  • Why is JavaScript not used for classical application development (compiled software)?

    During my years of web development with JavaScript, I come to the conclusion that it's an incredible powerful language, and you can do amazing things with it. It offers a rich set of features, like: Dynamic typing First-class functions Nested functions Closures Functions as methods Functions as Object constructors Prototype-based Objects-based (almost everything is an object) Regex Array and Object literals It seems to me that almost everything can be achieved with this kind of language, you can also emulate OO programming, since it provides great freedom and many different coding styles. With more software-oriented custom functionalities (I/O, FileSystem, Input devices, etc.) I think it will be great to develop applications with. Though, as far as I know, it's only used in web development or in existing softwares as a scripting language only. Only recently, maybe thanks to the V8 Engine, it's been used more for other kind of tasks (see node.js for example). Why until now it's only be relegated only to web development? What is keeping it away from software development?

  • Am I getting Scheme wrong?

    Inspired by the numerous posts about the importance of learning Lisp/Scheme I started to learn Scheme two days back, I am using the book "The little Schemer" and have completed half of it. But I still haven't learned anything new, the book teaches about recursion which I already understand and uses lambda (which I can think of a way to define a function in C). I still haven't got the concept of functional programming (please point to some example of functional compared to normal programming methods in C/C++ so I can get it). Am I learning in the wrong way? or is "The little Schemer" for a newbie in programming and I should look for some other books?

  • High paid non-finance programming roles? [closed]

    Besides finance (front-office/high frequency trading) developer roles, are there any other very well paid programming roles, specifically for C++ or Java? One particular industry I would find interesting is the energy industry? However, I completed an internship for one of the massive energy companies and their "IT department" was nothing more than Microsoft Access- they outsourced all the technical work to IBM and Accenture. EDIT: USD 110k+ Defense would sounds great except the fact I am not a US citizen :)

  • Deferent ways of solving problems in code.

    I now program in C# for a living but before that I programmed in python for 5 years. I have found that I write C# very that most examples I see on the web. Rather then writing things like: foreach (string bar in foo) { //bar has something doen to it here } I write code that looks like this. foo.ForEach( c => c.someActionhere() ) Or var result = foo.Select( c => { //Some code here to transform the item. }).ToList(); I think my using code like above came form my love of map and reduce in python while not exactly the same thing the concepts are close. Now it's time for my question. What concepts do you take and move with you from language to language. That allow you to solve a problem in a way that is not the normal accepted solution in that language?

  • Develop a small size software using C only for copying same data to multiple external drives simultaneously [on hold]

    I want to develop a software that can copy the same data to multiple external drives, simultaneously. For example, consider a file Movie and I have 3 external drives to copy it to, and I want to copy Movie to all these 3 drives(these drives can be flash storage or external hard-disk or pen-drive etc. but have one thing in common, i.e. they are all external drives) at the same time, means when I right-click on Movie there has to be 1 option saying Copy to All Drives. It's a sort of mini-project and I want to use C language only. For starting I would like it to work only on Windows OS. What are the requirements of developing this software (not the system requirements but what will I need to develop such a software, like editor,compiler etc.)? I know this type of software must have already been developed but I want to use C language and C Language only. So, is it possible to develop such a software?

  • Converting lib from other language to python and Rights issue

    If I take a program, and basically translate its source from some language to python, with some small changes, can I do a entirely my new lib or I have to make a "version" of the old one? would this be a copy of the first or a new lib based in the ideas of the first? OBS: Consider the original lib is using Apache License v2 Not sure if well explained, but I can't see for now how to make it more clear.

  • Dates set according to location not chosen language

    I recently installed Ubuntu 13.10 chose my location as Thailand/Bangkok, keyboard layout and language as South African English. Everything seems to be set up correctly except wherever a date is displayed it is displayed in Thai, instead of English. This is most noticeable in the clock indicator (see images included for what I mean). How can I change my dates to English (South African locale if possible).

  • What would you call the concept of CofeeScript or Sass to be?

    There is this rising trend with web development of making new pseudo languages to extend the functionality of JavaScript, CSS and HTML given that those are static and their metamorphosis or evolution is painfully slow due to the variety of browser providers. So I am currently having a concept dilema on how to categorize them for a book I was made to write by my employer as no one seems to have a name for these pseudo languages. A tiny list of them : JavaScript: LiveScript, Metalua, Uberscript, EmberScript. HTML: Razor, Java Scriptlets. CSS : LESS, Sass. I believe the concept of these pseudo languages and a language or an extension of a language is quite different. First these languages do not extend any functionality currently existing on HTML or CSS or JavaScript, they simply work around it. And also they do not "compile" to an intermediate language, they are merely 1-1 translated to something that only then can be compiled. What would you call them?

  • What do you miss when you have to use C instead of C++?

    This is not a question about which of the two languages is better than the other. I myself can't really decide. Pros and cons as always I guess. Also, if you feel you always would prefer C over C++, this poll is not for you :-). However, when I work in C projects I usually feel I'm missing a few language constructs more than others, which can be found in C++. For example, I usually miss (the obvious) classes, but seldomly templates (I always miss STL, but wouldn't call it a language construct). What do you miss when you have to use C instead of C++?

  • Why don't we store the syntax tree instead of the source code?

    We have a lot of programming languages. Every language is parsed and syntax checked before translated into code so an abstract syntax tree is built. We have this abstract syntax tree, why don't we store this syntax tree instead of the source code (or next to the source code)? By using an AST instead of the source code. Every programmer in a team can serialize this tree to any language, they want (with the appropriate context free grammar) and parse back to AST when they finished. So this would eliminate the debate about the coding style questions (where to put the { and }, where to put whitespace, indentation, etc.) What are the pros and cons of this approach?

An example would be to use a macro to get the minimum of two ints(but I was told that you shouldn't use macros as they are not type-safe) or using memsets to initialize arrays (but I was told that you shouldn't use memsets in C++).     I'm going on vacation to Paris, France for 10 days. Actually, it's my girlfriend's wish to go there but I'm not very interested in visiting, sightseeing, etc. Recently, I came up with an idea of trying to do something like programming tourism. :) I'd like to do something related to programming in a startup-like company. I do not want a salary or any kind of compensation. I want to overview process, social aspects, environment and "what it feels like" to development software in another country. I'm from Russia. I've been a software developer since 2003. I prefer C#4 but I'm ready to use anything Turing-complete. I have some MS certifications and am familiar with all .NETs since 1.1. Currently I'm finishing PhD in CS. I'm interested in multidimensional indexing and I can turn any piece of data and code to OLAP system. :) But it'd take too much time. What can I do? I have no more than one week. I want a totally complete project in a short amount of time. Implement some features in well-tested project Do a code review Debug memory, performance and concurrency issues Do unit testing So, about the questions: Is it legal? I'm ready to sign NDA if it's necessary. I'll have tourist visa. Is it possible? I'm really sure that bureaucratic companies with lots of HRs and PMs will not allow such experiments. But small companies can afford it. I'm ready to guarantee support on my code after leaving home :) P.S. I still havn't started learning French :) I hope it will not take too much time :) P.P.S. Yes, it's girlfriend-approved. What's in it for me? It's fun. It's fun to see new systems and people who created them. It's fun to complete meaningful things. Quickly. What's in it for them? Feature, debug, review or test. If my short-term colleagues will like this style of working I can invite them to make same trip into my company :) I think in Russia it's even more exciting :)

As a recently graduated Computer Systems Engineering I have gained some basic knowledge with programming using JAVA. I have realised 2 things, the first one is that I realy liked programming and the second is that I am not good at all. More specifically, I struggle on problem solving and when i face complex tasks I feel lost. Every day , I spend some quality time doing simple exercises in order to be more familiar with JAVA.
