• Automation of testing using JUnit

  Hi, i am trying to automate manual testing of modules in my project. We are dealing with IBM Websphere Message queue software. We have a trigger component written in core java which when executed polls for availability of message in the configured queue. Its an indefinite while loop that keeps the trigger component running. I have written test cases in JUnit to put message in the queue and now will i be able to start/stop the trigger component on demand? Invoking the trigger component keeps it running and i am not getting the control back to check the expected output. If i start it in thread then the log files to which the trigger component is supposed to update when processing the message is not getting updated. How can i resolve this situation. Your suggestion and directions is highly appreciated. Thanks, -Vijay

• What are the CS fundamentals behind package/dependency management?

  Often I hear about situations where companies are developing extensable in house software (the dreaded enterprise 'framework') which is supposed to support multiple 'plugins' from diffirent teams. Usually this ends up being a half baked solution that does not really work due to compatibility prolems between addins, or between addins and the framework itself. Usually this means QA have to 'rubber stamp' a global set of versions accross all plugins, or more usually plugins are released and stuff breaks in nasty ways. This problem has been solved before however, for example the package management systems like apt for debian linux. I suspect that the reason it works is that it is built from the start on a known 'Computer Science-y' concept. My question is what is it?

• In a multithreaded app, would a multi-core or multiprocessor arrangement be better?

  I've read a lot on this topic already both here (e.g., stackoverflow.com/questions/1713554/threads-processes-vs-multithreading-multi-core-multiprocessor-how-they-are or http://stackoverflow.com/questions/680684/multi-cpu-multi-core-and-hyper-thread) and elsewhere (e.g., ixbtlabs.com/articles2/cpu/rmmt-l2-cache.html or software.intel.com/en-us/articles/multi-core-introduction/), but I still am not sure about a couple things that seem very straightforward. So I thought I'd just ask. (1) Is a multi-core processor in which each core has dedicated cache effectively the same as a multiprocessor system (balanced of course for processor speed, cache size, and so on)? (2) Let's say I have some images to analyze (i.e., computer vision), and I have these images loaded into RAM. My app spawns a thread for each image that needs to be analyzed. Will this app on a shared cache multi-core processor run slower than on a dedicated cache multi-core processor, and would the latter run at the same speed as on an equivalent single-core multiprocessor machine? • In what areas might the use of F# be more appropriate than C#?

  Over the last few years F# has evolved into one of Microsoft's fully supported languages employing many ideas incubated in OCaml, ML and Haskell. Over the last several years C# has extended it's general purpose features by introducing more and more functional language features: LINQ (list comprehension), Lamdas, Closures, Anonymous Delegates and more... Given C#'s adoption of these functional features and F#'s taxonomy as an impure functional language (it allows YOU to access framework libraries or change shared state when a function is called if you want to) there is a strong similarity between the two languages although each has it's own polar opposite primary emphasis. I'm interested in any successful models employing these two languages in your production polyglot programs and also the areas within production software (web apps, client apps, server apps) you have written in F# in the past year or so that you would previously have written in C#. • Microsoft Business Intelligence Seminar 2011

  I was lucky enough to attend the maiden presentation of this at Microsoft Reading yesterday. It was pretty gripping stuff not only because of what was said but also because of what could only be hinted at. Here's what I took away from the day. (Disclaimer: I'm not a BI guru, just a reasonably experienced BI developer, so I may have misunderstood or misinterpreted a few things. Particularly when so much of the talk was about the vision and subtle hints of what is coming. Please comment if you think I've got anything wrong. I'm also not going to even try to cover Master Data Services as I struggled to imagine how you would actually use it.) I was a bit worried when I learned that the whole day was going to be presented by one guy but Rafal Lukawiecki is a very engaging speaker. He's going to be presenting this about 20 times around the world over the coming months. If you get a chance to hear him speak, I say go for it. No doubt some of the hints will become clearer as Denali gets closer to RTM. Firstly, things are definitely happening in the SQL Server Reporting and BI world. Traditionally IT would build a data warehouse, then cubes on top of that, and then publish them in a structured and controlled way. But, just as with many IT projects in general, by the time it's finished the business has moved on and the system no longer meets their requirements. This not sustainable and something more agile is needed but there has to be some control. Apparently we're going to be hearing the catchphrase 'Balancing agility with control' a lot. More users want more access to more data. Can they define what they want? Of course not, but they'll recognise it when they see it. It's estimated that only 28% of potential BI users have meaningful access to the data they need, so there is a real pent-up demand. The answer looks like: give them some self-service tools so they can experiment and see what works, and then IT can help to support the results. It's estimated that 32% of Excel users are comfortable with its analysis tools such as pivot tables. It's the power user's preferred tool. Why fight it? That's why PowerPivot is an Excel add-in and that's why they released a Data Mining add-in for it as well. It does appear that the strategy is going to be to use Reporting Services (in SharePoint mode), PowerPivot, and possibly something new (smiles and hints but no details) to create reports and explore data. Everything will be published and managed in SharePoint which gives users the ability to mash-up, share and socialise what they've found out. SharePoint also gives IT tools to understand what people are looking at and where to concentrate effort. If PowerPivot report X becomes widely used, it's time to check that it shows what they think it does and perhaps get it a bit more under central control. There was more SharePoint detail that went slightly over my head regarding where Excel Services and Excel Web Application fit in, the differences between them, and the suggestion that it is likely they will one day become one (but not in the immediate future). That basic pattern is set to be expanded upon by further exploiting Vertipaq (the columnar indexing engine that enables PowerPivot to store and process a lot of data fast and in a small memory footprint) to provide scalability 'from the desktop to the data centre', and some yet to be detailed advances in 'frictionless deployment' (part of which is about making the difference between local and the cloud pretty much irrelevant). Excel looks like becoming Microsoft's primary BI client. It already has: the ability to consume cubes strong visualisation tools slicers (which are part of Excel not PowerPivot) a data mining add-in PowerPivot A major hurdle for self-service BI is presenting the data in a consumable format. You can't just give users PowerPivot and a server with a copy of the OLTP database(s). Building cubes is labour intensive and doesn't always give the user what they need. This is where the BI Semantic Model (BISM) comes in. I gather it's a layer of metadata you define that can combine multiple data sources (and types of data source) into a clear 'interface' that users can work with. It comes with a new query language called DAX. SSAS cubes are unlikely to go away overnight because, with their pre-calculated results, they are still the most efficient way to work with really big data sets. A few other random titbits that came up: Reporting Services is going to get some good new stuff in Denali. Keep an eye on www.projectbotticelli.com for the slides. You can also view last year's seminar sessions which covered a lot of the same ground as far as the overall strategy is concerned. They plan to add more material as Denali's features are publicly exposed. Check out the PASS keynote address for a showing of Yahoo's SQL BI servers. Apparently they wheeled the rack out on stage still plugged in and running! Check out the Excel 2010 Data Mining Add-Ins. 32 bit only at present but 64 bit is on the way. There are lots of data sets, many of them free, at the Windows Azure Marketplace Data Market (where you can also get ESRI shape files). If you haven't already seen it, have a look at the Silverlight Pivot Viewer (http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2010/06/29/silverlight-pivotviewer-now-available.aspx). • Are government programming jobs good?

  I am a passionate software developer and greatly enjoy programming. However I was recently contacted regarding a developer lead position for a government job at NYC for the fire department. The pay is pretty good, and I would assume the position has good job security and stability. But I am hesitant to even go for an interview as it seems like an exaggerated version of Office Space with a lot of Bureaucracy and mindless paper work. The description is as follows: The Lead Applications Developer, supporting the Programming Group, will be responsible for all phases of the system development life cycle including performing system analysis, requirements definition, database design, preparation of scopes of work, and development of project plans. Supervise programming staff and manage projects involving the design, implementation, maintenance, and enhancement of complex Oracle based user applications using Oracle Development tools. Applications will be deployed using Oracle Application Server utilizing programming languages such as JAVA, JSF, JSP, Oracle ADF, PL/SQL, and XML with J2EE and EJB technology. Anyone with previous government experience can share their two cents on this? Thank you.

  i just tried to move from helios to maven with my gwt 2.4 application. so i began to follow the steps here: http://code.google.com/p/google-web-toolkit/wiki/WorkingWithMaven but on step 3 - installing the feature "m2e connector for build-helper-maven-plugin" i get an error from Eclipse: Cannot complete the install because one or more required items could not be found. • Why a very good PHP framework - Qcodo (or Qcubed - its branch) - is so unpopular?

  I am wondering why this framework (QCodo) is almost forgotten and totally unpopular. I've started using it a few years ago and it is the only thing that keeps me with PHP. Yeah ... its development is stuck (that's why there is now more active branch Qcubed) but it is still very good piece of software. Its main advantages: Event driven (something like asp.net) no spaghetti code Powerful code generation good ORM follows DRY very simple AJAX support is fun to write Since then I wanted to be trendy and checked Django but I cannot write normal request-based web application (it just doesn't feel right). Don't believe? chess.com is written with it and surely there are plenty others. My 2 questions are: Have you heard of it (PHP people)? If you are using it what is your opinion about it (show us examples of your work) Thanks

For that i have included the below line at the beginning of javascript. netscape.security.PrivilegeManager.enablePrivilege("UniversalXPConnect"); But when the above script executes, a dialog box appears saying **Internet security** A script from "file://" is requesting enhanced abilities that are UNSAFE and could be used to compromise your machine or data: Run or install software on your machine Allow these abilities only if you trust this source to be free of viruses or malicious programs. ______ _______ | Deny | | Allow | -------- --------- But i dont want the dialog box to be appeared.How can i avoid it?. • learning the Lower levels of computing

  I am a software developer with four years experience in .Net development, I always like to keep up to date with the latest technologies (.net related normally) being released and love learning them. I didn't however go to university and learnt all I know through helpful colleagues, .Net courses, the internet and good old books. I feel that I am a good developer, but without learning the lower levels of a computer as you would in the first year of a computer related Uni course, I get lost when talking to people about a lot of more technical lower level computing. Is there a book(s) that anyone could recommend, that would cover the lower levels of what is going on when I click "Run" in Visual Studio? I feel out of my depth when my boss says to me "Thats running in the CPU cache" or "you're limited by disk reads there", and would like to feel more confident when talking about how the hardware talks to each other (CPU to RAM etc). Apologise if thats a vague question, or has been asked before (i did check and couldn't find anything on here that answers my question).

  Are there any standard or "best practice" ways of limiting feature functionality for a particular application? Example: We have a product with a variety of features, and our customers can pick and choose which features they would like to use, and the cost of the product varies based on which features they are actually using. In the past, we have distributed along with our software installer an encrypted license file that contains information about the customer, as well as the collection of features that they have enabled. In code, we read from the license file and enable the functionality according to the license file. This seems to work fine, except there a few disadvantages: Upgrading users with new functionality can be sort of a pain If a particular feature shows up in multiple places throughout the application, a developer might not realize that this feature should be licensed, and forget to check the license file before granting functionality to the user If the license file becomes corrupted, deleted, moved, renamed, etc. the application will not run We're getting ready to roll out a new set of features, and I was just curious what others in the community have done to tackle this problem?

• Hadoop 0.2: How to read outputs from TextOutputFormat?

  My reducer class produces outputs with TextOutputFormat (the default OutputFormat given by Job). I like to consume this outputs after the MapReduce job complete to aggregate the outputs. In addition to this, I like to write out the aggregated information with TextInputFormat so that the output from this process can be consumed by the next iteration of MapReduce task. Can anyone give me an example on how to write & read with TextFormat? By the way, the reason why I am using TextFormat, rather Sequence, is the interoperability. The outputs should be consumed by any software.

• How prevalent is the use of Emacs' eshell in multi-platform development?

  I've only recently become aware of Emacs' eshell tool. It looks quite powerful in that it is entirely written in Emacs Lisp and does not require native subshell support. The Emacs info documentation is a bit sparse but EmacsWiki has pretty decent information, at least on a first glance. Given the potential value of eshell as a scripting tool/programmer's aid that works equally well on multiple platforms I'm wondering how prevalent the use of eshell versus the normal (bash) shell is among software developers. Would those of you who have taken the time to learn it recommend it or is it one of those many interesting ideas that did not really pan out?

• How long does a reverse DNS lookup take?

  How long should I expect a reverse lookup take? 100 milliseconds? 1 second? 10 second? 30 seconds? What's your experience? Why? We're debating adding a feature to our server software which would require a reverse DNS lookup each time a client connects. The lookup would be done synchronously, so I'm worried that it could slow connection-times down a lot. I just wanted to hear other people's experience regarding reverse DNS lookup times.

• Why does Google's closure library not use real private members?

  I've been a JavaScript developer for a while now, and I've always thought that the correct way to implement private members in JavaScript is to use the technique outlined by Doug Crockford here: http://javascript.crockford.com/private.html. I didn't think this was a particularly controversial piece of JavaScript wisdom, until I started using the Google Closure library. Imagine my surprise... the library makes no effort to use Crockford-style information hiding. All they do is use a special naming convention and note "private" members in the documentation. I'm in the habit of assuming that the guys at Google are usually on the leading edge of software quality, so what gives? Is there some downside to following Mr. Crockford's advice that's not obvious?

  Hello Again my fellow programmers out there, I'm designing and programming from scratch a online shop. It has a Module to manage "Orders" that are recieved via the frontend. I'm needing to have a status to know whats happening with an order in s certain moment, let's say the statuses are: Pending Payment Confirmed - Awaiting shipment Shipped Cancelled My question is a simple one, but is very important to decide on the store design, and is: What would you do so store this status: Would you create a column for it in the Orders table or would you just "calculate" the status of each order depending if payments has been recieved or shipments has been made for every order? (except I suppose for a is_cancelled column) What would be the best approach to model this kind of problem? PD: I even wish in the future to have these statuses configurable buy other clientes using the same software..

  I'm looking for options that allow very high-level web site development with these special characteristics: not requiring the user to program in a complex programming language not requiring the user to use GUI-like administration areas allow the user to "program" in a lightweight markup language The last point is not only about look and structure of the output but also about creating simple dynamic output. For example: listing pages fetching the content of other pages doing a site search and displaying its output dynamically show or hide parts of the page depending on login status Of course, I am not expecting a solution that provides the same possibilities like a Ruby, Python or PHP web framework. Rather I am looking for support of the "basics" that are common for web sites. Until now, I have found only one piece of software that fulfills these requirements but while it's free, it's not open source: BoltWire at http://www.boltwire.com/. Being open source is required.

  Hello, I was wondering if there is a library for editing program flow. I refer to conditions if, loops (do, while, for) and other elements that can exist inside a program. What I would like to have is some sort of a CAD application (similar to an UML editor) from where I can take some elements and edit their properties, make connections between them. Do you know similar software that does this, or resembles a little what I'm trying to achieve? Thanks, Iulian PS: It is something that should resemble this image. • image rendering issue

  I am running Apache/2.2.3 (CentOS). For some reason certain images, jpg, gif, or png will show up as byte code when accessed directly on the server. Firefox 3 and Safari both think the content type is text/html. IE I believe has something built in to recognize it is an image and ignore the content type and renders the image correctly regardless. I can't seem to find anyone else with this issue. An example of this can be found at http://www.thedacs.com/admin/gp/userfiles/image/gp28%5Fimg%5F01.jpg but the image below on same server the image is rendered correctly (use same path from above) Fig3mod.jpg The first image works fine in Photoshop CS, Illistrator, GIMP, Paint.net,and any other image editing software. I have tried everything when editing the images from trying multiple file formats to print screens and cropping to create a new image to lose old image meta data. Can anybody help?

For running a JAR file I am using a command-line window and executing the following command: java -jar helloworld.jar By using this command I can execute the JAR file. But instead of doing it in a command-line window, I want to execute the JAR file if I double click on the JAR file. I did some Google search for this. But I cannot do this. For this do I need to install any software? Can any one provide me help on this?
