• Unique issue with Rails setup

  Becoming a bit of a Ruby convert, but I've run into an issue with my Rails installation. I realize, in spirit, this question may overlap with superuser.com, but am asking here due to the nature of the installation. My command: sudo gem install rails Response is: /opt/local/lib/ruby/vendor_ruby/1.8/rubygems/spec_fetcher.rb:232: warning:getc is obsolete; use STDIN.getc instead The "/opt/local" may be giving away the fact I'm using MacPorts(Mac OS 10.4). After that response, there is no new command line issued by the system, just a hang. Any insite is greatly appreciated.

• write error: Broken pipe

  Hi, I have to run a tool on around 300 directories. Each run take around 1 minute to 30 minute or even more than that. So, I wrote a python script having a loop to run the tool on all directories one after another. my python script has code something like: for directory in directories: os.popen('runtool_exec ' + directory) But when I run the python script I get the following error messages repeatedly: .. tail: write error: Broken pipe date: write error: Broken pipe .. All I do is login on a remote server using ssh where the tool, python script, and subject directories are kept. When I individually run the tool from command prompt using command like: runtool_exec directory it works fine. "broken pipe" error is coming only when I run using the python script. Any idea, workaround? Please suggest. Thanks. Fahim

  I have an application that is an NSStatusItem. It has a few different modes, each of which require an external process to be launched, during which the icon is simply highlighted, and appears to be frozen. I want to use the -setImage method (or reasonable facsimile) to display something along the lines of a "spinner" commonly seen in web applications and all over OS X. Is there any native method for accomplishing this (e.g. some instance of NSProgressIndicator?) or must I manually display an animation by cycling through a set of images? In either case, how would I implement?

  I have been seeing the following error message a lot whenever I build something using the simulator: dyld: Symbol not found: _objc_collect_if_needed Referenced from: /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneSimulator.platform/Developer/SDKs/iPhoneSimulator3.1.sdk/System/Library/Frameworks/Foundation.framework/Foundation Expected in: /usr/lib/libobjc.A.dylib in /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneSimulator.platform/Developer/SDKs/iPhoneSimulator3.1.sdk/System/Library/Frameworks/Foundation.framework/Foundation I am running XCode 3.2.2 on OS X 10.6.3, and have reinstalled the SDK twice with no avail. This error makes running any code on the simulator something of a Russian Roulette, but with 5 out of 6 chambers loaded. I have checked the files mentioned in the error message, and they all checkout as being present. This sometimes go away if I restart XCode. Other times I have to logout, or even restart. And sometimes nothing works. I have googled this, even tried apple's developer forums. Other than a reference to this in the MonoTouch list, this bug appears to be completely unknown otherwise. Anything help would be greatly appreciated - this is a real PITA. Cheers, Steve

  Hi, I a solution for IIS 7.0 which runs on windows server 2008 64bit to write my clients IP to IIS logs while the server is behind firewalls and proxies (Pass X-Forwarded-For header value). I've tried to install the an ISAPI Filter written by Joe Pruitt. it works great on Windows Server 2003 32bit IIS 6.0, but seems to do nothing at all on windows server 2008 64bit IIS 7.0. • Alternative to udev functionality on OSX

• CPU and profiling not supported for remote jvisualvm session

  When monitoring a remote app (using jstatd) I can neither profile nor monitor cpu consumption. Heap monitoring (provided I do not use G1) works. jvisualvm provides the message "Not supported for this JVM." in the CPU graph window. Is there anything missing in my setup? The google showed up next to no results.   Hi, On OS-X (PHP5.2.11) I have a file: siësta.doc (and thousand other with Unicode filenames) and I want to convert the file names to a web-consumable format (a-zA-Z0-9.). If I hardcode the file name above I can do the right conversion: <?php $file = 'siësta.doc'; echo preg_replace("/[^a-zA-Z0-9.]/u", '_', $file); // Output: si_sta.doc ?> But if I read the file names with scandir, I've got strange conversions: <?php $files = scandir(DIRNAME); foreach ($files as $file) { echo preg_replace("/[^a-zA-Z0-9.]/u", '_', $file); // Output for the file above: sie_sta.doc } ?> I tried to detect the encoding, set the encoding, convert it with iconv functions. • Compiling and installing pyactivemq on osx

  I'm having a hardtime trying to install pyactivemq (link) on my osx leopard. Following a tutorial (in portuguese) on compiling it ends up ok, but when I run the tests i receive only a crypt message: "Fatal Python error: Interpreter not initialized (version mismatch?)" There is not much information on the web about using pyactivemq on osx, but what I could find is that is something related to wrong linking when boost compiles. I'm running: Mac OS 10.5.8 MacPorts 1.8.2 APR 1.3.9 Xcode 3.1.4 Boost 1.41.0 (installing for python 2.5) Activemq-cpp 2.2.6 pyactivemq 0.1.0 If someone has any info on this it would be helpful

Given that WCF binding uses net.msmq:// URL, for instance net.msmq://server/private/nc_queue, how can one know what is the actual MSMQ address to which this URL is translated? Is there some kind of a trace that can be activated? Or an external tool that would help one capture the address? Thanks. EDIT1 OK, I owe a clarification. One can talk directly to MSMQ through the respective .NET API. In the case of MSMQ over its native port 1801, I would use this MSMQ address: FormatName:Direct=OS:server\private$\nc_queue When MSMQ is configured over HTTP, the address changes to something like this: FormatName:Direct=http://server/msmq/nc_queue But the WCF binding uses a standard URL to describe the address, like: net.msmq://server/private/nc_queue So, how can I know what is the actual MSMQ address (the one with the FormatName) to which the net.msmq:// is translated?

  Hello. I am working on a PHP project. There, I often use following syntax to output text in a cluase: if($boolean){ ?> output text <? }else{ ?> alternative <? } On my computer, this works perfectly well. I use XAMPP foer Mac OS X. But when I send the files to my coworker, these outputs often do not work and the compiler complains about having reached an unexpected $end of file. This occurs especially often when there is a tag in the output. We have to replace the means of output with echo. What's the reason for this strange behavior of the compiler? Is the above-mention syntax of outputting text wrong?

• What image format is fastest for BlackBerry?

  I'm trying to load some images using Bitmap.getBitmapResource(), but it takes about 2 or 3 seconds per image to load. I'm testing on the Storm, specifically. The odd thing is, when I install OS 5.0, the loading goes in a snap, no delay at all. Should I be looking at the format used? Or where the files are stored? I've tried both 24- and 8-bit PNGs, with transparency. The files are stored in a subdirectory in the COD, so getBitmapResource is passed a path, like "images/img1.png" instead of just "img1.png". Is any of this making things slower?

  I have made this game for Mac OS, but I realised that i need to make it better with multiplayer. Im an experienced Cocoa developer (so please, no RTFM's) but for some reason I never even touched on networking. • Getting Cabal to work with GHC 6.12.1

  I've installed the latest GHC package (6.12.1) on OS X, but I can't get Cabal to work. I've removed the version I had previously that worked with GHC 6.10 and tried to re-install from scratch. The latest Cabal version available for download is 1.6.0.2. However, when I try to build this I get the following error: Configuring Cabal-1.6.0.2... Setup: failed to parse output of 'ghc-pkg dump' From what I've found searching, this seems to suggest that the version of Cabal is too old for the version of GHC. Is there any way to get Cabal to work with GHC 6.12.1 yet? EDIT: To be clear, I'm trying to set-up cabal-install.

• How do I set the UI language in vim?

  I saw this on reddit, and it reminded me of one of my vim gripes: It shows the UI in German. Damn you, vim! I want English, but since my OS is set up in German (the standard at our office), I guess vim is actually trying to be helpfull. What magic incantations must I perform to get vim to switch the UI language? I have tried googling on various occasions, but can't seem to find an answer (No, Google, you're my friend *pat*, *pat*, but I allready know how to change the syntax highlighting, thank you!)...

• What is inside Windows SDK?

  For developing programs for windows, we need windows SDK. I understand that this SDK is what helps to create windows and handle window events and all that. I suppose it also enables us to manipulate with files and registries. (Does the same SDK is the reason for thread creation and handling?) All that is fine! I would like to know what are the files and libraries that come as a part of this SDK. Also does it come when I install the OS or when I install editors like Visual studio? Sometimes I see links to windows SDK separately as such. Is it same as the one that I get when installing Visual Studio or has something more than that.

• Safari Back button not honouring PHP logout session

  I've got a logout.php page which ends a user's session and works well and does the following: session_start(); session_unset(); session_destroy(); I've just noticed when testing with Safari that when you logout you can click the back button to return to the previous page which requires authentication but are not prompted. You cannot navigate away from this page without entering the navigation but it should not be displaying the previous page in the first place. So far in my testing this is only an issue with Safari on Mac OS X and there are a number of other reports about this but with no resolution that I could find: http://www.experts-exchange.com/Web_Development/Web_Languages-Standards/PHP/Q_23702691.html I would love to be able to disable this behaviour with Safari's back button - surprised that this is happening in the first place. • Why does xdebug crash apache on every XAMPP install I've tried?

  I've installed the Windows XAMPP package on three separate computers, 2 running Windows Vista 32 bit ( 1 Ultimate / 1 Home Premium ) and 1 running Windows Vista 64 Home Premium. After enabling xdebug in php.ini and restarting apache, viewing the default XAMPP localhost index causes apache to crash in the same way every time, reporting 'php_xdebug.dll' as the Fault Module Name.
