• Game programming and quantity of timers

  I've made a simple 2D game engine using C# and DirectX and it's fully functional for the demo I made to test it. I have a Timer object that uses QueryPerformanceCounter and I don't know what's the better choice: use only one timer in the game loop to update everything in the game, or an independent timer in every object that needs one. My worry is that when I try to implement threads, what will happen with timers? What happens with the sync?

• BinarySerialization size not consist?! (2 replies)

  Hello all, I have met something pretty odd. I am running a serialization on an object and not always the size of the output stream is the same. I even created a test that I am running the serialization in a loop, and each time I am running I have different results sizes in some point in the loop. This happens when I am using a object that was filled in the server side, and I get them thru WCF work...

• HTMLUNIT Facebook javascript warning

  Hi I am trying to create simple application that would be able to search people on facebook using given e-mail. I am already able to log into an account using the HTMLunit tool and even create a page, which should throw result of my search. But when I try to print the result as XML the file is missing some blocks of javascript results (I can tell that they are missing by comparing file created by my application and source code, that can be viewed by using IE) Is there any way around this? I just need to get the same result IE's showsource function does. Thanks a lot.   I am getting this error while trying to create a connection pool, on my Oracle database, Oracle 10gR2. java.sql.SQLException: ORA-00604: error occurred at recursive SQL level 1 ORA-12705: Cannot access NLS data files or invalid environment specified I am able to connect to the database over sqlplus & iSQLPlus client, but when I try to connect using this Java program, I get this error just when the connection pool is to be initialised and it does not initialise the connection pool.   What is a "line" object in Inkscape? Drawing lines in Inkscape is by using the tool "Draw Bezier curves and straight lines (Shift+F6)". This creates objects of another type, "path". Using Inkscape: is there a way to convert an object of type "line" into an object of the more general type "path"? I have imported a drawing (mostly lines, rectangles and text) that has been through Adobe Illustrator: originally made in Inkscape, imported into Illustrator, edited, saved from Illustrator as SVG, imported into Inkscape.   I am trying to set up an ipsec tunnel between our ASA 5505 and a Juniper ssg5. The tunnel is up and running, but I cannot get any data through it. The local network I am on is 172.16.1.0 and the remote is 192.168.70.0. But I cannot ping anything on their netowork. I receive a "Phase 2 OK" when I set up the ipsec. I think this is the part of the config that is applicable. • can not connect to SQL running on amazon ec2 machine

  I am using SQL managment studio 2008 running on an Amazon EC2 machine. I am unable to connect to the database in my asp.net application. The EC2 instance has been set to accept connections over the SQL port. I am also able to remote the machine as well as view websites hosted on the server. Listed below is part of the connection string relating to this instance. When the program is ran and this connection string is called, it returns tcp error 0 - no return response. it just times out. <add name="ProjectServer" connectionString="Data Source=*IP ADDRESS HERE*,1433;Initial Catalog=*Catalog Name*;User ID=IP-0A6ED514\Administrator;"/> I removed the ip and the catalog name for the example, but I am sure they are correct. The only thing that I could think may cause an error, is the differences in names between the user id and the server name - the server name is ip-0A6ED514\sharepoint but the user name is ip-0A6ED514\administrator when I log into the sql server manager on the EC2 instance. A password is not used. Not sure if I would need to leave in a blank string for password - also not sure if the difference between server name and user id to log in makes a difference. Any help is appreciated. Thank you. update - when this connection string is used with out the port, i get tcp provider error 40 - when the port is in there, i get error 0 edit- the sql server is using windows authentication - does this make a difference? • How do you setup FTP with IIS Manager Users in an NLB environment with shared IIS configs?

  I've setup a 2 node NLB cluster and used the following to share IIS configs between them. http://blogs.technet.com/b/meamcs/archive/2012/05/30/configuring-iis-7-5-shared-configuration.aspx The IIS configs and content is located on a network share via a UNC path. This works - updating IIS settings on one node, is visible in another node and my website works on the individual nodes and the cluster as whole. I'm able to setup an FTP site and successfully connect with my Windows login. However, I want to use IIS Manager Authentication as defined in: http://www.iis.net/learn/publish/using-the-ftp-service/configure-ftp-with-iis-manager-authentication-in-iis-7 I've tried using "Network Service" with the FTP COM object as well as a dedicated user account that exists on all three hosts, but every time I try to login with an IIS user I get something like the following: IISWMSVC_AUTHENTICATION_UNABLE_TO_READ_CONFIG An unexpected error occurred while retrieving the authentication information. • What permission(s) does an application pool identity required to manage other application pools?

  I have a web site (used to manage various parts of our software) that needs the permissions required to start/stop other application pools. I've created a user and set the app pool identity to custom, however the web app still can't start/stop the app pools. I get the following Error: System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Filename: redirection.config Error: Cannot read configuration file due to insufficient permissions at Microsoft.Web.Administration.Interop.AppHostWritableAdminManager.GetAdminSection(String bstrSectionName, String bstrSectionPath) at Microsoft.Web.Administration.Configuration.GetSectionInternal(ConfigurationSection section, String sectionPath, String locationPath) at Microsoft.Web.Administration.ServerManager.get_ApplicationPoolsSection() at Microsoft.Web.Administration.ServerManager.get_ApplicationPools() Discussion here suggests setting the application pool to local system or administrator, this does work, but I don't want to do this for security reasons (external support will need access this site). I did give the user higher permissions (as suggested here), starting by making it part of the local administrators group, but initially this didn't work, and giving the user read/write/mod permission on C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv\config also didn't work. I must have done something wrong as local administrator now works, however this still isn't what I want. So can anyone suggest the permissions I need to add to this user, and how can I apply them? An answer my problem (but different question) is here, but to clarify, I think I need to give an individual user "IIS Runtime Operation Permissions", does anyone know how to do this, if indeed this is the permissions I require?

  I've been reading a lot online about custom URL handlers / custom protocol handlers such as: Launching External Applications using Custom Protocols under OSX OS X URL handler to open links to local files I get that you can tell the system that a particular program is able to handle a certain scheme / protocol with the Info.plist file: <key>CFBundleURLTypes</key> <array> <dict> <key>CFBundleURLName</key> <string>Local File</string> <key>CFBundleURLSchemes</key> <array> <string>local</string> </array> </dict> </array> <key>NSUIElement</key> <true/> But if there are multiple applications that are capable of opening the same URL handler, such as mailto: how do you specify which one you want the system to use? There were some references to utilities like the More Internet preference pane which no longer seems to be available from the author's site. I did find it online by Googling but it seems a bit shaky - like it was written for an older OSX - perhaps Tiger. I haven't been able to find information on how to set the URL handler for protocols and custom protocols. I'm assuming there is a plist file somewhere that I can edit - or maybe there is a newer, better utility that works well with Mountain Lion?

  I have a 16 GB Windows Server 2008 x64 machine mostly running SQL Server 2008. The free memory as seen in Task Manager is very low (128 MB at the moment), i.e. about 15.7 GB are used. So far, so good. Now when I try to narrow down the process(es) using the most memory I get confused: None of the processes have more than 200MB Working Set Size as displayed in the 'Processes' tab of Task Manager. Well, maybe the Working Set Size isn't the relevant counter? To figure that out I used a PowerShell command [1] to sum up each individual property of the process object in sort of a brute force approach - surely one of them must add up to the 15.7 GB, right? Turns out none of them does, with the closest being VirtualMemorySize (around 12.7 GB) and PeakVirtualMemorySize (around 14.7 GB). WTF? To put it another way: Which of the numerous memory related process information is the "correct" one, i.e. counts towards the server's physical memory as displayed in the Task Manager's 'Performance' tab? • Prevent outgoing traffic unless OpenVPN connection is active using pf.conf on Mac OS X

  I've been able to deny all connections to external networks unless my OpenVPN connection is active using pf.conf. However, I lose Wi-Fi connectivity if the connection is broken by closing and opening the laptop lid or toggling Wi-Fi off and on again. I'm on Mac OS 10.8.1. I connect to the Web via Wi-Fi (from varying locations, including Internet cafés). The OpenVPN connection is set up with Viscosity. I have the following packet filter rules set up in /etc/pf.conf # Deny all packets unless they pass through the OpenVPN connection wifi=en1 vpn=tun0 block all set skip on lo pass on $wifi proto udp to [OpenVPN server IP address] port 443 pass on $vpn I start the packet filter service with sudo pfctl -e and load the new rules with sudo pfctl -f /etc/pf.conf. I have also edited /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.pfctl.plist and changed the line <string>-f</string> to read <string>-ef</string> so that the packet filter launches at system startup. This all seems to works great at first: applications can only connect to the web if the OpenVPN connection is active, so I'm never leaking data over an insecure connection. But, if I close and reopen my laptop lid or turn Wi-Fi off and on again, the Wi-Fi connection is lost, and I see an exclamation mark in the Wi-Fi icon in the status bar. Clicking the Wi-Fi icon shows an "Alert: No Internet connection" message: To regain the connection, I have to disconnect and reconnect Wi-Fi, sometimes five or six times, before the "Alert: No Internet connection" message disappears and I'm able to open the VPN connection again. Other times, the Wi-Fi alert disappears of its own accord, the exclamation mark clears, and I'm able to connect again. Either way, it can take five minutes or more to get a connection again, which can be frustrating. Why does Wi-Fi report "No internet connection" after losing connectivity, and how can I diagnose this issue and fix it?

• Problems with bash script, mysql inserts and launchd

  ========= I am developing a automated system, which consists of 3 parts: mysql, bash and launchd. Bash script takes folders of work related stuff, zips, archives and puts info about them into database that is located on a local MAMP server. Everything works as expected when I run the script from terminal. But when I use Launchd to automatically run this script, it functions without errors and it does not put the values into database. I've tried to make logs of returned messages, but the logs end up being empty as the command has run the way it was supposed to. • Upgrading MySQL Connector/Net

  I am trying to publish a website with our hosting provider. I am getting error due to the fact that they only allow a medium trust and the MySQL Connector/Net that I am using requires reflection to work. Unfortunately, reflection is not allowed in a medium trust. After some research I found out that the newest version of the MySQL Connector/Net may solve this problem. Connector/Net 6.6 includes enhancements to partial trust support to allow hosting services to deploy applications without installing the Connector/Net library in the GAC. I am thinking that will solve my problem. So, I unistalled MySQL Connector/Net 6.4.4 and I installed MySQL Connector/Net 6.6.4. When I run the application in Visual Studio 2010 I get the error: ProviderIncompatibleException was unhandled by user code The message is An error occurred while getting provider information from the database. This can be caused by Entity Framework using an incorrect connection string. Check the inner exceptions for details and ensure that the connection string is correct. InnerException is The provider did not return a ProviderManifestToken string. Everything works fine when I have Connector/Net 6.4.4 installed. I can access the database and perform Read/Write/Delete action against it. I have a reference to the following in the project: MySql.Data MySql.Data.Entity MySql.Web My connection string in Web.config <connectionStrings> <add name="AESSmartEntities" connectionString="server=ec2-xxx-xx-xxx-xx.compute-1.amazonaws.com; user=root; database=nunya; port=3306; password=xxxxxxx;" providerName="MySql.Data.MySqlClient" /> </connectionStrings> What might I be doing wrong? Do I need any additional setting(s) to work with version 6.6.4 that wasn't required in the older version 6.4.4?

• One-To-Many Powershell Scripts

  I'm trying to create a script to run as a scheduled task, which will run against multiple servers and retrieve some information. To start with, I populate the list of servers by querying AD for all servers that match a certain set of criteria, using Get-ADComputer. The problem is, the list is returned as an object, which I can't then pass to the New-PSSession list. I have tried converting it to a comma-seperated string by doing the following: foreach ($server in $serverlist) {$newlist += $server.Name + ","} but this still doesn't work. the alternative is to iterate through the list and run the various commands against each server one at a time, but my preference would be to avoid this and run them using one-to-many remoting. UPDATE: To clarify what I want to end up being able to do is using -ComputerName $serverlist, so I want $serverlist to be a string rather than an object. UPDATE 2: Thanks for all the suggestions. Between them and my original method I'm starting to wonder whether -ComputerName can accept a string variable? I've got varying degrees of success getting the list of computers converted to a comma separated string, but no matter how I do it I always get invalid network address.
