• C# / Visual Studio: production and test code placement

  Hi, In JavaLand, I'm used to creating projects that contain both production and test code. I like this practice because it simplifies testing of internal code without artificially exposing the internals in a project's published API. So far, in my experiences with C# / Visual Studio / ReSharper / NUnit, I've created separate projects (i.e., separate DLLs) for production and test code. Is this the idiom, or am I off base? If this idiomatically correct, what's the right way to deal with exposing classes and methods for test purposes? Thanks, -Patrick

• Integration Testing an Entire *Existing* Application (w/ automatic execution of test suite)

  Hi there, I have just joined a team working on an existing Java web app. I have been tasked with creating an automated integration test suite that should run when developers commit to our continuous integration server (TeamCity), which automatically deploys to our staging server - so really the tests will be run against our staging web app server. I have read a lot of stuff about automated integration testing with frameworks like Watir, Selenium and RWebSpec. I have created tests in all of these and while I prefer Watir, I am open to anything. The thing that hasn't become clear to me is how to create an entire test suite for an application, and how to have that suite execute in it's entirety upon execution of some script. I can happily create individual tests of varying complexity, but there is a gap in my knowledge about how to tie everything together into something useful. Does anyone have any advice on how to create a full test suite and have it execute automatically? Thanks!

  Say I do var s = $('#something'); and next I want to test if jQuery found #something, i.e. I want to test if s is empty. I could use my trusty isempty() on it: function isempty(o) { for ( var i in o ) return false; return true; } Or since jQuery objects are arrays, I suppose I could test s.length. But neither seem quite in the idiom of jQuery, not very jQueryesque. What do you suggest?

I want to use that date to put into a query. How do i format the date to be able to query the database? • Query to return internal details about stored function in MS-SQL database

  I have been given access to a ms-sql database that is currently used by 3rd party app. As such, I don't have any documentation on how that application stores the data or how it retrieves it. I can figure a few things out based on the names of various tables and the parameters that the user-defined functions takes and returns, but I'm still getting errors at every other turn. I was thinking that it would be really helpful if I could see what the stored functions were doing with the parameters given to return the output. Right now all I've been able to figure out is how to query for the input parameters and the output columns. Is there any built-in information_schema table that will expose what the function is doing between input and output?

  I am coding MS SQL 2005 trigger. I want to make some logging during trigger execution, using INSERT statement into my log table. When there occurs error during execution, I want to raise error and cancel action that cause trigger execution, but not to lose log records. What is the best way to achieve this? Now my trigger logs everything except situation when there is error - because of ROLLBACK. RAISERROR statement is needed in order to inform calling program about error.   I know we can open a particular worksheet of MS Excel using C# by providing the sheet number (1,2,3..) or name (sheet1, sheet2, sheet3...) I have a excel file which has 2 sheets, 1. Values, 2. Results Is there a way to open a sheet giving the sheet name ,i.e, "Values" instead of 1 or [s|S]heet1 in C# ?? I looked thru the old posts but didnt find anything useful... so again, what I am trying to do is, open a Excel worksheet by using its user defined name (Values) instead of the system defined name(1 or [s|S]heet1) any inputs would be greatly appreciated!

  I have a legacy MS NMAKE Makefile I need to fix a few bugs in. There are some very long command lines I wish to debug that are being executed using the NMAKE trick of "inline files": dep: cmd @<<tmpfilename cmd_args.. << When changing the line to dep: echo cmd @<<tmpfilename cmd_args.. << NMAKE complains that the line is too long. Is there any other trick I can apply in order to view the command line NMAKE is actually executing?

• ReSharper Unit Test Runner: Support for Deployment Items

  I like the Unit test runner in ReSharper 4.5, and would like to use it with my MSTest tests, but one thing annoys me: In some of our solutions, we have set up some Deployment Items in the .testrunconfig file. The ReSharper Unit Test runner does not seem to respect this, so I get errors when trying to run the unit tests from ReSharper. Is there any workraound for this ? Update: citizenmatt's answer was correct, the option to use a .testrunconfig with ReSharper exists in the Options dialog of ReSharper. You have to select the unit test provider on the list, then the controls to do that appears. (That was not obvious or discoverable, at least not for me ;-)

• XSD generation from a MS SQL database using schemas

  I'm willing to use NDbUnit on a MS SQL database which uses schemas. I have to generate the XSD schema from the database. Visual Studio has a tool to do that, but Visual Studio 2005 doesn't include the schema information in the generated XSD. Therefore, NDbUnit fails because the generated SQL queries do not match the database. Worse, when I try to use Proteus, the XSD schema doesn't validate against the database, and Proteus fails with a warning telling that data could be lost if this check was skipped. So, my question is: is there any tool that would generate my XSD schema properly and from the database information?

  Yes, it is possible to generate tests on boundary values for functions like "Sum" or "Divide". Pex is a good tool here. But more often we create tests on business behaviour. Let's consider example from classic Beck's tdd book: [Test] public void ShouldRoundOnCreation() { Money money = new Money(20.678); Assert.AreEqual(20.68,money.Amount); Assert.AreEqual(2068,money.Cents); } Can this test be generated? No :) 95 % of tests in my projects check business logic, and can not be generated. Pex (Especially in pair with Moles) can give 100% code coverage, but a high code coverage rate of a test suite does never indicate, that code is well tested - It only gives false confidence that everything is tested. And this is very dangerous. So, the question is - Is Pex really usefull tool?

  Hi, I am planning on starting my 1st VSTO project. What I want to be able to do is: Download and Upload versions of a MS Word document to a web service. With authentication by overriding the save button Call a web service to list a bunch of tag that can be inserted into a document. When a user double clicks a tag the selected tag is inserted into the cursor position. I am pretty sure this is all possible just want some confirmation? Also would like to know how long would it take to make something like this. I think the biggest issue will be authentication and listing exiting files to download then allowing the user to download a .doc and restore previous versions of that file via the web service.

• How to test the XML sent to a web service in Ruby/Rails

  I'm looking for the best way to write unit test for code that POSTs to an external web service. The body of the POST request is an XML document which describes the actions and data for the web service to perform. Now, I've wrapped the webservice in its own class (similar to ActiveResource), and I can't see any way to test the exact XML being generated by the class without breaking encapsulation by exposing some of the internal XML generation as public methods on the class. This seems to be a code smell - from the point-of-view of the users of the class, they should not know, nor care, how the class actually implements the web service call, be it with XML, JSON or carrier pigeons. For an example of the class: class Resource def new #initialize the class end def save! Http.post("http://webservice.com", self.to_xml) end private def to_xml # returns an XML representation of self end end I want to be able to test the XML generated to ensure it conforms to what the specs for the web service are expecting. So can I best do this, without making to_xml a public method?

  In Oracle there is a mechanism to generate sequence numbers e.g.; CREATE SEQUENCE supplier_seq MINVALUE 1 MAXVALUE 999999999999999999999999999 START WITH 1 INCREMENT BY 1 CACHE 20; And then execute the statement supplier_seq.nextval to retrieve the next sequence number. How would you create the same functionality in MS SQL Server ? Edit: I'm not looking for ways to automaticly generate keys for table records. I need to generate a unique value that I can use as an (logical) ID for a process. So I need the exact functionality that Oracle provides.

I want to develop an external test (e.g from a main class) which sends and receives messages to/from the app. server. (I do have full access to the remote server.) My questions are: 1) How do I send messages to the Jboss JMS? 2) Where is the information needed to send a message located on the Jboss? ip, port, queue, user, pw, ect. to set up the local messaging test. 3) Is there a way to config/ develop a mechanism on the remote JMS Jboss server that sends back acknowledgments to the sender (in this case)?   I am observing a weird behavior when clicking links to my ASP.NET application in MS Word 2003 / 2007 document. I have IE8 installed. When I click a link in the document the request that is sent has the user-agent IE7(!?). A new session object is created. Right after that out of nowhere a second request appears this time having user-agent IE8. More over, when I click anything on the requested page, a new session object is once again created, so I cannot rely on anything that has been persisted in the session. Why is it like that?

  I am looking into the unittest package, and I'm not sure of the proper way to structure my test cases when writing a lot of them for the same method. • Is a new thread in a Visual Studio test project aborted when the test ends?

  Hi, i have to do some message exchange with a 3rd party (in a website). When the client posts a page, i start the message exchange. When that doesn't succeed for some reason, i report this to the client by rendering the page with a message. On the background, in a separate thread, i start a process to send abort messages to the 3rd party. I can't do this while the user is waiting for the page to come back, because it might take a few minutes. But in a test project, the test ends when the message to the 3rd party is sent, and after the new thread is started. But it seems that the new thread also ends, when the test is done. Is that normal behaviour? I do start the thread in a new class with a reference to 2 objects from the class which tries to send the message in the first place, may that be a problem?

• MS SQL Server Text Datatype Maxlength = 65,535?

  Software I'm working with uses a text field to store XML. From my searches online, the text datatype is supposed to hold 2^31 - 1 characters. Currently SQL Server is truncating the XML at 65,535 characters every time. I know this is caused by sqlserver, because if I add a 65,536th character to the field directly in Management Studio, it states that it will not update because characters will be truncated. Is the Maxlength really 65,535 or could this be because the database was designed in an earlier version of MS SQL Server (2000) and it's using the legacy text datatype instead of 2005's? If this is the case, will Altering the datatype to Text in sql server 2005 fix this issue?
