• Simplest method of hiding sensitive information

  What is the simplest way I can hide a sensitive identifier, while providing some equivalent means of identifying the data from outside? For example, lets say I have a database table with records and one of them is an sensitive ID field. ID 2A 1S etc... then I want to have a second record: ID PublicID 2A AXXX44328 1S KKKZJSAAS such that when I am given a PublicID I can always determine what ID it refers to: H(PublicID) = ID but nobody else is able to do so. I suspect this is like, encryption - with throwing away a public key?

• Kernel dealing with the section headers in an ELF

  I recently read that the kernel and the dynamic loader mostly deal with the program header tables in an ELF file and that assemblers, compilers and linkers deal with the section header tables. The number of program header tables and section header tables are mentioned in the ELF header in fields named e_phnum and e_shnum respectively. e_phnum is two bytes in size, so if the number of program headers is 65535, we use a scheme known as extended numbering where, e_phnum is set to 0xffff and sh_link field of the zeroth section header table holds the actual count. My doubt is : If the count of program headers exceeds 65535, does that mean the kernel and/or the dynamic loader end up having to read the section table?

• where to store information like gender and year of birth?

  i have users and i need them to specify a gender (male, female) and year of birth (1930, 1931...1999, 2000). i wonder where i should store these values: in the database? in php file? if i store them in the database i have to manually create all entries first. but a good thing is that the user table will have constraints so the gender field will always be male or female, it cannot be something else. if i store them in the php file (eg. as html) then i can easily add/remove values. but a con is that i dont have the constraints in database, so another value could be stored as gender by mistake, even though i could add validation in php backend so even if someone hacked the html it is not stored unless it's either male or female. what is best practice to do this? thanks

• MySQL Rating system (calculating average from two tables).

  I have two tables, videos and videos_ratings. The videos table has an int videoid field (and many others but those fields are not important I think) and many records. The videos_ratings table has 3 int fields: videoid, rating, rated_by which has many records (multiple records for each fields from the videos table) but not for all records from the videos table. Currently I have the following mysql query: SELECT `videos`.*, avg(`videos_ratings`.`vote`) FROM `videos`, `videos_ratings` WHERE `videos_ratings`.`videoid` = `videos`.`videoid` GROUP BY `videos_ratings`.`videoid` ORDER BY RAND() LIMIT 0, 12 It selects all the records from table videos that have a rating in table video_ratings and calculates the average correctly. But what I need is to select all records from the videos table, no matter if there is a rating for that record or not. And if there aren't any records in the videos_ratings table for that particular videos record, the average function should show 0. Hope someone could understand what I want... :) Thanks!

• Are there libraries or techniques for collecting and weighing keywords from a block of text?

  I have a field in my database that can contain large blocks of text. I need to make this searchable but don't have the ability to use full text searching. Instead, on update, I want my business layer to process the block of text and extract keywords from it which I can save as searchable metadata. Ideally, these keywords could then be weighed based on the number of times they appear in the block of text. Naturally, words like "the", "and", "of", etc. should be discarded as they just add a lot of noise to the search. Are there tools or libraries in Python that can do this filtering or should I roll my own?

  I have a TabBar control which will show an AdvancedDataGrid with same set of columns on different tabs, i am doing this so that i can show similar data on different tab pages. Column heading will be the same on all grids, is there a way I can put all column headings in an array and set that as columns of data grid? I tried setting the columns property but it doesn't work. Also I need to set ID property for a single column in the grid to set it the treecolumn so one column must have individual id field too.

  Hello, I have 2 tables Table1 with columns [BId,Name,Amount] Table2 with columns [CId,BId, ExpenseType,Expense]. BId Is the foreign key in Table2. The Amount field in Table1 is always higher than Expense in Table2. I need to update the values of Amount (increase or decrease) based on value of Expense and I want to do it in single query in LINQ. Eg If the Expense has to be updated with 200, I would decrease(negate) Amount value with 200. If Expense is reduce to 100 then the Amount is increased by a value of 100. • Unable to bind in asp.net grid Template Column

  I am having trouble accessing the data field. I receive the error: Databinding methods such as Eval(), XPath(), and Bind() can only be used in the context of a databound control. I can get the value but using <%# getOpenJobs((string)Eval("ParentPart")) % but I need to use it in the if to display a certian picture if it passes the condition. • Ruby on Rails: Is there a way to tell what fields failed validation in ActiveRecord?

  I'm attempting to create an XML builder file that tells a user to know exactly what fields failed validation in the output. I also want to display their input back to them, so that requires me figuring out which fields failed validation. Meaning if someone fails on creating a new user resource, I want to display XML that's meaningful (Besides a meaningful HTTP status number) such as: <errors> <user> <email>bad@email: Invalid email format</email> </user> <errors> The above is tough to do in an XML builder file without knowing what field failed. And if I just iterate over error messages, I won't know how to prob my @user object to get the value that the user supplied.

I'm still getting used to all the web technologies used for developing modern web sites and everywhere I look, I see cool little UI elements and question how they're implemented. Unfortunately, the shell is collapsing together field separators which are next to each other, as so: # IFS=$'\t' # read one two three <<<$'one\t\tthree' # printf '<%s> ' "$one" "$two" "$three"; printf '\n' <one> <three> <> ...as opposed to the desired output of <one> <> <three>. Can this be resolved without resorting to a separate language (such as awk)?

  I'm just getting started with Groovy/Grails. I added a new domain controller to my project, and generate-controller doesn't like it. There are other indications something's wrong: If I run the app no table is actually created in the database for this. I've reduced the DomainController to one String field and no constraints, just to make sure there wasn't something wrong with my specification. I also tried renaming it, just in case there was something about the original name (Privacy) that conflicted with something. I'm sure I have the correct name, and that the file is called PrivacyOptions.groovy and inside the class is also called PrivacyOptions.   Like in Oracle VARCHAR( 60 CHAR ) I would like to specify a varchar field with variable length depending on the inserted characters. for example: create table X (text varchar(3)) insert into X (text) VALUES ('äöü') Should be possible (with UTF8 as the default charset of the database). On DB2 I got this Error: DB2 SQL Error: SQLCODE=-302, SQLSTATE=22001 (Character data, right truncation occurred; for example, an update or insert value is a string that is too long for the column, or a datetime value cannot be assigned to a host variable, because it is too small.) I'm looking for solutions for DB2, MsSql, MySql, Hypersonic.

• using dummy row with NOT NULL to solve DEFAUT NULL

  I know having DEFAULT NULLS is not a good practice but I have many optional lookup values which are FK in the system so to solve this issue here is what i am doing: I use NOT NULL for every FK / lookup valve field. I have the first row in every table which is PK id = 1 as a dummy row with just "none" in all the columns. this way I can use NOT NULL in my schema and if needed reference to the none row values which should be null. Is this a good design or any other work arounds?

  I'm working on a C# program that deals with Oracle Spatial geometry. When circle data is stored in a geometry field only three non-collinear points are stored to represent the circle. The problem is that I need to use this data on a Google Maps web page and need the center point and radius of the circle (since my circle drawing function uses that information). Can anyone help with the math involved and translating said math to C#? I think this page may hold the answer, but I'm having a hard time following it. There are formulas for radius and center given three points, but then they define the variables as matrices and I get lost at that point. How would I solve that in code?

  A company is hired by another company for helping in a certain field. So I created the following tables: Companies: id, company name, company address Administrators: (in relation with companies) id, company_id, username, email, password, fullname Then, each company has some workers in it, I store data about workers. Hence, workers has a profession, Agreement Type signed and some other common things. Now, the parent tables and data in it for workers (Agreement Types, Professions, Other Common Things) are going to be the same for each company. Should I create 1 new database for each company? Or store All data into the same database? Thanks.

  I'm quite interested in automatic images translation to 3d models. Not really for commercial product, but from the point of possible academic research and implementation. What I'd like to achieve is almost transparent for user process of transformation series of images (fewer is better) to 3d model which might be shown in flash/silverlight/javafx or similar. Consider online furniture store with 3d models of all items in stock. Kinda cool to have ability to see the product in 3d before purchasing it. I managed to find a few pieces of software, like insight3d, but it couldn't be used in my case I guess. So, are there any similar projects or tips for me? If it would require to write that piece of software - I'd really love to dig into research on this field.

In the game.start() I run many processes and give them a reference to the corresponding log. So, I expect that manager1 and manager2 will write to different files. But manager2 writes to its own file and to the log file of the manager1. Why can it happen?
