• How to get current datetime on windows command line, in a suitable format for using in a filename?

  What's a windows command line statement(s) I can use to get the current datetime in a format that I can put into a filename? I want to have a .bat file that zips up a directory into an archive with the current date & time as part of the name, eg "Code_2008-10-14_2257.zip". Is there any easy way I can do this, independent of the regional settings of the machine? I don't really mind about the date format, ideally it'd be yyyy-mm-dd but anything simple is fine. So far I've got this, which on my machine gives me "Tue_10_14_2008_230050_91" rem Get the datetime in a format that can go in a filename. set _my_datetime=%date%_%time% set _my_datetime=%_my_datetime: =_% set _my_datetime=%_my_datetime::=% set _my_datetime=%_my_datetime:/=_% set _my_datetime=%_my_datetime:.=_% rem now use the timestamp by in a new zip file name "d:\Program Files\7-Zip\7z.exe" a -r Code_%_my_datetime%.zip Code I can live with this but it seems a bit clunky. Ideally it'd be briefer and have the format mentioned earlier. I'm using Windows Server 2003 and Win XP Pro. I don't want to install additional utilities to achieve this (although I realise there are some that will do nice date formatting).

• Best XML format for log events in terms of tool support for data mining and visualization?

  We want to be able to create log files from our Java application which is suited for later processing by tools to help investigate bugs and gather performance statistics. Currently we use the traditional "log stuff which may or may not be flattened into text form and appended to a log file", but this works the best for small amounts of information read by a human. After careful consideration the best bet has been to store the log events as XML snippets in text files (which is then treated like any other log file), and then download them to the machine with the appropriate tool for post processing. I'd like to use as widely supported an XML format as possible, and right now I am in the "research-then-make-decision" phase. I'd appreciate any help both in terms of XML format and tools and I'd be happy to write glue code to get what I need. What I've found so far: log4j XML format: Supported by chainsaw and Vigilog. Lilith XML format: Supported by Lilith Uninvestigated tools: Microsoft Log Parser: Apparently supports XML. OS X log viewer: plus there is a lot of tools on http://www.loganalysis.org/sections/parsing/generic-log-parsers/ Any suggestions?

• What algorithm should i follow to retrieve data in the prescribed format?

  I have to retrieve data from a database in which tables are consisting of fields like "ttc, rm, atc and lta" namely. Actually these values are stored on daily basis with a 15 min interval like From_time to_time ttc rm atc lta 00:00 00:15 45 10 35 25, 00:15 00:30 35 10 25 25 and so on .. These values are stored for every day of every month and i want it to be previewed in the prescribed format then what algorithm should i follow. I am confused about how to do comparisons for a format like below mentioned. And the confusing part is any of the values "ttc", "rm", "atc", "lta" can be same for any particular interval. So what algorithm should i follow for such comparisons.   I have a 320 GB HDD, which actually only has an 80 GB NTFS format partition which was being used by a Windows 7 system ... I want to create a VMDK format clone of this partition, so that I can use it with VMware .. However, tradition VMDK creation programs normally make a VMDK for an entire disk, whereas I just want to make a VMDK for the one 80 GB partition ... This is important because the other 240 GB on the physical source HDD is just unallocated area, and including that in a VMDK file is just a plain waste of space .. So how to make a VMDK file for a specific partition ? Any tool available for this ?

My script goes like this. diskpart /s "abc.txt" where abc.txt is: sel disk 1 create part primary format FS=NTFS label=label2 quick compress My Problem here is I want to 'loop' the commands in abc.txt for the number of disks that exists. But I cannot send an argument like %1 to abc.txt file as it is a .txt file. and my diskpart /s can only take a .txt file as an argument. how to overcome this... could anybody please help?

• How can I mount .IMG floppy disk images which are not 1.44MB or any other floppy format?

  I have several .IMG files, but they are different sizes which do not comform to any floppy disk format, i.e. not 1.44MB, 720K, 2.88MB... these .IMG files are like 420K, 832K, etc. Additional info: Winimage, rar, Magic ISO... none of these worked. The files I want to download are located in www.vetusware.com under DBMSOracle6. They are 2 files in rar format, but when I extract the rar's, I get forty-two .IMG files with varied sizes, not 1.44MB, etc. If anyone could please give it a try and succeed in mounting or reading the extractd IMG files, I would appreciate you letting me know how you achieved it, I really need this legacy Oracle 6/DOS version!.. • Linux : How to convert media files to DVD format and burn?

  I have a load of media files on my PC, mostly AVI/MKV and some mpegs. On windows, I would use ConvertXToDVD to convert these to DVD format, and to burn to disc. That application also lets you save a bit of space on the DVD to put the original file in its AVI format on as well. How can I do this on linux? What are the alternatives to this Windows application? I could try to run ConvertXtoDVD under wine but I would prefer to find a native linux solution Thanks in advance!

• VLC Crash when playing MKV files in Windows 7

  I'm not sure if the mkv file is corrupted, but when it is opened with VLC player, VLC loads up and displays nothing. Can't even close VLC after that. And also, VLC is running with 50% of the CPU. I have to use End Process to kill it. How do I know if the file is corrupted?   I need to be able to display a money field as $XX,XXX.XX, but without converting to varchar using total_eval = '$' + CONVERT(varchar(19),total_eval.opvValueMoney,1) My project uses sorting of the information after I pull this to sort the column and it doesn't sort correctly when the column is a varchar. • Is there a way to mark up code to tell ReSharper not to format it?

  I quite often use the ReSharper "Clean Up Code" command to format my code to our coding style before checking it into source control. This works well in general, but some bits of code are better formatted manually (eg. because of the indenting rules in ReSharper, things like chained linq methods or multi-line ternary operators have a strange indent that pushes them way to the right). Is there any way to mark up parts of a file to tell ReSharper not to format that area? I'm hoping for some kind of markup similar to how ReSharper suppresses other warnings/features. If not, is there some way of changing a combination of settings to get ReSharper to format the indenting correctly? EDIT: I have found this post from the ReSharper forums that says that generated code sections (as defined in the ReSharper options page) are ignored in code cleanup. Having tried it though, it doesn't seem to get ignored.

• Windows Vista, Default Programs API, file format associations, and (un)installers - explosive mix!

  My application is a rather well behaved Windows citizen, so when I ported it to Windows Vista/7 I replaced my custom file format association code with support for the Default Programs API. However I ran into a problem when trying to make uninstaller for my application - there seems to be no way to remove file format associations via Default Programs API. I tried to call IApplicationAssociationRegistration::ClearUserAssociations but it actually removes all associations, including the ones for other applications - completely restoring default state of the OS (which is of course unacceptable). I tried to call IApplicationAssociationRegistration::SetAppAsDefault to return file format associations to the previous "owner" - but it does not help, because my application handles many unique file formats which the OS does not support and there is no previous "owners". And Windows does not allow to pass empty strings to SetAppAsDefault... So what do I do? Any good solutions?

  In our web.config I am using the following tag to determine the interface language of an ASP.NET website. <globalization enableClientBasedCulture="true" culture="auto:en-GB" uiCulture="auto:en"/> This works as expected: Client wo request a specific localisation get it, everybody else is happily looking at the en-GB settings. Due to company policy I need to change the date format to the ISO 8601 standard format (YYYY-MM-DD) for everybody. Is this possible at a central place in the web.config or do I need to change this manually in every instance? Addition: Would it be possible to do get this date format when restricting the interface to english? Thanks! =)

  How does Windows decide which icon format to display when showing an exe's icon in Windows Explorer? Problem: When we look at our icon file and exe with embedded icon file in various Windows Explorer file views, the icon file is displayed in a higher quality mode than the icon displayed for our executable even though the icon in our executable contains the exact same icon. Our exe's icon has jaggier edges which leads me to believe that Windows Explorer may be trying to upsize a lower resolution icon rather than picking an icon appropriate for the actual display size. In a multi-format icon file, is there a specific order we should use for positioning each icon format? For example, we have an icon file with icons in the following formats: - 16x16 - 32x32 - 48x48 - 64x64 - 128x128 - 256x256 We are testing the appearance of our exe's icon using Windows Explorer under Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7. Any suggestions appreciated.

• Anyone have an XSL to convert Boost.Test XML logs to a presentable format?

  I have some C++ projects running through cruisecontrol.net. As a part of the build process, we compile and run Boost.Test unit test suites. I have these configured to dump XML log files. While the format is similar to JUnit/NUnit, it's not quite the same (and lacks some information), so cruisecontrol.net is unable to pick them up. I am wondering if anyone has created (or knows of) an existing XSL transform that will convert Boost.Test results to JUnit/NUnit format, or alternatively, directly to a presentable (html) format.   Hello, I am working on a decentralized Erlang application. I am currently working on a single PC and creating multiple nodes by initializing erl with the -sname flag. When I spawn a process using spawn/4 on its home node, I can see output generated by calls io:format/2 within that process in its home erl instance. When I spawn a process remotely by using spawn/4 in combination with register_name, output of io:format/2 is sometimes redirected back to the erl instance where the remote spawn/4 call was made, and sometimes remains completely invisible. Similarly, when I use rpc:call/4, output of io:format/2 calls is redirected back to the erl instance where the `rpc:call/4' call is made. How do you get a process to emit debugging output back to its parent erl instance?

• Cucumber - How configure it to use "--format pretty" as default?

  I'm starting learning rails, and having some troubles on configure cucumber to run my bdd tests. What I want is run cucumber features and this translate to cucumber features --format pretty I tried to do this editing the config/cucumber.yml file (on a rails project). Edited the line: default: <%= std_opts % features resulting on: default: <%= std_opts % --format pretty features But it make some erros happen: Using the default profile... All but one formatter must use --out, only one can print to each stream (or STDOUT) (RuntimeError) What I can do to make this option "--format pretty" default? Also, is there any other good option to put as default to make result more clear? Thank you.
