• Best Practices for working with files via c#

  Application I work on generates several hundreds of files in a 15 minutes period of times. and the back end of the application takes these files and process them (updates database with those values). One problem is database locks. What are the best practices on working with several thousands of files to avoid locking and efficiently processing these files? Would it be more efficient to create a single file and process it? or process single file at a time? What are so common best practices?

  I have a question in scheduling jobs in web application. If we have to schedule jobs in web application we can either use java util Timer/TimerTask or Quartz(there are also other scheduling mechanism, but I considered Quartz). I was considering which one to use, when i hit the site http://oreilly.com/pub/a/java/archive/quartz.html?page=1 which says using timer has a bad effect as it creates a thread that is out of containers control in the last line. The other pages discuss Quartz and its capabilities, but I can read that Quartz also uses thread and/or threadpool to schedule tasks. My guess is that these threads are also not under the containers control Can anybody clarify this to me Is it safe to use Quartz in my web applications without creating hanging threads or thread locking issues? • Scheduling Swingworker threads

  Hi, I have a 2 processes to perform in my swing application, one to fill a list, and one to do operations on each element on the list. I've just moved the 2 processes into Swingworker threads to stop the GUI locking up while the tasks are performed, and because I will need to do this set of operations to several lists, so concurrency wouldn't be a bad idea in the first place. However, when I just ran fillList.execute();doStuffToList.execute(); the doStuffToList thread to ran on the empty list (duh...). How do I tell the second process to wait until the first one is done? I suppose I could just nest the second process at the end of the first one, but i dunno, it seems like bad practice.

  Hi all, I am trying to figure out why Jetty 6.1.22 is running out of memory on my laptop. I have 2 web applications running JBoss Seam, Hibernate (with EHCache), and separate Quartz scheduler instances. With little load, the server dies throwing OutOfMemory. What can I look for? Would you think that I am not properly closing handles for input streams or files? I tried profiling my application with Netbeans, but it works off and on. Usually, it ends up locking up even though it doesn't use that much CPU or memory. Walter

  Python interpreter has a Global Interpreter Lock, and it is my understanding that extensions must acquire it in a multi-threaded environment. But Boost.Python HOWTO page says the extension function must release the GIL and reacquire it on exit. I want to resist temptation to guess here, so I would like to know what should be GIL locking patterns in the following scenarios: Extension is called from python (presumably running in a python thread). And extension's background thread calls back into Py_* functions. And a final question is, why the linked document says the GIL should be released and re-acquired?

• OutOfMemoryException - out of ideas

  Hi I have a net Windows service that is constantly throwing OutOfMemoryException. The service has two builds for x86 and x64 Windows. However on x64 it consumes a lot more memory. I have tried profiling it with various memory profilers. But I cannot get a clue what the problem is. The diagnosis - service consumes lot of VMSize. Also I tried to look at performance counters (perfmon.exe). What I can see is that heap size is growing and %GC time is 19%. My application has threads and locking objects, DB connections and WCF interface.   I created a new mysql database and i want to use foreign keys with it... I googled and found out this... InnoDB is one of MySQL storage engines, it supports transactions, row-level locking, and foreign-keys. However, by default, InnoDB is not enabled by XAMPP. To enable it, locate the my.cnf configuration file (normally in C:/xampp/mysql/bin directory) and search for the following lines: # Comment the following if you are using InnoDB tables But the path C:/xampp/mysql/bin directory in my system doesn't seem to have such a file... Bearing in mind that this setup uses a Thread Pool, the UI does stay responsive when there are only around 100 iterations of this loop (100 Assets to process). But as soon as this number begins to increase heavily, the UI locks up into eggtimer mode and the thus the log that is writing out to the listbox on the form becomes unreadable. Question Am I right in thinking that the best way around this is to use a Background Worker? And is the UI locking up because even though I'm using lots of different threads (for speed), the UI itself is not on its own separate thread? Suggested Implementations greatly appreciated.

  Hi All, I have two services talking to two different Data-stores (i.e SQL). I am using transactionscope: eg: using(TransactionScope scope = new TransactionScope()) { service1.InsertUser(user);//Insert to SQL Service 1 table User service2.SavePayment(payment);//Save payment SQL Service 2 table payment scope.Complete(); } Service1 is locking the table (User) until the transaction is completed making subsequent transactions with that table sequential. • javax.sql.DataSource.getConnection() locks system

  I'm using the Apache Commons DBCP library for connection pooling in a desktop application. I've done this before and never had a problem but the latest application has started sometimes locking up on the call to getConnection() on my DataSource. The application just hangs after that call. I'm closing up my resources when I'm done with them. Is there any known reason why this might happen? I'm not even sure where to being troubleshooting this now that I've got it narrowed down to this method. It doesn't always hang - sometimes it happens fairly quickly, sometimes it takes a long time. Sometimes it doesn't happen at all, although lately I can get it to happen within a few minutes.

The part that's mysterious to me is that given some arbitrary chunk of code, you need a way to go back afterward and determine if the values used in each step were valid. How do you do that, and how do you do it efficiently? This would also seem to suggest that just like any other 'locking' solution you want to keep your critical sections as small as possible (to decrease the probability of a conflict), am I right? Also, can STM simply detect "another thread entered this area while the computation was executing, therefore the computation is invalid" or can it actually detect whether clobbered values were used (and thus by luck sometimes two threads may execute the same critical section simultaneously without need for rollback)?

• How can I keep a WPF Image from blocking if the ImageSource references an unreachable Url?

  I'm writing a WPF application and trying to bind an image to my view model with the following XAML: <Image Source="{Binding Author.IconUrl, IsAsync=True}" /> The problem is that the image URLs are defined by users and can often refer to images hosted on intranet web servers. When the WPF application is run remotely, it locks up while trying to resolve the images that are now unreachable. I thought the "IsAsync" binding property would cause the load to happen in the background, but it appears that the DNS resolution may still happen in the main thread? What can I do to keep my app from locking, even if the images are unreachable? Thanks, Corey

• Getting consecutive version numbers from Hibernate's @Version usage once per transaction

  We use Hibernate with the following version definition for optimistic locking et. al: <version name="version" access="field" column="VERSION" type="long" unsaved-value="negative"/> This is fine and dandy; however, there is one small problem, which is that the first version for some entities is '0', and for others, it is '1'. Why this is happening, is that for some object graphs, an entity will be subject to both onSave and flushDirty - this is reasonable, such as if two object are circular dependencies. However, the version number gets incremented on both occasions, leading to the above '0' / '1' discrepancy. I'd really like the version number only to ever increment once per transaction. However, I can't see a simple way to do this in the hibernate versioning implementation, without hacking about with an Interceptor (which was how I generated a column value for version before, but I wanted hibernate to do it itself)..

  I'm using WinApi. Is SendMessage/PostMessage a good, thread safe method of communicating with the main window? Suppose, the working thread is creating a bitmap, that must be displayed on the screen. The working thread allocates a bitmap, sends a message with a pointer to this bitmap and waits until GUI thread processes it (for example using SendMessage). The working thread shares no data with other threads. Am I running into troubles with such design? Are there any other possibilities that do not introduce thread synchronizing, locking etc. ?

• Sql server table can be queried but not updated

  i have a table which was always updatable before, but then suddenly i can no longer update the any of the columns in the table. i can still query the whole table and the results come back very fast, but the moment i try to update a column in the table, the update query simply stalls and does nothing. i tried using select req_transactionUOW from master..syslockinfo where req_spid = -2 to see if some orphaned transaction was locking the table, but it returns no results. i can't seems to find signs of my table being locked, but simply cannot update it. any clues as to how to fix the table or whatever state it is in?

  I'm using JPA Toplink Essential, Netbean6.8, GlassFish v3 In my Entity class I added @Version annotation to enable optimistic locking at transaction commit however after I added the annotation, my query started including VERSION as column thus throwing SQL exception. None of this is mentioned in any tutorial I've seen so far. What could be wrong? • Is AsParallel() good practice in a web environment?

  I have no doubt that for client applications, AsParallel() will bring some out-of-the-box performance gains. But what if I would use it in a web environment. Let's say I have a widget framework that loops over all widgets to get their data and render output. This would parallelize great no? I do have my doubts on using AsParallel() in this scenario. What if I have a large number of visitors for my site, isn't IIS going to use multiple threads to handle all requests? Aren't there going to be locking issues presented after a while, or threads dying because all processors are in use? It's just a thought, what do you think about this?

• How do you handle files that can't support concurrent edits in Mercurial?

  I'm using Mercurial with TortoiseHg. Each developer has their own repositories, and there's one central repository on the server for synchronizing our changes. (This will sound lame, but we're using it to manage the source for a legacy VB6 project. Nothing we can do about that...) As has been pointed out elsewhere, there is a big problem in VB6 with merging the .frx (form resources) files. So code changes seem to merge fine, but if two developers both make changes at the same time in the form design view, we can't merge. I'm ok with disallowing concurrent edits, but of course the whole point of Mercurial is that it's distributed so there is no option to force a file to be locked before editing. I don't believe there's a Mercurial solution for this, so I'm wondering: other developers who are using Mercurial for version control, do you have some 3rd party tool that assists with locking files for editing in the cases where it's necessary? Did we make a mistake using Mercurial instead of something like SVN?

• NServiceBus is blocking when hosted in ASP.NET web application

  Hello, I created a simple web application where a search form is filled out, submit button clicked, and a message is sent with the search parameters via nServiceBus. I also have a handler in the same project that picks up the message (from the same queue). For some reason, the web server process blocks until after the message is picked up, is there any reason for this? I set a breakpoint in the message handler and it breaks before the request finishes... locking the browser until I allow the code to continue. I would expect control to return to the browser regardless of when the handler gets fired... Thanks, D.Niemeyer

My question is if I should fence the getter and setter with a lock statement? Or should I simply use the volatile keyword and save the locking?
