• Why does VNC eat certain characters?

  I often use VNC to connect to my desktop upstairs using a laptop downstairs over my home network. I tunnel the VNC connection via SSH. The problem I keep running into is that I'll attempt to type a ! or a : or even a captial A and it will come across the wire as a 1, ;, or a respectively. Is this something I can fix? It's really REALLY annoying while one is programming to have to pop open character map and find a colon and copy/paste it in each time. Running Ubuntu 10.04 upstairs, Linux Mint 10 downstairs.

  I have a network that was setup for multicast traffic IN Machine A there is a server application generating multi-cast traffic. I have also different clients subscribing to that mulicast traffic -some client are in the same machine A -other clients are in machine B,C,D # Address I am using IP : 239.193.0.21 PORT: 20401 I don't know why but the client in machine A , even if they join the group, don't receive any data while (and this is the funny part) machine B,C and D receive everything. Checking with Wirshark I can see that the UDP traffic flow is there in Machine A. I am using LInux/Red-Hat Enterprise 6.2 What should I look at? Any setting in the os? Firewall or what?

• What is the best way to back up dedicated web server? (Amanda versus Rsync)

  Hello everyone, I am trying to establish valid back ups for my web server. It is a linux box on CentOS. I have asked around and "rsync" was suggested by some of the server fault community. However, my coworker at work says that this is really only moving over the physical files and isn't really a usable "snapshot." He suggested using "amanda" and that this did full server snapshots that are more what I am accustomed to. I know at my company we have virtual machines that we take snapshots of and we can restore everything back to just as they were with little effort and little downtime. Is this possible with rsync? Or would I need to create a new server and then migrate the files back and do various configurations? I think I prefer being able to just reset everything to a point in time. Forgive my ignorance, Back ups are something that I have never really had to worry about before.

• apt - Remove not configured package

  I have a Linux-Mint Debian Edition System. When I install sendmail I get an infinite loop. Reading configuration from /etc/mail/sendmail.conf. Validating configuration. Creating /etc/mail/databases... Reading configuration from /etc/mail/sendmail.conf. Validating configuration. Creating /etc/mail/databases... When I try dpkg --configure -a it is the same. Now I want to simple remove sendmail from the installation queue - but I can't simply do that, because apt-get always wants to configure sendmail first. Is there a way to force apt-get to remove sendmail or set it to "configured" - even though the package is not properly configured?

• Is it worth moving from Microsoft tech to Linux, NodeJS & other open source frameworks to save money for a start-up?

  I am currently getting involved in a startup, I am the only developer involved at the moment, and the other guys are leaving all the tech decisions up to me at the moment. For my day job I work at a software house that uses Microsoft tech on a day to day basis, we utilise .NET, SqlServer, Windows Server etc. However, I realise that as a startup we need to keep costs down, and after having a brief look at the cost of hosting for Windows I was shocked to see some of the prices for a dedicated server. The cheapest I found was £100 a month. Also if the business needs to scale in the future and we end up needing multiple servers, we could end up shelling out £10's of £000's a year in SQL Server / Windows Server licenses etc. I then had a quick look at the price of Linux hosting for a dedicated server and saw the price was waaaaaay lower than windows hosting. One place was offering a machine with 2 cores for less than £20 a month. This got me thinking maybe the way to go is open source on Linux. As I write a lot of Javascript at work (I'm working on a single page backbone app at the moment), I thought maybe NodeJS and a web framework like Express would be cool to use. I then thought that instead of using SQL why not use an open source NoSQL database like MongoDB, which has great support on NodeJS? My only concern is that some of the work the application is going to do is going to be dynamically building images and various other image related stuff, i.e. stuff that is quite CPU heavy - so I'm thinking of maybe writing anything CPU heavy in C++ and consuming it as a module in Node. That's the background - but basically is Linux a good match for: Hosting a NodeJS/Express site? Compiling C++ node modules? Using a NoSQL DB like MongoDB? And is it a good idea to move to these unfamiliar technologies to save money?

• Using iptables to block ALL outgoing traffic from one NIC?

  Hi, I must pretty bad at Googling as this seems like a very basic question but I can't seem to find the answer anywhere... and man iptables is a very long read! I have two NICs - eth0 and eth1 - on a linux box and I want to block ALL outbound traffic (TCP and UDP across all ports) from one of the NICs, so that no traffic makes its way back up to the router. What is the command for this? I have only seen examples with specific ports. Thanks in advance.

• What is stable as Ubuntu in kernel space, but also cutting-edge as Fedora in user land?

  I am a long time Fedora user (since Fedora 6). Previously I have used Gentoo (for 2 years) and Slackware (for 5 years). The thing I liked about Fedora is frequency of package updates + great community. But lately I have noticed that Fedora is becoming too cutting-edge, nay, bleeding-edge. They changed the DNS client to be strict, without any warning, which broke some of their own packages for two Fedora releases. More critically, their LVM modules are not compatible across Fedora 12, 13, 14 (sometimes). Ubuntu is nicely polished but seems too stable for my liking. Some of the user-space applications are two major version numbers behind (even in testing or unstable or whatever they call it). Is there any Linux distro that has the stability of Ubuntu in kernel space and the bleeding edge in applications (especially harmless applications like, say, Stellarium)?

  i want to write program, in windows, which will write a .sh file, then connect to a linux machine via cygwin and ssh, and execute that .sh file. I've had to use dos2unix to convert .sh files that I created in windows to run under linux. Obviously if I am executing a script with ssh it will have to be linux formatted to work. so I need to know how to create a linux appropriate .sh file using c or openoffice basic or vBA. thanks!

• Linux bcm43224 wifi adapter slows down a couple minutes after boot

  I just installed Ubuntu on my mid 2012 MacBook Air. Everything worked out of the box, but the wifi is showing some weird behavior. When I first login it's really fast, loading google.com is near instant, and browsing in general feels at least as smooth as it did on Mac OS. However, after a couple minutes the connection slows down dramatically, sometimes it takes over 5s to load google.com, a simple reboot fixes the problem for another couple minutes. Specs: Wifi: 02:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM43224 802.11a/b/g/n (rev 01) Driver: open-source brcmsmac driver Kernel: Linux wega 3.8.0-21-generic #32-Ubuntu SMP Tue May 14 22:16:46 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux Distro: Ubuntu 13.04 (uptodate) I tried a number of things, none of which actually helped Use proprietary sta driver from broadcom Installed firmware into /lib/firmware/brcms (which, as far as I can tell from logs, does not get loaded at all) Switch router to only use 2.4 OR 5 GHz Set router to only use a OR g OR n Set router to use AES encryption only Turned off power management on the adapter Set regulatory region to the correct value (NL) on both router and laptop Disable ipv6 Nothing seems to help, the slowdown always occurs. Today, I wanted to perform hardware-maintenance on the secondary node (node04), so I stopped the heartbeat service before shutting it down. Then, the primary node (node03) received a shutdown notice from the secondary node (node04). What just happened here??? Heartbeat on node04 stopped and told node03, which was the active node at the time. Somehow, node03 decided to start the cluster processes that were already running. (For the processes that are not critical, I always return a 0 from the startupscript so it does not stops the entire cluster when a non-essential part fails.) When starting ActiveMQ, it returns status 1 because it is already running. This fails the node and shuts everything down. As heartbeat is not running on the secondary node, it cannot failover to there. When I tried to run ha_takeover to restart the resources, absolutely nothing happened. Only after I restarted heartbeat on the primary node the resources could be started (after a delay of 2 minutes). These are my questions: Why does heartbeat on the primary node try to start the cluster processes again? Why did ha_takeover not work? What can I do to prevent this from happening?   I am trying to run a headless test for a web application using WebDriver on Mac OS X 10.6.3. My plan is to run firefox-x11 with Xvfb, but WebDriver is unable to launch firefox-x11.   I have a macbook but sometimes I run Windows in vmware to program in Visual Studio. I have a swedish keyboard, to get the curly brace '{' I press alt(=option)+shift+8 in mac, but to get the same character in vmware/windows I should press alt+7. Obviously, I would like to have the same keyboard layout in mac and windows, how can I make this happen? I have been recommended to use autohotkey on Windows, but I have a problem mapping AltGr shift 8 to a character (i.e. <^!+8:{ does not work) (I state the question in this forum because I think that only programmers can answer it, we are the only ones that use the characters []{} )

  Hi I'm writing a bash script which needs to convert a string to lowercase. The problem is I'm doing it on a mac so 'tr' is not available. How can I go about doing this on a mac? The problem I'm trying to tackle is that my script needs to recognize an if an extension is a .gif or a .jpg - and I don't want to have to check for .jpeg, .jPeg, .JPEG, .JPeg, etc etc etc... if there's a smarter way of doing this than just converting to lowercase and testing for gif, jpg and jpeg, i'm all ears :)

• Silverlight clipping a string on mac

  hello, I am facing a very strange issue in my silverlight app on all browsers on mac but it is working perfectly in all windows browsers. in my silverlight app there is a scenario in which I create a very long text string and then pass it to a wcf service which then saves the string in a text file server. the issue is that in mac every time string is clipped after about same location. but it is working perfectly fine in all browsers on windows. btw in silverlight I am using string builder to build the string.
