css spacing issue

    - by Tim
Hey Guys I'm basically building this page which obviously works fine in all browsers apart from IE6, where a small space appears below the cart. The background also has a gap in it in IE6, so I'm wondering what my be causing that, as it's probably related to the main issue. The html can be found here: http://bit.ly/94CjAJ If anyone could help I would REALLY appreciate it!!!! Many thanks
