• Front End Developer v/s PHP-MySQL Engineer

  Hello, I want to decide which of this would be a more viable career option? I am ready to quit my current job and hence I am looking for new opportunity. Current job is maintainence and no more active development. My current role is of a PHP/MySQL Developer. I very well understand web-programming and am comfortable with RoR/Sinatra/Zend MVC/JQuery/JSON manipulation, etc. I understand MySQL InnoDB/MyISAM engine and how one differs from the other, etc. Basically, I could very well manage the deployment of a web-application end-to-end including configuration of Apache/Nginx servers, memcache,etc On the other hand, I am being offered a Sr.Front End Web developer that would require me to extensively write HTML/CSS crossbrowser/crossplatform compliant code. I very well understand XHTML/CSS/Box model etc. I would be working on Drupal for the management of websites. While I understand continuing to work on server-side technologies would always be a good career path, how would the role of Core front-end developer turn out to be? If I take this opportunity, will I eventually get a chance to focus onto UCD, HCI, Information Architect,etc. So are these kinda roles possible if I focus on front end development? No offenses to the Front end developers, just want to understand if this is something I want to gain a mastery over. I have 2 yrs of industry experience after graduating with a MS-Computer Science. Although, I have a CS degree, if I were to take uip serious front-end role; I could probably go back and take up some design/HCI/UI courses. Please advise.

• How do I debug a crash when I run my garbage-collected app in Rosetta?

  I have a Universal app which is targeting 10.5 and which uses garbage collection. I am building for ppc, i386 and x86_64. I don't have access to a physical PowerPC machine so I am trying to use Rosetta to confirm that the PowerPC portion of the app works correctly.   Hi, I am trying my hardest to find the simplest way to create a basic "model first" entity framework example. However I am struggling with the actually generation of the database, particularly the running of the SQL against the database. Tools Visual Studio 2010 SQL Server 2008 Express Process Create a new class project Add a new Server-Database item (mdf) named "Database1.mdf" to the project Add an empty ADO.net Entity Model Create a simple entity (Person: Id, Name) Generate the Script selecting the Database1 connection created for me by visual studio Right click the script editor and select the "Execute SQL..." option Log in to SQLEXPRESS This is where is falls over saying it cant find a database name "Database1". The "problem" is that the SQL server has not had Database1 attached to it. I am 100% positive that Visual Studio use to attach a database to SQLExpress when it created a new database (Step 2). This appears to not be the case any more (even the beta of VS2010 did it). Can someone confirm this? or tell me how to get this to happen? Is there a way that I can modify the TSQL script to use an un-attached database. ie a file. I know I can use SQL Management Studio or sqlcmd to attach the database, but I would ideally like to avoid the solutions as I would like to see the cleanest method of just using visual studio. Ideal Solutions (in order of most prefered) Get visual studio to attach the newly created database Modify the generated SQL to point to file Thanks in advance.

  Hi all, I am using TFS 2008 and Visual Studio and my boss has instructed me to implement Build Automation for Development and Release builds for a web Project. I am a total newbie in Build Automation. There are multiple developers working on the project on different machines using Visual Studio 2008 team System. Source is already being maintained on TFS 2008. SQL Server in Use is SQL Server 2000 and hosted IIS is IIS 7.5 on Windows Server 2008 x64. I have searched over the net and found Continuous Integration and Nightly Builds as two important Build Automation techniques. I was just wondering of any disadvantages associated with both the methodologies (CI and Nightly Builds). If someone could guide me to a working tutorial that explains both techniques the it would be quite helpful. Please also tell the requirements of IIS, SQL Server and any other that might be pre-requisite to implement build automation. Also i would like to know whether there are other techniques that are better then CI? Replies and discussion much appreciated. Thanks

What and it's a news app that loads JSON feeds, when app goes off to load the feed I want to display the UIActivityIndicatorView but I've found my JSON Access code is not being called asynchronous which is locking the user interface. • AdMob ad in iPhone app makes App content disappear when "done" is pressed!

  Hello All, When I return from an adMob ad by hitting "done" the content of my app has disappeared ! All that remains is a background image I had attached directly to the main window. Oddly I can still hear the result of my touch events from my main screen (which is now gone). This may be related to the issue some people have had regarding a 20 pixel move involving the toolbar...I see something to that effect as the ad starts to overlay. I have admob in another app that is working fine, and I notice when the ad opens in that app the ad content fills the whole screen EXCEPT the top toolbar (it starts right under it). In the new app I'm working on right now this isn't the case. When the ad starts to open I see the tool bar vanish, then the add comes in and fills the entire screen (including the area where the tool bar was); then when I click done and the the ad goes away everything under it is gone as well. It may be worth noting that the App I had working was 2.x and the current app is 3.x (and thus using the admob 3.0 libraries). This is very odd and deal-breaking; I need help ASAP The relevant part of my view hierarchy is as follows: AppDelegate - ViewController - MainView (Ad is in here) There are also some other Views that are children of the ViewController and a UITabbar is also a subview of the ViewController (programmatically declared, not a UITabBar Controller). Any help you can offer would be extremely appreciate...I need to resolve this issue ASAP, release in two days! Thanks!!

  I am frustrated with string-to-number and number-to-string conversion in GIMP scripting. I am runnning GIMP 2.6.8 in Windows Vista. I understand that GIMP's internal Scheme implementation changes over the versions and I can't seem to nail down the documentation. From what I can gather GIMP's Scheme is a subset of TinyScheme and/or supports the R5RS standard procedures. In any case, I usually just look in the packaged script directory for examples when I want to try something new, because that should work for sure, right? For example, grid-system.scm comes with the latest GIMP release and has the expression, (string-append (number->string obj) " ") which is exactly what I want. However, if I use number-string in my own script, or even type it into GIMP's script console (which is how I usually test out new stuff I want to do) it tells me number-string is an unbound variable: > (number->string 3) Error: eval: unbound variable: number->string Other standard procedures from, say R5RS, work just fine: > (string-append "frust" "rated") "frustrated" So, 1) Is there some lurking documentation for current GIMP Scheme scripting other than something drastic like searching GIMP's source code? 2) Can I use the GIMP console to spit out a list of all defined procedures to find something I need? 3) Anyone else confirm that number-string is not defined for the current Windows build, even though it appears in the packaged scripts? My web searches haven't turned up any related problems, and a complete uninstall of all GIMP versions, back to latest puts me in the same scrape.

• MVC ASP.NET, ObjectContext and Ajax. Weird Behaviour

  Hi, i've been creating a web application in mvc asp.net. I have three different project/solutions. One solution contains the model in EF (DAL) and all the methods to add, update, delete and query the objects in the model, the objectcontext is managed here in a per request basis. Other solution contains a content management system in wich authorized users insert, delete, update and access objects through the DAL mentioned before. And the last solution contains the web page that is accessed by all users and where the only operations executed are selects, no update, inserts or deletes here. All the selects are executed against the DAL mentioned before (the first solution). The problem here is that i'm not sure whether an HttpContext lifespan ObjectContext is the best solution. I have a lot of ajax calls in my web app and i'm not sure if an httpcontext could interfere with the performance of the application. I've been noticed that in some cases, specially when someone is working in the content manager inserting, updating or deleting, when you try to click on any link of the user web application (the web app that is accessed by any user - the third one that i mentioned before) the web page freezes and it remains stucked transferring data. In order to stop that behaviour you have to stop and refresh or click several times on the link. Excuse me for my bad english. I hope you could understand and could help me to solve this issue. • SVN Question regarding branching and third party vendor branching

  Hi, We are developing an application which consists of: a source code base given to us by a partner infrequently. This is a somewhat working code, "final" version of something. They have their own release cycle and version tracking. on the code base above we make our changes. These can be either bugfixes or development of new features. Till now, we managed to create some code mayhem, as a result we would like to put all this in a SVN repository. I would like to ask you what you think is the best practice for this to happen with the less pain. The followings are our things that we consider important: We would like to track our bugfixes/changes since we cannot send back bugfixes to our software vendor, but we can report a bug (and they might or might not fix it). All we develop on their code remains "in-house" they are not interested in our changes. As long as we don't get a new codebase from the vendor, we consider their latest version to be the stable one we are working on. This might be branched down further, but the result is always a stable trunk, the build is done based on this "stable" trunk. When the vendor releases a new version we would like to merge our "stable" trunk (which contains a lot of changes) with their changes, thus creating a new "stable" trunk. For each version we deploy (to clients) we should be able later to fix bugs only on that version, for clients who have installed our system using that specific version There are more developers working on the codebase... • StarTeam trunk.

  I have the unfortunate opportunity of source control via Borland's StarTeam. It unfortunately does very few things well, and one supreme weakness is its view management. I love SVN and come from an SVN mindset. Our issue is post production release we are spending countless hours merging changes into a "production support" environment. Please do not harass me this was not my doing, I inherited it and am trying to present a better way of managing the repository. It is not an option to switch to a different SCM tool. Current setup Product.1.0 (TRUNK, current production code, and at this level are pending bug fixes) Product.2.0(true trunk anything checked in gets tested, and then released next production cycle, a lot of changes occur in this view) My proposal is going to be to swap them, have all development be done on the trunk (Production), tag on releases, and as needed create child views to represent production support bug fixes. Production Production.2.0.SP.1 I can not find any documentation to support the above proposal so I am trying to get feedback on whether or not the change is a good idea and if there is anything you would recommend doing differently.

• Serializing Complex ViewModel with Json.Net Destabilization Error on Latest Version

  I just added the latest Version of JSON.Net and I get the System.Security.VerificationException: Operation could destabilize the runtime error when trying to use a controller (while running the application). I read in other posts that this issue should have been fixed in release 6 but I still have the problem. I even added *Newtonsoft.* to the ignore modules in the intellitrace options, which seems to have suppressed the error, but the post will just run forever and not return anything. Any help I can get would be greatly appreciated.   lanchpad.net states that for project Emle - Electronic Mathematics Laboratory Equipment 2.0 series is the current focus of development This is what I have done so far: Set the launchpad.net project to import from the sourceforge.net project Emle (this actually set the launchpad.net project to mirror the sourceforge.net project rather than just inport the content once) Examined the launchpad.net project to see that the three commits (#1 - #3) which were done in the sourceorge.net project previousley made it into launchpad.net. Used bzrto get the launchpad.net project which I did while is was still set for mirroring. Made three changes and commits using bzr (#4 - #6). Was unable to see the changes on the launchpad.net site. Requested the mirroring to be stopped (it did).   I'm trying to use JACOB to interact with a COM object. I was able to invoke an initialization method on the object (and to get its properties), but am not getting any events back. The code is quoted below. I have a sample HTML+Javascript page (running in IE) that successfully receives events from the same object. I'm considering the following options, but would appreciate any concrete troubleshooting ideas ... Send my Java program to the team who developed the COM object, and have them look for anything suspicious on their side (does the object have a way on knowing whether there's a client listening to its events, and whether they were successfully delivered?) Get into the native parts of JACOB and try to debug on that side.   Hi, I've some trouble with Tim's FloatableWindow. (<--SourceCode & DLLs) It throws the following Exception once closed the control. • BackgroundColor of UITableViewCellStyleSubtitle labels ??!?

  I am trying to create a table with an image as a background. To achieve this, I started out with the background: self.view.backgroundColor = [UIColor groupTableViewBackgroundColor]; This resulted in a background image which appears in tablecells as well. That is not something I want, so I tried to set the cell's backgroundColor: cell.backgroundColor = [UIColor whiteColor]; This had no effect at all !!!. Hmmm strange. So I tried this: UIView *backgroundView = [[UIView alloc] init]; backgroundView.backgroundColor = [UIColor whiteColor]; cell.backgroundView = backgroundView; [backgroundView release]; This works almost. The only problem left is that the textLabel & the detailTextLabel still show the background behind them. Setting the backgroundColor on those labels to white doesn't do anything either. How do I proceed? Where do I go wrong? I am trying to achieve a tableView like the worldClock app has.

• edited an .SWF, locally the changes made are okay, but when on server changes are not fully visible

  Hi, I just edited an .SWF file I have on my website home page for a while now. I update the SWF frequently with new pictures. It's actually a picture slideshow, consisting out of 6 images. I used Adobe Flash CS4 Pro to edit the file, with just swapping all the pictures (JPGS) in it for other ones. I also have some small AS where I just have the URL: on(release) { getURL("link"); } so that's nothing fancy at all. I saved and published everything (CTRL+ENTER) and the .SWF played well, and tested it in IE8 and FF. Then I uploaded the SWF to my test server, overwriting the existing SWF file. Now the problem: all pictures but one show up well. Of the 6 images, the second image is actually the old image that was in its place. I downloaded the .SWF from the testserver and inspected the SWF and guess what: the old picture wasn't in it, instead the correct image was in the SWF. Even after reloading the page hitting CTRL+F5 still the wrong image shows. FF though shows the SWF correctly. So I then opened the page on another computer using IE8 and there the SWF works well, showing the correct second image. What's wrong with my first computer's browser? It's also the computer I edited the SWF with. I DO remember like I first saved and uploaded the wrong SWF (with the old 2nd image still in it) to the testserver, and later on uploading the correct one (proper 2nd image) I think IE8 has cached the wrong SWF, and now memorized it someway not willing to see that the file has actually been changed, but what to do so IE8 starts showing the correct SWF??

• How do I escape a LIKE clause using NHibernate Criteria?

  The code we're using is straight-forward in this part of the search query: myCriteria.Add( Expression.InsensitiveLike("Code", itemCode, MatchMode.Anywhere)); and this works fine in a production environment. The issue is that one of our clients has item codes that contain % symbols which this query needs to match. The resulting SQL output from this code is similar to: SELECT ... FROM ItemCodes WHERE ... AND Code LIKE '%ItemWith%Symbol%' which clearly explains why they're getting some odd results in item searches. Is there a way to enable escaping using the programmatic Criteria methods? Addendum: We're using a slightly old version of NHibernate, 2.1.0.4000 (current as of writing is 2.1.2.4853), but I checked the release notes, and there was no mention of a fix for this. I didn't find any open issue in their bugtracker either. We're using SQL Server, so I can escape the special characters (%, _, [, and ^) in code really easily, but the point of us using NHibernate was to make our application database-engine-independent as much as possible. Neither Restrictions.InsensitiveLike() nor HqlQueryUtil.GetLikeExpr() escape their inputs, and removing the MatchMode parameter makes no difference as far as escaping goes.

• XNA Reach profile with VMWare - Vertex Buffers not working?

  Running XNA app, using Reach profile, in VMWare Fusion host OS Mac OSX, VM is Windows XP SP 3 (my dual-boot OS). Running on MacBook Pro w/NVidia 320M graphics card When I am booted in to XP natively, my code works. The code is drawing cubes that are set up using vertex buffers When another friend runs this same code on Windows 7, it also works for him just fine When I am running my code in the VM, it doesn't work. I have billboarding sprites running in a shader program and this part displays fine. I get no crashing or errors, the geometry just doesn't appear. I tried Debug and Release. This is very basic operation so I'm thinking VMWare isn't the problem, but it's my code....
