• Disabling Keyboard Wakeup for Ubuntu 10.04 on Acer 1810TZ

  My Acer Aspire 1810TZ laptop suspends fine but wakes up on any slight key-press. I would like to disable this behaviour. • Gnome keyboard shortcuts dysfunctional after waking up from sleep

  Hello, I am using Ubuntu 9.10 on my Thinkpad T61. Very often after the system woke up from sleep, all the gnome shortcuts went dead (no effect when key combinations pressed). Things like "Alt+F4, Alt+TAB" are dead; things like Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V are OK; buttons such as volume up/down also OK; I tried to Google for answers but wasn't lucky enough. Any idea how to solve it? Thanks! If it's not preventable, can I at least restore them without restarting the session?

• Keyboard-Shortcut driffen Utility to move windows around on multiscreen setup

  I am looking for a utility to move windows around on a multiscreen (usualy dual screen) setup. So with a keybord shortcut (or mousclick) I would like to send a windows to another monitor. I am using this functionality a lot when I give presentations. I'll lookup something on my mainscreen and then send the window to the screen or beamer where others can see it. Its also useful when working or when I want to send a screen from my computer to the TV screen that is hooked up to the computer. I know two solutions for a) Windows b) Mac OS but none yet for Linux. I'll post my windows and Mac OS solutions as answer and would be interested in other opinions.

• USB-keyboard & mouse powered off in windows-7

  I have a problem with a pc where usb devices are not getting any power as soon as windows starts up (it works in preboot). This pc has no ps/2, so there is no chance for input, also not in secure boot mode. I "tidied up" using sysinternals autostart, so there is a chance I messed something up here, although I'm quite sure I only deleted some old printer drivers from autostart. I do not know how to reset this, I cant even log in because there is no input possible. I could use a linux live cd, but I don't know what to do there because there is no sysinternals from linux into a not running windows... To make things even worse, I have the windows installation completely encrypted with truecrypt, so I haven't even tried windows recovery cd yet. There is no loss of data since I can access the disc with a live-linux, I only want to use it again without resetting up everything. Any suggestions?

• Unauthorized computer use via keyboard or remote access?

  I’m suspecting my computer is being used when I’m not at home. This is happening either physically or remotely. My wireless switch is off. Is there any way possible to detect and/or monitor activity without purchasing software? My settings are being changed as well as passwords (Bios PW was changed and I cannot access Bios settings). I connect via the network cable. Is it possible for someone (in range) to connect to my laptop even if the wireless switch is off? This is a Dell Inspiron 1720 with the WLAN 1395 card. Here’s the kicker. When I try to download freeware for monitoring activity, I am not allowed to do this! ????

• Underlying Concept Behind Keyboard Mappings

  I am frustrated with key mapping issues. On my Linux box, if I type Home/End in Vim, then the cursor actually moves to the beginning/end of the line. On my Mac when I am on TextEdit, if I do Fn + Left or Fn + Right, it takes me to beginning/end of the line. But if I am on Vim on my Mac terminal, then the same key combinations don't work. Why? I see online all the different cryptic settings that I have to paste in .vimrc to make this work, but I can't find any explanation for those cryptic map, imap settings. What is the underlying issue here, and how can I fix it? Thanks!

• My monitor made a noise and is now dimmer - can I repair this myself?

  I have a Samsung SyncMaster T190 LCD monitor which I've had for about 5 years. It hissed slightly then went dim (readable but the top half of the screen is less bright). I'm pretty sure that after 5 years of service it's just got to the point where something's burned out, so my question is can I repair this myself, or should I just get a new monitor. I'm currently a student so self repair would be a better option if cost effective.

• Swapping Function (Fn) and Control (Ctrl) Keys on Lenovo ThinkPad W500

  I'd like to swap the Fn and Ctrl keys on my ThinkPad W500 (like many others! See: How can I switch the function and control keys on my laptop? and Intercepting the Fn key on laptops) Numerous folks indicate that Windows doesn't register the Fn key as a keypress but using Mihov ASCII Master 2.0, that gives the ASCII value of a keypress, I see the Fn key returning FF (perhaps FF in this case means 'not registered'). I also see that keys like Ctrl register with one ASCII code when pressed alone and another when pressed in combo with another key. Fn will only register when pressed alone, so Windows definitely isn't seeing the combo. This took a solution like AutoHotKey off the table. I ran KeyTweak (which shows you the hardware scan codes of a keypress and the Fn key registerd as 57443). Using this program I remapped Fn to the Ctrl key; this worked perfectly. However, I suspect that because of the issue in #1, the combo of, for example, Fn + C did not execute a copy. Short of retraining my pinky I'm actually considering removing the keyboard and resoldering the connections to swap those keys. I'd love to get some input as to the root technical issue(s) and possible solutions here.

  After running chkdsk C: /F /R and finding out that my hard disk has 24 KB in bad sectors (log is posted below), I decided to run Windows 7's System File Checker utility (sfc /scannow).   I'd like to swap the Fn and Ctrl keys on my ThinkPad W500 (like many others!). I wanted to comment on http://superuser.com/questions/35228/how-can-i-switch-the-function-and-control-keys-on-my-laptop and StackOverflow question 514781 (please Google it because I don't have enough rep to include 2 hyperlinks) but I don't have enough rep to do so to comment. Numerous folks (in both the above questions and on other Google searches) indicate that Windows doesn't register the Fn key as a keypress but using a tool that gives the ASCII value of a keypress (visit www mihov com / eng / am.html) I see the Fn key returning FF (perhaps FF in this case means 'not registered'). I also see that keys like Ctrl register with one ASCII code when pressed alone and another when pressed in combo with another key. Fn will only register when pressed alone, so Windows definitely isn't seeing the combo. This took a solution like AutoHotKey off the table. I ran KeyTweak (which shows you the hardware scan codes of a keypress and the Fn key registerd as 57443). Using this program I remapped Fn to the Ctrl key; this worked perfectly. However, I suspect that because of the issue in #1, the combo of, for example, Fn + C did not execute a copy. Short of retraining my pinky I'm actually considering removing the keyboard and resoldering the connections to swap those keys. I'd love to get some input as to the root technical issue(s) and possible solutions here. Thanks

• Linux RFID reader HID Device not matching driver

  Hello, I got a RFID reader (GigaTek PCR330A-00) that is meant to be recognized under linux/windows as a (Human Interface Device) keyboard/USB. I hate to say this but it is working as a charm under Win7 but not "really" under Linux. Under Debian-like distros (x/k/Ubuntu, Debian,..), or Gentoo, or... I just can't have the device working at all: the device scan well (it has its USB 5V, so it is happy/beeping/blinking) something happened in the dmesg, but no immediate screen display of the RFID Tag code as expected (and seen under win7) Support is claiming it is ok under RHEL or SLED "enterprises" distros... and I must admit I saw it working under a RHEL4... I tried stealing the driver but did not succeed having my reader working... My question is thus double: 1./ How can I hack the kernel to add support to my device (simply register PID/VID?) ? 2./ What is different at all in a "enterprise" proprietary distro? how can I re-use it? • Vanishing Windows Desktop Shortcut Keys

  The Situation Like you, I have many applications that I like to open. I've set up keyboard shortcuts for the most common, by placing a link on the desktop and setting its Shortcut Key property: This is all fine and dandy, most of the time. When I want to bring up the GIMP, I press Ctrl+Alt+G and the GIMP launches. Lovely. The Problem Sometimes--perhaps once a month per desktop shortcut--the shortcut key assignment simply vanishes. I press Ctrl+Alt+G and nothing happens, so I go check the shortcut and see that lo and behold: nothing is there. This happens regularly to all my shortcuts (not all at once). It doesn't matter what keys I assign, and there doesn't seem to be any correlation with particular applications being open or anything of that sort. This has happened on every Windows XP machine I've ever used with any regularity. Obviously what makes this issue particularly obnoxious is that it's not easily reproducible. I have searched long and hard for a solution for (or at least acknowledgement of) this problem, to no avail, so hopefully you guys know something that I don't. I did find this question, where the answers are all basically "use a third-party app", but as far as I could tell that was a slightly different issue, related to Explorer being busy. If the solution for this turns out to be the same, fine, but I'd prefer a native fix if at all possible. Note: I've tagged this with Windows in general because I seem to remember it happening on Windows 7 as well as XP, but I rarely notice it because I use the start-menu search in preference to desktop shortcuts.

• Coming from Win XP to 7 and having new accessibility software problems

  I just switched from Windows XP Pro SP3 (32bit) to Windows 7 Ultimate (32bit) on a new PC. Now, both the new onscreen keyboard and a utility for sending mouse clicks are being problematic. The problem with 7's OSK is that some things I type only work intermittently or just dodgily. Like Alt+Tab with multiple Tabs, other Alt/Ctrl/Shift/Win key combinations, and the context menu key. Sometimes apps will not take focus for input at all. I use the OSK it in 'hover' mode, on 0,5 seconds. The clicking tool is Point-N-Click, which sends clicks when I dwell anywhere for 1.25 seconds with the mouse pointer. http://www.polital.com/pnc/ The problem with it is that sometimes it fails to click. Most often this happens in some of the control panel sections, on the taskbar, and when UAC pops up. It seems to occur in conjunction with OSK usage a bit too, I think. I'm using an Administrator account. DEP and UAC settings are default. What can I do to fix or work around either of these problems? I'm disabled so this really is killing usability.

• How can I make my Super keys (Windows Key) behave more like Ctrl/Alt/Shift in Linux

  After using the Ctrl + "arrow keys" for 13 years to switch virtual desktops in X windows, I've been convinced recently to change to using the Super keys instead (the windows key and the context menu key, which I've remapped). This all works fine for the most part. However, something is still picking up the key events that these keys are sending as if they are a normal alphanumeric like key. For example, I first noticed this in Google Docs spreadsheet that if I press the windows key alone over top of a cell, that it starts editing that cell. It doesn't insert anything, it just sends a key event that Firefox sees and starts editing the cell. This caused problems on a collaborative document I was working on as the way Google docs works, it led to me accidentally erasing the data in a few fields before I realised what was going on. I like using the super keys, but I want them to behave more like a Ctrl or Alt key does in that its a modifier key and doesn't send anything until a second key is pressed. My setup is the following: Ubuntu 10.10 XFCE 4 Microsoft Natural Ergo 4000 keyboard (with the logo scratched out) The following is my .Xmodmap file: remove Lock = Caps_Lock keycode 66 = Escape ! • How do you repair an "input/output error" in an NTFS partition?

  I replaced a buggy Windows Vista installation with Ubuntu. All works fine except that the mais harddrive where I had all my files are now inaccessible. Here is the eror message I get: Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 13: ntfs_attr_pread_i: ntfs_pread failed: Input/output error Failed to read NTFS $Bitmap: Input/output error NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very important! If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g. /dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation for more details Is it necessarily a hardware problem? If not, is there a way to repair the HD from Ubuntu?

• How can I have a Bluetooth Keyboard Auto-Connect at Startup?

  I have a bluetooth keyboard for my HTPC. I pair it with my computer via bluetooth, and it works fine. However, when I turn off the keyboard or my computer, it has to connect again (which requires me entering a passcode on the computer and keyboard) when I turn them back on. I've looked through many forums and through that I have found that I'm missing some seemingly vital bluetooth files: /etc/default/bluetooth /etc/init.d/bluetooth /etc/bluetooth/hcid.conf In the instructions that I've found online so far, I must change certain lines in any of these files. I am unable to, since they do not exist. Am I missing a dependency or something? I've also tried installing Blueman but that didn't help at all. I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick). • Korean keyboard handling is different on Win 7 Ultimate K then on a regular Win 7

  Hi, I have a Win32 application which hosts a windowless flash activeX. When I'm trying to enter Korean keyboard input on a regular Win machine (after adding Korean support), everything works fine. However, when I trying the same thing on a "real" Korean windows (Win 7 Ultimate K), the text comes out strangely. I.e., pressing the "z" button would yield "1K". Any ideas? Thanks in advace
