  • Preventing threads from writing to the same file

    - by EpsilonVector
    I'm implementing an FTP-like protocol in Linux kernel 2.4 (homework), and I was under the impression that if a file is open for writing any subsequent attempt to open it by another thread should fail, until I actually tried it and discovered it goes through. How do I prevent this from happening? PS: I'm using open() to open the file.

  • Archive format & tool for large amounts of data (50gb+)

    - by marcusstarnes
    I only realised this afternoon that the ZIP format has a limit of what appears to be around 20gb. I am trying to automate an archive process (using Automate) to zip/rar/whatever a collection of folders/files on one of my disks. It always appeared to bomb out with an incomplete archive at about 20gb. So I tried using WinRAR and doing it manually as a ZIP file, but it told me of the limit. So, I was wondering, what is a recommended zip format (and tool for accomplishing the task) for archiving up a large amount of data (around 50gb)?

  • Is it better to store user text (such as a blog entry or private messages) in the database or as flat files?

    - by Fredashay
    I'm building a social networking type site that will be storing large chunks of text that's entered by users, such as blog entries and private messages. As such, these will be entered once, with minimal revisions, but many reads by multiple users over time. I'm using MySQL, by the way. My concerns are: Storing large blocks of text on the database will fill the database to capacity eventually. I read somewhere that storing user text in flat files is a security risk? (The filenames will be generated dynamically by the PHP, not by the user.) Storing them as text files may cause them to become out of sync if I ever have to reinitialize the database and restore it from backups. What are all your thoughts and advice, pros and cons?

  • Is there a common way to access files, that works both on android and PC?

    - by m01
    Hi, I'm writing an application that will ship in two versions: Android and PC version. Is there a simple way to access files from the shared code? Using java.io is simple, but I don't know how to access android resources or assets using it. And I can't write methods that operate on FileInputStreams instead, because some files contain references to another ones, so I need a way to access them from the method code. Any suggestions?

  • Prompt with UAC when user doesn't have access to copy a file

    - by Will Eddins
    In my application, if the user saves a file to a folder they don't have permissions for, File.Copy will fail. An example is saving a document to the C:\ root. Instead of denying access, I'd like to prompt the user to elevate permissions with a UAC prompt, but only for this save function (not for the entire application). Is there a way to do this?

  • [MS-DOS] Read command-line parameters to .bat from file

    - by John
    I have a build.bat file which uses %1 internally... so you might call: build 1.23 I wanted it to read the parameter from a separate file, so I tried putting "1.23" in version.txt and doing: build < version.txt But it doesn't work. Isn't this how piping works? Is what I want possible and if so how?

  • Using * Width & Precision Specifiers With boost::format

    - by John Dibling
    I am trying to use width and precision specifiers with boost::format, like this: #include <boost\format.hpp> #include <string> int main() { int n = 5; std::string s = (boost::format("%*.*s") % (n*2) % (n*2) % "Hello").str(); return 0; } But this doesn't work because boost::format doesn't support the * specifier. Boost throws an exception when parsing the string. Is there a way to accomplish the same goal, preferably using a drop-in replacement?

    Hi guys I need to convert a string to a monetary format of {###}.###.###,## that is a value of 5461497702600 would become 54.614.977.026,00 The numbers become excessively large. • correct format for datetime appended to filename

    - by jhayes
    I'm trying to setup a batch file to execute a set of stored procs and dump the output to a timestamped text file. I'm having problems finding the correct format for the timestamp. Here is what I'm using osql.exe -S <server> -E -Q "EXEC <stored procedure> " -o "c:\filename_%date:~-0,10%_%time:~-0,10%.txt" The error I get is: Cannot open output file - x:\filename_Thu 06/25/_16:26:43.1.txt No such file or directory I can't find the documentation and I've played around with it but can't find the correct format.

  • Python 3.2: How to pass a dictionary into str.format()

    - by Robert Dailey
    I've been reading the Python 3.2 docs about string formatting but it hasn't really helped me with this particular problem. Here is what I'm trying to do: stats = { 'copied': 5, 'skipped': 14 } print( 'Copied: {copied}, Skipped: {skipped}'.format( stats ) ) The above code will not work because the format() call is not reading the dictionary values and using those in place of my format placeholders. How can I modify my code to work with my dictionary?

  • Formatting Dates, Times and Numbers in ASP.NET

    Formatting is the process of converting a variable from its native type into a string representation. Anytime you display a DateTime or numeric variables in an ASP.NET page, you are formatting that variable from its native type into some sort of string representation. How a DateTime or numeric variable is formatted depends on the culture settings and the format string. Because dates and numeric values are formatted differently across cultures, the .NET Framework bases its formatting on the specified culture settings. By default, the formatting routines use the culture settings defined on the web server, but you can indicate that a particular culture be used anytime you format. In addition to the culture settings, formatting is also affected by a format string, which spells out the formatting details to apply. The .NET Framework contains a bounty of format strings. There are standard format strings, which are typically a single letter that applies detailed formatting logic. For example, the "C" format specifier will format a numeric type as a currency value; the "Y" format specifier displays the month name and four-digit year of the specified DateTime value. There are also custom format strings, which display a apply a very specific formatting rule. These custom format strings can be put together to build more intricate formats. For instance, the format string "dddd, MMMM d" displays the full day of the week name followed by a comma followed by the full name of the month followed by the day of the month. For more involved formatting scenarios, where neither the standard or custom format strings cut the mustard, you can always create your own formatting extension methods. This article explores the standard format strings for dates, times and numbers and includes a number of custom formatting methods I've created and use in my own projects. There's also a demo application you can download that lets you specify a culture and then shows you the output for the standard format strings for the selected culture. Read on to learn more! • What is the best strategy for transforming unicode strings into filenames?

    - by David Cowden
    I have a bunch (thousands) of resources in an RDF/XML file. I am writing a certain subset of the resources to files -- one file for each, and I'm using the resource's title property as the file name. However, the titles are every day article, website, and blog post titles, so they contain characters unsafe for a URI (the necessary step for constructing a valid file path). I know of the Jersey UriBuilder but I can't quite get it to work for my needs as I detailed in a different question on SO. Some possibilities I have considered are: Since each resource should also have an associated URL, I could try to use the name of the file on the server. The down side of this is sometimes people don't name their content logically and I think the title of an article better reflects the content that will be in each text file. Construct a white list of valid characters and parse the string myself defining substitutions for unsafe characters. The downside of this is the result could be just as unreadable as the former solution because presumably the content creators went through a similar process when placing the files on their server. Choose a more generic naming scheme, place the title in the text file along with the other attributes, and tell my boss to live with it. So my question here is, what methods work well for dealing with a scenario where you need to construct file names out of strings with potentially unsafe characters? Is there a solution that better fills out my constraints?

  • How file permissions are stored in inode?

    - by Debadyuti Maiti
    Suppose there's two pc - "A" and "B". Then if A downloads a files from B , then what would be the file permission of that downloaded file? Is it possible that the downloaded file in A will have an Inode entry with all it's permissions from B & store B's user account as the owner ? If that's the case then is it impossible to change that files permission on A if "others" [as in user-group-others] doesn't have the right to write on that file? e.g. if this is the case , __x __x __x file.txt [On B] then what would be the file permission on A of that same file downloaded from B [e.g. through vsftpd]? __x __x __x file.txt [On A] or rw_x rw_x rw_x file.txt [On A] [i.e. defined by A's default umask value]
