  • Allowing Access to HttpContext in WCF REST Services

    - by Rick Strahl
    If you’re building WCF REST Services you may find that WCF’s OperationContext, which provides some amount of access to Http headers on inbound and outbound messages, is pretty limited in that it doesn’t provide access to everything and sometimes in a not so convenient manner. For example accessing query string parameters explicitly is pretty painful: [OperationContract] [WebGet] public string HelloWorld() { var properties = OperationContext.Current.IncomingMessageProperties; var property = properties[HttpRequestMessageProperty.Name] as HttpRequestMessageProperty; string queryString = property.QueryString; var name = StringUtils.GetUrlEncodedKey(queryString,"Name"); return "Hello World " + name; } And that doesn’t account for the logic in GetUrlEncodedKey to retrieve the querystring value. It’s a heck of a lot easier to just do this: [OperationContract] [WebGet] public string HelloWorld() { var name = HttpContext.Current.Request.QueryString["Name"] ?? string.Empty; return "Hello World " + name; } Ok, so if you follow the REST guidelines for WCF REST you shouldn’t have to rely on reading query string parameters manually but instead rely on routing logic, but you know what: WCF REST is a PITA anyway and anything to make things a little easier is welcome. To enable the second scenario there are a couple of steps that you have to take on your service implementation and the configuration file. Add aspNetCompatibiltyEnabled in web.config Fist you need to configure the hosting environment to support ASP.NET when running WCF Service requests. This ensures that the ASP.NET pipeline is fired up and configured for every incoming request. <system.serviceModel>     <serviceHostingEnvironment aspNetCompatibilityEnabled="true" multipleSiteBindingsEnabled="true" /> </system.serviceModel> Markup your Service Implementation with AspNetCompatibilityRequirements Attribute Next you have to mark up the Service Implementation – not the contract if you’re using a separate interface!!! – with the AspNetCompatibilityRequirements attribute: [ServiceContract(Namespace = "RateTestService")] [AspNetCompatibilityRequirements(RequirementsMode = AspNetCompatibilityRequirementsMode.Allowed)] public class RestRateTestProxyService Typically you’ll want to use Allowed as the preferred option. The other options are NotAllowed and Required. Allowed will let the service run if the web.config attribute is not set. Required has to have it set. All these settings determine whether an ASP.NET host AppDomain is used for requests. Once Allowed or Required has been set on the implemented class you can make use of the ASP.NET HttpContext object. When I allow for ASP.NET compatibility in my WCF services I typically add a property that exposes the Context and Request objects a little more conveniently: public HttpContext Context { get { return HttpContext.Current; } } public HttpRequest Request { get { return HttpContext.Current.Request; } } While you can also access the Response object and write raw data to it and manipulate headers THAT is probably not such a good idea as both your code and WCF will end up writing into the output stream. However it might be useful in some situations where you need to take over output generation completely and return something completely custom. Remember though that WCF REST DOES actually support that as well with Stream responses that essentially allow you to return any kind of data to the client so using Response should really never be necessary. Should you or shouldn’t you? WCF purists will tell you never to muck with the platform specific features or the underlying protocol, and if you can avoid it you definitely should avoid it. Querystring management in particular can be handled largely with Url Routing, but there are exceptions of course. Try to use what WCF natively provides – if possible as it makes the code more portable. For example, if you do enable ASP.NET Compatibility you won’t be able to self host a WCF REST service. At the same time realize that especially in WCF REST there are number of big holes or access to some features are a royal pain and so it’s not unreasonable to access the HttpContext directly especially if it’s only for read-only access. Since everything in REST works of URLS and the HTTP protocol more control and easier access to HTTP features is a key requirement to building flexible services. It looks like vNext of the WCF REST stuff will feature many improvements along these lines with much deeper native HTTP support that is often so useful in REST applications along with much more extensibility that allows for customization of the inputs and outputs as data goes through the request pipeline. I’m looking forward to this stuff as WCF REST as it exists today still is a royal pain (in fact I’m struggling with a mysterious version conflict/crashing error on my machine that I have not been able to resolve – grrrr…).© Rick Strahl, West Wind Technologies, 2005-2011Posted in ASP.NET  AJAX  WCF

  • WebCenter Content (WCC) Trace Sections

    - by Kevin Smith
    Kyle has a good post on how to modify the size and number of WebCenter Content (WCC) trace files. His post reminded me I have been meaning to write a post on WCC trace sections for a while. searchcache - Tells you if you query was found in the WCC search cache. searchquery - Shows the processing of the query as it is converted form what the user submitted to the end query that will be sent to the database. Shows conversion from the universal query syntax to the syntax specific to the search solution WCC is configured to use. services (verbose) - Lists the filters that are called for each service. This will let you know what filters are available for each service and will also tell you what filters are used by WCC add-on components and any custom components you have installed. The How To Component Sample has a list of filters, but it has not been updated since 7.5, so it is a little outdated now. With each new release WCC adds more filters. If you have a filter that has no code attached to it you will see output like this: services/6    09.25 06:40:26.270    IdcServer-423    Called filter event computeDocName with no filter plugins registered When a WCC add-on or custom component uses a filter you will see trace output like this: services/6    09.25 06:40:26.275    IdcServer-423    Calling filter event postValidateCheckinData on class collections.CollectionValidateCheckinData with parameter postValidateCheckinDataservices/6    09.25 06:40:26.275    IdcServer-423    Calling filter event postValidateCheckinData on class collections.CollectionFilters with parameter postValidateCheckinData As you can see from this sample output it is possible to have multiple code points using the same filter. systemdatabase - Dumps the database call AFTER it executes. This can be somewhat troublesome if you are trying to track down some weird database problems. We had a problem where WCC was getting into a deadlock situation. We turned on the systemdatabase trace section and thought we had the problem database call, but it turned out since it printed out the database call after it was executed we were looking at the database call BEFORE the one causing the deadlock. We ended up having to turn on tracing at the database level to see the database call WCC was making that was causing the deadlock. socketrequests (verbose) - dumps the actual messages received and sent over the socket connection by WCC for a service. If you have gzip enabled you will see junk on the response coming back from WCC. For debugging disable the gzip of the WCC response.Here is an example of the dump of the request for a GET_SEARCH_RESULTS service call. socketrequests/6 09.25 06:46:02.501 IdcServer-6 request: REMOTE_USER=sysadmin.USER-AGENT=Java;.Stel socketrequests/6 09.25 06:46:02.501 IdcServer-6 request: lent.CIS.11g.CONTENT_TYPE=text/html.HEADER socketrequests/6 09.25 06:46:02.501 IdcServer-6 request: _ENCODING=UTF-8.REQUEST_METHOD=POST.CONTEN socketrequests/6 09.25 06:46:02.501 IdcServer-6 request: T_LENGTH=270.HTTP_HOST=CIS.$$$$.NoHttpHead socketrequests/6 09.25 06:46:02.501 IdcServer-6 request: ers=0.IsJava=1.IdcService=GET_SEARCH_RESUL socketrequests/6 09.25 06:46:02.501 IdcServer-6 request: [email protected] socketrequests/6 09.25 06:46:02.501 IdcServer-6 request: calData.SortField=dDocName.ClientEncoding= socketrequests/6 09.25 06:46:02.501 IdcServer-6 request: UTF-8.IdcService=GET_SEARCH_RESULTS.UserTi socketrequests/6 09.25 06:46:02.501 IdcServer-6 request: meZone=UTC.UserDateFormat=iso8601.SortDesc socketrequests/6 09.25 06:46:02.501 IdcServer-6 request: =ASC.QueryText=dDocType..matches..`Documen socketrequests/6 09.25 06:46:02.501 IdcServer-6 request: t`.@end. userstorage, jps - Provides trace details for user authentication and authorization. Includes information on the determination of what roles and accounts a user has access to. In 11g a new trace section, jps, was added with the addition of the JpsUserProvider to communicate with WebLogic Server. The WCC developers decide when to use the verbose option for their trace output, so sometime you need to try verbose to see what different information you get. One of the things I would always have liked to see if the ability to turn on verbose output selectively for individual trace sections. When you turn on verbose output you get it for all trace sections you have enabled. This can quickly fill up your trace files with a lot of information if you have the socket trace section turned on.

  • OAuth with RestSharp in Windows Phone

    - by midoBB
    Nearly every major API provider uses OAuth for the user authentication and while it is easy to understand the concept, using it in a Windows Phone app isn’t pretty straightforward. So for this quick tutorial we will be using RestSharp for WP7 and the API from getglue.com (an entertainment site) to authorize the user. So the first step is to get the OAuth request token and then we redirect our browserControl to the authorization URL private void StartLogin() {   var client = new RestClient("https://api.getglue.com/"); client.Authenticator = OAuth1Authenticator.ForRequestToken("ConsumerKey", "ConsumerSecret"); var request = new RestRequest("oauth/request_token"); client.ExecuteAsync(request, response => { _oAuthToken = GetQueryParameter(response.Content, "oauth_token"); _oAuthTokenSecret = GetQueryParameter(response.Content, "oauth_token_secret"); string authorizeUrl = "http://getglue.com/oauth/authorize" + "?oauth_token=" + _oAuthToken + "&style=mobile"; Dispatcher.BeginInvoke(() => { browserControl.Navigate(new Uri(authorizeUrl)); }); }); } private static string GetQueryParameter(string input, string parameterName) { foreach (string item in input.Split('&')) { var parts = item.Split('='); if (parts[0] == parameterName) { return parts[1]; } } return String.Empty; } Then we listen to the browser’s Navigating Event private void Navigating(Microsoft.Phone.Controls.NavigatingEventArgs e) { if (e.Uri.AbsoluteUri.Contains("oauth_callback")) { var arguments = e.Uri.AbsoluteUri.Split('?'); if (arguments.Length < 1) return; GetAccessToken(arguments[1]); } } private void GetAccessToken(string uri) { var requestToken = GetQueryParameter(uri, "oauth_token"); var client = new RestClient("https://api.getglue.com/"); client.Authenticator = OAuth1Authenticator.ForAccessToken(ConsumerKey, ConsumerSecret, _oAuthToken, _oAuthTokenSecret); var request = new RestRequest("oauth/access_token"); client.ExecuteAsync(request, response => { AccessToken = GetQueryParameter(response.Content, "oauth_token"); AccessTokenSecret = GetQueryParameter(response.Content, "oauth_token_secret"); UserId = GetQueryParameter(response.Content, "glue_userId"); }); } Now to test it we can access the user’s friends list var client = new RestClient("http://api.getglue.com/v2"); client.Authenticator = OAuth1Authenticator.ForProtectedResource(ConsumerKey, ConsumerSecret, GAccessToken, AccessTokenSecret); var request = new RestRequest("/user/friends"); request.AddParameter("userId", UserId,ParameterType.GetOrPost); // request.AddParameter("category", "all",ParameterType.GetOrPost); client.ExecuteAsync(request, response => { TreatFreindsList(); }); And that’s it now we can access all OAuth methods using RestSharp.

  • Dynamic Strategy Pattern [migrated]

    - by Karl Barker
    So I'm writing a web service architecture which includes FunctionProvider classes which do the actual processing of requests, and a main Endpoint class which receives and delegates requests to the proper FunctionProvider. I don't know exactly the FunctionProviders available at runtime, so I need to be able to 'register' (if that's the right word) them with my main Endpoint class, and query them to see if they match an incoming request. public class MyFunc implements FunctionProvider{ static { MyEndpoint.register(MyFunc); } public Boolean matchesRequest(Request req){...} public void processRequest(Request req){...} } public class MyEndpoint{ private static ArrayList<FunctionProvider> functions = new ArrayList<FunctionProvider>(); public void register(Class clz){ functions.add(clz); } public void doPost(Request request){ //find the FunctionProvider in functions //matching the request } } I've really not done much reflective Java like this (and the above is likely wrong, but hopefully demonstrates my intentions). What's the nicest way to implement this without getting hacky?

  • Spring Security and the Synchronizer Token J2EE pattern, problem when authentication fails.

    - by dfuse
    Hey, we are using Spring Security 2.0.4. We have a TransactionTokenBean which generates a unique token each POST, the bean is session scoped. The token is used for the duplicate form submission problem (and security). The TransactionTokenBean is called from a Servlet filter. Our problem is the following, after a session timeout occured, when you do a POST in the application Spring Security redirects to the logon page, saving the original request. After logging on again the TransactionTokenBean is created again, since it is session scoped, but then Spring forwards to the originally accessed url, also sending the token that was generated at that time. Since the TransactionTokenBean is created again, the tokens do not match and our filter throws an Exception. I don't quite know how to handle this elegantly, (or for that matter, I can't even fix it with a hack), any ideas? This is the code of the TransactionTokenBean: public class TransactionTokenBean implements Serializable { public static final int TOKEN_LENGTH = 8; private RandomizerBean randomizer; private transient Logger logger; private String expectedToken; public String getUniqueToken() { return expectedToken; } public void init() { resetUniqueToken(); } public final void verifyAndResetUniqueToken(String actualToken) { verifyUniqueToken(actualToken); resetUniqueToken(); } public void resetUniqueToken() { expectedToken = randomizer.getRandomString(TOKEN_LENGTH, RandomizerBean.ALPHANUMERICS); getLogger().debug("reset token to: " + expectedToken); } public void verifyUniqueToken(String actualToken) { if (getLogger().isDebugEnabled()) { getLogger().debug("verifying token. expected=" + expectedToken + ", actual=" + actualToken); } if (expectedToken == null || actualToken == null || !isValidToken(actualToken)) { throw new IllegalArgumentException("missing or invalid transaction token"); } if (!expectedToken.equals(actualToken)) { throw new InvalidTokenException(); } } private boolean isValidToken(String actualToken) { return StringUtils.isAlphanumeric(actualToken); } public void setRandomizer(RandomizerBean randomizer) { this.randomizer = randomizer; } private Logger getLogger() { if (logger == null) { logger = Logger.getLogger(TransactionTokenBean.class); } return logger; } } and this is the Servlet filter (ignore the Ajax stuff): public class SecurityFilter implements Filter { static final String AJAX_TOKEN_PARAM = "ATXTOKEN"; static final String TOKEN_PARAM = "TXTOKEN"; private WebApplicationContext webApplicationContext; private Logger logger = Logger.getLogger(SecurityFilter.class); public void init(FilterConfig config) { setWebApplicationContext(WebApplicationContextUtils.getWebApplicationContext(config.getServletContext())); } public void destroy() { } public void doFilter(ServletRequest req, ServletResponse response, FilterChain chain) throws IOException, ServletException { HttpServletRequest request = (HttpServletRequest) req; if (isPostRequest(request)) { if (isAjaxRequest(request)) { log("verifying token for AJAX request " + request.getRequestURI()); getTransactionTokenBean(true).verifyUniqueToken(request.getParameter(AJAX_TOKEN_PARAM)); } else { log("verifying and resetting token for non-AJAX request " + request.getRequestURI()); getTransactionTokenBean(false).verifyAndResetUniqueToken(request.getParameter(TOKEN_PARAM)); } } chain.doFilter(request, response); } private void log(String line) { if (logger.isDebugEnabled()) { logger.debug(line); } } private boolean isPostRequest(HttpServletRequest request) { return "POST".equals(request.getMethod().toUpperCase()); } private boolean isAjaxRequest(HttpServletRequest request) { return request.getParameter("AJAXREQUEST") != null; } private TransactionTokenBean getTransactionTokenBean(boolean ajax) { return (TransactionTokenBean) webApplicationContext.getBean(ajax ? "ajaxTransactionTokenBean" : "transactionTokenBean"); } void setWebApplicationContext(WebApplicationContext context) { this.webApplicationContext = context; } }

    I'm currently in the progress of making a url shortening service that will let the creator see the http request headers that the browser has made when visitors visit the url. The visitors won't be made aware that they are being tracked, but obviously nothing is personally identifiable. Is there anything I should be made aware of ethically or legally that makes this a bad idea?

    So what I'm trying to do here is get the headers of a given URL so I can determine the mime-type. I want to be able to see if http://somedomain/foo/ will return an html document or a jpg image for example. Thus, I need to figure out how to send a HEAD request so that I can read the mime-type without having to download the content. Does anyone know of an easy way of doing this?

Trying to follow this guide (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931351) using certreq.exe doesn't help, it fails without any hint except that it prints its manual. Any suggestions appreciated, I hope I won't have to export my public key and generate the csr with openssl :/
