• Running System Center Configuration Manager on a Domain Controller

  We are a smallish educational network (about 70 clients) with a single server running Windows Server 2008 Enterprise, functioning as both domain controller and file server. The educational pricing for Microsoft Forefront Endpoint Protection 2010 is irresistible as a managed anti-malware solution, but it requires System Center Configuration Manager 2007. I know best practice is not to run System Center Configuration Manager on a domain controller, but it's the only server I have to work with. Will installing SCCM on a domain controller cause problems? What conflicts might I need to take into account when planning deployment?

• Cannot view dates of emails(no date field), in my CSV file exported from MS Outlook

  I am using Outlook 2010 - I have my emails showing in there. and exported my emails, into a csv file. (file..options..advanced...export..export to a file.. I have opened that csv file in excel Here is a list of the fields it shows. I see "Date" doesn't appear among them. Also, (and less importantly, and as a very secondary issue) is there a convenient way to read the csv file? reading an email with a long body, in excel, is not convenient, I need to select all of the body from the cell and copy/paste it into notepad.

• google earth 7, 32bit in 12.10 runs without error but there is no image (globe)

  Everything seemed to install fine. I can start google earth and all layers are available, I can even zoom in and look at 3-D buildings. But there is absolutely no image data displayed at all. If you look at the whole globe the outlines are there on an invisible globe. As you zoom in the base looks dark grey almost black but there is no image. I have tried. • Cannot connect to FTP server from external host

  I have a FTP server (vsftpd) setuped on a Linux box (Ubuntu server). When I try to connect with a computer on the same network everything works fine as expected. But as soon the IP is external it won't connect.. I first assumed the port was blocked, but then: localserver:$ sudo tail -f /var/log/vsftpd.log Wed Jan 13 14:21:17 2010 [pid 2407] CONNECT: Client "xxx.xxx.107.4" remotemachine:$ netcat svn-motion.no-ip.biz 21 220 FTP Server And it hangs there .. • Time difference between servers after disaster recovery

  We are running an old training system based on Windows Server 2003 and XP-clients. The solution is rather simple with four servers, two of them beeing DC:s. Everything is preconfigured and that goes for backup scheme as well. The backup software is Symantec BackupExec 2010. The scheme is a standard GF-F-S routine with full backups running once a week on Sundays. The other six days run differential backups. Now let's say in a worst case scenario, a server crashes on Saturday and we have to restore it from backup. The last backup will then be six days old and thus it will come online with six days old configurations. Will this pose a problem for the other servers or will the recovered server "get in line" eventually?

• Prevent auto forwarding NDR loops

  a week ago we experienced a really sweet problem at a client of ours. They are a school with around 1200 users, and everyone of them has auto forwarding for all mail activated. We use Exchange 2010 Now a few of the users where able to make NDR loops by adding 2 different, wrong, destinations. We had around 80k mails sent within a few hours. Not very practical. My question is, does anyone know a good way to prevent something like this. I have found 2 ways, which both fail for their own reasons We could manage the auto forwarding on the exchange host itself, which should prevent this looping problem someone said. But 1200 Users, not on my watch. There is a Powershell script out in the wild which should work against that, but my employers want something more "professional" Thank you very much for your support Linus

  Do you prefer keeping your Taskbar hidden but still need to keep watch on what time it is? Now you can keep track of the time without the Taskbar using the Date Today extension for Google Chrome. A Look at Date Today with Different Themes This extension does one thing and does it well…it provides you with an “active icon” clock that will let you view the time and date in two fashions. The first is by hovering your mouse over the “Toolbar Clock Button”… And the second is by clicking on the “Toolbar Clock Button” to view an enlarged version. Here you can see the extension in use with five different themes to get an idea of how it might look with the theme that you are currently using. It does stand out very nicely with brighter or darker colored themes. Conclusion While this extension is obviously not for everyone it will make a nice (and useful) addition to Chrome for those who prefer keeping their Taskbar hidden. My actual problem is - I add a guy to my Junk blocked senders list (and I check it visually - it is in the list). But I keep receiving emails from this guy. It doesnt go to the Junk folder in Outlook. I need my Outlook to honor the rules locally at least. Is it possible?

• Reasons to Use a VM For Development

  Background: I work at a start-up company, where one team uses Virtual Machines to connect to a remote server to do their development, and another team (the team I'm on) uses local IIS/SQL Server 2005/Visual Studio installations to conduct work. Team VM is located about 1000 miles from Team Non-VM, and the servers the VMs run off of are located near Team VM (Latency, for those that are wondering, is about 50ms). A person high in the company is pushing for Team Non-VM to use virtual machines for programming, development, and testing. The latter point we agree on -- we want Virtual Machines to test configurations and various aspects of the web application in a 'clean' state. The Problem: What we don't agree on is having developers using RDP to connect to a desktop remotely that contains Visual Studio, SQL Server, and IIS to do the same development we could do locally on our laptops. I've tried the VM set-up, and besides the color issue, there is a latency issue that is rather noticeable, not to mention that since we're a start-up, a good number of employees work from home on occasion with our work laptops, and this move would cut off the laptops. They'd be turned in. Reasons to Use Remote VMs for Development (Not Testing!): Here are the stated reasons that this person wants us to use VMs: They work for TeamVM. They keep the source code "safe". If we want to work from home, we could just use our home PCs. Licenses (I don't know what the argument is, only that it's been used). Reasons not to use Remote VMs for Development: Here are the stated reasons why we don't want to use VMs: We like working from home. We get a lot done on our own time. We're not going to use our Home PCs to do work related stuff. The Latency is noticeable. Support for the VMs (if they go down, or if we need a new VM) takes a while. We don't have administrative privileges on the VM, and are unable to change settings as needed. What I'm looking for from the community is this: What reasons would you give for not using VMs for development? Keep in mind these are remote VMs -- this isn't a VM running on a local desktop. It's using the laptop (or a desktop) as a thin client for a remote VM. Also, on the other side of the coin: Is there something we're missing that makes VMs more palatable for development? Edit: I think 'safe' is used in term of corporate espionage, or more correctly if the Laptop gets stolen, the person who stole would have access to our source code. The former (as we've pointed out, is always going to be a possibility -- companies stop that with litigation, there isn't a technical solution (so far as I can see)). The latter point is ( though I don't know its usefulness in a corporate scenario) mitigated by Truecrypt'ing the entire volume.

I try copying music files from HD to 16 GB thumbdrive and get blue screen after a few files have transfered over to thumbdrive. Computer blinks once and boom - blue screen and then reboots. This is really aggravating. I stopped anti-virus, pulled other USB attached devices - still does same thing. Any solutions out there?

• Word to GIMP pasted image too small

  I paste an image from Microsoft Word 2010 into GIMP 2.6.10 using Edit ? Paste as ? New Image, but the pasted image is less than half-size (1280×800 down to 553×347). Pasting into an existing blank 1280×800 image makes no difference. On the other hand, pasting exactly the same clipboard entry into Windows Paint works beautifully, producing a razor-sharp 1280×800 image, and furthermore, pressing Ctrl+C in Paint, then going to Gimp and pressing Shift+Ctrl+V in Gimp produces the correct full-size image in Gimp too. Why does pasting an image directly from Word to Gimp reduce the image size? How can I make it paste the correct image size without having to go via Paint? UPDATE: I just noticed that cutting the image from Word and pasting back into the same document also loses definition. Paint must be magical.

  If you’re doing any work with networking, you probably need to know the name of your computer. Rather than diving into Control Panel, there’s a really simple way to do this from the command prompt. Note: If you haven’t already, be sure to read our complete guide to networking Windows 7 with XP and Vista. To see the hostname… all you have to do is type hostname at the command prompt. Go figure, eh? The same thing works in Linux or OS X, though you can see that most of the time the hostname is part of the prompt anyway. Note: you can also change the hostname by simply typing “hostname <newhostname>”. Of course, the easiest way to see your computer name in Windows is to just hit the Win+Break key combination, which will pop up the System pane from Control Panel.   If you want to change it instead, you can always change your computer name easily through Control Panel. • How do I turn off the click sound when closing a tab in chrome?

  Every time I close a tab in Chrome, it makes a click sound. How do I turn off that sound? I reported that issue back in Oct 2010. The problem doesn't appear on all clients and the reason is still unclear. Common attempts at solving the issue include simply turning off the sound in Windows. But I would prefer to solve the problem at the source. Why is Chrome even triggering that sound to be played? And why is it delayed? The problem would be far less annoying if the sound could easily be related to the action taken. Installing the Chrome Toolbox and muting all tabs has no effect on this issue. When switching to a different Chrome user profile, the new user profile does exhibit the same issue.

• How can I make Picasa see changes I make to photos using jhead?

  Last fall I forgot to set the time on my camera back an hour. I used jhead to change the time in the EXIF data: jhead -ta-1 IMG_1177.JPG but Picasa didn't notice. OS is Windows XP. If I right-click the picture in Picasa and choose Properties, in the top section of the dialog it shows "Date: 3/6/2010 11:22:54 AM" but in the Property|Value section it shows "Camera Date | 2010:03:06 10:22:54". I tried using "Refresh thumbnails" but that didn't help. Picasa notices other changes, like if I edit the photo in the Gimp or change the filename, but for some reason it doesn't notice this change.

• Persisting high score table in flash game without a network. (Featuring: HttpListenerException)

  Hi everyone, this question is very programming-centric, but it's for a game so I figured I might as well post it here. I'm doing polishing work on a GGJ '11 game because it will be shown at an indie arcade tomorrow afternoon, and they're expecting our final build in the morning. We'd like to have a high score table that displays during attract mode, but since it's Flash (Flixel) it would require some networking, Mochi, or something to keep a record of these scores. Only problem is the machine we'd be running on probably won't have network access. As a quick solution, I thought I'd just write up a dinky little high score server in C#/.NET that could take basic GET requests for submitting scores and getting the score list. We're talking REAL basic, like blocking while waiting for an incoming request, run & forget console app, etc. There's no guarantee that our .swf won't get reloaded, and we'd like the scores to persist, so this server would pretty much exists to keep a safe copy of the scores that the game can add to and request, and occasionally the server will write the scores to a flat text file. But, HttpListener is giving me Error Code 87 'The parameter is incorrect.' Have any idea what I'm doing wrong? Or better yet, am I barking up the wrong tree and missing an obviously simpler solution?
