• Avoiding Object Oriented Pitfalls, Migrating from C, What Worked for You?

  I've been programming in procedural languages for quite some time now, and my first reaction to a problem is to start breaking it down into tasks to perform rather than to consider the different entities (objects) that exist and their relationships. I have had a university course in OOP, and understand the fundamentals of encapsulation, data abstraction, polymorphism, modularity and inheritance. I read Learning to think in the Object Oriented Way and Learning object oriented thinking, and will be looking at some of the books pointed to in those answers. I think that several of my medium to large sized projects will benefit from effective use of OOP but as a novice I would like to avoid time consuming, common errors. Based on your experiences, what are these pitfalls and what are reasonable ways around them? If you could explain why they are pitfalls, and how your suggestion is effective in addressing the issue it'd be appreciated. I'm thinking along the lines of something like "Is it common to have a fair number of observer and modifier methods and use private variables or are there techniques for consolidating/reducing them?" I'm not worried about using C++ as a pure OO language, if there are good reasons to mix methods. (Reminiscent of the reasons to use GOTOs, albeit sparingly.) Thank you!

• How restore back up email files in qmail

  I have problem with restoring some old backup mail files in a mail server that uses qmail. The problem is, when I copy a new email file to the /cur directory, the number of emails in front of inbox increases, but when I click on the inbox, I don't see the newly copied email. I can only see the old emails. I also deleted maildirsize and courierimapuiddb files and they where automatically created again, but it didn't help and I cannot still see the email in my inbox. Is there something I am missing? How can I restore the backed up email files? Please note that when I copy the email files in /.sent-mail/cur directory, they are all displayed in my sent box, but that doesn't happen for inbox files in /cur directory.

• Developer – Cross-Platform: Fact or Fiction?

We weigh the platform options, monetization opportunities, APIs, and distribution models. Too often, I see developers choose one platform, or write to the lowest common denominator, which limits their reach and market success. But who wants to be ?me too”? Cross-platform coding is possible in some environments, for some applications, for some level of innovation—but it’s not all-inclusive, yet. There are some tricks of the trade to develop cross-platform, including using languages and environments that ?run everywhere.” HTML5 is today’s answer for web-enabled platforms. However, it’s not a panacea, especially if your app requires the ultimate performance or native UI look and feel. There are other cross-platform frameworks that address the presentation layer of your application. But for those apps that have a preponderance of native code (e.g., highly-tuned C/C++ loops), there aren’t tons of solutions today to help with code reuse across these platforms using consistent tools and libraries. • Different background color for multiple filetypes in vim

  Is it possible to have different background colors in vim (ie. one light, one dark) when dealing with files with multiple filetypes (ie. :set ft=html.php)? In PHP code with HTML embedded, it can be difficult to see one single PHP statement amongst dozens of HTML lines, see below. I'll settle for anything, be it different bg color, a marker in the margin, a second left margin (one vim plugin does this for marks), maybe highlighting the <?php tag for example (although that's less than ideal) EDIT: I don't think this is possible at the syntax level as the syntax appears to use a limited number of elements (String, Function, Identifier...). This is no doubt to allow for the easy integration with colorschemes. SyntaxAttr is a good plugin to demonstrate this. Put it over any part of the code and it will tell you what syntax group it belongs to.

• Data Archiving vs not

  For the sake of data integrity, is it wiser to archive your files or just leave them unarchived. No compression is being used. My thinking is that if you leave your files unarchived, if there is some form of corruption it will only hurt a smaller number of files. Though if you archive, lets say all of your documents, if there is even the slightest corruption, the entire archive is unrecoverable. So whats the best way to keep a clean file system, but not be subject to data corruption.

  Often our team members are coming to me with a compliant that their VMs are slow. Our team members suggested to shutdown some of the VMs temporarily and try to access the VM. But most cases that would not help. Assume that i have assigned 4 GB for and 2 CPUs for my VM. So ideally it should not face performance issue. As our ESXi 4.1 server has multiple VM in the same server (we have overcommited memory and CPU). Does shut down other VM really helps to improve performance or not? [Note : We are using ESXi 4.1 and our hardware is R710 server. We have more number of VMs in single server so we have overcommited memory.]

• Unicorn 3 throwing tons of errors (Rails 3.0.3, Unicorn 3.0)

  I just tried to upgrade to Unicorn 3.0. I changed my Gemfile and did a bundle install. When restarting my Unicorn I got tons of errors beginning with: Unhandled listen loop exception #<Errno::ENOSYS: Function not implemented - accept>. /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/unicorn-3.0.0/lib/unicorn/http_server.rb:593:in `kgio_tryaccept' I’m on Ubuntu 10.04. And, can anyone explain to me why the heck I can’t use an older version of a Gem than the most recent installed? After getting the errors above I just changed the version number of Unicorn in my Gemfile to 1.1.4. But this didn’t solve the problem, Ruby told me that You have already activated unicorn 3.0.0, but your Gemfile requires unicorn 1.1.4. Consider using bundle exec. (Gem::LoadError) Do I really have to? Thanks in advance for your help, guys.

  I have configured my bank account within quickbooks to import bank statements. I have wxported the bank statement. Then used the convert process available within QB to convert. The file name shows the bsb then some other figures and then the account number. However it will not import. I am wondering how ot make this work.   Based on the example of Rastrigin's function. At the plot function, if I chose 'best fitness', on the same graph 'mean fitness' will also be plotted. I understand well about 'best fitness' whereby it plots the best function value in each generation versus iteration number. It will reach value zero after some times. I don't understand about 'mean fitness'in the graph plotted. What do those 'mean fitness' values mean? How does the 'mean fitness' graph help to understand Rastrigin's function? What are the meaning of the term initial population, initial score and initial range? I wish to have a better understanding of these terms. The default value for initial range is [0,1]. Does it mean that 0 is the lower bound (lb) and 1 is the upper bound (ub)? Do these values interfere with the lb and ub values I set in the constraints? I try to better understand about lb and ub. If my lb is 0 and ub is 5, does it mean that my final point values will be within 0 and 5? If I know the lb and ub for my problem is between 0 and 5, do I just set the initial range as [0,5] at all times and may I assume that this is the best option for initial range, and I need not try it with any other values?

• Nginx Static Content Server Maxing Out?

  I use nginx to serve the static content for a decently busy website of mine. I have the logging disabled, and 4 worker processes enabled with 5,000 connections per worker (which should yield a max connection limit of 20,000. The server is only operating at about 10% CPU usage and 50% ram, but it's very laggy, and sometimes nginx is so slow to respond to the requests, it times out. For a small number of connections, it's fine, but once any load starts occurring (~2,500 connections), it backs up and bogs down. Is there any other bottlenecks or limits that I might be hitting? This is a FreeBSD server, and all the static files are located locally (not NFS). The NIC is an unmetered gigabit, and it's only using around 75 megabit. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

  I always have a pause at boot saying my filesystems are being checked (with a "press C to cancel" note, too). Actually (seeing boot.log) I think it's the / fs, which is located at /dev/sdb5 Several questions altoghether, here (hope this does not break any rule): Is this normal? Can I (or even should I) prevent this anyhow? • The Differences between MAC Address and Network Layer Address

  A Mac address is a fixed number associated with a NICs onboard memory. It is initially assigned at the factory. The MAC address is broken up into 2 parts. The first part is the Block id which is six digit sequences that is unique to each vender. The second section is the device id which is created and assigned by the manufacture. A Network layer address is different because there format based on the type of protocol and network used. Also, there unique id is based on a hierarchal addressing theme on subsets of data  and narrowing it down. You also live in the area located in Florida called Boca Raton and you are also in the area of 33428 which is located in Boca Raton. • Finding a way to simplify complex queries on legacy application

  I am working with an existing application built on Rails 3.1/MySql with much of the work taking place in a JavaScript interface, although the actual platforms are not tremendously relevant here, except in that they give context. The application is powerful, handles a reasonable amount of data and works well. As the number of customers using it and the complexity of the projects they create increases, however, we are starting to run into a few performance problems. As far as I can tell, the source of these problems is that the data represents a tree and it is very hard for ActiveRecord to deterministically know what data it should be retrieving. My model has many relationships like this: Project has_many Nodes has_many GlobalConditions Node has_one Parent has_many Nodes has_many WeightingFactors through NodeFactors has_many Tags through NodeTags GlobalCondition has_many Nodes ( referenced by Id, rather than replicating tree ) WeightingFactor has_many Nodes through NodeFactors Tag has_many Nodes through NodeTags The whole system has something in the region of thirty types which optionally hang off one or many nodes in the tree. My question is: What can I do to retrieve and construct this data faster? Having worked a lot with .Net, if I was in a similar situation there, I would look at building up a Stored Procedure to pull everything out of the database in one go but I would prefer to keep my logic in the application and from what I can tell it would be hard to take the queried data and build ActiveRecord objects from it without losing their integrity, which would cause more problems than it solves. It has also occurred to me that I could bunch the data up and send some of it across asynchronously, which would not improve performance but would improve the user perception of performance. However if sections of the data appeared after page load that could also be quite confusing. I am wondering whether it would be a useful strategy to make everything aware of it's parent project, so that one could pull all the records for that project and then build up the relationships later, but given the ubiquity of complex trees in day to day programming life I wouldn't be surprised if there were some better design patterns or standard approaches to this type of situation that I am not well versed in.

• How does one rein in the complexities of web development ?

  I have been a server-side programmer for most of my career and have only recently started spending more time on web development. I am amazed at the number of things I need to master in order to write a decent web application. Just to list down a few tools/technologies I need to learn, Server side programming language (Java/JSP, ASP, PHP, Ruby or something else) A decent web framework (for any medium to big size application). HTML & CSS Javascript Javascript library (JQuery/ExtJS etc. primarily for AJAX). Good to know even if not necessary. At least a basic knowledge of web design - layouts, colors, fonts etc. A good understanding of web security. A good understanding of Performance/scalability issues. Testing, browser compatibility issues etc. The list goes on. So, my question to seasoned web developers is - How do you guys manage to learn and keep yourself updated on so many things? While developing a web application, how do you handle the complexities involved in these areas and yet manage to write an application that is well designed, user friendly, secure, performant and scalable. As a web developer, does one have to be a jack of all trades or should one specialize in one or two areas and leave the rest to other members of the team ?

  We have employees with competencies: Pete Welder Carpenter Melissa Carpenter Assume they both work 40 hours/week, and have not yet been assigned work. We need to report the availability of these competencies, expressed in hours. As far as I can see now, we can report this in two ways: Method A. When someone has multiple competencies, count them both. Welder 40 hours Carpenter 80 hours Method B. When someone has multiple competencies, count an equal division of hours for each Welder 20 hours Carpenter 60 hours Method A has our preference: - A good planner will know to plan the least available competency first. If 30 hours of welding is planned, we will be left with 10 welder, 50 carpenter. - Method B has the disadvantage that the planner thinks he cannot plan the job when 30 hours of welding is required. However, if we report this we would like to give an estimate of the reliability of the numbers for each competency, i.e. how much are these over-reported? In my example A, would I say that carpenter is 100% over-reported, or 50%, or maybe another number? How would I calculate this for large numbers of competencies? I'm sure we are not the first ones dealing with this, is there a 'usual' way of doing this in planning? Additionally: - Would there be an even better method than A or B? - Optionally, we also have an preference order of competencies (like: use him/her in this order), Pete could be 1. welder 2. carpenter. • Mail.app Bug -- Keeps Showing Messages

  Hi, I'm running Mail.app on my Mac (Snow Leopard). Two GMail accounts are linked to it using POP. There is an annoying bug which causes certain messages from one of the account to show up in my Inbox. They are always messages I sent to a certain account, and are 6-7 messages from one thread. If I delete them, they just show up again if I restart Mail.app or switch to a different mailbox and back, although the number of messages goes down, until it reaches one, and goes back to six-seven. The only solution I have found is to delete the offending thread from within GMail, except that then another thread takes its place and starts annoying me. Any solution?

I noticed that for the same video, the downloadable one with FLV 240 extension is larger than another one with MPEG4 360 extension. What does the number (240 and 360) mean? And which file's compression rate is bigger? That is to say, which one removed much more file elements than the other from the orignal file?

  I have a number of staging and test servers that I need to constantly modify my hosts file to access (they depend on the domain name, so i have to change the hosts file to get them to work). I find this annoying. I'd like to setup a portable browser of some kind for each kind of site i want to work with. Is there any version of any graphical web browser (including browsers based on the rendering engines of other browsers) that will do this? This way i can simply launch the instance that's already configured to work with staging if i want to test staging. Any ideas?

  I need to change the setting of router Fritz Box. The setting were set by another person. I can't connect to router using cable, may be standard port or address were changed. So the only option is to switch to factory settings. Usually there is a button which deletes all the settings. I read the documentation and they tell to call the number #991*15901590* on the router. Do I have to connect telephone to router?
