  • Is there a peripheral that lets my computer monitor the connectivity of pairs of wires?

    I've got a bunch of physical switches and circuits that act like switches (they're either connected to ground or they're just an open wire). Is there some sort of thing I can plug into my computer (ideally, via USB) that has a bunch of screw terminals, and I can attach wires to the screws and have the computer keep track of which circuits are closed and which are open? Bonus points if the device also lets the computer open and close switches, too. I don't even know what to google for.

  • Windows Mobile 7 corporate device...

    Does anyone know of a Windows Mobile 7 device aimed at business use? I’m looking for something with bar code scanning capability. Psion, hand held, and honeywell only offer 6.5 at the moment. Granted, Windows Mobile 7 just barely came out and these sorts of devices usually lag a bit behind consumer toys...but hopefully someone can help.

  • Upgrade no raid server to raid

    I have just learned that our PDC has a single drive with 2 partitions. I also know that this drive has bad blocks as recorded in the event log. What I would like to do is to convert this to a RAID solution with a nice balance between economy and performance. I will admit that I have only configured servers with RAID from scratch, and have no experience upgrading an existing system into a RAID system. In fact, I'm not sure it is even possible. Since this is the PDC for 350+ workstations downtime is important. I'd like to hear from other System Administators how they would tackle this and their recommendations for all devices. At this time it seems to me that I can replace the existing drive and then restore from backup or install a controller, drives, configure the RAID an basically start from scratch.   • Laptop powering off after 10 mins or so

    I have no OS installed, and I am trying to use a linux boot disc. However it is not a linux problem....if I just leave the computer on at the no operating system found message, it still turns off. I thought maybe it was overheating, but I am 90% sure that is not the problem. What else could cause this? I should have mentioned, it's a laptop.

    Hi fellow geeks, recently my computer started to behave like an old car and won't start up anymore unless I flip the power switch repeatedly. What happens when I power it on: CPU fans spins briefly and very slowly, then it stops Same with GPU fan No BIOS beeps or HDD activity Screen stays black After turning it on and off for like 10 times, it'll eventually boot like normal and run smooth without any problems what-so-ever. But I'm worried it might eventually die completely. Anyone know the most common cause of this? Maybe I should just leave the computer powered on? :)

  • Starting old computer - nothing shown on screen at boot

    I'm trying to start an about 10 years old PC computer. But nothing is shown on the screen, and it beeps everytime I press a key on the keyboard. I can press Ctrl+Alt+Del to reboot the computer. The monitor is newer and seem to work with other computers. I don't see anything from POST/BIOS at start or later. I have tried to change to another graphic card, but it didn't change anything. What can I do to solve this problem? Update: I have now tried with another computer (the one where the "another graphic card" came from) and I got the same problem. I doesn't show anything on the screen. Both these computers had a GeForce2 MX 400 graphic card. I tried with another computer screen it didn't work - it was showing "signal out of range". So is the graphic card GeForce2 MX 400 too old for newer TFT-monitors? I tried with a third computer so I know that the monitors are working, and both monitors work fine with that computer.

  • Is the cooling fan on a 2004 graphics card really necessary?

    I have an old GeForce 6600 card in my computer, circa 2004. Recently the fan has started playing up and making loud irritating noises. I've tried oiling it with no luck. This is the second fan I've put on the card, the stock one broke ages ago. Is a card this old really likely to need a cooling fan or can I remove it altogether? It has a decent heatsink on the chip but there's not a lot of airflow in that part of the box. Edit: I should add that I seem to remember most mid range graphics cards at the time I bought that didn't have fans (pretty sure they had heatsinks only), which is why I'm wondering.

  • HDD not detected whenever first power on (detected at BIOS level)

    I am using Asus P8H61-M LX Motherboard with latest version of BIOS: 4401 One SATA-3 Western Digital Black Series 1.5TB is attached to SATA port 0 A Samsung 22x DVDRW SATA drive attached to SATA Port 1. ps/2 Logitech mouse and keyboard. CPU is i3 with DDR3 8Gb RAM. no other devices are installed. My problem is that when I turn on the computer, the WD HDD is not detected. ie cannot be booted. I have to press ctrl+alt+del in order to get it detected. I'd used the WD data lifeguard software to scan the HDD, the smart status is OK, the surface scan does not show any error at all. Where did I do wrong? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

  • Is it normal for a SAS drive to have a few bad blocks, or should I replace my drive ASAP?

    I have a drive—part of a RAID 1 mirror—that has two bad blocks. Adaptec Storage Manger e-mailed me when it detected the blocks. It shows 4 medium errors for that drive, but state is still “optimal”. This is my first time using Adaptec RAID controllers. I don’t know if an occasional bad block is normal, or if I should immediately replace that drive. Update: The drive failed later the same day! The disk subsystem is: Adaptec 6405 with ZMM (2) Seagate near-line SAS drives (ST31000424SS) The other drive hasn’t reported any bad blocks yet. I am running a consistency check.

    I'm comfused with the concept of 'Daily Duty Cycle'. For example if I have a scanner that the spec is: PPM (pages per minute): 90 and DDC (Daily Duty Cycle): 800. and I am interested in scanning ONLY 10hours continuously, what would it be the best choice: 90 * 60 * 10 = 54.000 or (800 / 24) * 10 = 333 It is very different results. what would it be the best option?

  • Upgrading HP DL185 G5 8LFF, is using a Dell J1520 4-Drop SATA Adapter possible?

    The HP DL185 G5 8LFF model supports 8 3.5" drives and 1 optical drive. However, instead of the optical drive, I'd like to have 2x 2.5" drives instead. The problem is that the PSU has no more SATA power cables (even though the motherboard has 4 additional SATA data ports). The PSU does have a free 10-pin connector and it looks like the J1520 cable from Dell would fit the bill. Link to cable description Does anyone have any experience using these cables? Are they safe? Any other ideas for adding the disks to the server if I don't use the cable? Thanks!

    I upgraded my PC to 4 GB RAM and I get only 3 GB. Windows 7 32-Bit consider that I've 4 GB RAM but didn't use more than 3 GB. Someone told me that MS Windows 32-bit doesn't support RAM larger than 3 GB. So please is there any way to make my OS "Windows 7 32-Bit" support more than 3 GB RAM ? *`Note: I can't move to 64-bit because I've many program doesn't work with a 64-bit OS. Edit:: I tried what Mr. Wonsungi advised me but whenever I check this option: Enable support for 4 GB of RAM I get the following error: 'Cannot access to the registry key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{E88DCCE0-11d1-A9F0-00AA0060FA31}.' There is no "CLSID" in my registry, I don't know why!.

    Hello, I would like to know what kind of electrical signals does a cpu send to a dynamic RAM when it wants to write one bit (a 1 or 0). Is it simply that cpu sends just a single electric pulse, and if that electric pulse's voltage is higher than a certain level, it charges the capacitor to a voltage level that is "1" and if it is at a lower voltage band, it charges capacitor to level that it is "0"?

  • Proper approach to debug PC startup problems (POST)

    My CPU was heating up to around 65 deg C and last time this had happened (about a year ago), I got thermal paste put between the CPU and heat sink and this managed to get it down to about 45 - 50 degrees. This time, I got some thermal paste and put it myself. However, my PC is not showing the POST display and not starting up. This is what happens LEDs light up HDDs spin Mouse is getting power All fans including the processor fan starts No display on monitor No diagnostic beep sounds (no sounds at all) What I have tried Removing everything including RAM, HDD, PCI cards, AGP card Boot up machine No changes from first state. What steps can I take to figure out where the problem lies? Note (might be important) When I removed the heat sink, the processor came out with it (it was stuck to it inspite of the processor latch on) Had to pry it separate with a screw-driver. Configuration Pentium 4, 2.8 Ghz with HT (very old, I know) Original Intel Mobo with onboard sound and graphics (GB series) 2x512 Mb DDR-RAM 2 SATA disks (320 Gigs / 250 gigs) DVD Writer Creative Sound Card Network card Any help would be appreciated.   • Configuring a monitor's contrast/brightess/colours/etc

    I have recently bought myself a new monitor, now I'd had my previous screen well over 5 years now so I'm looking at this one thinking the picture doesn't quite look right (not bad, just different). Rather than just wait until I'm used to the new picture I'd rather get it fine tuned, then get used to it - so I can reap the maximum benefit. So, can you please suggest reliable ways of configuring an LCD monitor's brightness/contrast/colour/etc to provide the optimum possibly quality image?

  • How long until the chirping stops or what can I do to make it stop?

    I know computers, I have been fixing them and building them for over a decade... but I don't know the exact electronics of them. My personal desktop PC is making an irregular, but constant, extremely high pitched chirping noise. I know this could be my hard drive, but I've heard that noise before and I believe this is a capacitor or part of the electronics. This noise is right at the edge of my hearing and I can feel it more than I can hear it. After a while, it starts to give me a headache and makes me physically sick. How long will this last? Is there anything I can do to fix it (short of replacing the entire motherboard)?
