Oracle ADF at Oracle OpenWorld 2012

This year is going to be very busy for Oracle ADF developers who'll attend Oracle Open World. Check out the list of Oracle ADF related sessions, labs, demos and other Oracle ADF activities. This list will help you not to miss any ADF related activity. We have over 50 ADF related sessions, multiple labs including new ones on ADF Mobile, Application Life Cycle Management and ADF in Eclipse, we'll have several demo booths where you can meet product managers, and we'll be featured in several keynotes as well. While we have several "beginners" sessions, you'll find that we have a lot of in-depth technical sessions and sessions that cover best-practices too. In an industry segment that nobody is ever 'asleep', I suppose no time is a good time to take SQL Server down for upgrades, and I had forgotten that my host was going to be doing that. Last night about 9pm (Arizona), in the middle of working on a blog post, things started going wonky and I finally realized everything was ok except for SQL Server. I turned in a ticket on it and was reminded about the maintenance schedule... guess I file those away in memory and just assume they'll happen while I'm asleep :) So, looking at the schedule, it appears that SQL Server for SilverlightCream is going to be down tonight. Minimum is 9-12pm Arizona time... mileage and time may vary. Since all the posts are run through SC to get the Skim count, having SQL down sucks, but I'd rather we got maintenance than have to react to a crash because of something that wasn't maintained. I'll try to get the next 'Cream post out early so that the bulk of folks can dig through it prior to the outage. Meanwhile, for those of you in Phoenix, tonight is our Phoenix Silverlight User Group April meeting, and Joel Neubeck is going to be giving us the run-through on Windows Phone 7! We're not as advanced as those MVP rock-stars in California like Victor Gaudioso who streams his user group meeting, so you'll just have to show up for the goodness! Execute a SSIS package in Sync or Async mode from SQL Server 2012

Today I had to schedule a package stored in the shiny new SSIS Catalog store that can be enabled with SQL Server 2012. (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh479588(v=SQL.110).aspx) Once your packages are stored here, they will be executed using the new stored procedures created for this purpose. This is the script that will get executed if you try to execute your packages right from management studio or through a SQL Server Agent job, will be similar to the following: Declare @execution_id bigint EXEC [SSISDB].[catalog].[create_execution] @package_name='my_package.dtsx', @execution_id=@execution_id OUTPUT, @folder_name=N'BI', @project_name=N'DWH', @use32bitruntime=False, @reference_id=Null Select @execution_id DECLARE @var0 smallint = 1 EXEC [SSISDB].[catalog].[set_execution_parameter_value] @execution_id, @object_type=50, @parameter_name=N'LOGGING_LEVEL', @parameter_value=@var0 DECLARE @var1 bit = 0 EXEC [SSISDB].[catalog].[set_execution_parameter_value] @execution_id, @object_type=50, @parameter_name=N'DUMP_ON_ERROR', @parameter_value=@var1 EXEC [SSISDB].[catalog].[start_execution] @execution_id GO The problem here is that the procedure will simply start the execution of the package and will return as soon as the package as been started…thus giving you the opportunity to execute packages asynchrously from your T-SQL code. This is just *great*, but what happens if I what to execute a package and WAIT for it to finish (and thus having a synchronous execution of it)? You have to be sure that you add the “SYNCHRONIZED” parameter to the package execution. Before the start_execution procedure: exec [SSISDB].[catalog].[set_execution_parameter_value] @execution_id, @object_type=50, @parameter_name=N'SYNCHRONIZED', @parameter_value=1 And that’s it . PS From the RC0, the SYNCHRONIZED parameter is automatically added each time you schedule a package execution through the SQL Server Agent. If you’re using an external scheduler, just keep this post in mind .

What is the difference between Callback<T> and Java 8's Supplier<T>?

I've been switching over to Java from C# after some recommendations from some over at CodeReview. So, when I was looking into LWJGL, one thing I remembered was that every call to Display must be executed on the same thread that the Display.create() method was invoked on. Remembering this, I whipped up a class that looks a bit like this. public class LwjglDisplayWindow implements DisplayWindow { private final static int TargetFramesPerSecond = 60; private final Scheduler _scheduler; public LwjglDisplayWindow(Scheduler displayScheduler, DisplayMode displayMode) throws LWJGLException { _scheduler = displayScheduler; Display.setDisplayMode(displayMode); Display.create(); } public void dispose() { Display.destroy(); } @Override public int getTargetFramesPerSecond() { return TargetFramesPerSecond; } @Override public Future<Boolean> isClosed() { return _scheduler.schedule(() -> Display.isCloseRequested()); } } While writing this class you'll notice that I created a method called isClosed() that returns a Future<Boolean>. This dispatches a function to my Scheduler interface (which is nothing more than a wrapper around an ScheduledExecutorService. While writing the schedule method on the Scheduler I noticed that I could either use a Supplier<T> argument or a Callable<T> argument to represent the function that is passed in. ScheduledExecutorService didn't contain an override for Supplier<T> but I noticed that the lambda expression () -> Display.isCloseRequested() is actually type compatible with both Callable<bool> and Supplier<bool>. My question is, is there a difference between those two, semantically or otherwise - and if so, what is it, so I can adhere to it?

Hack a Linksys Router into a Ambient Data Monitor

If you have a data source (like a weather report, bus schedule, or other changing data set) you can pull it and display it with an ambient data monitor; this fun build combines a hacked Linksys router and a modified toy bus to display transit arrival times. John Graham-Cumming wanted to keep an eye on the current bus arrival time tables without constantly visiting the web site to check them. His workaround turns a hacked Linksys router, a display, a modified London city bus (you could hack apart a more project-specific enclosure, of course), and a simple bit code that polls the bus schedule’s API, into a cool ambient data monitor that displays the arrival time, in minutes, of the next two buses that will pass by his stop. The whole thing could easily be adapted to another API to display anything from stock prices to weather temps. Hit up the link below for more information on the project. Feedback on meeting of the MSCC - 20.07.2013

Impression of our meetup on 20.07.2013 Low quantity but high quality! Meetup summary: Quick introduction to ?MSCC? and interesting topics in general, especially for freshman from/at university. It also seems that the open concept of OUYA (Android-based gaming console) got some attention and hopefully new fans. Getting into a technology which requires experience when you have no experience

It seems that Sharepoint is a technology which is very hard to get into. All the jobs in this tech require experience in working with it (Eg 2 years development experience in MOSS). If I wanted to get into this - but had no job that used the tech, how can I get experience in it to get an experienced job? Jobs state you need "2 years professional experience in MOSS 2007" but then if you have never done it, you won't get the job. The only possible way is you will be doing this at home and not in a team, but if you work in the mean time, that will negate this (it's not like teamworking is tech specific). Many people think if you decide to make a project at home you're just going to play about aimlessly rather than work to specs (where as in my current situation it's vice versa) but if you're dedicated, like me, you would write them - just not with the same presentation. Would employers treat experience at home as professional experience? Biztalk is another prime example of this. Thanks

Get http status in Qt WebKit

Hello all: What I would like to implement is 1 Using Qt's WebView(part of QtWebKit) to access some page. 2 Show specified html page if got HTTP 4xx, 5xx status (Ex HTTP 404, 500). 3 Also shows specified page when network connection is unavailable. For now, I had only done job 1... In job 2, how did I get http status from WebView ? In job 3, I'm looking about QUrl APIs now. Anyone have idea or expreience yet ?

I know that it Delegates all other attributes from Person class. but I do not understand the way it works. for example why from Person class? as I do not explicitly tell it to. person(module is different than Person(class) Any help is highly appreciated :)

Why do software engineers hate writing documentation?

I ask because I quite enjoy it! I'm talking about design documentation and implementation notes (NOT user manuals), which are non-existent in most of the codebases I've been handed. I can understand why a developer wouldn't want to write requirements (that's the analyst's job) or the user documentation (that's a technical writer's job) but I don't get why developers hate writing design docs. I don't think I would feel as if I'd finished the job if I only wrote the code and walked away -- mainly because when I've been introduced to code-only situations I've seen how hard it is to figure out what's been done and what the software does. I would hate for people to suffer the same situation when inheriting my code. What makes you loath writing supporting documentation for your code?

How to filter Backbone.js Collection and Rerender App View?

Is is a total Backbone.js noob question. I am working off of the ToDo Backbone.js example trying to build out a fairly simple single app interface. While the todo project is more about user input, this app is more about filtering the data based on the user options (click events). I am completely new to Backbone.js and Mongoose and have been unable to find a good example of what I am trying to do. I have been able to get my api to pull the data from the MongoDB collection and drop it into the Backbone.js collection which renders it in the app. What I cannot for the life of me figure out how to do is filter that data and re-render the app view. I am trying to filter by the "type" field in the document. Decode JSON with mochijson2 in Erlang

I have a var that has some JSON data: A = <<"{\"job\": {\"id\": \"1\"}}">>. Using mochijson2, I decode the data: Struct = mochijson2:decode(A). And now I have this: {struct,[{<<"job">>,{struct,[{<<"id">>,<<"1">>}]}}]} I am trying to read (for example), "job" or "id". I tried using struct.get_value but it doesn't seem to work. Any ideas?
