• Windows Vista - Can't start any program without choosing "Run as administrator"

  A friend called me saying that her computer recently said it was applying a Windows update when it was shutting down. Now when logged in as her normal user whenever she tries to run any program from the start menu or from a shortcut on the desktop she gets the following popup: "Windows cannot access the specified device path or file You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item" If she right-clicks and chooses 'Run as administrator' the program will run. We checked the Windows update history and it said the update was applied successfully and that there are no updates available. Unfortunately I'm in a different city so I don't have physical access to the system to look at it any further. Has anyone had a similar problem or have any suggestions?

  What would be a good way to make a script run every time my computer connects to the network in Ubuntu? Would I somehow use dbus to do this? Background: when I'm on the train I run a short Perl script to click a button on the splash page. That way I can immediately use the internet without having to manually visit a pointless website. My script is a near-perfect solution, but it would be perfect if it could run automatically any time I connect to the network.

• Set a custom favicon locally, that carries across the entire site.

  Is there a way to add a custom favicon to an App Tab? In the above thread, @admintech links to a great plugin for changing favicons which covers both the bookmarks folder and the address bar/tab bar icons. However, it still does not quite fully address what I was hoping to accomplish. I'd like to set an App Tab that has a customized icon, that stays the same in that tab no matter what I do there. Since the navigation within an App Tab is very restricted, the chosen favicon should always be relevant to whatever page is loaded in that tab. The Bookmark Favicon Changer has been effective in allowing me to use a custom favicon in the App Tab. But, the favicon only applies to the specific URL that was bookmarked. Any navigation done from that page will return the favicon to blank. Is there another plugin, or perhaps some special tweak to this plugin or the bookmark itself, that will allow me to make the favicon more persistent across the site?

• Run cmd.exe in Administrator mode without explorer.exe

  I've recently had trouble with explorer.exe not working. I found a possible solution here, using sfc.exe. The problem is that I cannot "right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator", since explorer.exe does not work for even a second without crashing. I tried to use the runas command to open cmd as administrator, but I get an error 1327 because I have a blank password. My question is, is there any other way to run cmd.exe with admin privileges? If not, is there any way to run sfc.exe without admin privileges? If not, does anyone have solution to my original problem of explorer.exe stopping and restarting ad nauseam?

• Can not run ifconfig like commands via browser

  Problem is I cannot run "ifconfig" or similar commands via browser. Environment: Programming language : python Server : lighttpd(CGI) , running on busybox. Well machine is really small and so I am really restricted. Tried techniques: chown every script to root. But there is no differences. Why? Because lighttpd runs under another user, I mean not under root. As it is not root, when I try to run script from browser it always calls the python file with its uid. So it makes it impossible to run "ifconfig eth0 192.168.2.123" like commands via web browser. I get "ifconfig: SIOCSIFADDR: Permission denied" error. What can I do? I do not have any sudoers file, so cannot modify sudo command. Well, I don't even have "sudo" command :) Thanks for your help

• Can only access asp.net app on localhost

  I'm trying to get an asp.net application up on IIS on a Windows Server 2008 machine. I can hit the app from localhost, no problem. But I can't access the app using the server's domain name either locally or from another machine on the network. But here's the odd part. I can access a normal file on IIS using the domain name, both from a browser running on the server and from a browser running on another machine on the network. Here's a synopsis ("http" converted to "htp" below because I don't have enough points to have all these links in my message): From IE on the server itself: works htp://localhost/foo.htm works htp://localhost/App works htp://test.foo.com/foo.htm dead htp://test.foo.com/App From IE on another machine (inside or outside my subnet): works htp://test.foo.com/foo.htm dead htp://test.foo.com/App And when I say "dead" I mean the request times out. Any ideas?

• Run non-interactive script in single user mode

  Is it possible to run a "startup" script when booting into single user mode? I need to be able to boot into single user mode, run my script, then reboot into multiuser mode without any human interaction. I've done a bunch of research and can't find anything that is clear on the topic, although of course I could replace something else that does run with a wrapper that also launches my script, but I'd prefer to do it in some official way. Ideally, the solution will work in FreeBSD 6 and up, but I'm willing to accept only new versions if it just doesn't exist in the older revs.

• cannot at all find sql instance (while installing an asp.net app on IIS)

  So I'm really not a DBA, I'm an app dev. I had to install my asp.net mvc3 app on my client's(a large company) IIS6 + Win2k3 machine, with absolutely no help from their sysadmins. The final problem now is SQL Server 2008 r2, after figuring out how to create a login from windows, my app and sqlcmd.exe always complains it cannot find a sql server instance!! I have all the sql services (in services.msc) running to Log On as the local system. I can login fine with SQL Server Management Studio with Windows Auth. I created my database, my asp.net app needs/uses windows auth. But for the love of God, whatever I do my app always complains it cannot find the instance. (Also tried running SQL CMD and it complains of the same thing too!) My data base connection string looks like this: Data Source=machinename\username;Initial Catalog=myDataStore;Integrated Security=True;MultipleActiveResultSets=True Machinename\user is the same thing that shows up on the sql server management studio login if I choose windows authentication right?

  I have shared folder with an app on win 2008 server. After successful maping of this shared folder from other PC in local network can be open only text files and images. App (.exe) cannot be run. (App works fine, is runing on other server win 2003. Win 2008 is new instalation on new machine.) Is there extra setting to allow it? Loged as administrator Ganted all permission to account in sharing properties (read, write etc.)

• Virtualbox won't run Fedora 10 64 bit iso

  I am using VirtualBox on a Ubuntu 10.04 64bit host. I would like to install a Fedora 64bit guest. When I try to run the 64bit live cd, it says "Automatic boot in 10 seconds..." after which I get a blue background with no menu options. I am familiar with Ubuntu but not Fedora. I have been able to install a Fedora 32 bit system just fine. Any suggestions? I am trying to run an rpm that won't run in Ubuntu even using alien. .

• Windows 2008 startup script will not run?

  I am trying to get a very simple batch script to run when my Windows 2008 Server (R2) system starts up. I have added the script to the "Startup Scripts" in the local group policy by running gpedit.msc, and I see the script listed under Windows Settings/Scripts (Startup/Shutdown)/Startup when I run rsop.msc, but the script is not being executed. The "Last Executed" column in rsop is empty even after a reboot, and a file that should be created by the script is never created. At the moment, the entire contents of the script are: rem Check if this script is running. date /t > c:\temp\flag The target directory (c:\temp) exists. The script is called c:\scripts\startup.bat, and works fine if I run it by hand.

  OS: Fedora 14 GUI: GNOME I need to run an application with another user then the "default" (normally used). Purpose: create a ".desktop" file on my desktop to run e.g.: Google Chrome with another user (NOT ROOT! - so beesu doesn't count.) There aren't any gksu, or kdesu packages in Fedora 14. Why? So i want to create a user with "adduser SOMEONE", and i want to run e.g.: Google Chrome with "SOMEONE" - then it will have minimum permissions, "more security". Thank you!

  How to execute a script once at startup time on CentOS 6.3? I added file with following containment #chkconfig: 2345 95 20 #description: Some description sh /opt/somePath/my.sh into /etc/ini.d and it works fine (I executed required chmod, chkconfig). But my.sh file is compatible to run as service. And when I try to run in same way another .sh file (which can't to tun as service) I get exceptions on starting X. So I want to know how I can run .sh files which are not services. Thanks.

  If I want to use CloudFlare to help protect my GAE app via it's custom domain, I still am vulnerable to attacks directly on the .appspot.com domain. How do I mitigate that? I could force redirect appspot.com host requests, such as discussed here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1364733/block-requests-from-appspot-com-and-force-custom-domain-in-google-app-engine/ But I would still suffer the load of processing the redirect in my app. Are there any other solutions?

• Windows Server 2008 freezes when I run programs as administrator

  I am working on a machine running Windows Server 2008. Every program I have tried to run (firefox, notepad, wordpad) works fine, but if I right-click on any item on the desktop or the start menu and select "Run as Administrator" it freezes. I can move the mouse around and open/close the start menu, but the items in the start menu do not change color when the mouse hovers over them. I googled for answers for some time but had no luck. Does anyone have any ideas that I could try? (Update: I forgot to mention that the machine is virtual and I am using VMWare Workstation. In order to answer the questions below, I have been going to the same snapshot of the system each time. This lets me start the system in the exact same place each time in order to answer your questions and test.) (Update: When I run any process as administrator and it freezes, I can start task manager, but I cannot see the new process (notepad, etc...) )

• Run preseed commands as specific user / switching users

  Beside the usual setup where I create a normal user foo, I want to run a few d-i preseed/late_command commands as that foo user. My initial thought was to simply call those commands with sudo, e.g: d-i preseed/late_command in-target echo "<pwd>" | sudo -Si <command>. This works for some sort of commands. However the problem is that some of the commands load up shell scripts which require to not be run with sudo. Issuing a su -c "<command>" would be an alternative, but su does not offer the possibility to read the password from stdin. Is it safe to jump around between the users using su (And if yes, how do I provide the stdin? and does it work or just result in a su: must be run from a terminal) or would this cause issues?

  I'm sorry if this is the wrong forum for a question like this, but you have to start asking questions somewhere to get anywhere :) The question is pretty simple: I need a server where I can run Java and PHP scripts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I need to be able to access this server via SSH, and I need to be able to retrieve the data generated by scripts using SCP. Also, I need to be able to run 10-20 scripts simultaneously. What is the name of the thing I should be looking for? Is it a dedicated server? I'm confused for 2 reasons: 1) because there seem to be all kinds of servers out there; 2) because most companies advertising dedicated servers seem to be aiming them at people who want to host websites. But I don't want to host a website; I just want to run my code.

• Cannot run a JUnit test case containing threads from Eclipse

  I am running JUnit test case from Eclipse 3.4.1 . This test case creates a class which starts a thread to do some stuff. When the test method ends it seems that Eclipse is forcibly shutting down the thread. If I run the same test from the command line, then the thread runs properly. Somehow I do not remember running into such problems with Eclipse before. Is this something that was always present in Eclipse or did they add it in 3.4.x ? Here is an example: When I run this test from Eclipse, I get a few printts of the cnt (till about 1800) and then the test case is terminated utomatically.   Sometimes when working with SSIS you need to add or change settings in the .NET application configuration file, which can be a bit confusing when you are building a SSIS package not an application. First of all lets review a couple of examples where you may need to do this. You are using referencing an assembly in a Script Task that uses Enterprise Library (aka EntLib), so you need to add the relevant configuration sections and settings, perhaps for the logging application block. You are using using Enterprise Library in a custom task or component, and again you need to add the relevant configuration sections and settings. You are using a web service with Microsoft Web Services Enhancements (WSE) 3.0 and hosting the proxy in SSIS, in an assembly used by your package, and need to add the configuration sections and settings. You need to change behaviours of the .NET framework which can be influenced by a configuration file, such as the System.Net.Mail default SMTP settings. Perhaps you wish to configure System.Net and the httpWebRequest header for parsing unsafe header (useUnsafeHeaderParsing), which will change the way the HTTP Connection manager behaves. You are consuming a WCF service and wish to specify the endpoint in configuration. There are no doubt plenty more examples but each of these requires us to identify the correct configuration file and and make the relevant changes. There are actually several configuration files, each used by a different execution host depending on how you are working with the SSIS package. The folders we need to look in will actually vary depending on the version of SQL Server as well as the processor architecture, but most are all what we can call the Binn folder. The SQL Server 2005 Binn folder is at C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\DTS\Binn\, compared to C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\DTS\Binn\ for SQL Server 2008. If you are on a 64-bit machine then you will see C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\90\DTS\Binn\ for the 32-bit executables and C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\DTS\Binn\ for 64-bit, so be sure to check all relevant locations. Of course SQL Server 2008 may have a C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\100\DTS\Binn\ on a 64-bit machine too. To recap, the version of SQL Server determines if you look in the 90 or 100 sub-folder under SQL Server in Program Files (C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\nn\) . If you are running a 64-bit operating system then you will have two instances program files, C:\Program Files (x86)\ for 32-bit and  C:\Program Files\ for 64-bit. You may wish to check both depending on what you are doing, but this is covered more under each section below. There are a total of five specific configuration files that you may need to change, each one is detailed below: DTExec.exe.config DTExec.exe is the standalone command line tool used for executing SSIS packages, and therefore it is an execution host with an app.config file. e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\DTS\Binn\DTExec.exe.config The file can be found in both the 32-bit and 64-bit Binn folders. DTExecUI.exe.config The DTExec UI tool can also have a configuration file and these cab be found under the Tools folders for SQL Sever as shown below. C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\Binn\VSShell\Common7\IDE\DTExecUI.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Binn\VSShell\Common7\IDE\DTExecUI.exe A configuration file may not exist, but if you can find the matching executable you know you are in the right place so can go ahead and add a new file yourself. In summary we have covered the assembly configuration files for all of the standard methods of building and running a SSIS package, but obviously if you are working programmatically you will need to make the relevant modifications to your program’s app.config as well.

  I'm looking to get into smartphone development, but there a quite a few options out there for platforms right now. (iOS/Android/WebOS/Bada/Symbian/MeeGo/WindowsMobile/JavaME) I'd like to have development hardware to test my code and the overall functionality of the devices. What is the best way to obtain and/or borrow hardware for development and testing? Are there rules of thumb to follow which apply to all companies and platforms? In this situation, I'm a single developer. Does this process change for a startup? A hackerspace? A small business? A large business? Thanks.
