    I am trying to test functionality related to timezone handling/conversion during synchronization between two of my test servers (currently they are running on same mashine). Is it possible to set up hosts so one will be running, say, by London time, and the other by Moscow? Web applications running on both servers are written on Perl.

    I'm interested in installing a custom driver / device that will open a socket (or listen) and stream audio via TCP/IP in both Windows and Linux. I would like to be able to specify this device as my "Output" for specific applications so that I can route my audio through a completely unique machine (for example, in complex Synergy setups where my headphones might be connected to one machine, but audio is being generated by another.) In Linux, I expect this to be very easy, but I anticipate having to install a custom driver in Windows.

  • Windows 7 Task Scheduler Hidden setting doesn't work

    I've got a daemon process that I run on my machine every hour, and even though I've checked the Hidden box, it doesn't work. Every hour, the task runs, but it shows the black command window, in which my .NET Console app is running. This stays visible until the task completes, and then disappears. This is very annoying, because it pops up and interrupts whatever I'm doing: I really do want it hidden, so how can I fix this?

  • Setting up MySQL Linux slave with a Windows master

    I'm running a MySQL 5.0 database server on Windows Server 2008. The total size of the database is about 1Gb. I make daily backups, but I'd like to step up to having a slave server for extra protection. My thinking was that I wouldn't need the expense of a Windows machine to do this, and a Linux "cloud server" from RackSpace would do the job well for quite a low cost. However I have little experience with Linux, so I have a few questions... Does this sound like a good idea? Is there anything wrong with linking Windows and Linux MySQL servers? Does Linux have the equivalent of Remote Desktop Connection? If so can I use this from a Windows machine? Would a particular Linux distro be well suited to this task? RackSpace offer ArchLinux, CentOS, Debian, Fedora and Ubuntu. My immediate thinking is to go with Ubuntu as I've heard it's more friendly for people coming from a Windows background. Any comments you have would be very appreciated! Phil

  • AMD Radeon 7900 series: setting up 3 monitors

    I have an AMD Radeon 7900 series, which should support up to 6 screens. I'm having problems getting my third one working. Im running windows 8, and have installed all the latest AMD drivers. My screens are: Samusng syncmaster S27D391HS Samusng syncmaster S24B350H Samusng syncmaster S24B350H The first 24" monitor I use HDMI to DVI cable. The second 24" I use VGA to DVI cable. Lastly, for the 27" I use HDMI cable. The result is, no matter what I do, I never get more than two screens on simultaneously. I have also tried getting a DisplayPort to HDMI cable to use for the 27", but Im not sure if it was passive or active (didn't say on the box, nor did I ask). So my question is: is an active displayport to HDMI the solution, or is there someting else Im overlooking? (I have read similar posts on this subject, but I use a slightly different combo of cables. That is why I made a post of my own as well)

  • Setting up VPN with Snow Leopard Server and Linksys router

    I'd like to get VPN going so I can log in to the office securely from home. I'm using Snow Leopard machines everywhere, and currently have Airport Extremes set up at home and at the office. I have a mac mini with Snow Leopard Server that I'm going to move to the office to act as my server. I just bought a Linksys 4-port router because it says it does VPN (model RVS4000). My problem is, I don't have a clue how to set this thing up, and the more reading I do, the more confused I get. Do I need two of these routers, one at each end? My laptop and iPad claim they can do VPN, so I was assuming I only needed one VPN router? At this point, I literally don't know what questions to ask, or where to plug this thing in. Presumably, between the modem and the airport, but...? If somebody can walk me thru some really basic setup, I'd be very grateful. Right now, I feel like going outside and screaming for a while. But that might attract the local cougar, and after the prints I saw on the arena this afternoon, I don't want to draw its attention. :-)

    Hi, I set NFS for server-client that works properly. Now I am trying to set NIS server-client on same PC's. I am following the instruction from "SettingUpNISHowTo" from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SettingUpNISHowTo link. But in step-10, "sudo /etc/init.d/nis restart".......it show error fail. If I try to use "ypcat passwd" to check......it shows error YPBINDPROC_DOMAIN: Domain not bound No such map passwd.byname. Reason: Can't bind to server which serves this domain Can anyone able to help me to get rid out from this problem? Is all the step in the document is proper to configure the NIS server?     I have an OS X box running iTunes on it. I play music with iTunes connected to an Apple TV. In iTunes I can select Apple TV as the output sound device. Am I able to do that with any other application? Apple TV does not show up as a seperate device in System Preferences. I'd like to browse and play YouTube videos in my computer and stream their sound to Apple TV.

    Here's the setup, I have an openSUSE box with 2 NICs, one goes to my home network router, the other has DHCP running and it attached to a wireless router. I'm trying to get this setup to work before I switch to the linux box as my home network router. My DHCP will offer the wireless router (a WGR614v7) an address, but anything that connects to the wireless router ends up with a APIPA address. I have all the firewalls on the wireless network turned off as well as the wireless router's own DHCP. The linux box isn't offering addresses to anything past the wireless router. Is this a problem with the router or my DHCP setup? For testing purposes, I have both NICs set in the internal zone and I've tried wireless and wired connections to the WGR614v7 both to no avail.

  • Setting up squid proxy server to in turn connect using another proxy server [closed]

    My institute uses the Squid proxy server and authentication mechanism requires username and password to be entered. This means that, I can log in on only one machine at a time and Internet access for me is restricted to that machine. I sometimes require Internet access on multiple machines simultaneously. What previosuly worked for me was the following : On one of my own machines A, I set up a Squid proxy server that allowed all local machines without any username and password. I configured rest of the machines to use this machine A as the proxy server. On machine A I logged into the institute proxy server using my browser. This way, I could access Internet from all my machines, by effectively channeling my requests through the server A. Recently, I lost that machine and configuration and now I tried to set it up again in the same manner. However, I cant seem to remember exactly how I made it work. I keep getting Connection Refused (111) on other machines. My guess is that my squid server isnt able to forward requests from other machines to the actual squid server. I could use any help for debugging this problem. I don't want to use alternatives such as ssh tunneling. This solution has worked for me in the past, I just don't remember how to set it up the same way again.

    Is there a way to set the DNS Suffix for multiple network adapters in a VM using the sysprep file? We are trying to setup Windows 2003 VMs with 2 network adapters. In the one adapter case the sysprep we are able to set the suffix using DNSDomain. But this doesnt work in the 2 adapter case. The The VM is setup corrently though without any issues but one of our apps relies on the DNS Suffix value to work correctly. Thanks in advance.

    I have a Lenovo T400 laptop with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series video card, using the ATI Catalyst Control Center to span my Windows XP display over the laptop display and a Dell flatpanel LCD. This works fine, but I'm used to NVIDIA multi-desktop that let me control the "Start bar" to either exist on only 1 screen... be duplicated on both, or (what I want), stretched across both. Is this possible with the ATI card/Catalyst Software? If not, are there any utilities out there that will handle this for me?     I'm using VirtualBox on Windows 7 (host) to run a FreeBSD (guest) based web server. I`ve assigned a static ip of 192.168.80. 1 to the (virtualized) NIC which is run in bridged mode. The problem is that when I ping an external server (such as google.com) I get a No route to host error: dimetro# ping google.com PING google.com (66.249.90.104): 56 data bytes ping: sendto: No route to host ... I can ping the BSD server from both another virtualized machine and my host machine and from the server, I can ping everything on the network. The router ip is 192.168.1.1/16. ADDENDUM: I have the following lines in /etc/rc.conf on the BSD VM to configure networking: defaultrouter="192.168.1.1" ifconfig_em0="inet 192.168.80.1 netmask 255.255.0.0"

  • Setting up a lab with Windows 2003 server and windows 7 clients

    We are overhauling a lab with new machines with Windows 7 (as clients - around 150 of them). In the current infrastructure we have students logging in using a generic student id (as having individual student accounts doesn't really serve any additional purpose). This account, as you would imagine is a locked down one that can run a few (age old) softwares required by students in the class. Currently, the individual machines have XP images created by BartPE. What should be an ideal infrastructure design to cater to such a need with Windows Server 2003 and Windows 7 clients? It would be great if you can give me pointers to what concepts and background I need to have (like GPO), any design guidelines, best practices?
