• IE9 selectAllChildren on an out-of-view element

  I am trying to replicate a service that is provided by Tynt.com that appends some text to a user's selection when copying. I understand that users don't particularly like this, but it is a client's request to append the URL and copyright notice whenever a user copies something from their website. In current browsers, I am able to do this by creating a DOM element, adding the selected text, appending the copyright text and then selecting the new node: var newSelection = document.createElement( 'div' ); newSelection.style.cssText = "height: 1px; width: 1px; overflow: hidden;"; if( window.getSelection ) { var selection = window.getSelection( ); if( selection.getRangeAt ) { var range = selection.getRangeAt( 0 ); newSelection.appendChild( range.cloneContents( ) ); appendCopyright( ); document.body.appendChild( newSelection ); selection.selectAllChildren( newSelection ); // ... remove element, return selection } } In IE9, this errors out on the selection.selectAllChildren( newSelection ) statement and I was able to figure out that this is because newSelection was effectively "hidden" from the viewport due to the styles applied in the second line above. Commenting that out works, but obviously the new node is shown to the end user. It appears that this was resolved in later versions of IE, but I am having trouble coming up with a workaround that is sufficient for IE9, a browser that I need to support. I've tried a variety of alternatives, like setting visibility: hidden;, positioning it off-screen, and trying some alternative selection functions, but they each present different problems. The error thrown by IE is: SCRIPT16389: Unspecified error.

• Majordomo/Mailman - Yahoo/Google Groups

  Hi. Not an app question, but thought that I might ask here anyway! The responses might help someone. I've got an app where we're going to be dealing with 5000-10000 people in a group/pool. Periodically, different subsets of people will break off in their own group. I'm looking for thoughts on how to manage/approach this situation. (For now, all of this is being managed on a few servers in the garage, with dynamic IP) I've looked into the Yahoo/google groups, and they seem to be reasonable. The primary issue that I see with this approach, is that I don't have a good way of quickly/easily alowing a subset of the group to form their own group for a given project. This kind of function is critical. The upside to this though, I wouldn't have to really set anything up. And the hosted groups could send emails to the user all day along, without running into cap/bandwidth limits The other approach is a managed list, like mailman/majordomo. This approach appears to be more flexible, and looks like ti could be modified to handle the quick creation of lists, allowing users to quickly be assigned to different lists on the fly.. The downside, I'd have to run my own Mailman/Majordomo instance, as well as the associated mail server. Or I could look at possibly using one of the hosted service.. But this is for a project on the cheap, so we're really trying to keep costs down. Thoughts/Comments/Pointers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance -tom

  I'm designing a RESTful web service utilizing ROA(Resource oriented architecture). I'm trying to work out an efficient way to guarantee idempotence for PUT requests that create new resources in cases that the server designates the resource key. From my understanding, the traditional approach is to create a type of transaction resource such as /CREATE_PERSON. The the client-server interaction for creating a new person resource would be in two parts: Step 1: Get unique transaction id for creating the new PERSON resource::: **Client request:** GET /CREATE_PERSON **Server response:** 200 OK transaction-id:"as8yfasiob" Step 2: Create the new person resource in a request guaranteed to be unique by using the transaction id::: **Client request** PUT /CREATE_PERSON/{transaction_id} first_name="Big bubba" **Server response** 201 Created // (If the request is a duplicate, it would send this PersonKey="398u4nsdf" // same response without creating a new resource. It // would perhaps send an error response if the was used // on a transaction id non-duplicate request, but I have // control over the client, so I can guarantee that this // won't happen) The problem that I see with this approach is that it requires sending two requests to the server in order to do to single operation of creating a new PERSON resource. This creates a performance issues increasing the chance that the user will be waiting around for the client to complete their request. I've been trying to hash out ideas for eliminating the first step such as pre-sending transaction-id's with each request, but most of my ideas have other issues or involve sacrificing the statelessness of the application. Is there a way to do this?

• How to forward a 'saved' request stream to another Action within the same controller?

  We have a need to chunk-up large http requests sent by our mobile devices. These smaller chunk streams are merged to a file on the server. Once all chunks are received we need a way to submit the saved merged request to an another method(Action) within the same controller that will process this large http request. How can this be done? The code we tried below results in the service hanging. • Help with Custom Workflow that monitors an objects state

  I need to write a workflow that monitors the status of an object. (It could wait for days or hours for a state to change) I have the following states for the object (lets call it an Issue object): 1) Created 2) Unowned 3) Owned 4) UnAssigned 4) Assigned 6) In Progress 7) Signed Off 8) Closed I would also need to take some action on an object if the object was within a certain state for a defined period (not really sure on how this can be accomplished either). The object's owner/assignee can change at any point (i.e. Go from In Progress to UnOwned) so i am guessing that a state machine diagram is what i would need to use. If my thinking is incorrect then please let me know. My application is written in c# .net 3.5. I was thinking about having a service method called CreateIssue that would insert the ticket into the db and then begin an instance of a workflow (with the object or an id of the object as parameters). I wasn't sure of how the workflow would then know when a particular object has been updated, or if the object's state has changed. I've done some really simple "hello world" type of apps with windows workflow foundation 3.5 but have not yet grasped how to do go about implementing something like this. Any direction on this will be extremely helpful. Thanks in advance.

• Unusual request URL in ASP.NET health monitoring event

  I’m seeing a rather strange occurrence in the request information section of an ASP.NET health monitoring email I hope someone can shed some light on. This is a publicly facing website which runs on infrastructure at an Indian hosting provider. Health monitoring is notifying us of server errors via automated email but every now and then the requested URL appears as a totally different website. For example: Request information: Request URL: http://www.baidu.com/Default.aspx Request path: /Default.aspx User host address: 221.13.128.175 User: Is authenticated: False Authentication Type: Thread account name: NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE Obviously the site in question is not Baidu and obviously this attribute is not the referrer either; the “Request URL” value is the path which has generated the error. The IP address is located in Beijing (coincidental given the Baidu address?) and in this instance it looks like the SQL server backend was not accessible (I haven't included the entire error message for security's sake). What would cause the request URL attribute to be arbitrarily changed to that of another site? I’ve never seen this occur in a health monitoring event before. Thanks!

• Best way to manipulate and compare strings

  I'm developing a REST service, so a request could be something like this: /Data/Main/Table=Customers/ I need to get the segments one by one, and for each segment I will decide wich object I'm going to use, after I'll pass to that object the rest of the query so it can decide what to do next. Basically, the REST query is a path on a tree :P This imply lots String operations (depending on the query complexity), but StringBuilder is useful just for concatenations and remove, you cannot perform a search with IndexOf or similar. I've developed this class that fulfill my requirement, but the problem is that is manipulating Strings, so every time I get one segment ... Should I implement a class that manage a Char[] instead Strings and implement the methods that I want? Or should be ok with this one? Regular expressions maybe?

• How do you marshall a parameterized type with JAX-WS / JAXB?

So the Result returned by getTeachers() is serialized as containing a List<Person> instead of List<Teacher>, and the same for getStudents(), mutatis mutandis. Is this the expected behavior?   Does anyone know if this subversion "bug" has been dealt with? https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/subversion/tags/1.6.9/www/faq.html#windows-access-denied I'm getting occasional "Access Denied" errors on Windows. They seem to happen at random. Why? These appear to be due to the various Windows services that monitor the filesystem for changes (anti-virus software, indexing services, the COM+ Event Notification Service). This is not really a bug in Subversion, which makes it difficult for us to fix. A summary of the current state of the investigation is available here. A workaround that should reduce the incidence rate for most people was implemented in revision 7598; if you have an earlier version, please update to the latest release. Currently I am experiencing this same behavior in version 1.5.6 when I try and do a SVN switch (I have suspected McAfee as the culprit for a while and when I saw this I feel it validates my suspicions). I read through the link given but it seems pretty old, so I didn't know if this FAQ was just outdated and the issue has actually be resolved. Thanks for any help. • Sharepoint survey: How to identify the question fields when fetching survey information from the Lis

  I am wanting to access survey information via the Lists web service and display the questions contained in the survey. The result contains a large number of Field nodes some of which are the questions in the survey. The other fields contain other information such as author, last changed etc. How can I pick out the questions? I had thought that all non-questions would be hidden but this is not the case. Here is my code as it is at the moment. It returns about 16 items. • Silverlight performance with a large number of Objects Org Chart.

  Hello, I’m working on a org chart project(SL 3) and I’m seeing the UI thread hang when the chart is building around 2,000 nodes and when it renders it takes about a min and then FPS drop to a crawl. Here is the code flow. Page.xaml.cs calls a wcf service that returns a list of AD users. Then we use Linq to build a collection of nodes to bind to the Orgchart.cs OrgChart.cs is a canvas and displays a collection of nodes and connecting lines. Node.cs is a canvas and has user data can contain children nodes. NodeContent.xaml is a user control that has borders so I can set the background, textblocks to display user's data, Events that handle the selected and expaned nodes, and storyboards that resize the nodes when they are selected or expanded.I noticed during hours of debugging , here in the InitializeComponent(); section where it loads the xaml it seems to be where the preformance hit is happening. System.Windows.Application.LoadComponent(this, new System.Uri("/Silverlight.Custom;component/NodeContent.xaml", System.UriKind.Relative)); So I guess I have two questions. Can threading help in any way with the UI thread hanging while drawing the nodes? How can I avoid the hit when calling this user control? Any advice or direction anyone can lend would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, KC

• Strategies for Accessing a Application with a COM API From PHP

  Background: Experienced PHP developer with a mostly *nix background. I'm writing a PHP application that needs to interact with a proprietary 3rd party system. The 3rd party system is Windows only. The PHP application will be living on a separate Linux based system The 3rd party application has been described as having a "COM API" that I'll need to talk to from the PHP application. What does this look like architecturally speaking? I'm starting with the COM section of the PHP manual, but I have specific questions. Specific Questions: Can I talk directly to a COM API from a PHP application running on another server? If so, how? (what PHP extensions would I need, or what protocols/PHP functions would I be using to talk to the API) If the answer to number 2 is no, I'd assume I'd need some kind of application on the Windows machine that can talk to COM, and then a service on the windows machine I can hit with PHP. Are there prebuilt frameworks for this kind of thing? Is this all nonsense and/or did I say something exceedingly stupid? (Quite possible, as I'm a little fuzzy on what "COM" does and doesn't cover) I'm obviously not looking for a full solution here, I'm just trying to get a general idea of what is and isn't possible and what kind of things I'll want to Google for. • Archive log transfer from Oracle 9i to Oracle 10g

  Hi all, I have a situation where I need to transfer Oracle 9i archive logs to an Oracle 10g database, from where they are to be mined by a log-miner and then used by an Oracle streams capture/apply processes. (Oracle 9 archive logs can be read by the Oracle 10 logminer - I can manually copy the archive logs across, manually register them and have them mined, captured then applied). The difficulty is that the way Oracle does archive log transfer changed quite a bit between 9i and 10g and setting up the 9i database to transfer to the remote machine like so: log_archive_dest_state_2 = enable log_archive_dest_2 = "service=OTHERMACHINE arch optional" no longer works. I get this in the 9i logs: *** 2009-05-22 04:03:44.149 RFS network connection lost at host 'OTHERMACHINE' Error 3113 attaching RFS server to standby instance at host 'OTHERMACHINE' Error 3113 attaching to destination LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_2 standby host 'OTHERMACHINE' Heartbeat failed to connect to standby 'OTHERMACHINE'. Error is 3113. *** 2009-05-22 04:03:44.150 kcrrfail: dest:2 err:3113 force:0 ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel And in the 10g log I get: Fri May 22 04:07:42 2009 WARNING: inbound connection timed out (ORA-3136) My question is: Does anyone know how I could configure my 9i or 10g server such that the 10g server will accept the 9i connection in such a way that I can transfer the 9i archive logs to the 10g server. It would be a bonus if the archive logs would be automatically registered in the 10g server. Note I have not set up a full DataGuard configuration here and the 10g database is not a secondary server. Edit Note that I can log on to the 10g server from the 9i server via sqlplus, so connectivity is not the problem Edit 2 After a large amount of time searching for a solution, I've finally decided that such a mechanism doesn't work, and that a non-Oracle method of transferring archive logs from 9i to 10g will need to be used (e.g. rsync).

• Newbie question about Java

  Okay, I know that Java is a language but somebody has asked me if they can write a web application to interface in with a web app I've written in ASP.NET. I'm implementing a web service to serve up an XML so it's pretty language agnostic. However, I'm not 100% sure whether going down the Java route makes a lot of sense. I was kind of expecting PHP or ASP.NET server side code with maybe some Ajax/JavaScript or maybe a heavier client JavaScript program using JScript. Could some kind sole explain the basic Java environment when it comes with webapps. I've inferred the following - am I barking up the right tree? Java when run like ASP.NET is called JSP JavaBeans is a bit like the .NET framework, i.e. it's a library of re-usable components Java EE is a bit like ASP.NET in that it's a framework for building web pages on a server Java can also run on the client but it needs the Java VM installing When running Java on the client, can you use JavaBeans and is there a framework? Can it also use JScript? I don't think so as JScript is JavaScript library. Whilst running Java on the server would be okay, this is a relatively small application and therefore Java sounds like a bit of overkill. PHP or ASP.NET feels a better fit. But I don't think they should go down the Java applet in the browser and it adds complexity that's not needed. Thanks, Rob.

• BITS client fails to specify HTTP Range header

  Our system is designed to deploy to regions with unreliable and/or insufficient network connections. We build our own fault tolerating data replication services that uses BITS. Due to some security and maintenance requirements, we implemented our own ASP.NET file download service on the server side, instead of just letting IIS serving up the files. When BITS client makes an HTTP download request with the specified range of the file, our ASP.NET page pulls the demanded file segment into memory and serve that up as the HTTP response. That is the theory. ;) This theory fails in artificial lab scenarios but I would not let the system deploy in real life scenarios unless we can overcome that. Lab scenario: I have BITS client and the IIS on the same developer machine, so practically I have enormous network "bandwidth" and BITS is intelligent enough to detect that. As BITS client discovers the unlimited bandwidth, it gets more and more "greedy". At each HTTP request, BITS wants to grasp greater and greater file ranges (we are talking about downloading CD iso files, videos), demanding 20-40MB inside a single HTTP request, a size that I am not comfortable to pull into memory on the server side as one go. I can overcome that simply by giving less than demanded. It is OK. However, BITS gets really "confident" and "arrogant" demanding files WITHOUT specifying the download range, i.e., it wants the entire file in a single request, and this is where things go wrong. I do not know how to answer that response in the case of a 600MB file. If I just provide the starting 1MB range of the file, BITS client keeps sending HTTP requests for the same file without download range to continue, it hammers its point that it wants the entire file in one go. Since I am reluctant to provide the entire file, BITS gives up after several trials and reports error. Any thoughts?

When I run my code as a standard Java application or as a standard servlet, the XML is correctly generated: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <c:BroadsoftDocument protocol="OCI" xmlns:c="C"> <sessionId>000000001</sessionId> <command xsi:type="AuthenticationRequest" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"> <userId>admin</userId></command> </c:BroadsoftDocument> However, when the exact same code is run under Axis2 & Tomcat in a servlet I get: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <c:BroadsoftDocument protocol="OCI" xmlns:c="C"> <sessionId>000000001</sessionId> <command> <userId>admin</userId></command> </c:BroadsoftDocument> This of course isn’t valid – the xsi:type of the “command” element is stripped when the code is run under Tomcat. Does anyone have any suggestions of what I could be doing wrong that would cause this type of issue only when running under Axis2? At first I thought it was a Tomcat issue, but after creating a generic servlet and running the exact same code I don't have any issues. I've tried playing with the XMLOptions for XMLBeans, but couldn't seem to resolve the problem. The options I'm currently using are: xmlOptions = new XmlOptions(); xmlOptions.setCharacterEncoding("UTF-8"); xmlOptions.setUseDefaultNamespace(); xmlOptions.setSaveAggressiveNamespaces(); xmlOptions.setSavePrettyPrint();

• IncludeExceptionDetailInFaults not behaving as thought

  I have this simple test project just to test the IncludeExceptionDetailInFaults behavior. public class Service1 : IService1 { public string GetData(int value) { throw new InvalidCastException("test"); return string.Format("You entered: {0}", value); } } [ServiceContract] public interface IService1 { [OperationContract] string GetData(int value); } In the app.config of the service i have it set to true <serviceDebug includeExceptionDetailInFaults="True" /> On the client side: try { using (var proxy = new ServiceReference1.Service1Client()) Console.WriteLine(proxy.GetData(5)); } catch (Exception ex) { Console.WriteLine(ex.Message); } This is what I thought the behavior was: Setting to includeExceptionDetailInFaults=true would propagate the exception detail to the client. But I'm always getting the CommunicationObjectFaultException. I did try having the FaultContract(typeof(InvalidCastException)) on the contract but same behavior, only getting the CommunicationObjectFaultException. The only way to make it work was to throw new FaultException(new InvalidCastException("test")); But I thought with IncludeExceptionDetailInFaults=true the above was done automatically. Am I missing something?

• "QFontEngine(Win) GetTextMetrics failed ()" error on 64-bit Windows

  I'll add 500 of my own rep as a bounty when SO lets me. I'm using wkhtmltopdf to convert HTML web pages to PDFs. This works perfectly on my 32-bit dev server [unfortunately, I can't ship my machine :-p ]. However, when I deploy to the web application's 64-bit server the following errors are displayed: C:\>wkhtmltopdf http://www.google.com google.pdf Loading pages (1/5) QFontEngine::loadEngine: GetTextMetrics failed () ] 10% QFontEngineWin: GetTextMetrics failed () QFontEngineWin: GetTextMetrics failed () QFontEngine::loadEngine: GetTextMetrics failed () QFontEngineWin: GetTextMetrics failed () QFontEngineWin: GetTextMetrics failed () QFontEngineWin: GetTextMetrics failed () QFontEngine::loadEngine: GetTextMetrics failed () ] 36% QFontEngineWin: GetTextMetrics failed () QFontEngineWin: GetTextMetrics failed () // ...etc.... and the PDF is created and saved... just WITHOUT text. All form-fields, images, borders, tables, divs, spans, ps, etc are rendered accurately...just void of any text at all. Server information: Windows edition: Windows Server Standard Service Pack 2 Processor: Intel Xeon E5410 @ 2.33GHz 2.33 GHz Memory: 8.00 GB System type: 64-bit Operating System Can anyone give me a clue as to what is happening and how I can fix this? • Weblogic EJB calls start to fail under moderate load with OptionalDataException

  Our system setup consists of two Weblogic 10.3 servers: one hosts the presentation layer and the other hosts the EJBs. Booting the EJB server always temporarily resolves the issue, but the issue seems to occur again after some time. Any ideas?

• iPhone SQLite Password Field Encryption

  Good Afternoon Guys and Girls, Hopefully this will be a quick and easy question. I am building an App that requires the user to input their login details for an online service that it links to. Multiple login details can be added and saved as the user may have several accounts that they would like to switch between. These details will be stored in an SQLite database and will contain their passwords. Now the questions are: 1: Should these passwords be encrypted in the database? My instinct would say yes but then I do not know how secure the device and system is and if this is necessary. 2: If they should be encrypted what should I use? I think encrypting the whole database file sounds a bit over-kill so should I just encrypt the password before saving it to the database? If this is case what could I use to achieve this? I have found reference to a "crypt(3)" but am having trouble finding much about it or how to implement it. I eagerly await your replies!

• Extract <name> attribute from KML

  I am using OpenLayers for a mapping service. In which I have several KML layers that are using KML feeds from server to populate data on the map. It currently plots: images / points / vector lines & shapes. But on these points it will not add a label with the value of the for the placemark in the KML.
