  • Bandwidth heavy site... use co-location?

    I'm working on a web site that is likely to be very bandwidth-heavy. A major feature of the site when in active use can pull up to 1Mbps for a single session. Luckily, once users get over the new toy factor, the use of this feature will probably be 1-5% or less (probably much less) of session time. However, new users are likely to play with this feature a good bit, especially at launch. I'm very concerned about bandwidth use. This is more or less a niche market, so I won't ever be needing to scale to crazy levels like YouTube. However, it is entirely possible for it to be a couple terabytes/month. Is co-location my best option? What cheap bandwidth services (colocation/hosted/cloud/whatever) are out there?

    Is there a debian/ubuntu policy on softlinking things to another location in opt once they're installed properly in usr/share or usr/lib? Here's a simple example: Packaging up dnsenum. It's a REALLY simple package (4 files). A perl script, two wordlists, and a readme. So from what I gather: The wordlists should go in usr/share/dnsenum/* The perl script itself would go in usr/lib/dnsenum/ The readme would go in usr/share/doc/dnsenum/ Add a wrapper bash script that goes in bin and just passes arguments to dnsenum.pl. The question is this: If there are various tools that provide wordlists or some other shared resource, is there a policy on linking all the wordlists from different packages in to /opt/wordlists/ ? It seems like the "right" thing to do respecting the directory structure while still making things convenient.

  • No matter what, I can't get this stupid progress bar to update from a thread!

    I have a Windows app written in C (using gcc/MinGW) that works pretty well except for a few UI problems. One, I simply cannot get the progress bar to update from a thread. In fact, I probably can't get ANY UI stuff to update. Basically, I have a spawned thread that does some processing, and from that thread I attempt to update the progress bar in the main thread. I tried this by using PostMessage() to the main hwnd, but no luck even though I can do other things like open message boxes. However, it's unclear whether the message box is getting called within the thread or on the main thread. Note: I have not yet implemented the LINE1. I've just planned to do in that way. My question is, Is this a good practice to calculate the Current Location, at the time the Maps app is called? [self getCurrentLocation] will retrun the Current Location before openURL gets called? I have to determine the Current Location well before opening the Maps app?   • What can cause the language bar to disappear in a win32 application?

    When I run my Win32 application the Windows language bar (which is visible in all other applications) disappears after about 5 seconds. It reappears if I quit my application or alt-tab to a different application. If I alt-tab back into my application, it disappears again after five seconds. The switch key doesn't work either. It seems as if the system somehow has concluded that my application doesn't "support" the language bar. Is there something I need to do to for the language bar to be enabled? Or something I shouldn't be doing that can cause it to disappear? The application has a single custom window (where I draw DirectX graphics). I've looked through the arguments to CreateWindow and RegisterClass as well as the window messages that I handle (instead of passing to DefWindowProc) but nothing seems to be directly related to the language bar. I've only tested this on Windows 7.

  • Dreaded iframe horizontal scroll bar can't be removed in IE?

    I have an iframe. The content is wider than the width I am setting so the iframe gets a horizontal scroll bar. I can't increase the width of the iframe so I want to just remove the scroll bar. I tried setting the scroll property to "no" but that kills both scroll bars and I want the vertical one. I tried setting overflow-x to "hidden" and that killed the horizontal scroll bar in ff but not in IE. sad for me.

    Ever since FireFox 4, page tabs have been moved to the top of the window. This gets pretty irritating when surfing the net through a remote desktop session. Often when I want to switch tabs, if I accidentally move my mouse a little to much to the top, I get the remote desktop connection bar blocking the tabs instead, then I'd have to wait a few frustrating seconds before it disappears again. So, are there any methods to shrink or shorten the remote desktop connection bar or delay the appearance of it?

    I have Google Chrome installed on Ubuntu and I have made a number of folders of bookmarks placed within my bookmark bar. The problem is that some of the folder's names are abbreviated like "Ru---" for "Ruby". This is kind of annoying when I have more than one folder that starts with "Ru". Also, my bookmark bar is not completely full, so there is plenty of space for these names to show. Anyone know how to fix this?

If it's possible to automatically manage jump lists in such a way as to make this possible, I'd be delighted. I recently did an update (at some late hours) and i can no longer use right side of the touchpad to scroll. Can anyone tell me how to get the same function as I had in Windows and Ubuntu 11.10 ?   • Lubuntu fails plug and play such as scanners; default file location on Gnumeric

    I am new to Lubuntu and I have been giving it a good try but confess I am now tempted to go back to Windows. However, I am open to persuasion if I can get a simple answer to two questions. The first is a hardware question issue. It seems from the forum that many users like me cannot use plug and play hardware such as scanners. Are we doing anything wrong or does Lubuntu (mine is 13.04) not support plug and play or scanners? I have read lots of previous answers about scanners but they all seem to involve re-writing lines of instructions to various areas of the system - not something an amateur like me can do with ease. Mine is a Packard Belle Diamond 1200 plus and apparently it should work fine on Lubuntu - but can I even get it recognised, let alone working - No? Secondly is there an easy way in Gnumeric to set the default file location so that I don't have to trawl through my whole tree to locate a file I want to open? Thanks to anybody who can get me stay with Lubuntu with their wisdom.
