• Are tags considered requirements? [closed]

  I'm new to stack overflow, made a few responses. I responded to a question that was something like: "I need to do X, I found a sed one liner that almost does it, but not quite" And was tagged 'sed'. I assumed the user just wanted a solution and tagged it with sed because it was a possible answer. So I suggested an alternate way using another tool that was more concise and didn't involve regex (another one-liner). I received a down vote for not meeting the requirement of the user. Since I'd like to make sure I conform to good forum etiquette, my question is: Are tags considered hard requirements that should limit the scope of responses? (within reason of course, a .NET question with a .NET tag obviously shouldn't receive a ruby answer).

Doesn't that the value of 'x' in a() should be 'gone' as soon as test = new a() is complete? The stack contains x should also be gone as well, right? Or, does javascript always keep all the stacks ever created in case they will be referenced in future? But that wouldn't be nice, would it...?

• Stacking Dialogs in Android

  Is there a way to control the relative stacking of Dialogs produced by your own Activity? For instance, there are some more important Dialogs which I would like to ensure are on top and if another Dialog wants to pop up I would want it to pop under the important Dialogs. Example: I want to present to the user an important dialog, Dialog A. The activity realizes that there is a dialog, Dialog B, of lesser importance to display to the user. Is it possible to specify Dialog B to be under Dialog A so that when Dialog A is cleared, Dialog B will be seen by the user? I know that the onDismiss interface exists, but this necessarily ties Dialog A and Dialog B together. I want the Dialogs to be independent and would prefer to use a higher level abstraction like the window stack responsible for ordering the Dialogs.

• Are destructors of automatic objects invoked when terminate is called?

  I'm pondering a question on Brainbench. I actually realised that I could answer my question easily by compiling the code, but it's an interesting question nonetheless, so I'll ask the question anyway and answer it myself shortly. Take a look at this snippet: The question considers what happens when we throw from a destructor (which causes terminate() to be called). It's become clear to me by asking the question that the memory is indeed freed and the destructor is called, but, is this before or after throw is called from foo? Perhaps the issue here is that throw is used while the stack is unwinding that is the problem... Actually this is slightly confusing.

• PHP Mail() not working on remote server

  I am developing an application and have been testing the mail() function in PHP. The following works just fine on my local machine to send emails to myself, but as soon as I try to send it from the testing environment to my local machine, it silently fails. I will still get the "Mail Sent" message, but no message is sent. I turned on the mail logging in the php.ini file, but even that doesn't seem to be populated after I refresh the page. Again, the .php files and php.ini files are identical in both environments.   I still feel a bit unsafe about the topic and hope you folks can help me - For passing data (configuration or results) between a worker thread polling something and a controlling thread interested in the most recent data, I've ended up using more or less the following pattern repeatedly: Mutex m; tData * stage; // temporary, accessed concurrently // send data, gives up ownership, receives old stage if any tData * Send(tData * newData) { ScopedLock lock(m); swap(newData, stage); return newData; } // receiving thread fetches latest data here tData * Fetch(tData * prev) { ScopedLock lock(m); if (stage != 0) { // ... release prev prev = stage; stage = 0; } return prev; // now current } Note: This is not supposed to be a full producer-consumer queue, only the msot recent data is relevant. Also, I've skimmed ressource management somewhat here. When necessary I'm using two such stages: one to send config changes to the worker, and for sending back results. Now, my questions assuming that ScopedLock implements a full memory barrier: do stage and/or workerData need to be volatile? is volatile necessary for tData members? can I use smart pointers instead of the raw pointers - say boost::shared_ptr? Anything else that can go wrong? I am basically trying to avoid "volatile infection" spreading into tData, and minimize lock contention (a lock free implementation seems possible, too). However, I'm not sure if this is the easiest solution. ScopedLock acts as a full memory barrier. Since all this is more or less platform dependent, let's say Visual C++ x86 or x64, though differences/notes for other platforms are welcome, too. (a prelimenary "thanks but" for recommending libraries such as Intel TBB - I am trying to understand the platform issues here)

  Hi all, I'm looking for the right messaging system for my needs. Can you help me ? For now, there won't be a huge amount of data to process, but I don't want to be limited later ... The machines are not just web servers, so the messaging tool should be lightweight, even if processing is not very speed. When some data change on a server, all servers should have the information and process it locally. (should I create one channel per server on each of them ?) The frontend is written on Rails, so it is important, in order to simplify the development, that there is a gem / plugin to manage communications and data sent. At this time : RabbitMQ + workling seems to fit my needs. Could this be a right choice ? ActiveMQ make me afraid, because of Java (I really don't know very well Java, but it seems to me to be big CPU consumer) Others don't seem to be as mature as them.   Hello: Without using p/invoke, from a C++/CLI I have succeeded in integrating various methods of a DLL library from a third party built in C. One of these methods retrieves information from a database and stores it in different structures. The C++/CLI program I wrote reads those structures and stores them in a List<, which is then returned to the corresponding reading and use of an application programmed completely in C#. I understand that the double handling of data (first, filling in several structures and then, filling all of these structures into a list<) may generate an unnecessary overload, at which point I wish C++/CLI had the keyword "yield". Depending on the above scenario, do you have recommendations to avoid or reduce this overload? Thanks.

  I am having a Java application running in a Tomcat server using Spring, Hibernate, etc. and a two web interfaces, one implemented in Tapestry 5 and the other one using Flex with BlazeDS and Spring-BlazeDS. In my first android application I would now like to log in to the server and retrieve some data. I´m wondering how I could achieve this in a secure way. First of all I need to know which technology is the best to retrieve data from the server and how can I restrict the access to users only that have been successfully authenticated. With what I read until now I would try to implement a HTTPServlet on the server and make server calls via HTTP Client. In the servlet I could probably use the HTTPSession to check if the request comes from an authenticated user. And the data I would try to send serialized (JSON). Unfortunately, I´ve never done those things and maybe I´m on the wrong way and there are more comfortable solutions.
