• Consuming ASP.NET Web API services from PHP script

  I introduced ASP.NET Web API in some of my previous posts. Although Web API is easy to use in ASP.NET web applications you can use Web API also from other platforms. This post shows you how to consume ASP.NET Web API from PHP scripts. Here are my previous posts about Web API: How content negotiation works? ASP.NET Web API: Extending content negotiation with new formats Query string based content formatting Although these posts cover content negotiation they give you some idea about how Web API works. Test application On Web API side I use the same sample application as in previous Web API posts – very primitive web application to manage contacts. Same way we can use also platforms like Java, PERL and Ruby.

  In part one, I introduced the security features and talked about the default behavior.  In part two, I defined the two major approaches to security credentials: directly using database credentials and mapping WLS user credentials to database credentials.  Now it's time to get down to a couple of the security options (each of which can use database credentials or WLS credentials). The Set Client Identifier feature is only available for use with the Oracle thin driver and the IBM DB2 driver, based on the following interfaces. For pre-Oracle 12c, oracle.jdbc.OracleConnection.setClientIdentifier(client) is used.  See http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B28359_01/network.111/b28531/authentication.htm#i1009003 for more information about how to use this for auditing and debugging.   You can get the value using getClientIdentifier()  from the driver.  To get back the value from the database as part of a SQL query, use a statement like the following. “select sys_context('USERENV','CLIENT_IDENTIFIER') from DUAL”. Starting in Oracle 12c, java.sql.Connection.setClientInfo(“OCSID.CLIENTID", client) is used.  This is a JDBC standard API, although the property values are proprietary.  A problem with setClientIdentifier usage is that there are pieces of the Oracle technology stack that set and depend on this value.  If application code also sets this value, it can cause problems. This has been addressed with setClientInfo by making use of this method a privileged operation. A well-managed container can restrict the Java security policy grants to specific namespaces and code bases, and protect the container from out-of-control user code. When running with the Java security manager, permission must be granted in the Java security policy file for permission "oracle.jdbc.OracleSQLPermission" "clientInfo.OCSID.CLIENTID"; Using the name “OCSID.CLIENTID" allows for upward compatible use of “select sys_context('USERENV','CLIENT_IDENTIFIER') from DUAL” or use the JDBC standard API java.sql.getClientInfo(“OCSID.CLIENTID") to retrieve the value. This value in the Oracle USERENV context can be used to drive the Oracle Virtual Private Database (VPD) feature to create security policies to control database access at the row and column level. Essentially, Oracle Virtual Private Database adds a dynamic WHERE clause to a SQL statement that is issued against the table, view, or synonym to which an Oracle Virtual Private Database security policy was applied.  See Using Oracle Virtual Private Database to Control Data Access http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B28359_01/network.111/b28531/vpd.htm for more information about VPD.  Using this data source feature means that no programming is needed on the WLS side to set this context; it is set and cleared by the WLS data source code. For the IBM DB2 driver, com.ibm.db2.jcc.DB2Connection.setDB2ClientUser(client) is used for older releases (prior to version 9.5).  This specifies the current client user name for the connection. Note that the current client user name can change during a connection (unlike the user).  This value is also available in the CURRENT CLIENT_USERID special register.  You can select it using a statement like “select CURRENT CLIENT_USERID from SYSIBM.SYSTABLES”. When running the IBM DB2 driver with JDBC 4.0 (starting with version 9.5), java.sql.Connection.setClientInfo(“ClientUser”, client) is used.  You can retrieve the value using java.sql.Connection.getClientInfo(“ClientUser”) instead of the DB2 proprietary API (even if set setDB2ClientUser()).  Oracle Proxy Session Oracle proxy authentication allows one JDBC connection to act as a proxy for multiple (serial) light-weight user connections to an Oracle database with the thin driver.  You can configure a WebLogic data source to allow a client to connect to a database through an application server as a proxy user. The client authenticates with the application server and the application server authenticates with the Oracle database. This allows the client's user name to be maintained on the connection with the database. Use the following steps to configure proxy authentication on a connection to an Oracle database. 1. If you have not yet done so, create the necessary database users. 2. On the Oracle database, provide CONNECT THROUGH privileges. For example: SQL> ALTER USER connectionuser GRANT CONNECT THROUGH dbuser; where “connectionuser” is the name of the application user to be authenticated and “dbuser” is an Oracle database user. 3. Create a generic or GridLink data source and set the user to the value of dbuser. 4a. To use WLS credentials, create an entry in the credential map that maps the value of wlsuser to the value of dbuser, as described earlier.   4b. To use database credentials, enable “Use Database Credentials”, as described earlier. 5. Enable Oracle Proxy Authentication, see "Configure Oracle parameters" in Oracle WebLogic Server Administration Console Help. 6. Log on to a WebLogic Server instance using the value of wlsuser or dbuser. 6. Get a connection using getConnection(username, password).  The credentials are based on either the WebLogic user that is mapped to a database user or the database user directly, based on the “use database credentials” setting.  You can see the current user and proxy user by executing: “select user, sys_context('USERENV','PROXY_USER') from DUAL". Note: getConnection fails if “Use Database Credentials” is not enabled and the value of the user/password is not valid for a WebLogic Server user.  Conversely, it fails if “Use Database Credentials” is enabled and the value of the user/password is not valid for a database user. A proxy session is opened on the connection based on the user each time a connection request is made on the pool. The proxy session is closed when the connection is returned to the pool.  Opening or closing a proxy session has the following impact on JDBC objects. - Closes any existing statements (including result sets) from the original connection. - Clears the WebLogic Server statement cache. - Clears the client identifier, if set. -The WebLogic Server test statement for a connection is recreated for every proxy session. These behaviors may impact applications that share a connection across instances and expect some state to be associated with the connection. Oracle proxy session is also implicitly enabled when use-database-credentials is enabled and getConnection(user, password) is called,starting in WLS Release 10.3.6.  Remember that this only works when using the Oracle thin driver. To summarize, the definition of oracle-proxy-session is as follows. - If proxy authentication is enabled and identity based pooling is also enabled, it is an error. - If a user is specified on getConnection() and identity-based-connection-pooling-enabled is false, then oracle-proxy-session is treated as true implicitly (it can also be explicitly true). - If a user is specified on getConnection() and identity-based-connection-pooling-enabled is true, then oracle-proxy-session is treated as false.

• SPF record doesn't work (not sure which DNS server to tweak)

  Problem: Google (and perhaps others) marks our emails as SPF neutral. Let me give you some background about the setup: initially got a dedicated server (Hetzner) with Plesk installed to host a domain/web application, let's say: bigjaws.com. Plesk automatically creates a DNS zone for it with some records for the various services it provides out of the box, e.g. webmail.bigjaws.com as a CNAME to bigjaws.com to provide Horde/whatever, etc. Let me point out four relevant of these records (where XXX.XXX.XXX.158 is our dedicated IP): bigjaws.com. A XXX.XXX.XXX.158 mail.bigjaws.com. A XXX.XXX.XXX.158 bigjaws.com MX (10) mail.bigjaws.com. bigjaws.com. TXT v=spf1 +a +mx -all The above records are not(?) valid anymore though, because after using this dedicated server for a while, our site got bigger and bigger so we decided to move our operations over to AWS (EC2, RDS, ELB, etc), but we retained the mail functionality as is, i.e. emails from [email protected] are sent by connecting to our dedicated server where Plesk takes care of things. This was decided in order not to setup anything from scratch. Of course for all DNS-related things we now use Route53. In Route53 I have the following records: mail.schoox.com. A XXX.XXX.XXX.158 bigjaws.com. MX (10) mail.bigjaws.com bigjaws.com. SPF "v=spf1 +ip4:XXX.XXX.XXX.158 +mx ~all" From my understanding of SPF, the SPF status should have been passed: I designate that all email being sent by bigjaws.com from XXX.XXX.XXX.158 are valid/not spam (I added +mx there but I'm not sure if needed). When a mail server receives an email, doesn't it lookup the SPF record of the domain and checks against the IP it got the email from? Checking with spfquery: root@box:~# spfquery -ip XXX.XXX.XXX.158 -sender [email protected] -rcpt-to [email protected] StartError Context: Failed to query MAIL-FROM ErrorCode: (2) Could not find a valid SPF record Error: No DNS data for 'bigjaws.com'. The domain bigjaws.com has authorized static.158.XXX.XXX.XXX.clients.your-server.de (XXX.XXX.XXX.158) to send mail on its behalf, so the message should have been accepted. It is impossible for us to say why it was rejected. What should I do? If the problem persists, contact the bigjaws.com postmaster. Also, here are some headers from an email sent by one of our [email protected] addresses to a gmail.com address (by the way, bigjaws.de listed in the "Received: from" field was the initial domain hosted on the dedicated server before adding the .com one -- both are still listed as separate subscriptions under Plesk). I have implemented a 2D camera, its always centered on the player. However, when i move towards the bounds of the world that the sprite is in it just keeps on going :( How to i sort it that it stops at the edge of the world and cant go beyond it? • Generating radial indicator images using C#

  In one of my projects I needed to draw radial indicators for processes measured in percent. Simple images like the one shown on right. I solved the problem by creating images in C# and saving them on server hard disc so if image is once generated then it is returned from disc next time. I am not master of graphics or geometrics but here is the code I wrote. Drawing radial indicator To get things done quick’n’easy way – later may some of younger developers be the one who may need to changes things – I divided my indicator drawing process to four steps shown below. 1. Fill pie 2. Draw circles 3. Fill inner circle 4. • OpenVPN (HideMyAss) client on Ubuntu: Route only HTTP traffic

  I want to use HideMyAss VPN (hidemyass.com) on Ubuntu Linux to route only HTTP (ports 80 & 443) traffic to the HideMyAss VPN server, and leave all the other traffic (MySQL, SSH, etc.) alone. I'm running Ubuntu on AWS EC2 instances. The problem is that when I try and run the default HMA script, I suddenly can't SSH into the Ubuntu instance anymore and have to reboot it from the AWS console. I suspect the Ubuntu instance will also have trouble connecting to the RDS MySQL database, but haven't confirmed it. • C# 2D Camera Max Zoom

  I have a simple ship sprite moving around the screen along with a 2D Camera. I have zooming in and out working, however when I zoom out it goes past the world bounds and has the cornflower blue background showing. How do I sort it that I can only zoom out as far as showing the entire world (which is a picture of OZ) and thats it? I dont want any of the cornflower blue showing. • Maintenance plans love story

  There are about 200 QA and DEV SQL Servers out there.  There is a maintenance plan on many of them that performs a backup of all databases and removes the backup history files. First of all, I must admit that I’m no big fan of maintenance plans in particular or the SSIS packages in general.  In this specific case, if I ever need to change anything in the way backup is performed, such as the compression feature or perform some other change, I have to open each plan one by one. This is quite a pain. Therefore, I have decided to replace the maintenance plans with a stored procedure that will perform exactly the same thing.  Having such a procedure will allow me to open multiple server connections and just execute an ALTER PROCEDURE whenever I need to change anything in it. There is nothing like good ole T-SQL. The first challenge was to remove the unneeded maintenance plans. Of course, I didn’t want to do it server by server.  I found the procedure msdb.dbo.sp_maintplan_delete_plan, but it only has a parameter for the maintenance plan id and it has no other parameters, like plan name, which would have been much more useful. Now I needed to find the table that holds all maintenance plans on the server. You would think that it would be msdb.dbo.sysdbmaintplans but, unfortunately, regardless of the number of maintenance plans on the instance, it contains just one row.    After a while I found another table: msdb.dbo.sysmaintplan_subplans. It contains the plan id that I was looking for, in the plan_id column and well as the agent’s job id which is executing the plan’s package: That was all I needed and the rest turned out to be quite easy.  Here is a script that can be executed against hundreds of servers from a multi-server query window to drop the specific maintenance plans. • EF4 POCO WCF Serialization problems (no lazy loading, proxy/no proxy, circular references, etc)

  OK, I want to make sure I cover my situation and everything I've tried thoroughly. I'm pretty sure what I need/want can be done, but I haven't quite found the perfect combination for success. I'm utilizing Entity Framework 4 RTM and its POCO support. I'm looking to query for an entity (Config) that contains a many-to-many relationship with another entity (App). I turn off lazy loading and disable proxy creation for the context and explicitly load the navigation property (either through .Include() or .LoadProperty()). However, when the navigation property is loaded (that is, Apps is loaded for a given Config), the App objects that were loaded already contain references to the Configs that have been brought to memory. This creates a circular reference. Now I know the DataContractSerializer that WCF uses can handle circular references, by setting the preserveObjectReferences parameter to true. I've tried this with a couple of different attribute implementations I've found online. It is needed to prevent the "the object graph contains circular references and cannot be serialized" error. However, it doesn't prevent the serialization of the entire graph, back and forth between Config and App. If I invoke it via WcfTestClient.exe, I get a stackoverflow (ha!) exception from the client and I'm hosed. I get different results from different invocation environments (C# unit test with a local reference to the web service appears to work ok though I still can drill back and forth between Configs and Apps endlessly, but calling it from a coldfusion environment only returns the first Config in the list and errors out on the others.) My main goal is to have a serialized representation of the graph I explicitly load from EF (ie: list of Configs, each with their Apps, but no App back to Config navigation.) NOTE: I've also tried using the ProxyDataContractResolver technique and keeping the proxy creation enabled from my context. This blows up complaining about unknown types encountered. I read that the ProxyDataContractResolver didn't fully work in Beta2, but should work in RTM. I know it's a lot of information, but it's really standing in my way of going forward with EF4/POCO in our system. I've found several articles and blogs touching upon these subjects, but for the life of me, I cannot resolve this issue. Feel free to simply ask questions and help me brainstorm this situation. PS: For the sake of being thorough, I am injecting the WCF services using the HEAD build of Spring.NET for the fix to Spring.ServiceModel.Activation.ServiceHostFactory. However I don't think this is the source of the problem.

• SMO ConnectionContext.StatementTimeout setting is ignored

  I am successfully using Powershell with SMO to backup most databases. However, I have several large databases in which I receive a "timeout" error "System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired". The timout consistently occurs at 10 minutes. I have tried setting ConnectionContext.StatementTimeout to 0, 6000, and to [System.Int32]::MaxValue. The setting made no difference. I have found a number of Google references which indicate setting it to 0 makes it unlimited. No matter what I try, the timeouts consistently occur at 10 minutes. I even set Remote Query Timeout on the server to 0 (via Studio Manager) to no avail. Below is my SMO connection where I set the time out and the actual backup function. Further below is the output from my script. UPDATE Interestingly enough, I wrote the backup function in C# using VS 2008 and the timeout override does work within that environment. I am in the process of incorporating that C# process into my Powershell Script until I can find out why the timeout override does not work with just Powershell. • WCF Publish/Subscribe and using callbacks to send data to specific users

  Hello thanks for looking, I'm working on a project at the moment and have become a little stuck. I'm creating a client server app, which allows a client to subscribe to the server to have messages forwarded to it. The issue I'm having is that when the client subscribes I wish for them to only recieve updates that relate to them. The system basically passes messages from a SQL server DB which the server monitors. When a new message is recieved the server should only forward the message to the clients that it applys to, based on whos logged on the client machine. I've had a look and found code samples which sign up for messages to be broadcast across all clients who have subscribed, but not any that show how to identify individual clients and if messages apply to them. If anyone could help or point me in the right direction it would be appreciated. • Fixing predicated NSFetchedResultsController/NSFetchRequest performance with SQLite backend?

  I have a series of NSFetchedResultsControllers powering some table views, and their performance on device was abysmal, on the order of seconds. Since it all runs on main thread, it's blocking my app at startup, which is not great. I investigated and turns out the predicate is the problem: NSPredicate *somePredicate = [NSPredicate predicateWithFormat:@"ANY somethings == %@", something]; [fetchRequest setPredicate:somePredicate]; I.e the fetch entity, call it "things", has a many-to-many relation with entity "something". This predicate is a filter that limits the results to only things that have a relation with a particular "something". When I removed the predicate for testing, fetch time (the initial performFetch: call) dropped (for some extreme cases) from 4 seconds to around 100ms or less, which is acceptable. I am troubled by this, though, as it negates a lot of the benefit I was hoping to gain with Core Data and NSFRC, which otherwise seems like a powerful tool. So, my question is, how can I optimize this performance? Am I using the predicate wrong? Should I modify the model/schema somehow? And what other ways there are to fix this? Is this kind of degraded performance to be expected? (There are on the order of hundreds of <1KB objects.) • Perl Scripts Seem to be Caching?

  I'm running a perl script via mod_perl with Apache. I am trying to parse parameters in a restful fashion (aka GET www.domain.com/rest.pl/Object/ID). If I specify the ID like this: GET www.domain.com/rest.pl/Object/1234 I will get object 1234 back as a result as expected. However, if I specify an incorrect hacked url like this GET www.domain.com/rest.pl/Object/123 I will also get back object 1234. I am pretty sure that the issue in this question is happening so I packaged up my method and invoked it from my core script out of the package. Even after that I am still seeing the threads returning seemingly cached data. One of the recommendations in the aforementioned article is to replace my with our. My impression from reading up on our vs my was that our is global and my is local. My assumption is the the local variable gets reinitialized each time. That said, like in my code example below I am resetting the variables each time with new values. • Migrate from MySQL to PostgreSQL on Linux (Kubuntu)

  A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away... Trying to migrate a database from MySQL to PostgreSQL. All the documentation I have read covers, in great detail, how to migrate the structure. I have found very little documentation on migrating the data. The schema has 13 tables (which have been migrated successfully) and 9 GB of data. MySQL version: 5.1.x PostgreSQL version: 8.4.x I want to use the R programming language to analyze the data using SQL select statements; PostgreSQL has PL/R, but MySQL has nothing (as far as I can tell). A New Hope Create the database location (/var has insufficient space; also dislike having the PostgreSQL version number everywhere -- upgrading would break scripts!): sudo mkdir -p /home/postgres/main sudo cp -Rp /var/lib/postgresql/8.4/main /home/postgres sudo chown -R postgres.postgres /home/postgres sudo chmod -R 700 /home/postgres sudo usermod -d /home/postgres/ postgres All good to here.   Hallo, I have a problem. I'am trying to get some data from my database. But with a limit. So i use the selectLimit command. • Perl CGI that sends a temporary loading page to client then later sends the actual results page

  I've wasted at least a half day of my company's time searching the Internet for an answer and I'm getting wrapped around the axle here. I can't figure out the difference between all the different technology choices (long polling, ajax streaming, comet, XMPP, etc.) and I can't get a simple hello world example working on my PC. I am running Apache 2.2 and ActivePerl 5.10.0. JavaScript is completely acceptable for this solution. All I want to do is write a simple Perl CGI script that when accessed, it immediately returns some HTML that tells the user to wait or maybe sends an animated GIF. Then without any user intervention (no mouse clicks or anything) I want the CGI script to at some time later replace the wait message or the animated GIF with the actual HTML results from their query. I know this is simple stuff and websites do it all the time, but I can't find a single working example that I can cut and paste onto my machine that will work. Here is my simple Hello World example that I've compiled from various Internet sources, but it doesn't seem to work. When I refresh this CGI URL in my web browser it prints nothing for 5 seconds, then it prints the PLEASE BE PATIENT web page, but not the results web page. • Best practices for using the Entity Framework with WPF DataBinding

  I'm in the process of building my first real WPF application (i.e., the first intended to be used by someone besides me), and I'm still wrapping my head around the best way to do things in WPF. It's a fairly simple data access application using the still-fairly-new Entity Framework, but I haven't been able to find a lot of guidance online for the best way to use these two technologies (WPF and EF) together. So I thought I'd toss out how I'm approaching it, and see if anyone has any better suggestions. I'm using the Entity Framework with SQL Server 2008. The EF strikes me as both much more complicated than it needs to be, and not yet mature, but Linq-to-SQL is apparently dead, so I might as well use the technology that MS seems to be focusing on. This is a simple application, so I haven't (yet) seen fit to build a separate data layer around it. When I want to get at data, I use fairly simple Linq-to-Entity queries, usually straight from my code-behind, e.g.: var families = from family in entities.Family.Include("Person") orderby family.PrimaryLastName, family.Tag select family; Linq-to-Entity queries return an IOrderedQueryable result, which doesn't automatically reflect changes in the underlying data, e.g., if I add a new record via code to the entity data model, the existence of this new record is not automatically reflected in the various controls referencing the Linq query. Consequently, I'm throwing the results of these queries into an ObservableCollection, to capture underlying data changes: familyOC = new ObservableCollection<Family>(families.ToList()); I then map the ObservableCollection to a CollectionViewSource, so that I can get filtering, sorting, etc., without having to return to the database. familyCVS.Source = familyOC; familyCVS.View.Filter = new Predicate<object>(ApplyFamilyFilter); familyCVS.View.SortDescriptions.Add(new System.ComponentModel.SortDescription("PrimaryLastName", System.ComponentModel.ListSortDirection.Ascending)); familyCVS.View.SortDescriptions.Add(new System.ComponentModel.SortDescription("Tag", System.ComponentModel.ListSortDirection.Ascending)); I then bind the various controls and what-not to that CollectionViewSource: <ListBox DockPanel.Dock="Bottom" Margin="5,5,5,5" Name="familyList" ItemsSource="{Binding Source={StaticResource familyCVS}, Path=., Mode=TwoWay}" IsSynchronizedWithCurrentItem="True" ItemTemplate="{StaticResource familyTemplate}" SelectionChanged="familyList_SelectionChanged" /> When I need to add or delete records/objects, I manually do so from both the entity data model, and the ObservableCollection: private void DeletePerson(Person person) { entities.DeleteObject(person); entities.SaveChanges(); personOC.Remove(person); } I'm generally using StackPanel and DockPanel controls to position elements. Sometimes I'll use a Grid, but it seems hard to maintain: if you want to add a new row to the top of your grid, you have to touch every control directly hosted by the grid to tell it to use a new line. Uggh. (Microsoft has never really seemed to get the DRY concept.) I almost never use the VS WPF designer to add, modify or position controls. The WPF designer that comes with VS is sort of vaguely helpful to see what your form is going to look like, but even then, well, not really, especially if you're using data templates that aren't binding to data that's available at design time. If I need to edit my XAML, I take it like a man and do it manually. Most of my real code is in C# rather than XAML. As I've mentioned elsewhere, entirely aside from the fact that I'm not yet used to "thinking" in it, XAML strikes me as a clunky, ugly language, that also happens to come with poor designer and intellisense support, and that can't be debugged. Uggh. Consequently, whenever I can see clearly how to do something in C# code-behind that I can't easily see how to do in XAML, I do it in C#, with no apologies. There's been plenty written about how it's a good practice to almost never use code-behind in WPF page (say, for event-handling), but so far at least, that makes no sense to me whatsoever. Why should I do something in an ugly, clunky language with god-awful syntax, an astonishingly bad editor, and virtually no type safety, when I can use a nice, clean language like C# that has a world-class editor, near-perfect intellisense, and unparalleled type safety? So that's where I'm at. Any suggestions? Am I missing any big parts of this? Anything that I should really think about doing differently?

• Android 1.5 - 2.1 Search Activity affects Parent Lifecycle

  Behavior seems consistent in Android 1.5 to 2.1 Short version is this, it appears that when my (android search facility) search activity is fired from the android QSR due to either a suggestion or search, UNLESS my search activity in turn fires off a VISIBLE activity that is not the parent of the search, the search parents life cycle changes. It will NOT fire onDestroy until I launch a visible activity from it. If I do, onDestroy will fire fine. I need a way to get around this behavior... The long version: We have implemented a SearchSuggestion provider and a Search activity in our application. The one thing about it that is very odd is that if the SearchManager passes control to our custom Search activity, AND that activity does not create a visible Activity the Activity which parented the search does not destroy (onDestroy doesn't run) and it will not until we call a visible Activity from the parent activity. As long as our Search Activity fires off another Activity that gets focus the parent activity will fire onDestroy when I back out of it. The trick is that Activity must have a visual component. I tried to fake it out with a 'pass through' Activity so that my Search Activity could fire off another Intent and bail out but that didn't work either. I have tried setting our SearchActivity to launch singleTop and I also tried setting its noHistory attribute to true, tried setResult(RESULT_OK) in SearchACtivity prior to finish, bunch of other things, nothing is working. This is the chunk of code in our Search Activity onCreate. Couple of notes about it: If Intent is Action_Search (user typed in their own search and didn't pick a suggestion), we display a list of results as our Search Activity is a ListActivity. In this case when the item is picked, the Search Activity closes and our parent Activity does fire onDestroy() when we back out. If Intent is Action_View (user picked a suggestion) when type is "action" we fire off an Intent that creates a new visible Activity. In this case same thing, when we leave that new activity and return to the parent activity, the back key does cause the parent activity to fire onDestroy when leaving. If Intent is Action_View (user picked a suggestion) when type is "pitem" is where the problem lies. It works fine (the method call focuses an item on the parent activity), but when the back button is hit on the parent activity onDestroy is NOT called. IF after this executes I pick an option in the parent activity that fires off another activity and return to the parent then back out it will fire onDestroy() in the parent activity. Note that the "action" intent ends up running the exact same method call as "pitem", it just bring up a new visual Activity first.
