  • Why do fonts sometimes look "fat" on Mac OS X?

    Sometimes when resuming from suspend, the fonts in Mac OS X look "fatter" than normal. Unfortunately right now I can't get my Macbook Pro to exhibit the "normal" behavior for comparison, it has been abnormal yesterday and today. If I can get screenshots of what I think is 'normal', I'll add them. "Fixing" this has been random. I use an external monitor, and sometimes unplugging it and plugging back in, or even turning it off and back on has worked. Sometimes with the display attached (or not) detecting displays works. Sometimes logging out or rebooting entirely is what it takes. Displays used: Macbook Pro 15" built-in display Dell 27" LCD (2009 model) Software where I see this happen, at least most noticably: Firefox (screenshots below) iTerm Things MacIrssi (screenshots below) I am using Mac OS X 10.5.8.   • Windows no longer display with proprietary ATI Catalyst drivers

    I recently started having an issue that opening any application would would show nothing on screen. At the time I noticed it I assumed it was an incompatibility between the new 14 update so reinstalled the old 13.10 iso I used originally. I have now tried a range of ATI drivers including the latest and the exact file I installed the first time with the same results. I can only assume then that it is one of the updates applied at some point, but have no idea which one or how I would go about rolling these back or getting earlier versions of packages. Is anyone else getting this issue? The system has 2 ati 6850s installed, not in crossfire. The open source drivers work fine but I need the ATI ones for cgminer to work.

  • How display path ball will bounce?

    I'm trying to figure out a way to show the path a ball will travel, so that the player can line up a shot before they fire the ball. I can't think of a way to calculate this path in advance and show it to the player, especially if it involves collision detection. At first I thought I would run the game at a super high speed for one update, plot the path with some dotted lines where the ball bounced, and then in the next frame hide the 'tracer' ball. This seems to have two issues - Calculating collision detection without actually updating the frames and collision detection getting less reliable at high speeds. If they were straight lines I think I could figure this out in a while loop, but trying to take into account the speed of the ball, the curve of the path, the reflecting from other objects..it all seems a bit much. I'm not looking for any code and this isn't a platform specific question, more just help trying to figure out conceptually how this would work. Can this be done? Are there techniques to achieve this?

  • Cannot set video resolution above 640x480 after installing Windows XP SP2

    I've installed Windows XP SP2 on a computer (there was not SP at all). Now the display settings are set back to 640x480 and 4 bits colors. And I can't change it, it's the only option in Settings tab of the Display dialog of Windows. The screen look awful now, how can I solve this problem? UPDATE: Seems to be a problem with the video driver (thanks @Karan and @Hennes).   • Advantages of a 130W vs 90W ac adapter?

    I purchased a Lenovo T420S laptop with a 90W/20V AC adapter P/N 42t4426 through my IT department. Subsequently, I ordered a replacement adapter and received a 135W/20V AC adapter P/N 45N0054. The 135W version is about twice as big and heavy as the 90W version. Is there an advantage to the 135W version like faster battery recharging? Are there any negative effects (other than weight), like reduced battery life?

  • Power scheme faulty

    Hi, I use a laptop. When I take the power cable out to run on batteries, the screen darkens, as it is no longer so bright, to save on battery power. When I put the power cable back in, the screen brightens back to it's original brightness. However, I have since replaced the power cable, and the screen remains darkened.     A friend of mine has purchased a new laptop (Toshiba) with Windows 7 installed and has also purchased Outlook 2007 and atttmped to install it - the install worked ok, but I think he may have selected Exchange server when installing the first time - now it will not start, displaying message like "Your Microsoft Exchange Server is unavailable " Outlook 2007 should have been configued for Pop3 as he has a hotmail account, but Outlook will not load "offline" and despite me de-installing, re-installing, running repair, I cannot get it to load to a point where I can add a new email account. If any one has any ideas on this, I would apprecaite the help Thanks, Bob

It reports these numbers: GPU: 74C Temp1 (ACPI): 75C Temp2 (ACPI): 95C Core 0: 89C Core 1: 89C These seem awfully high to me, should I be concerned? This is an HP EliteBook 8730w with Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Extreme CPU X9100 @ 3.06GHz and nVidia Quadro FX 3700M.

  • Display launcher over a GNOME panel (instead of under)

    I've set up my desktop so that I have a classic style gnome-panel at the bottom to show my active applications with a main menu button on the side. The problem is that the panel stretches across the whole width of the screen and over the launcher, making it difficult to access the icons at the bottom. I could untick the expand option in the panel's properties, but there's no way to resize it so it takes up the rest of the right part of the screen, which is what I want. And if enough applications are open it stretches all the way anyway. I don't want to auto-hide it either. What I'd like to do is make the launcher go over the top of the panel so I can fully access both the launcher and the panel at the same time. If it's possible, how do I do this?

    I read that hardware generally used on PC is not optimized for running Linux. That is the reason the machine emits large amount of heat and doesn't give the battery back up , that we will get while working on windows. ~REF Does it also mean more wear and tear of the hardware (when using linux as compared when using windows ) ? Note : I have personally experienced large heat emission while working with Fedora 16 and Ubuntu 11.xx on my laptop.
