  • Hex Dump using LINQ (in 7 lines of code)

    - by Fabrice Marguerie
    Eric White has posted an interesting LINQ query on his blog that shows how to create a Hex Dump in something like 7 lines of code.Of course, this is not production grade code, but it's another good example that demonstrates the expressiveness of LINQ.Here is the code:byte[] ba = File.ReadAllBytes("test.xml");int bytesPerLine = 16;string hexDump = ba.Select((c, i) => new { Char = c, Chunk = i / bytesPerLine })    .GroupBy(c => c.Chunk)    .Select(g => g.Select(c => String.Format("{0:X2} ", c.Char))        .Aggregate((s, i) => s + i))    .Select((s, i) => String.Format("{0:d6}: {1}", i * bytesPerLine, s))    .Aggregate("", (s, i) => s + i + Environment.NewLine);Console.WriteLine(hexDump); Here is a sample output:000000: FF FE 3C 00 3F 00 78 00 6D 00 6C 00 20 00 76 00000016: 65 00 72 00 73 00 69 00 6F 00 6E 00 3D 00 22 00000032: 31 00 2E 00 30 00 22 00 20 00 65 00 6E 00 63 00000048: 6F 00 64 00 69 00 6E 00 67 00 3D 00 22 00 75 00000064: 3E 00Eric White reports that he typically notices that declarative code is only 20% as long as imperative code.   • Should I create my own Assert class based on these reasons?

    - by Mike
    The main reason I don't like Debug.Assert is the fact that these assertions are disabled in Release. I know that there's a performance reason for that, but at least in my situation I believe the gains would outweigh the cost. (By the way, I'm guessing this is the situation in most cases). And yes, I know that you can use Trace.Assert instead. But even though that would work, I find the name Trace distracting, since I don't see this as tracing. The other reason to create my own class is laziness I guess, since I could write methods for the most usual cases like Assert.IsNotNull, Assert.Equals and so forth. The second part of my question has to do with using Environment.FailFast in this class. Would that be a good idea? I do like the ideas put forth in this document. That's pretty much where I got the idea from. One last point. Does creating a design like this imply having an untestable code path, as described in this answer by Eric Lippert on a different (but related) question?

  • Decreasing Root Disk Size of an "EBS Boot" AMI on EC2

    - by darkAsPitch
    So I have followed Eric's wonderful article here: http://alestic.com/2009/12/ec2-ebs-boot-resize This was the code basically that helped me increase the default size of the AMI: ec2-run-sintances ami-ID -n 1 --key keypair.pem --block-device-mapping "/dev/sda1=:250" Running Ubuntu 11.10 I didn't even have to re-size the disk afterwards, it was immediately a 250GB drive. How do I go about decreasing the default size of the AMI??? I tried: ec2-run-sintances ami-ID -n 1 --key keypair.pem --block-device-mapping "/dev/sda1=:100" Obviously... but I was told: Client.InvalidBlockDeviceMapping: Volume of size 100GB is smaller than snapshot ####### <250

  • Looking for an easier Skype video chat alternative

    - by Paul
    Is there any software 'easier to use' than Skype - ie to get a video conversation going you have to turn on the computer, make sure the speakers are turned on, make sure the web cam is connected, make sure you click answer with Video... I would like to buy a 'single red button' which does all of the above. - Any recommendations? Update @Eric Koslow comment My original question title was "Is there any software/hardware 'easier to use' than Skype?" So the answer is not necessarily a computer running a program, although it might be. I realise Skype makes a good attempt at helping to ensure speakers and web cam are working and helps you to sort them out if they are not, and for a person who isnt computer phobic this should be enough. However I am interested if there is anything available that is 'easier' than this - ie I'm looking for my 'single' red button. ie the mobile phone with video call maybe the closest answer so far, but I would prefer something as 'free' as Skype is.

  • Halloween: Season for Java Embedded Internet of Spooky Things (IoST) (Part 4)

    - by hinkmond
    And now here's the Java code that you'll need to read your ghost sensor on your Raspberry Pi The general idea is that you are using Java code to access the GPIO pin on your Raspberry Pi where the ghost sensor (JFET trasistor) detects minute changes in the electromagnetic field near the Raspberry Pi and will change the GPIO pin to high (+3 volts) when something is detected, otherwise there is no value (ground). Here's that Java code: try { /*** Init GPIO port(s) for input ***/ // Open file handles to GPIO port unexport and export controls FileWriter unexportFile = new FileWriter("/sys/class/gpio/unexport"); FileWriter exportFile = new FileWriter("/sys/class/gpio/export"); for (String gpioChannel : GpioChannels) { System.out.println(gpioChannel); // Reset the port File exportFileCheck = new File("/sys/class/gpio/gpio"+gpioChannel); if (exportFileCheck.exists()) { unexportFile.write(gpioChannel); unexportFile.flush(); } // Set the port for use exportFile.write(gpioChannel); exportFile.flush(); // Open file handle to input/output direction control of port FileWriter directionFile = new FileWriter("/sys/class/gpio/gpio" + gpioChannel + "/direction"); // Set port for input directionFile.write(GPIO_IN); } /*** Read data from each GPIO port ***/ RandomAccessFile[] raf = new RandomAccessFile[GpioChannels.length]; int sleepPeriod = 10; final int MAXBUF = 256; byte[] inBytes = new byte[MAXBUF]; String inLine; int zeroCounter = 0; // Get current timestamp with Calendar() Calendar cal; DateFormat dateFormat = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyy/MM/dd HH:mm:ss.SSS"); String dateStr; // Open RandomAccessFile handle to each GPIO port for (int channum=0; channum And, then we just load up our Java SE Embedded app, place each Raspberry Pi with a ghost sensor attached in strategic locations around our Santa Clara office (which apparently is very haunted by ghosts from the Agnews Insane Asylum 1906 earthquake), and watch our analytics for any ghosts. Easy peazy. • How to avoid throwing vexing exceptions?

    - by Mike
    Reading Eric Lippert's article on exceptions was definitely an eye opener on how I should approach exceptions, both as the producer and as the consumer. However, I'm still struggling to define a guideline regarding how to avoid throwing vexing exceptions. Specifically: Suppose you have a Save method that can fail because a) Somebody else modified the record before you, or b) The value you're trying to create already exists. These conditions are to be expected and not exceptional, so instead of throwing an exception you decide to create a Try version of your method, TrySave, which returns a boolean indicating if the save succeeded. But if it fails, how will the consumer know what was the problem? Or would it be best to return an enum indicating the result, kind of Ok/RecordAlreadyModified/ValueAlreadyExists? With integer.TryParse this problem doesn't exist, since there's only one reason the method can fail. Is the previous example really a vexing situation? Or would throwing an exception in this case be the preferred way? I know that's how it's done in most libraries and frameworks, including the Entity framework. How do you decide when to create a Try version of your method vs. providing some way to test beforehand if the method will work or not? I'm currently following these guidelines: If there is the chance of a race condition, then create a Try version. This prevents the need for the consumer to catch an exogenous exception. For example, in the Save method described before. If the method to test the condition pretty much would do all that the original method does, then create a Try version. For example, integer.TryParse(). In any other case, create a method to test the condition.

Architects Matter: Making sense of the people who make sense of enterprise IT Why do architects matter? Oracle Enterprise Architect Eric Stephens suggests that you ask yourself that question the next time you take the elevator to the Oracle offices on the 45th floor of the Willis Tower in Chicago, Illinois (or any other skyscraper, for that matter). • I'm a Subversion geek, why should I consider or not consider Mercurial or Git or any other DVCS?

    - by user2567
    I try to understand the benefits of distributed version control system (DVCS). I found Subversion Re-education and this article by Martin Fowler very useful. Mercurial and others DVCS promote a new way of working on code with changesets and local commits. It prevents from merging hell and other collaboration issues We are not affected by this as I practice continuous integration and working alone in a private branch is not an option, unless we are experimenting. We use a branch for every major version, in which we fix bugs merged from the trunk. Mercurial allows you to have lieutenants I understand this can be useful for very large projects like Linux, but I don't see the value in small and highly collaborative teams (5 to 7 people). Mercurial is faster, takes less disk space and full local copy allows faster logs & diffs operations. I'm not concerned by this either, as I didn't notice speed or space problems with SVN even with very large projects I'm working on. I'm seeking for your personal experiences and/or opinions from former SVN geeks. Especially regarding the changesets concept and overall performance boost you measured. UPDATE (12th Jan): I'm now convinced that it worth a try. UPDATE (12th Jun): I kissed Mercurial and I liked it. The taste of his cherry local commits. I kissed Mercurial just to try it. I hope my SVN Server don't mind it. It felt so wrong. It felt so right. Don't mean I'm in love tonight. FINAL UPDATE (29th Jul): I had the privilege to review Eric Sink's next book called Version Control by Example. He finished to convince me. I'll go for Mercurial.

  • How do I move *all* the installed software on my EC2 isntance to EBS?

    - by drhyde
    I got started with Eric Hammond's great article over at http://aws.amazon.com/articles/1663 where he goes through installing MySQL and configuring it to use EBS. I got that going. I also have a lot of other stuff installed on that EC2 instance: Rails, a bunch of gems, Nginx+Passenger and so on - my understanding is that unless I explicitly configure it to use EBS, all of this sits on the EC2 instance's ephemeral storage - right? How can I move all the software I have installed to EBS - or better yet how can I set up such that going forward also any new gems etc that I install also go to the EBS volume?

  • How to setup a project to use TweetSharp

    - by Stuart Helwig
    I am trying to follow Pete Brown's introductory WPF tutorial which makes use of the TweetSharp libraries to interact with Twitter. I have downloaded what appears to be the latest TweetSharp binaries (and a few others including the ReleaseCandidate) from Codeplex (http://tweetsharp.codeplex.com/). No matter what references I add and no matter what using statements I try, I cannot create a reference to the TwitterService for the FluentTwitter class. I simply get the compiler error - "The type or namespace cannot be found". Now I've noticed that the TweetSharp.dll that Pete references is 518KB but the one contained in each of my different downloads is only 84kb. (I've tried several times - I am getting the full download here). The link from Pete's article to the TweetSharp libraries, no longer works (http://code.google.com/p/tweetsharp/). What basic element am I missing here or what could I be doing wrong?

  • Is it possible to use best_in_place with typeahead from twitter bootstrap?

    - by Dave H
    Basically, I am using best_in_place in my rails webapp to let users edit their profile info in place. The thing is, I would like users to be presented with a typeahead form for certain entries.. Here's what I'm working with: <p>College/University: <input type="text" class="span3" style="margin: 0 auto;" data-provide="typeahead" data-items="8" data-source='["University of Pennsylvania","Harvard","Yale","Princeton","Cornell","Brown","Columbia","Dartmouth"]'></p> This gives me a working form box with typeahead. However, I want to be able to wrap this in best_in_place with something like <%= best_in_place @student, :education %> so that users only see the typeahead form when they click on the text, and upon clicking away from the box or hitting enter the selection is stored in the database. Is there a reasonably easy way to do this?

I have something like this: function cat_filter() { $.ajax({ type: "POST", url: 'json/cat_filter.aspx', data: "catId=" + "&styleId=" + "&colourId=" + "&sizeId=" + "&minPrice=" + "&maxPrice=", dataType: "json", beforeSend: function () { //load loading cursor }, success: function (data) { var CatItems = ""; for (var x = 0; x < data.PRODUCTS.length; x++) { CatItems += '<li class="jcarousel-item jcarousel-item-horizontal jcarousel-item-' + [x] + ' jcarousel-item-' + [x] + '-horizontal jcarousel-item-placeholder jcarousel-item-placeholder-horizontal"><a class="large_image" href="#"><img src="' + data.PRODUCTS[x].product_img + '" alt="' + data.PRODUCTS[x].product_name + '"></a><h3 class="geo_17_darkbrown">' + data.PRODUCTS[x].product_name + '</h3>'; if (data.PRODUCTS[x].product_onsale == 1) { CatItems += '<img alt="sale" src="assets/images/sale.gif" class="sale"><span class="geo_17_red_linethr">&pound;' + data.PRODUCTS[x].product_retailprice + '</span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<span class="price geo_17_darkbrown">&pound;' + data.PRODUCTS[x].product_webprice + '</span>'; } else { CatItems += '<span class="price geo_17_darkbrown">&pound;' + data.PRODUCTS[x].product_webprice + '</span>'; } if (data.PRODUCTS[x].product_COLOURS) { CatItems += '<span class="colour">'; for (var y = 0; y < data.PRODUCTS[x].product_COLOURS.length; y++) { CatItems += '<span><a href="' + data.PRODUCTS[x].product_COLOURS[y].colours_large + '"><img src="' + data.PRODUCTS[x].product_COLOURS[y].colours_thumb + '" alt="' + data.PRODUCTS[x].product_COLOURS[y].colour_name + '" /></a></span>'; } CatItems += '</span>'; } CatItems += '</li>'; } $('.carousel_00 ul').html(CatItems); }, complete: function () { //remove loading cursor } }); } This code generates this html: <div class="carousel_00"> <ul> <li><a href="#" class="large_image"><img src="assets/images/dress1.gif" alt="image"></a> <h3 class="geo_17_darkbrown">Rachel Dress</h3> <span class="price geo_17_darkbrown">&pound;89.99</span> <span class="colour"> <span><a href="assets/images/big_image_1.gif"><img src="assets/images/black.gif" alt="balck"></a></span> <span><img src="assets/images/brown.gif" alt="brown"></span> <span><img src="assets/images/purple.gif" alt="purple"></span> </span> </li> <li><a href="#"><img src="assets/images/dress2.gif" alt="image"></a> <h3 class="geo_17_darkbrown">Rachel Dress</h3> <span class="price geo_17_darkbrown">&pound;89.99</span> </li> <li><img class="sale" src="assets/images/sale.gif" alt="sale" /><a href="#"><img src="assets/images/dress3.gif" alt="image"></a> <h3 class="geo_17_darkbrown">Rachel Dress</h3> <span class="geo_17_red_linethr">&pound;99.99</span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<span class="price geo_17_darkbrown">&pound;89.99</span> </li> <li><a href="#"><img src="assets/images/dress1.gif" alt="image"></a> <h3 class="geo_17_darkbrown">Rachel Dress</h3> <span class="price geo_17_darkbrown">&pound;59.99</span> </li> <li><a href="#"><img src="assets/images/dress2.gif" alt="image"></a> <h3 class="geo_17_darkbrown">Rachel Dress</h3> <span class="price geo_17_darkbrown">&pound;89.99</span> </li> <li><a href="#"><img src="assets/images/dress3.gif" alt="image"></a> <h3 class="geo_17_darkbrown">Rachel Dress</h3> <span class="price geo_17_darkbrown">&pound;89.99</span> </li> <li><a href="#"><img src="assets/images/dress1.gif" alt="image"></a> <h3 class="geo_17_darkbrown">Rachel Dress</h3> <span class="price geo_17_darkbrown">&pound;89.99</span> </li> <li><a href="#"><img src="assets/images/dress2.gif" alt="image"></a> <h3 class="geo_17_darkbrown">Rachel Dress</h3> <span class="price geo_17_darkbrown">&pound;89.99</span> </li> <li><a href="#"><img src="assets/images/dress3.gif" alt="image"></a> <h3 class="geo_17_darkbrown">Rachel Dress</h3> <span class="price geo_17_darkbrown">&pound;89.99</span> </li> </ul></div> What I need is that every 3 li's will be in div /div. I know that this is not semantic and not right, but this is only for example. (Basically if I will figure put how to do this, I will replace li's on spans and that div that i need outside li's on li). Will be very glad if someone will help me. Because code that I have is already too much for me.
