• How to handle failure to release a resource which is contained in a smart pointer?

  How should an error during resource deallocation be handled, when the object representing the resource is contained in a shared pointer? Smart pointers are a useful tool to manage resources safely. Examples of such resources are memory, disk files, database connections, or network connections. // open a connection to the local HTTP port boost::shared_ptr<Socket> socket = Socket::connect("localhost:80"); In a typical scenario, the class encapsulating the resource should be noncopyable and polymorphic. A good way to support this is to provide a factory method returning a shared pointer, and declare all constructors non-public. The shared pointers can now be copied from and assigned to freely. The destructor must not throw, so a failure to release the resource will remain undetected. A common way out of this problem is to add a public method to release the resource. class Socket { public: virtual void close(); // may throw // ... }; Unfortunately, this approach introduces another problem: Our objects may now contain resources which have already been released. This complicates the implementation of the resource class. Even worse, it makes it possible for clients of the class to use it incorrectly. The following example may seem far-fetched, but it is a common pitfall in multi-threaded code. socket->close(); // ... size_t nread = socket->read(&buffer[0], buffer.size()); // wrong use! Either we ensure that the resource is not released before the object is destroyed, thereby losing any way to deal with a failed resource deallocation. Or we provide a way to release the resource explicitly during the object's lifetime, thereby making it possible to use the resource class incorrectly. There is a way out of this dilemma. But the solution involves using a modified shared pointer class. These modifications are likely to be controversial. Typical shared pointer implementations, such as boost::shared_ptr, require that no exception be thrown when their object's destructor is called. Generally, no destructor should ever throw, so this is a reasonable requirement. These implementations also allow a custom deleter function to be specified, which is called in lieu of the destructor when no reference to the object remains. The no-throw requirement is extended to this custom deleter function. The rationale for this requirement is clear: The shared pointer's destructor must not throw. If the deleter function does not throw, nor will the shared pointer's destructor. However, the same holds for other member functions of the shared pointer which lead to resource deallocation, e.g. reset(): If resource deallocation fails, no exception can be thrown. The solution proposed here is to allow custom deleter functions to throw. This means that the modified shared pointer's destructor must catch exceptions thrown by the deleter function. On the other hand, member functions other than the destructor, e.g. reset(), shall not catch exceptions of the deleter function (and their implementation becomes somewhat more complicated). • Search Form using PHP/mySQL and Fancybox iFrame

  I am struggling to get a search form in PHP to work with a fancybox iFrame. The search form queries a MySQL database and I want the results to show in the iFrame. So far, i manage to use Mechanize to load a web-driver browser and to connect to some page but Mechanize module do not support js directly so now i need something like Selenium if i understand correct. I am also a beginner in programming so please be specific. How can i use Selenium or if there is any other solution, please explain details. • How to? WCF customBinding over Https

  Hi all, I'm trying to setup a WCF service for internal use, on our external facing web-farm (we dont have a web farm internally, and I need this service to have failover and load-balancing). Requirements: PerSession state, as we need the service to retain variable data for each session. HTTPS. After lots of googling i've read I needed to create a customBinding, which I've done, but not sure if it is correct. Larger message size, as one of the parameters is a byte[] array, which can be a max of 5mb. no requirement to manually edit the client-side app.config. ie, I need the Developer to just add the service reference, and then starts using the object without fiddly changing of app.config. Note: I've previously had this service working under HTTP correctly (using wsHttpBinding). I've also had it working under HTTPS, but it didn't support PerSession state, and lost internal variable values each function call. I'm currently getting this error from the test harness: Could not find default endpoint element that references contract 'AppMonitor.IAppMonitorWcfService' in the ServiceModel client configuration section. This might be because no configuration file was found for your application, or because no endpoint element matching this contract could be found in the client element. NOTE: The error is arising on an Test Harness EXE, that has the WCF service referenced directly under Service References. This is not the problem of an exe referencing another object, that then references the WCF service, that i've read about. The WSDL is showing correctly when browsing to the URL.   I have Hibernate 3.6.0.Final and Spring 3.0.0.RELEASE I get "No Hibernate Session bound to thread, and configuration does not allow creation of non-transactional one here" If I add the thread specification back in, I get "saveOrUpdate is not valid without active transaction" Any ideas? • Parsing csv line to Java objects

  I was wondering if someone here could help me, I can't find a solution for my problem and I have tried everything. What I am trying to do is read and parse lines in a csv file into java objects and I have succeeded in doing that but after it reads all the lines it should insert the lines into the database but it only inserts the 1st line the entire time and I don't no why. When I do a print it shows that it is reading all the lines and placing them in the objects but as soon as I do the insert it wants to insert only the 1st line. • How should I implement simple caches with concurrency on Redis?

  Background I have a 2-tier web service - just my app server and an RDBMS. I want to move to a pool of identical app servers behind a load balancer. I currently cache a bunch of objects in-process. I hope to move them to a shared Redis. I have a dozen or so caches of simple, small-sized business objects. For example, I have a set of Foos. Each Foo has a unique FooId and an OwnerId. One "owner" may own multiple Foos. In a traditional RDBMS this is just a table with an index on the PK FooId and one on OwnerId. I'm caching this in one process simply: Dictionary<int,Foo> _cacheFooById; Dictionary<int,HashSet<int>> _indexFooIdsByOwnerId; Reads come straight from here, and writes go here and to the RDBMS. I usually have this invariant: "For a given group [say by OwnerId], the whole group is in cache or none of it is." So when I cache miss on a Foo, I pull that Foo and all the owner's other Foos from the RDBMS. Updates make sure to keep the index up to date and respect the invariant. When an owner calls GetMyFoos I never have to worry that some are cached and some aren't. What I did already The first/simplest answer seems to be to use plain ol' SET and GET with a composite key and json value: SET( "ServiceCache:Foo:" + theFoo.Id, JsonSerialize(theFoo)); I later decided I liked: HSET( "ServiceCache:Foo", theFoo.FooId, JsonSerialize(theFoo)); That lets me get all the values in one cache as HVALS. It also felt right - I'm literally moving hashtables to Redis, so perhaps my top-level items should be hashes. This works to first order. If my high-level code is like: UpdateCache(myFoo); AddToIndex(myFoo); That translates into: HSET ("ServiceCache:Foo", theFoo.FooId, JsonSerialize(theFoo)); var myFoos = JsonDeserialize( HGET ("ServiceCache:FooIndex", theFoo.OwnerId) ); myFoos.Add(theFoo.OwnerId); HSET ("ServiceCache:FooIndex", theFoo.OwnerId, JsonSerialize(myFoos)); However, this is broken in two ways. Two concurrent operations can read/modify/write at the same time. The latter "wins" the final HSET and the former's index update is lost. Another operation could read the index in between the first and second lines. It would miss a Foo that it should find. So how do I index properly? I think I could use a Redis set instead of a json-encoded value for the index. That would solve part of the problem since the "add-to-index-if-not-already-present" would be atomic. I also read about using MULTI as a "transaction" but it doesn't seem like it does what I want. Am I right that I can't really MULTI; HGET; {update}; HSET; EXEC since it doesn't even do the HGET before I issue the EXEC? I also read about using WATCH and MULTI for optimistic concurrency, then retrying on failure. But WATCH only works on top-level keys. So it's back to SET/GET instead of HSET/HGET. And now I need a new index-like-thing to support getting all the values in a given cache. If I understand it right, I can combine all these things to do the job. All in all this seems like a lot of complexity for what has to be a very common case; I can't help but think there's a better, smarter, Redis-ish way to do things that I'm just not seeing. How do I lock properly? Even if I had no indexes, there's still a (probably rare) race condition. A: HGET - cache miss B: HGET - cache miss A: SELECT B: SELECT A: HSET C: HGET - cache hit C: UPDATE C: HSET B: HSET ** this is stale data that's clobbering C's update. Note that C could just be a really-fast A. Again I think WATCH, MULTI, retry would work, but... ick. I know in some places people use special Redis keys as locks for other objects. Is that a reasonable approach here? Should those be top-level keys like ServiceCache:FooLocks:{Id} or ServiceCache:Locks:Foo:{Id}? Or make a separate hash for them - ServiceCache:Locks with subkeys Foo:{Id}, or ServiceCache:Locks:Foo with subkeys {Id} ? How would I work around abandoned locks, say if a transaction (or a whole server) crashes while "holding" the lock?

• Tomcat 6: Access Control Exception?

  I'm trying to setup a tomcat6 server, and I'm trying to match another setup someone else established. However, my deployment (default Ubuntu install) uses a policy.d/ directory structure, and the established server just uses a catalina.policy file. I've tried setting every entry in policy.d to match the given catalina.policy, but I still get the following stacktrace on boot (from localhost log). I have two questions, then. First, how do I get tomcat to use a single poilcy file, rather than the directory structure presented by policy.d/? Secondly, why, when I specify all files to use the same policy, do I still get the stack trace below? • SSRS Export to Excel not working through VPN (Juniper SA4000)

  We have a SharePoint (MOSS 2007 on Win2003 R2) with SSRS reports (from SQL 2005) embedded in it. When we connect to the SharePoint portal through our VPN (firewall is Juniper SA4000) and using Internet Explorer (6, 7, and 8) and try to export any SSRS report under Excel, we get an error message: Internet Explorer cannot download . Internet Explorer was not able to open the internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later. When not using the VPN (LAN from the office), everything (exporting under Excel) works fine. When using Firefox through the VPN, it works fine. When exporting to any other format (pdf or text or whatever), everything is fine under both IE and FF. Our firewall people suspect something in SSRS/MOSS/Office. Our MOSS consultants suspect something in the firewall Juniper SA4000. • Can't join OS X Mavericks to AD Domain

I've joined (bound) Ubuntu Linux clients to the same domain with net ads join in the past with no problems (using the same administrative user). I don't have access to any server logs. This is what I think is going on: The OS X client sends a kerberos request. The KDC says, "You need to pre-authenticate. Try again" The OS X client tries to pre-authenticate (all this so far is over UDP) Something gets lost on our network and the KDC says, "Oops something went wrong" The OS X client switches to TCP and tries again. Over TCP, the KDC says, "You're using an encryption type I don't support" Note that in its padata records, the OS X client is always using "aes256-cts-hmac-sha1-96" as its encryption type. However, in its KDC_REQ_BODY record it lists the aes256-cts-hmac-sha1-96, aes128-cts-hmac-sha1-96, des3-cbc-sha1, and rc4-hmac encryption types. When the KDC comes back with KDC_ERR_ETYPE_NOSUPP, it uses rc4-hmac as its encryption type in its padata record. I know next to nothing about Kerberos, but it seems to me that the OS X client should go ahead and try the rc4-hmac encryption type. However, it does nothing after this. I have googled and have found that mostly permissions are the problems of my error but can't figure it out. • How to tune down the Hyperic built-in postgresql database for a small setup

  We are testing out Hyperic 4.5.1 in a quite small environment for now. Currently there are just 1-5 agents and there probably won't be any more than 10-15. When I run ps ax there are 20(!) postgres processes running. For a small setup like this, that can't be necessary, can it? I'm a software developer and don't have much experience with setting up servers and such though, so don't really know. Either way, what settings are appropriate for a small Hyperic setup like this? • Why does Mac OS X Software Update not work when machine uses Active Directory?

  My company's IT department is mostly a Windows run operation and in order to become more secure, they are altering the way that the Macintosh computers login to our internal network so that they use Active Directory like their Windows counterparts. I have been given Administrative permission on my Mac and I am able to do most of what I used to be able to do in terms of authentication of software installations. However, there is a problem: the "Software Update" feature doesn't work. What happens is that when I try to get the Mac to perform its Software Updates from the Apple menu, the normal window appears listing what has to be updated; I am able to select what to update and click the "Update" button, but then nothing happens. It doesn't ask for authentication like it used to, the computer doesn't perform any download or installation (it does sometimes ask me to agree to license agreements for iTunes). I can download the updates individually and install them without any issues, but the auto-update fails. I'd rather use the Software Update menu item like I used to: it is much more convenient. Any suggestions on how I can fix this? EDIT Nov 19th, 2009, 10:09 EST: I have posted this question to the Apple Mac OS X Snow Leopard support forum. EDIT Nov 19th, 2009, 12:39 EST:Yes, the Terminal command "sudo softwareupdate --install --all" does work flawlessly. I want to avoid that as my co-workers are generally not comfortable on the Mac. I also tried Chealion's suggestion to delete "~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist" and "/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist", Software Update still fails. However, I did get diagnostic messages in the Console (below). I've deleted the MS Office Package Receipts and examined the suhelperd (Software Update Helper Daemon?); it appears that suhelperd is crashing and that explains why it doesn't work. I've submitted a bug report to Apple (radar://7408619).   So I'm trying to setup PostFix while using SASL (Cyrus variety preferred, I was using dovecot earlier but I'm switching from dovecot to courier so I want to use cyrus instead of dovecot) but I seem to be having issues. • JSF Portlets in Liferay on JBoss

  I'm currently looking at working with and deploying JSF portlets into Liferay 6.0.5, sitting on JBoss 5.1.0. I ran into a lot of trouble trying to port some JSF-y/Seam-y/EJB-y stuff I had lying around, so I thought I'd start simple and work my way up. I could generate generic portlets using the NetBeans Maven archetype for Liferay portlets absolutely fine, but it's rather irrelevant because I wanted JSF portlets I took an example JSF portlet from http://www.liferay.com/downloads/liferay-portal/community-plugins/-/software_catalog/products/5546866 and attempted to deploy into a clean, vanilla installation of Liferay 6.0.5/JBoss 5.1.0 to no avail. The log messages are reproduced at the end of this. This particular example was actually tested for GlassFish and Tomcat, so it's not particularly helpful considering I'm deplying into JBoss.
