• Does Ruby on Rails "has_many" array provide data on a "need to know" basis?

  On Ruby on Rails, say, if the Actor model object is Tom Hanks, and the "has_many" fans is 20,000 Fan objects, then actor.fans gives an Array with 20,000 elements. Probably, the elements are not pre-populated with values? Otherwise, getting each Actor object from the DB can be extremely time consuming. So it is on a "need to know" basis? So does it pull data when I access actor.fans[500], and pull data when I access actor.fans[0]? If it jumps from each record to record, then it won't be able to optimize performance by doing sequential read, which can be faster on the hard disk because those records could be in the nearby sector / platter layer -- for example, if the program touches 2 random elements, then it will be faster just to read those 2 records, but what if it touches all elements in random order, then it may be faster just to read all records in a sequential way, and then process the random elements. But how will RoR know whether I am doing only a few random elements or all elements in random?

• Best way to store 3 pieces of data as a single entry

  For a game server, I want to record details when a player makes a kill, store this, and then at intervals update to a sql database. The part i'm interested in right now is the best method of storing the kill information. What i'd like to pass to the sql server on update would be {PlayerName, Kills, Deaths}, where the kills and deaths are a sum for the period between updates. So i'm assuming i'd build a list along the lines of {bob, 1, 0} {frank, 0, 1} {tom, 1, 0} {frank, 0, 1} then on update, consolidate the list to {frank, 14, 3}etc Can someone offer some advice please?

What does it mean (especially what means "breaking old implementations of the class")? • correct approach to store in database

  I'm developing an online website (using Django and Mysql). I have a Tests table and User table. I have 50 tests within the table and each user completes them at their own pace. How do I store the status of the tests in my DB? One idea that came to my mind is to create an additional column in User table. That column containing testid's separated by comma or any other delimiter. userid | username | testscompleted 1 john 1, 5, 34 2 tom 1, 10, 23, 25 Another idea was to create a seperate table to store userid and testid. So, I'll have only 2 columns but thousands of rows (no of tests * no of users) and they will always continue to increase. userid | testid 1 1 1 5 2 1 1 34 2 10

• How to prevent autoplay and run my own app when inserting an USB-Flash drive

  when inserting an USB-Flash drive, Windows normally opens the Autoplay dialog that offers to browse the drive or if there are multimedia files it offers to choose an app to open them. We developed a media player that is connected to the USB-Drive and registers itself as Mass Storage Device. What I need is, that when inserting the Player that this Dialog is not shown, but instead my own application is launched. Ideally the application would be on the Flash Drive itself, but as I understood is that Autorun is disabled for USB-Drives. It would be enough if a preinstalled application is launched. I already tried to catch the WM_DRIVE_CHANGE message, but this only works if my application is the top most window, otherwise the Autoplay Dialog is displayed. Best Tom

  Hi there, I've accidentally copied a large part of a folder tree from my SVN working copy to my shared Windows web host via FTP. The site is now littered with .svn directories and and I need some way of cleaning them. The only access I have to the server is via FTP, or by running a script on the server. Does any one have a script which can be run remotely to remove the files over FTP from my development machine (any language Windows/Linux is fine) or a script in ASP, ASP.net or PHP I can run directly on the Windows server to remove these directories?   I've got the following query: select distinct a.id, a.name from Employee a join Dependencies b on a.id = b.eid where not exists ( select * from Dependencies d where b.id = d.id and d.name = 'Apple' ) and exists ( select * from Dependencies c where b.id = c.id and c.name = 'Orange' ); I have two tables, relatively simple. The first Employee has an id column and a name column The second table Dependencies has 3 column, an id, an eid (employee id to link) and names (apple, orange etc). the data looks like this Employee table looks like this id | name ----------- 1 | Pat 2 | Tom 3 | Rob 4 | Sam Dependencies id | eid | Name -------------------- 1 | 1 | Orange 2 | 1 | Apple 3 | 2 | Strawberry 4 | 2 | Apple 5 | 3 | Orange 6 | 3 | Banana As you can see Pat has both Orange and Apple and he needs to be excluded and it has to be via joins and i can't seem to get it to work.   Hi, I'm using Python on Appengine and am looking up the geolocation of an IP address like this: import pygeoip gi = pygeoip.GeoIP('GeoIP.dat') Location = gi.country_code_by_addr(self.request.remote_addr) (pygeoip can be found here: http://code.google.com/p/pygeoip/) I want to geolocate each page of my app for a user so currently I lookup the IP address once then store it in memcache. My question - which is quicker? Looking up the IP address each time from the .dat file or fetching it from memcache? Are there any other pros/cons I need to be aware of? For general queries like this, is there a good guide to teach me how to optimise my code and run speed tests myself? I'm new to python and coding in general so apologies if this is a basic concept. The keys (key names) can be disregarded: [24, 23, 33, 12, 31] The order of the values is NOT important! One solution (obviously) would be do have a function that takes the values and puts them into an array: var arr = valuesToArray(obj); I will accept such a function as the answer. However, I would be more pleased if there would be an API function (ECMAScript, jQuery, browser-specific, ...) that could do this. Is there such a thing?

  I created a working QListWidget with multiple items, but I can't figure out how to make it user-friendly. It looks like this: 1000 1001 1002 ... But I want it to look like this, where firt 4 numbers have a meaning, while all the rest info is just for user. 1000 Name LastName and some other helpful info 1001 tom jeff smallville 1002 ming vase, 1992 ... For example, this line fotoId = ui->devices->currentItem()->text().toInt(); should give me same result in both cases.

• JSONP parsing error from WCF

  Answered my own question I had a problem with a jquery (jsonp) call to a WCF service that was throwing a json parsing error. Using ASP.NET 4.0 on the WCF side and jquery 1.7 on the client side. Turned out there was an old set of script tags on the page using language = VBSCRIPT. The browser was interpreting the returned json packet of script as "VBscript" instead of javascript. I placed a set of empty javascript tags at the top of the page and the browser is now interpreting the json as the proper javascript function. Hope this helps someone else. Tom

• Can I Use EF Across Multiple DBs in One SQLServer Instance?

  Hello, I have been searching the blogs and articles but I have not found much support for this scenario. I have been poking around EF and realized that I could create views that contained data from multiple databases and then build the EF object model off of those views. Although it works I am not sure about the usual issues of performance, scalability, maintainability. The way I am achieving the connection between databases is by creating associations in the EF model. Does anyone have any information about this type of implementation? Either another solution or commentary on this proposed solution? Thanks, Tom

  JMaghreb is the inaugural Java conference organized by Morocco JUG. It is the biggest Java conference in Maghreb (5 countries in North West Africa). Oracle was the exclusive platinum sponsor with several others. The registrations had to be closed at 1412 for the free conference and several folks were already on the waiting list. Rabat with 531 registrations and Casablanca with 426 were the top cities. Some statistics ... 850+ attendees over 2 days, 500+ every day 30 sessions were delivered by 18 speakers from 10 different countries 10 sessions in French and 20 in English 6 of the speakers spoke at JavaOne 2012 8 will be at Devoxx Attendees from 5 different countries and 57 cities in Morocco 40.9% qualified them as professional and rest as students Topics ranged from HTML5, Java EE 7, ADF, JavaFX, MySQL, JCP, Vaadin, Android, Community, JCP Java EE 6 hands-on lab was sold out within 7 minutes and JavaFX in 12 minutes I gave the keynote along with Simon Ritter which was basically a recap of the Strategy and Technical keynotes presented at JavaOne 2012. An informal survey during the keynote showed the following numbers: 25% using NetBeans, 90% on Eclipse, 3 on JDeveloper, 1 on IntelliJ About 10 subscribers to free online Java magazine. This digital magazine is a comprehensive source of information for everything Java - subscribe for free!! About 10-15% using Java SE 7. Download JDK 7 and get started today! Even JDK 8 builds have been available for a while now. My second talk explained the core concepts of WebSocket and how JSR 356 is providing a standard API to build WebSocket-driven applications in Java EE 7. TOTD #183 explains how you can easily get started with WebSocket in GlassFish 4. The complete slide deck is available: Next day started with a community keynote by Sonya Barry. Some of us live the life of JCP, JSR, EG, EC, RI, etc every day, but not every body is. To address that, Sonya prepared an excellent introductory presentation providing an explanation of these terms and how java.net infrastructure supports Java development. The registration for the lab showed there is a definite demand for these technologies in this part of the world. I delivered the Java EE 6 hands-on lab to a packed room of about 120 attendees. Most of the attendees were able to progress and follow the lab instructions. Some of the attendees did not have a laptop but were taking extensive notes on paper notepads. Several attendees were already using Java EE 6 in their projects and typically they are the ones asking deep dive questions. Also gave out three copies of my recently released Java EE 6 Pocket Guide and new GlassFish t-shirts. Definitely feels happy to coach ~120 more Java developers learn standards-based enterprise Java programming. I also participated in a JCP BoF along with Werner, Sonya, and Badr. Visit to Kasbah of the Udayas, Hassan II (one of the tallest mosque in the world), and eating in a restaurant in a kasbah are some of the exciting local experiences. • The 2010 Life Insurance Conference - Washington, DC

  How ironic to be in Washington, DC on April 15 - TAX DAY! Fortunately, I avoided IRS offices and attended the much more enjoyable 2010 Life Insurance Conference, presented by LIMRA, LOMA SOA and ACLI. This year's conference offered a variety of tracks focused on the Life Industry including Distribution/Marketing Marketing, Administration, Actuarial/Product Development, Regulatory, Reinsurance and Strategic Management. President and CEO of the ACLI, Frank Keating, opened the event by moderating a session titled "Executive Viewpoint on new Opportunities." Guest speakers included Ted Mathas, President and CEO of NY Life, and John Walters, President and CEO of Hartford Life. Both speakers were insightful as they shared the challenges and opportunities each company faces and the key role life insurance companies play in our society and the global economy. There were several key themes that were reiterated in multiple sessions throughout the conference - the economy is on the rebound, optimism is growing, consumer spending is up and an uptick in employment is likely to follow. The threat of a double dip recession has seemed to passed. Good news for our industry, and welcomed by all in attendance. Of special interest to me, given my background, was some research shared by both The Nolan Group and Novarica in separate sessions. Both firms indicate that policy administration upgrades/replacement projects remain a top priority in 2010. Carriers continue to invest in modern technology. Modern ultra-configurable systems enable carriers to switch from a waterfall to an agile project methodology, which often entails a "culture change" within an organization. Other themes heard throughout the two-day event: Virtually all sessions focused on People, Process and Technology! Product innovation, agility and speed to market are as important as ever. Social Networks and Twitter are becoming more popular ways of communicating with both field and dispersed staff. Several sessions focused on the application, new business and underwriting process. Companies continue looking for ways to increase market agility, accelerate speed to market, address cost issues and improve service levels across the process. They recognize the need to ease the way to do business with both producers and consumers. Author and economic futurist Jeff Thredgold presented an entertaining, informative and humorous general session on Wednesday afternoon that focused on the US and global economies, financial markets and retirement outlook. Thredgold did not disappoint anyone with his message! The Thursday morning general session was keynoted by Therese Vaughan (CEO - NAIC) and Thomas Crawford (President of C2 Group). Both speakers gave a poignant view of the recent financial crisis and discussed "Putting the Pieces Back Together." Therese spoke of the recent financial turmoil and likely changes to regulations to the financial services sector. Tom's topics focused on economic recovery and the political environment in Washington, and how that impacts our industry. Next year's event will be April 11-13, 2011 in Las Vegas.
