• High shmmax value in Redhat 6.3

  We are using Redhat 6.3 with 30G RAM to host our Postgres server. The (default) shmmax value is 68,719,476,736 In some forums I have read that having an shmmax value larger than the RAM causes extensive paging, but in the Redhat forums it warns against changing a kernel parameter that is already configured to a value larger than the minimum requirements for an environment. In ServerFault I've read that this probably has no impact. So is there any impact of having shmmax value RAM in a DB server, or the kernel understands this and handles it appropriately? Thanks

• Installing Drupal: Database configuration problem.

  I am trying to install Drupal 6.16 on a clean website. I get through the "Verify Requirements" page easily. On the Database Configuration, I supply all the proper info, but "Save and Continue" returns me back to the same page, with no error message. I am unable to proceed past this point. I've verified my info with the ISP, including a non-local database host (under Advanced Options), and that the database user has full DBA rights. The lack of an error message is particularly frustrating. Do you have any ideas what the problem is, or how to pursue it and resolve it?

• 2 "P4" power connectors *AND* an 8 pin EPS connector -- all necessary?

  I recently bought an Arima SW350 motherboard. It supports 16 ddr simms as well as 2 opteron 2xx CPUs, so I imagine it may have pretty heavy power requirements... It has a 24 pin ATX power connector, 2 4 pin "P4" power connectors, and an 8 pin EPS power connector. My supermicro power supply has a 24 pin ATX connector and the EPS connector, and one P4 connector. Can I safely run this thing with only one P4 connector plugged in? Can I safely get a "hard disk to P4" adapter and use that to power the other P4 connector on the motherboard? Do I just need a new power supply? The board's documentation is pretty thin on the topic.

  Hi, I have a Dell 2850 and I want to install Windows 2008 Server. Problem is that my C drive only has 16GB of space. The requirements say I need at least 20. I have an open bay for a drive. If I put in another drive, how can I add that to the array and them make it only for the C drive? what do I do? Thank you. edit: I don't want to remove any drives. I just want to add a new one to the existing array. Can I do that and make sure that new drive is for the logical C drive?

• Java application not starting in Tomcat, Plesk 9 server

  Hi I have a Plesk 9.3 CentOS 5 server on which I installed the addon to have Tomcat functions. One application I have uploaded appears in the Plesk Tomcat user panel but with a yellow exclamation mark and the error "Actual status of the application does not correspond to the status retrieved from the database". The app therefore does not run, while other uploaded test .war applications do. The server runs Tomcat tomcat5.5.23-0jpp.7.el5_2.1 which matches the requirements for the required app according the the company that made it. While searching for the solution I could find all 3 uploaded .war applications in /usr/share/tomcat5/psa-wars/domainhere.com/ but they do not seem uncompressed there even though 2 of them run fine. Not enough Tomcat / Java knowlede to go on... Any idea to help me here ? Best regards.

  I have a specific website I often use (specifically, http://www.pygame.org/), which has an awful color scheme. I would like to change the color scheme of the site, but I haven't been able to find a good tool for the job. Some basic requirements: It should not be universal to all websites, or affect other websites. I want this to be semi-automatic. I don't want to have to re-define the theme for each page of the site. I want to continue to access the site online (I don't want a local copy of the entire site) Not OS-specific (browser-specific is okay) I am currently using Firefox, but I am also happy with Chrome. There may be some limitations on what is able to be done automatically, as the CSS seems to be embedded in the HTML (and some also in the HTML tags). I would like to remove as much of the green as possible. Is there an existing extension/add-on that does this?

• Apache ProxyPass/ProxyPassReverse to IIS

  We have an ASP.NET web application which is mapped to a folder on an apache hosted php site using ProxyPass.ProxyPassReverse. A couple of problems being encountered. cookies are being lost which breaks the site navigation, this can be overcome by setting the asp app as cookieless. Forms authentication is used on the ASP site, this is also broken withe the proxypass in place, suspect this is cookie related also. ASP site works ok when run from a domain/ip address. Use of a separate domain / sub-domain is not an option duew to client requirements.

  I already use Google Analytics on my page, but I'd like to get additional info from log files. I've looked at various packages during last days, but nothing impressed me so far. Some requirements: must work on log file level (I use apache combined logs, but can configure apache to produce other types of logs) can generate static reports (windows/linux) or use GUI (windows only) should be easy to add custom user agents, and rerun analysis if it can recognize installation of eclipse plugins from log, that would be big plus understands google serp position referer should not require two days to setup (awstats, I am looking at you) should be still under active developement (i.e. analog isn't good answer) preferrably free, or at not very expensive :-) Any good analyzers programs out there?

• How can we implement network search for Windows AND OS X clients?

  We have a network with Windows 7 and OS X (10.5 and 10.6) computers. Our servers run on Windows Server 2003 (1 Small Business Server, 2 Standard). We need to be able to search through about 15.000 - 30.000 documents in our archives. The best solution would be if users can search directly from the Windows menu (on Windows 7) or the Spotlight menu (on OS X 10.5 and 10.6). Also good would be if users can search directly from the search bar in their browsers, or by first visiting a site with the search form. In case the users search through the browser, it's important they they are able to open a file in the search results just by clicking on it. I have tested Microsoft Search Server Express, but it doesn't meet the requirements (no OS X support, results in the browser can't be opened by clicking in anything but Internet Explorer). I have looked at Spotlight server, but that only supports OS X. Thanks!

  I am trying to determine which distro to sink my teeth into. I am new to the Linux world and would like to choose a distro to focus on. I have read that CentOS uses less resources than Ubuntu, which is an issue for me since I am renting a VPS and resource cost is an issue. I have also read that Ubuntu has more up-to-date packages which is a concern for me as I want to use PHP and some packages that have a fair amount of dependencies. I am not using Linux as a desktop OS, rather just as a server for Apache, PHP, PERL, and Java development. What would be the best choice for a server OS? CentOS or Ubuntu? Are the resource requirements that different? Are the packages that different between the two? Thanks.

I'm wondering how much it would cost to properly set (or teach me how to do it) everything to get my app up and running. Specific requirements 1) trac hooks should be in place, which enables commmit messages to be updated in trac issues. 2) It should have emailTotracScript or MailToTracPlugin installed, with which an issue can be reported via email. If its located in Asia pacific it would be great, as time delay from the US is very high. I am already using sourcerepo.com and its very good.   I am currently studying for an A-Plus certification to which was recently added troubleshooting Windows 7 to the exam. You also have to be very familiar with Vista as well. I only have XP on my Compaq Presario V2000, but I wanted to set it up ( I believe I have the minimum requirements for both ) so that I could run trial versions of Vista and 7 virtually.Windows 2000 is also on the exam.   We have a requirement from management to give limited access of our Application to Distributors \ Dealers to look at their account statements in our books of account, enter their purchase requirements (sales order for us). We have given a few of them the RDC who connect to our terminal server and access the reports. This involves licensing of TS Client per each distributor. Is it more better, secure and less costly if a web based application is made to only enter the orders and retrive reports like pending orders, ledgers, receivables etc. Also which is more secure as far as database access is concerened...browser based access or RDC access. My computer satisfied all the minimum system requirements it required. After installing the Card in PCI Express Slot I started the computer. But it now hangs at the POST screen i.e.(the first screen when the PC loads). It hangs at Checking NVRAM. I had checked the graphic card on other PC and its works perfectly. So I think there's no problem in the Graphic card. If I remove my graphic card and run my PC with built in Graphic card, my PC works and doesn't hang. So, what can be the problem? • Boxee on Dell 32in TV causes headaches, how to troubleshoot?

  I have revamped an old pc, installing 4GB ram and a 256MB video card so that I could run Boxee to a Dell W3200 series TV that came with my apartment. It is connected via VGA, resolution is 1360x768, 24bit color, 60Htz refresh rate. Unfortunately, every time I use it I end up with a headache after less that 30 min. I have had my eyes check recently, and am able to play xbox (connected via hdmi) on the same TV without problems. What are the potential causes? My system seems to well meet or exceed the min requirements for boxee, XP, AMD Atholon 64 X2 Dual Core, 4GB RAM. Could it be the VGA cable? What is the most cost effective way to trouble shoot?

Ultimately, I am able to handle all unique subdomains and parse correctly but I am trying to achieve the following: (ideally with mod_rewrite): when a consumer visits www.site.com/john4, the server processes that request as: www.site.com?Agent=john4 Our requirements are: The URL should continue to show www.site.com/john4 even though it was redirected to www.site.com?index.php?Agent=john4 If a file (of any extension OR a directory) exists with the name, the entire process stops an it tries to pull that file instead: for example: www.site.com/file would pull up (www.site.com/file.php if file.php existed on the server. www.site.com/pages would go to www.site.com/pages/index.php if the pages directory exists).   I have servers with Shadow Copies enabled taking snapshots a couple times a day. From the server, if you look at the local devices you can see the Previous Versions being populated reliably. But from remote clients, the ability for an end-user to see the Previous Versions seems to be very hit-or-miss. For the sake of this question you can assume that all my clients are Windows 7 and the Servers are Windows Server 2008 R2. Is there an exhaustive list of everything that is required for end user to see Previous Versions? Are their any requirements for a certain level of share or filesystem permissions, other then read access? Does something need to be open on the firewall, other then what is already in-place for normal Windows networking?

• Receiving faxes on printer even while computer is shut down?

  I normally send faxes with a very old fax machine and I was thinking it takes so much time for every fax to be scanned for all the numbers so I would like to send faxes with a printer. I already have an all-in-one printer, it can scan and print, but I have the document I want to fax on my computer already, so there is no need to scan. Now, the question is if I buy a fax capable printer, will it receive my faxes even when the computer is shut down or do I need to keep the computer on? What I really want is a way to send a lot of faxes to a lot of numbers as fast as possible (the document already in the computer through scan or sending) to be able to receive the fax in my computer (even while off) so I can print it with my printer If both are possible then what requirements do I need? Also, I could not find any info on the internet about receiving faxes on the computer.

I want a specific URL to load like this: http://example.com/f/2011/image.png?attribute=small When a URL in a format such as this hits, I'd like to rewrite it to hit the server as: http://example.com/generate.php?f=2011/image.png&attribute=small Based on above, my question is two-fold: How can I rewrite the URL in htaccess to meet my requirements above? If the original URL didn't have the attribute query string parameter, how can I ensure attribute will be false/blank/etc when it hits the server via htaccess?

• Write hash password to LDAP when creating a new user

  I am working on a project with a central user database system. One of the requirements of the system is that there should be only one set of users for all the application. FreeRADIUS and Samba are two my applications that both use LDAP as their backend. Since users must be the same for the entire system that contains many other applications, I have to read the list of users from the central database and recreate them in the LDAP directories for Samba and FreeRADIUS. The problem is that users are sent to me from another entity and I can save them in the database with their hash passwords. I don't have access to their cleartext passwords. I am wondering if I could enter directly a hash password for a new user in LDAP with my preferred hash mechanism. If not, can any one tell me what strategy I have to use? I am running my server on UBUNTU 12.04 and all other applications are the latest versions. My database system is PostgreSQL 9.2. Thank you
