• Why didn't virtual ubuntu halts clearly?

  I am running Ubuntu 11.10 on Oracle Virtual Box 4.2.4 under Windows 7 x64. To stop guest system I often use halt command which works fine on physical machines. But it looks hanging on virtual ubunty. After halt it starts shutting down, Ubuntu logo appears with dots below flashing. After some cycles it just stops. VM manager does not feel machine is gone, so I need to power off it. P.S. The system stops Ok if I shutdown it via GUI.

• Is there a way I can filter traffic by page-type based upon URL structure in Google-Analytics or Google Webmaster Tools?

  I have a local business directory site. I'm trying to segment my incoming traffic by page-type such that I can find out what percentage of traffic is going to zip code pages exclusively and what percentage is going to city/state level pages. I basically want to filter by URL structure to find out what percentage of total traffic zip code pages account for. The reason for doing this is to find out if Google Tag Manager can help with this? • How important is it that you know the C++ standard?

  I did try searching, but I did not see a similar question (either that or my search terminology was incorrect - if so, feel free to close). I am an avid user of SO, and I notice that there are lots of references to the C++ standard in discussions and answers - and I have to admit, I have never read this particular document, the language makes my eyes hurt... So, the question is, can a C++ developer really code for a living without ever having read this document? Is it really important for us mere mortals who are not in the business of writing compilers?

• Diagramming software with API allowing high customisation of shapes and actions

  I am after something like Visio or Lucid. A relatively simple charting/diagramming tool, to build tree-like structures from (my) pre-defined nodes (squares), but with a powerful API. Requirements: limit the type of objects allowed to be dropped on the diagram validate a model (e.g. node of type A must precede node of type B; must enter node Title) export a model import a model Our domain is very specific, and its a tool we'd want to offer to some of our power users. The $500 Visio licence isn't really within the business model. I'll put no constraints on framework or deployment (web or desktop) - is there anything out there?

• Duplicate domain names - .net and .com Create separate pages, or redirect?

  In a SEO point of view: This website has a good amount of traffic for a local business, but also ships some merchandise. While the .net domain (registered first) is associated with the local busines (google places, maps, etc...) the .com domain only redirects to the .net domain. Is it good, bad or okay to create a different page for the domain .com for example, that would be pretty simple, but would link to the 10 different categories of products that this company sells? I know links are good, so there's that, but what else is good, or bad? Thanks in advance!

• SSL certificates - best bang for your buck [closed]

  I am in the process of setting up an online store. This is the first project I have attempted which will require a good level of security, so I recognise that an decent SSL certificate is a must. My current (albeit admittedly basic) understanding of the options are: DV SSL - more or less pointless, as provides no verification. OV SSL - better, as provides a basic level of organisational verification. EV SSL - 'better, full' verification, but much more expensive. As this is a new business venture, and budgets are tight, which option provides the best bang for my buck? I have read questions such as EV SSL Certificates - does anyone care? which suggest that EV certificates are a bit of a con. Does this mean that OV certificates offer better value for money, especially for new businesses with shallow pockets?

I've been hearing a lot of good press about Ruby On Rails but I'm having a hard time finding much information on the advantages of using ASP.Net MVC 3 over RoR, yet I see many existing businesses migrating over to ASP.Net MVC. Does ASP.Net MVC 3 have any advantages over Ruby On Rails for existing businesses such as possibly tying into old databases better or allowing for more complex business logic? Or is it most likely the case that they are transferring simply because they were already using ASP.Net for Winforms?

• Aptana Studio 3 does not start up in Ubuntu 12.10

  I followed the instructions provided here to install Aptana Studio 3 in my Ubuntu 12.10. I have completed all the steps with out any problems. When I click the Aptana icon in my Unity bar nothing happens. No error pops up! I gave permission on the sh file and on the directory (/opt/Aptana_Studio_3) but still same problem. If I try executing the sh file in the /opt/Aptana_Studio_3 folder, it says "Syntax error: "(" unexpected Aptana". Also I cannot execute the Aptana binary file directly. I have been trying to solve the problem for a while now. Any help would be much appreciated. EDIT: I have Oracle Java 7 installed. I have read some post about backwards compatibility problem with Java 6 but dont know whether that's the issue. I will edit the question if I find something new.

• How to deal with "software end-of-life" situations?

  When a vendor declares that they no longer intend to provide any support or services to a piece of software (and stated the intent to exit the business - offering no upgrade paths), and stated that customers must pay a nominal fee in order to have the existing data exported, what kind of recourse do programmers/customers have? Things I can think of: Need to purchase spare hardware and set up a spare environment on which the software can continue to operate. Various data export methods which do not require vendor involvement. (For example, screen scraping, printing to image followed by re-scanning, etc) Parallel systems where staff will duplicate the old data into a new system manually or semi-automatically Legal means, in case the vendor is in financial trouble Any other ideas? Assuming that there is no "circumvention" involved (no DRM, no DMCA), is data recovery or reverse engineering legal/acceptable?

  I was looking for a PHP form generator this morning and ran across "Instant Form Pro" by Joel Comm (http://www.instantformpro.com). It looks like it offers what I'm looking for (easy to use quick form generator based on PHP and MySQL that's self-hosted with no other fees), but the site smacks of "scam." It's being pitched as a way to generate surveys to increase your business, make lots more money, etc. Is this thing worth the $97 or is there an open source alternative that might be... safer?

However, there are several reasons from a business stand point why converting our shop to open source would be questioned.   For the first time I'm in the position where I'm helping interview potential front-end developers. (The other interviewer is more business & PM-focused, although he is a former developer.) I probe for knowledge and background in css, js, and other related technologies, but those questions are really just testing for lingo. I feel that it'd be unfair to ask very specific questions about css when we're not infront of a computer, because my style of programming css is a lot of guesswork. • Learning low latency C++ and Java?

  I'm currently in a role where I dont get to write any C++ or Java. However, the role is good because provides me with exposure to the business side (i'm interested in finance). Eventually I would like to get into high frequency trading infrastructure. Therefore, outside of work hours i'd like to maximise the knowledge I can gain about high performance Java and C++. I already have the Java Performance Tuning book, which is ok but not impressive. Can people recommend anymore latency blogs/books/websites for learning about making C++/C/Java or even Unix very fast? Or perhaps making the network parts of the OS (if re-writing Unix components) faster? EDIT: Or perhaps we could make this THE thread for advice on writing fast code

• Web Development Internship Interview Help

  Tomorrow morning I'm interviewing for a web development internship position and I'm seeking general advice pertaining to the questions that interviewers might ask, some questions I should ask them during the interview, and any general tips/suggestions that might help. They're looking for someone with knowledge mainly in HTML/CSS, Joomla, MySQL and PHP, all of which I have excluding Joomla (which I'm installing/doing as much research on as possible at the moment) and I was able to provide them a link to a site I'd been paid to build for a small business which they mentioned they were impressed with. I'd like to prepare myself for the interview as much as I possibly can but I'm wondering how much time I should spend rehashing elements of the languages they're looking for, or if it'd be a better use of my time to research their company and figure out how I'd respond to general questions. I feel that perhaps because I showed them a project I've completed that they'll know that I can grasp the technical side of what they're going for... but this is my first internship interview in this field so I'm not exactly sure what to expect.   Our software dev team is currently using kanban for our development lifecycles, and, from the reasonably short experience of a few months, I think it's going quite well (certainly compared to a few months ago when we didn't really have a methodology). Our team, however, is directed to do work defined by project managers (not software project managers, just general business), and they're using the PMBOK methodology. Question is, how does a traditional methodology like PMBOK, Prince2 etc fit with a lean software development methodology like kanban or scrum? Is it just wasting everyone's time as all the requirements are effectively drawn up to start with (although inevitably changed along the way)?

• Why is my content database so large?

  If your SharePoint site collection hasn't grown, but your content database has, the most likely culprit is versioning.  If a list -- or worse, a library -- has versioning enabled, the default is to keep every single one.  That means that every time someone edits and checks in a document, its storage footprint increases by the size of the document (and probably a little more).The solution?  It could be a bit painful, but you'll need to go back into each library and restrict the number of versions to keep (three is sufficient for most uses, but your needs may vary).  I suggest keeping only major versions as well, since minor versions are really just stopping points on the way to a published document.Of course if you have a real business need to keep all those versions around, then you'll want to look into an archiving solution that will take the old versions out of the content database but still make them available if necessary.
