  • dynamic web reference for use in SSRS

    To use the web service that is part of an SSRS installation, it seems that you need to add a web reference to your project so that you can call it etc (see one of my previous questions). But if I needed to call the web service for different SSRS installations then i need to keep adding extra web references. My asp.net application currently displays reports from several different SSRS installations, not just a single server... Is there a way to either dynamically add the web reference or to dynamically change the server address of where the web service is located?

    I have found a couple of related questions here on programmers.SE: How/where would I best advertise my open source project, in order to maximize my odds of finding collaborators? Where to find open source volunteers? My question is slightly different because I am primarily looking for non-coders to help with a few things in my new open source project. In particular, I'd like one or more people to create an icon and other graphics and to work on a web site, wiki pages, and/or other documentation. My project is a front-end for a baseball card database. So reaching out to baseball card collectors might be useful. Other than that, I would just like anyone who would like to contribute in small ways to a modest project. Where are some good places to advertise and find non-coder volunteers?

  • Implementing the NetBeans Project API on Maven in IntelliJ IDEA

    James McGivern, one of the speakers I met at JAX London, is creating media software on the NetBeans Platform. However, he's using Maven and IntelliJ IDEA and one of the features he needs is project support, i.e., the project infrastructure that's part of NetBeans IDE. However, an additional step of complexity is added when IntelliJ IDEA is included into the mix and therefore I created the following screencast which, in 15 minutes, puts all the pieces together. Be aware that I'm probably not using IntelliJ IDEA and Maven as optimally as I could and I'm publishing this at least partly so that the errors of my ways can be pointed out to me.   • Permission error while trying to access Sql from a web method

    I created a web service which has a few web methods which inturn performs inserts/updates/select from a Sql Server and return non-primitive types. To test the web methods I tried using the Open source tool .net web service studio When I test for the web methods, I get the following error - Request for the permission of type 'System.Data.SqlClient.SqlClientPermission, System.Data, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed. I searched for solutions and I tried a lot of approaches like setting up the permission levels, the trust level in config file etc. But the error still persists. Can anyone tell me what could be the reason for this error? I have tried toggling the permissions at all levels - Sql Server, web service etc. How can I fix this error?

What I have to check for last time until I went online? (Yeah, Facebook Facebook. Facebook don't have that community sense. You cannot find all your department mates on Facebook.   • Changing jobs and leaving a project without a leader (aka, me)

    I'm the lead on a project that has been underway for about a year and a half. Two of us have been working on it. One is the database guy. I'm the javascript/ui guy. Which is to say, essentially no overlap in code knowledge. Here's the thing. Someone is about to offer me a sweet job with a nearly 30% bump in pay. Though I am perfectly happy with my current job and love the project, the new one would be better and I can't imagine saying no. The big problem is that my project is supposed to go into production starting in a few weeks. I will consider the new guys to have disqualified the new job by being bad people who would ruin my life if they won't cooperate and let me start after deployment. Since they seem like decent, ethical people, I don't expect that to be a problem. The current project will be brutalized by my absence. I take some comfort in the fact that I have emphatically requested an understudy for at least six months. That puts a little of the responsibility on the boss's head, but still, it's going to be a really bad thing. What do others of you do when you are a critical to a project when it's time to move on? Do I owe any obligation to stick around even though something better shows up? I know my spouse would object if I found someone else. Does that apply to work? I do have an understudy now, though he's fresh out of college. He's not going to replace me anytime soon. It's a small shop and the boss is going to be crushed. I am traumatized in anticipation of telling him and feel guilty about the practical consequences. I'm looking for some solace and some strategy about how to deal with this transition. I will insist on a compromise where I finish the current sprint (about a month from now) but there is at least a half year, probably a year of solid, full-time, work still to be done.     Currently I'm developing an application with quickly which is divided in two parts: A graphical UI where the user could configure some things, and a daemon which do the most work in the background. I started with the UI, to create some windows for settings and so on. Now I want to start coding the daemon, but I have no clue how to implement the daemon in my quickly project. Could I simply paste the files of the daemon in project folder or is there an implementation method for adding new files to a quickly project? Or do I have to create a new project and merge them together?

  • Running my web site in a 32-bit application pool on a 64-bit OS.

    Here is my setup: Dev: - Windows Server 2008 64-bit - Visual Studio 2008 - Solution with 3 class libraries, 1 web application Staging Web Server: - Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit - IIS7.5 Integrated Application Pool with 32-bit Applications Enabled In Visual Studio I have set all 4 of my projects to compile to 'Any CPU' but when I run this web application on the web server with the 32-bit application pool it times out and crashes. When I run the application pool in 64-bit mode it works fine. The production web server requires me to run 32-bit application pool in 64-bit OS which is why I have this configured in this way on the staging web server. (I considered posting on ServerFault but the server part seems to be working fine. It is my code specifically that doesn't seem to want to run in 32-bit application pool which is why I am posting here.)

  • How do I temporarily reference a new web host using my existing domain name?

    On provider A I have an existing web hosting account running my site. On provider B I have my domain name registered pointing to the web hosting on provider A. I've just purchased a web hosting account with provider B and want to move my site there. Is there a way to temporarily use my domain name to point to provider B while I set up the site (e.g. just from my computer)? I tried to change the HOSTS file (Windows) and while pings resolved to what I set, HTTP requests don't.

    Hello, I need to find a very compact, cross-platform web server that can run Lua scripts, ie. either a regular web server like Mongoose that will forward queries to a Lua program in eg. FastCGI, or a web server itself written in Lua which will save the need to provide a separate web server. I recently started learning about Lua so am still in the dark about what is available out there, save for the three I came accross: Barracuda Embedded Web Server http://barracudaserver.com/ba/doc/ Xavante - Lua HTTP 1.1 Web server http://keplerproject.github.com/xavante/ Haserl http://haserl.sourceforge.net/ If someone's already done this recently, what solution would you recommend along with any tutorial/article that would get me started? What are the best techniques for forking a project whilst still maintaining the ability to merge future changes from the original project into your own forked repository using Git?   • Web hosting announced downtime and how it affects FORWARD domain names?

    Our web hosting provider that holds our FORWARD domain names announced that at some point in the next couple weeks they will be migrating servers and that this will cause a 5-10 minute downtime at some point in that week during what happens to be our core business hours. They cite for technical reasons it is impossible to give an exact date or time when this downtime will occur. My questions are: If my domains are set to FORWARD to a static IP on servers not hosted by the web hosting provider in question then will this affect the DNS servers correctly routing to my website? Are their legitimate technical reasons for such a wide window of time, or could this just be a blanket statement to cover laziness in not being more organized with their server migrations? Are such downtimes normal for web hosting providers, or should I start to consider other providers?

  • Unit testing class in a web service in .net

    After some digging here, I took the advice in this thread: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/371961/how-to-unit-test-c-web-service-with-visual-studio-2008 I've created a separate class and my web service class is just a wrapper for that one. The problem is that when I try to create a unit test project in VS2008, it insists on creating a unit test that acts like I'm testing the web service calls instead of the class I specified. I can't get to the class I'm trying to test. I have a web service "subscription_api.asmx". The code behind is "subscription_api.cs" which contains the web method wrapper calls to the real code at "subscription.cs". I would expect to be able to do the following: [TestMethod()] public void GetSystemStatusTest() { subscription sub = new subscription(); XmlNode node = sub.GetSystemStatusTest(); Assert.IsNotNull(node); } But instead I get this mess which is autogenerated from VS'08: /// <summary> ///A test for GetSystemStatus ///</summary> // TODO: Ensure that the UrlToTest attribute specifies a URL to an ASP.NET page (for example, // http://.../Default.aspx).     Hello, Im doing a project with C# winforms. This project is composed by: Client project: Windows Forms where user will do CRUD operations on the models; Server project; Common Project: This project will hold the models (in the image only have the model Item); ListSingleton: Remote Object that will do the operations on the models; I already have all the communication working, but now I need to work on the persistence of the data in a mysql database. I was trying to use nHibernate but I’m having some troubles. My main problem is how to organize my hibernate configuration. In which project do I keep the mapping? Common project? In which project do I keep the hibernate configuration file (App.config)? ListSingleton project? In which project do I do this: Configuration cfg = new Configuration(); cfg.AddXmlFile("Item.hbm.xml"); ISessionFactory factory = cfg.BuildSessionFactory(); ISession session = factory.OpenSession(); ITransaction transaction = session.BeginTransaction(); Item newItem = new Item("BLAA"); // Tell NHibernate that this object should be saved session.Save(newItem); // commit all of the changes to the DB and close the ISession transaction.Commit(); session.Close(); In the ListSingleton project? Altho I had reference to the Common Project in the ListSingleton I keep getting error in the addXml line… My mapping is correct because I tried with a one-project solution and it worked :X

  • How to encourage domain experts familiar only with C into a C++ opensource project [closed]

I am launching an open-source project into a space where a lot of development is done Linux-kernel-style, i.e. C-language with a low-level mindset. My project is broad and complex and uses aspects of the C++ language and libraries, including the Boost library to best effect for simple, slightly syntactically sweetened, elegant and well structured high level code. We are using C++ templates too to avoid duplication of code and for static polymorphism in code specialisation for performance. Many of the experts in this field are well used to pure C-language projects. How can I persuade them to contribute to my idiomatic C++ based project? I have no objection to C-language subcomponents or the use of a C-like subset for parts of the project so that might be part of the answer. This is a rewritten and retagged rehash of my previous question that was closed. Apologies to those who read and answered for it not being constructive. I hope this new question is viewed as constructive. Please note that this is not a language advocacy question and please keep answers in that spirit.

I was quite disappointed with it because I thought the project was going well and I had already explained the limitations that the software would have due to the time constraints. I have decided that I will now look for a new job, but I am worried the project ending badly may give me some difficulties.   • Web UI element to represent two different micro-views of data in the same spot?

    I've been tasked with laying out a portion of a screen for a customer care (call center) app that serves as sort of a header/summary block at the top of the screen. Here's what it looks like: The important part is in the red box. That little tooltip is the biz's vision for how to represent both the numeric SiteId and the textual Site Name all in the same piece of screen real estate. I asked, and the business thinks the Name is more important than the ID, but lists the Id by default, because the Name can't be truncated in the display, and there's only so much horizontal room to put the data. So they go with the Id, because it's fewer characters, and then they have the user mouse-over the Id to display the name (presumably because the tooltip can be of unlimited width and since it's floating over the rest of the screen, the full name will always be displayed. So, here's my question: Is there some better UI metaphor that I don't know about that could get this job done, while meeting the following constraints?: Does not require the mouse (uses a keyboard shortcut to do the "reveal") Allows the user to copy and paste the name Will not truncate the name Provides for the display of both the ID and name in the same spot Works with IE7

    Hi all, I have a java project in Eclipse which includes a couple of external jar files. These external jar files are being rebuilt through a different process (not eclipse, ant). Those changes are not being reflected on the eclipse project even if I refresh the project. If I close the project and reopen, it works.     Hi, I've been given a problem to fix, and I initially thought of .htaccess files, except for one thing, I quickly realized it's an IIS server. Is it possible to allow a webmaster the ability to modify the virtual directories using web.config files in the same way you can using .htaccess files? If so, any ideas on where I can find details on how this is done that I can communicate with the end client? We want to be able to do this without having to provide access to the IIS console to the webmaster. An example of the desired change is: http://FQDN/Careers/Careers.aspx?locale=en-ca&uid=Careers have http:FQDN/careers point to the above, but modified/added/removed by the end user using web.config

  • Linux & Windows Boot Up Times in Amazon Web Service and Windows Azure

    I've been working with Windows Azure and Amazon Web Services EC2 for a good many months now (almost getting to the years range) and I've seen something over and over that seems troubling. With AWS & Linux I commonly get instance startup times with EC2 around the 1-3 minute range. With AWS & Windows OS on an EC2 instance it often takes 10-20 minutes. With Windows Azure Web or Service Role I often get anywhere from 6-30 minutes waiting for a role to startup. I assume of course this involves booting up a windows instance somewhere in the fabric. I know there has always been tons of FUD about windows vs. Linux, but I'd really like to know why it is that Windows 08 or 03 boots so much slower in the cloud than Linux. Any specific technical information regarding this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.
