    Performance tuning is an interesting concept and everybody evaluates it differently. Every developer and DBA have different opinion about how one can do performance tuning. I personally believe performance tuning is a three step process Understanding the Query Identifying the Bottleneck Implementing the Fix While, we are working with large database application and it suddenly starts to slow down. We are all under stress about how we can get back the database back to normal speed. Most of the time we do not have enough time to do deep analysis of what is going wrong as well what will fix the problem. Our primary goal at that time is to just fix the database problem as fast as we can. However, here is one very important thing which we need to keep in our mind is that when we do quick fix, it should not create any further issue with other parts of the system. When time is essence and we want to do deep analysis of our system to give us the best solution we often tend to make mistakes. Sometimes we make mistakes as we do not have proper time to analysis the entire system. Here is what I do when I face such a situation – I take the help of DB Optimizer. It is a fantastic tool and does superlative performance tuning of the system. Everytime when I talk about performance tuning tool, the initial reaction of the people is that they do not want to try this as they believe it requires lots of the learning of the tool before they use it. It is absolutely not true with the case of the DB optimizer. It is a very easy to use and self intuitive tool. Once can get going with the product, in no time. Here is a quick video I have build where I demonstrate how we can identify what index is missing for query and how we can quickly create the index.   • Changing Focus on my Blog

    I try to limit these types of blog posts – the ones where I communicate some change as if I have a loyal subscriber base that will be somehow affected. Still, I think its of worth if for nothing else than to document for myself an acknowledgement that my career is evolving. For the last who knows how long, I’ve had this as my banner: It’s funny how technology focuses change over time. 3.5 – 4 years ago I was wanting to immerse myself in BizTalk. Then I shifted, focussing on Silverlight. I even started a short-lived Silverlight user group here in Winnipeg that had, IMO, one of the *best* UG logos ever (do a Google search for the old school Winnipeg Jets logo if you don’t catch the reference)… And even how I identified myself – as a Developer – isn’t really accurate anymore as I’ve shifted more into an architect/analyst role at Online Business Systems as well as getting much more involved in business development. So I’m switching the focus of this blog a bit. Nothing too great, but you’ll find my posts aren’t necessarily tied to a technology or platform. Instead I’ll be focussing on current passions and interests. Solution Architecture Before a line of code is written, a solution is envisioned. The process of performing solution analysis and architecture is an intriguing process that encompasses negotiation and interpersonal skills as much as technical knowledge. Business & Entrepreneurship Creating things, building things, and working with others – business is fascinating and exciting! Entrepreneurship, and intrapreneurship, are growing trends that I’ve been exploring over the last few years through my conference (www.prairiedevcon.com) and within Online. Microsoft At Online one of my roles is “Microsoft Practice Lead” and my entire career has been built around the Microsoft stack of technologies. That focus won’t change here on my blog, and there’s tonnes of exciting new products and technologies coming out of Redmond. Adoption This is a very personal subject that’s extremely close to my heart. I’m not talking about technology adoption, I’m talking about human adoption. Almost three years ago we adopted our first daughter, Sadie, and two years ago we adopted our second daughter, Skylar; an amazing new chapter in my life as I became a “parent”. Adoption is very much misunderstood, and many people have questions about it. Hopefully I can shed some light into our experiences and provide some guidance for those that are looking into it.   • A Database and LDAP Ice Breaker Video

    I made another GoAnimate video - this time it's about using LDAP for database passwords. Since it's on the free site - I didn't want to violate any terms of agreement - so it doesn't mention Oracle explicitly. But if you wanted to actually do what the animation talks about with Oracle database - you need to configure the Oracle database to use Oracle Enterprise User Security. EUS requires OVD or OID and works with most popular LDAP servers including Active Directory and of course our newest Oracle Directory member - Directory Server Enterprise Edition (aka the former Sun directory).   • Flash 10.2 RC + Crystal HD for HW accelerated video on Ubuntu

    I have a netbook with a N450 Atom and a BCM70012 aka Crystal HD card. On Windows 7 I can play HD flash video with very little CPU usage because of the RC of Flash 10.2. I did some reading and saw posts claiming that the Crystal HD card is finally supported by the newer Flash 10.2 RC in Ubuntu but I can't get it to work. I can confirm that flash 10.2 is loaded and used, and there's even a HW acceleration option that is enabled in the settings but performance is horrible. From what I read, the Crystal HD card is supposed to be enabled on 10.10 by default - I don't know if it is. I tried installing drivers for it in various ways but HD flash video is still a slideshow So does anyone have it working? If so, how'd you set it up?

    I am trying to find the option that sets, for the whole system the default Web Browser, Mail Client, Video Player and Music Player instead of having to do it for each type of file. I knew where the option was in 11.04 but somehow I can not find it again. Just to not get anymore confused I am not talking about right clicking a file then changing the "Open With" to the one I want. The option I am looking for affects everything in general, so if I change, for example, the default video player to VLC, all movies will be watched with VLC. I am using Unity.

    I was looking at this post How to create a screencast? which mentions some of the Video Recorders (Screencast) that I was looking for but some of them are more than 8 months old with not one single update made to them. Am looking for a Screencast that is at least update recently and that I know that if I keep using it I could count on it being updated. The most important part is video recording but sound is good too. Maybe a windows area, mouse tracking, etc.. But it needs to be up to date and not abandoned or very old. And of course that works in 11.10 and has in mind to work in 12.04.

    I've had a Wordpress.com weblog for 3 years. And its pages have a good pagerank and are shown in first search results pages. Because of the limitations, I should migrate to my own WordPress. How to migrate safely with the minimum SEO problems? (I know how to export content in wordpress.com and import it to a new wordpress.org blog.) Note 1: links structure and site design are different on the new wordpress blog. (I don't like wordpress.com links structure :| ) Note 2: as you know, it's not possible to edit .htaccess file on wordpress.com. so I can't use 301 redirects.

  • Video recording in cheese is slow

    cheese records at painful fps. video recording is really slow in cheese almost unusable. How can I increase the fps for cheese. I have HCL laptop with built in 1.3 MP camera 2.47 GHz i3 processor with 2 GB RAM. running maverick 32 bit. I installed camorama from software centre which has fine video (fps), but I cant seem to use it due to some error. So I doubt there is something to be tweaked with cheese itself.

  • Video capture Performance

    I have noticed high CPU utilization in a number of applications (except mplayer) which read from the embedded webcam on my laptop. Bizarrely CPU utilization varies proportionately to the level of illumination present. I know that that high CPU usage has nothing to do with rendering the video, as I have written a simple app using the OpenCV library to simply grab frames from the webcam, and cpu usage is still high. I think that mplayer might be using my GPU (and the other apps aren't), but since its not an issue with rendering, I dont think this explains anything. Cheese Low light --- ~12% CPU Bright Light ---- ~63% CPU Camorama Low light --- ~7% CPU Bright Light ---- ~30% CPU Opencv C++ library, (display in a single highgui window) Low light --- ~13% CPU Bright Light ---- ~40% CPU (same test on windows 7, 4-9%) Mplayer No problem, 1-2% regardless of light levels Note: If all I want't to do is capture a feed from my webcam I would use mplayer and forget about it, but I'm developing an application which uses the OpenCV to capture a video feed among other things, performance is important.
