• Help with setting up AIM account

  Can anyone help me configure my AIM account? I have Oneiric and I want to set up my AIM account with what I believe is a chat client (the envelope icon on the top right). It is called Empathy. \n I tried to do this using Broadcast Account. It let me choose what account (Jabber, Pidgin, Aim, etc...). Once I entered my password for my AIM account, I got a pop-up asking for the master password for my Keyring. I didn't know what that was at the time so I closed that window after trying to enter my account password. Keyring apparently asks for a master password and it holds any keys you want to remember in the future. It gave me an error so I couldn't set up my AIM account completely. Now I'm trying to get back to that screen but I can only set up a Twitter or Facebook. Thanks, Aaron P.S. Can anyone tell me how to break the message up so it doesn't appear all on one line? I tried 'coding' a \n...seemed to work.

• Firefox on wine crashes on startup on Ubuntu

  First, let's explain why I want Firefox under wine, and not the Firefox that is shipped out of the box with Ubuntu. I want to use Firefox under wine because I want to use the Widevine addon, which is "at this time not available for linux". Here is what I did so far to install and use Firefox on wine. On Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, I just installed wine like that: sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install wine Then I downloaded the windows installer for Firefox from the mozilla website. I ran the Firefox Setup 25.0.exe file with wine but at the end of the install process when launching Firefox, I got a window notifying me that the program at crashed. • How to I get a rotated sprite to move left or right?

  Using Java/Slick 2D, I'm using the mouse to rotate a sprite on the screen and the directional keys (in this case, WASD) to move the spite. Forwards and backwards is easy, just position += cos(ang)*speed or position -= cos(ang)*speed. But how do I get the sprite to move left or right? I'm thinking it has something to do with adding 90 degrees to the angle or something. Any ideas? • How atomic is a SELECT INTO?

  Last week I got an interesting situation that prompted me to challenge a long standing assumption. I always thought that a SELECT INTO was an atomic statement, i.e. it would either complete successfully or the table would not be created. So I got very surprised when, after a “select into” query was chosen as a deadlock victim, the next execution (as the app would handle the deadlock and retry) would fail with: Msg 2714, Level 16, State 6, Line 1 There is already an object named '#test' in the database. The only hypothesis we could come up was that the “create table” part of the statement was committed independently from the actual “insert”. We can confirm that by capturing the “Transaction Log” event on Profiler (filtering by SPID0). The result is that when we run: SELECT * INTO #results FROM master.sys.objects we get the following output on Profiler: It is easy to see the two independent transactions. Although this behaviour was a surprise to me, it is very easy to workaround it if you feel the need (as we did in this case). You can either change it into independent “CREATE TABLE / INSERT SELECT” or you can enclose the SELECT INTO in an explicit transaction: SET XACT_ABORT ON BEGIN TRANSACTION SELECT * INTO #results FROM master.sys.objects COMMIT

• xorg, nvidia, log-in all hosed - how can I completely reset graphics set-up/settings?

  I just did a fresh install of Mythbuntu 12.04.1 on my Intel MB with nVidia 9500GT graphics card. Hardware's been working great with 10.10 for about 2 years. Background: (optional - feel free to skip to question) I was trying to get my component video output to generate 720p, messing around with the nvidia drivers, and now the entire display system is hosed. I can SSH in and get a terminal. Depending on which nvidia package I install/remove, I get: Garbage on screen (after I "apt-get remove nvidia*") A low-res graphical log-in screen where I can log in as fred or guest. If I log in as fred, it displays some text mode status line then goes right back to the log-in screen. If I log in as guest, I actually get the full Ubuntu desktop, but I need to be able to log in as fred. Other times I get an error: "API mismatch: the NVIDIA kernel module has version 304.43, but this NVIDIA driver component has version 295.49." I've googled around, including trying this thread with the same error message, but to no effect. Question: How can I just reset x settings, drivers, everything display-related to the exact same way it was after a fresh install?

• Ubuntu 12.10 boots to purple or black screen but intermittently boots fine

  I have a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.10 64bit dual booting with Win7 64bit. Windows boots fine every time. When I choose Ubuntu from Grub2 menu it will sometimes boot just fine. Most of the times though it gets stuck at a purple screen with nothing happening and no keys or key combinations working. Other times instead of the purple screen I get a black screen with a flashing cursor at the top. Nothing happens. I need to hold down the power button to restart and after a couple times of trying it will eventually boot into Ubuntu. Once that happens everything runs without any problems. I have tried different approaches to fix the problem but to no avail. I tried removing "quiet splash", used no splash, and nomodeset What I got from this was seeing all the text of the boot process but more often than not the process gets stuck right after recognizing all the USB ports and devices. If it gets stuck nothing happens (except when i plug in a usb device: it still recognizes it with a new line of text) In the case when the boot process works, after it lists the usb devices it tells me something like: recovery of read-only filesystem necessary. (its the filesystem that ubuntu runs on) then it does the recovery and i get: recovery complete. after that Ubuntu will boot properly and I get to see the login screen. I have no idea what to do to fix that problem. I have to reboot 3 to 5 times everytime I want to get into Ubuntu and I feel like I'm breaking my new Laptop. (its a lenovo ideapad z580 btw. i5 processor and nvidia gtx640 graphics card) I hope someone can help me. Thanks. Edit: i just got a "failed to enable AA error" message when waking it up from suspend. I don't know if that helps or has anything to do with the boot probs.

• Which tools should be used for data migration between environments?

  Ø  With the Oracle Utilities Application Framework based products there are a number of tools provided that can be used to transfer data from one environment to another. Ø  There are three main tools that implementations use: §  ConfigLab - A configurable copy facility is metadata aware and therefore understands the relationships between objects and by invoking the relevant maintenance objects validates the data copied. This utility uses the object validation to help ensure data integrity. Basically it is a set of configuration tables and a set of batch jobs to perform the migration of data. §  Bundling - A configurable release management tool that allows exporting of Advanced Configuration Environment based objects (business services, business objects, UI Maps etc) from one environment to another. §  Blueprint - An Oracle Utilities Software Development Kit (SDK) based tool to import metadata from the development environment to your initial testing environment. The utility is command line based and basically uses a text based configuration file to drive the utility on the source and target sides. Ø  Each tool has a role in an implementation but you must be careful to use the right tool for the right job within an implementation. The suggestions are as follows: §  Only use the Blueprint tool for migrating data from your development platform to your initial test environment. The blueprint tool is not designed to move large amounts of data and certainly is risky, if not used correctly, and can potentially break the integrity of your data. §  The SDK provides the configuration data that it is used for (mainly meta-data). This should not be extended as, while it can perform data migration on any data, it is not efficient and risky for certain types of configuration data.   I have run out of space on my WinXP virtual machine, which I only gave 10 GB space for when I created it. Is there an easy way to increase it to, say, 20 GB?   I installed the Oracle database following the steps mentioned in this blog. Downloaded 11g express edition Created a new user oracle under the group dba. Following steps are executed using this. Unzipped oracle-xe-11.2.0-1.0.x86_64.rpm.zip and then converted the rpm to the Ubuntu package by running: sudo alien --scripts -d oracle-xe-11.2.0-1.0.x86_64.rpm Created /sbin/chkconfig file and added the entries as specified there. Created /etc/sysctl.d/60-oracle.conf and added the entries as specified in the same link as above. • How do I properly use String literals for loading content?

  I've been using verbatim string literals for some time now, and never quite thought about using a regular string literal until I started to come across them in Microsoft provided XNA samples. With that said, I'm trying to implement a new AudioManager class from the Net Rumble sample. I have two (2) issues here: Question 1: In my code for my GameplayScreen screen I have a folder location written as the following, and it works fine: menuButton = content.Load<SoundEffect>(@"sfx/menuButton"); menuClose = content.Load<SoundEffect>(@"sfx/menuClose"); If you notice, you'll see that I'm using a verbatim string, with a forward slash "/". In the AudioManager class, they use a regular string literal, but with two backslashes "\". I understand that one is used as an escape, but why are they BACK instead of FORWARD? (See below) soundList[soundName] = game.Content.Load<SoundEffect>("audio\\wav\\"+ soundName); Question 2: I seem to be doing everything correctly in my AudioManager class, but I'm not sure of what this line means: audioFileList = audioFolder.GetFiles("*.xnb"); I suppose that the *xnb means look for everything BUT files that end in *xnb? I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong with my file locations, as the sound effects are not playing. • Struggling to get set up with JOGL2.0

  I guess that Game Dev' is a more sensible place for my problem then SO. I did have JOGL1.1 set up and working, but I soon discovered that it did not support the latest OpenGL, so I started work on upgrading to JOGL2.0 it's not gone too well. Firstly, is it worth me trying to get JOGL to work, or should I just move over to LWJGL? I am fairly comfortable with OpenGL (via C++) and from what I did get working with JOGL1.1, I seem to be OK adapting to it. Assuming that I stick with JOGL, am I foolish for trying to use JOGL2.0? From what I can gather, JOGL2.0 is still in beta, but I am willing to go with it as I want to make use of the latest OpenGL I can. I have been using the Eclipse IDE and have set up a user library for JOGL, here is a screen shot of the configuration and I have added this user library to my own Eclipse project. the system variable %JOGL_HOME% points to "C:\Users\edacosh\Downloads\JOGL2.0" so that should work fine. Now, the problem I actually having, when I try to run my code, on the line GLProfile glp = GLProfile.getDefault(); The code stops with the following message... • How can I hard reset a USB device?

  I have a USB device (a modem) that is really finicky. Sometimes it works fine, but other times it refuses to connect. The only solution I have found to fix it once it gets into a bad state is to physically unplug the device and plug it back in. However, I don't always have physical access to the machine it is plugged in on, so I'm looking for a way to do this through the command line. This post suggests running: sudo modprobe -w -r usb_storage; sudo modprobe usb_storage However I get an "unknown option -w" output. This slightly modified command: sudo modprobe -r usb_storage Fails with the message FATAL: Module usb_storage is in use. If I try to kill -9 the processes marked [usb-storage] before running they refuse to die (I think because they are deeply tied to the kernel). Anyone know of a way to do this? NOTE: I cross-posted this on superuser.com as I didn't know which was more appropriate. I will delete and/or link whichever one is answered first.

• Why do some programmers think there is a contrast between theory and practice?

  Comparing software engineering with civil engineering, I was surprised to observe a different way of thinking: any civil engineer knows that if you want to build a small hut in the garden you can just get the materials and go build it whereas if you want to build a 10-storey house you need to do quite some maths to be sure that it won't fall apart. In contrast, speaking with some programmers or reading blogs or forums I often find a wide-spread opinion that can be formulated more or less as follows: theory and formal methods are for mathematicians / scientists while programming is more about getting things done. What is normally implied here is that programming is something very practical and that even though formal methods, mathematics, algorithm theory, clean / coherent programming languages, etc, may be interesting topics, they are often not needed if all one wants is to get things done. According to my experience, I would say that while you do not need much theory to put together a 100-line script (the hut), in order to develop a complex application (the 10-storey building) you need a structured design, well-defined methods, a good programming language, good text books where you can look up algorithms, etc. So IMO (the right amount of) theory is one of the tools for getting things done. So my question is why do some programmers think that there is a contrast between theory (formal methods) and practice (getting things done)? Is software engineering (building software) perceived by many as easy compared to, say, civil engineering (building houses)? Or are these two disciplines really different (apart from mission-critical software, software failure is much more acceptable than building failure)?

• How do I get a Broadcom BCM4311 working?

  I'm having serious problems installing the broadcom drivers for ubuntu 11.04. It worked perfectly on my previous version, but now, it is impossible. I'm a user with no advance knowledge in linux, so I would need clear explanations on make, compile, etc. I was following the instructions on the following blog, with no luck. Broadcom BCM4311 Wireless not working Can someone help me? Edit: For the command: "lspci | grep Network", I get the following message: 06:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN (rev 01) For the command: iwconfig, i get the following: lo no wireless extensions. eth0 no wireless extensions. When i follow the following steps (from the above link), there are a NO error message at all: open the 'Synaptic Package Manager' and search for bcm uninstall the bcm-kernel-source package make sure that the firmware-b43-installer and the b43-fwcutter packages are installed type into terminal: cat /etc/modprobe.d/* | egrep '8180|acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt6|rt7|witch|wl' (you may want to copy this) and see if the term blacklist bcm43xx is there if it is, type cd /etc/modprobe.d/ and then sudo gedit blacklist.conf put a # in front of the line: blacklist bcm43xx then save the file (I was getting error messages in the terminal about not being able to save, but it actually did save properly). reboot 'End of procedure' Before (not ubuntu 11.04), if i wanted to connect wireles, i just went to the icon at the upper side of the screen, click, showed ALL the wireless network available, and done. Now, the only options i see are: Wired Network Auto Eth0 Disconnect VPN Enable networking Connection information Edit connection. hope above info is enough for your help.
