• Book review: Peopleware: Productive Projects and Teams

     Peopleware by Tom DeMarco and Timothy Lister is golden classic book that can be considered as mandatory reading for software project managers, team leads, higher level management and board members of software companies. If you make decisions about people then you cannot miss this book. If you are already good on managing developers then this book can make you even better – you will learn new stuff about successful development teams for sure. Why peopleware? Peopleware gives you very good hints about how to build up working environment for project teams where people can really do their work. Book also covers team building topics that are also important reading. As software developer I found practically all points in this book to be accurate and valid. Many times I have found my self thinking about same things and Peopleware made me more confident about my opinions. Peopleware covers also time management and planning topics that help you do way better job on using developers time effectively by minimizing the amount of interruptions by phone calls, pointless meetings and i-want-to-know-what-are-you-doing-right-now questions by managers who doesn’t write code anyway. I think if you follow suggestions given by Peopleware your developers are very happy. I suggest you to also read another great book – Death March by Edward Yourdon. Death March describes you effectively what happens when good advices given by Peopleware are totally ignored or worse yet – people are treated exactly opposite way. I consider also Death March as golden classics and I strongly recommend you to read this book too. • External hard drive not recognized

  Installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a hard drive by itself (no windows). All updates are up to date. Everything`works fine except when I plug in a 320 gig Toshiba external hard drive....it is not recognized. When I plug in an 8 gig flash drive it is recognized no problem. What do I mean by "not recognized"? I mean: how do you know it was not recognized. You can check the command "cat /proc/partitions" in a terminal with and without the hdd attached. If you see some difference, it's ok. If the difference is something like "sda1" (sd+letter+number) then you have partition on it, maybe it can't be handled in Ubuntu (no filesystem on it or so). If there is only "sda" in the difference for example (sd+letter, but no number after it) then the drive itself is detected, just no partition is created on it. Also you can check out the messages of the kernel, with the "dmesg" command in the terminal. If there is no disk/partition/anything in /proc/partitions, there can be an USB level problem, you can issue command "lsusb" as it was suggested before my answer. It's really matter of what do you mean about "not recognized". @Marco Ceppi @Oli @Pitto By "not recognized" I meant that when I plug in a 8 gig flash drive an icon immediately appears on the desktop imdicating that there is a flash drive plugged in and I can click on it and view the files on the flash drive. It also shows up on the "Nautilus" default file manager. When I plug in the 320 gig Toshiba external hard drive, I get no indication on the desktop or the file manager (thus "not recogized"). When I run the command cat/proc/partitions/ I get an error message Could not open location 'file:///home/bob/cat/proc/partitions' with or without the external hard drive installed. With the dmeg command I get about 10 pages of info with no mention of disk/partition/anything in /proc/partitions. • Is there a pedagogical game engine?

  I'm looking for a book, website, or other resource that gives modern 3D game engines the same treatment as Operating Systems: Design and Implementation gave operating systems. I have read Jason Gregory's Game Engine Architecture, which I enjoyed. However, by intent the author treated components of the architecture as atomic units, whereas what I'm interested in is the plumbing between those units that makes a coherent whole out of ideally loosely coupled parts. In books such as these, one usually reads that "that's academic," but that's the point! I have also read Julian Gold's Object-oriented Game Development, which likewise was good, but I feel is beginning to show its age. Since even mobile platforms these days are multicore and have fast video memory, those kinds of things (concurrency, display item buffering) would ideally be covered. There are other resources, such as the Doom 3 source code, which is highly instructive for its being a shipped product. Game Programming book ever devoting the first two chapters to "Now just what is a variable anyway?" In C or C++, very preferably C++. Languages that are more concise are fantastic for teaching, except for when what you want to learn is how to cope with a verbose language. There is also the benefit of the guardrails that C++ doesn't provide, such as garbage collection. Platform agnostic. I'm sincerely afraid that this book is out there and it's Visual C++/DirectX oriented. I'm a Linux guy, and I'd do what it takes, but I would very much like to be able to use OpenGL. Thanks for everything! Before anyone gets on my case about it, Fast inverse square root was from Quake III Arena, not Doom 3!

• How to get better at solving Dynamic programming problems

  I recently came across this question: "You are given a boolean expression consisting of a string of the symbols 'true', 'false', 'and', 'or', and 'xor'. Count the number of ways to parenthesize the expression such that it will evaluate to true. For example, there is only 1 way to parenthesize 'true and false xor true' such that it evaluates to true." I knew it is a dynamic programming problem so i tried to come up with a solution on my own which is as follows. Suppose we have a expression as A.B.C.....D where '.' represents any of the operations and, or, xor and the capital letters represent true or false. Lets say the number of ways for this expression of size K to produce a true is N. when a new boolean value E is added to this expression there are 2 ways to parenthesize this new expression 1. ((A.B.C.....D).E) ie. with all possible parenthesizations of A.B.C.....D we add E at the end. 2. (A.B.C.(D.E)) ie. evaluate D.E first and then find the number of ways this expression of size K can produce true. suppose T[K] is the number of ways the expression with size K produces true then T[k]=val1+val2+val3 where val1,val2,val3 are calculated as follows. 1)when E is grouped with D. i)It does not change the value of D ii)it inverses the value of D in the first case val1=T[K]=N.( As this reduces to the initial A.B.C....D expression ). In the second case re-evaluate dp[K] with value of D reversed and that is val1. 2)when E is grouped with the whole expression. //val2 contains the number of 'true' E will produce with expressions which gave 'true' among all parenthesized instances of A.B.C.......D i) if true.E = true then val2 = N ii) if true.E = false then val2 = 0 //val3 contains the number of 'true' E will produce with expressions which gave 'false' among all parenthesized instances of A.B.C.......D iii) if false.E=true then val3=( 2^(K-2) - N ) = M ie. number of ways the expression with size K produces a false [ 2^(K-2) is the number of ways to parenthesize an expression of size K ]. iv) if false.E=false then val3 = 0 This is the basic idea i had in mind but when i checked for its solution http://people.csail.mit.edu/bdean/6.046/dp/dp_9.swf the approach there was completely different.   I have two machines - Windows XP and a laptop using Windows 7. I connected them with a WLAN cable. On the Windows XP machine, I set the IP address to 192.168.0.10. On the Windows 7 laptop, I set the IP address to 192.168.0.20. The laptop can see the Windows XP machine, but Windows XP machine cannot see the Windows 7 machine. But this does NOT concern me. I want to move the files from my desktop (Windows XP) to Windows 7 (laptop). That's why I'm going through all this. The problem is that when I try to connect from Windows 7 to Windows XP machine, I get this window: I don't understand what username/password is needed. I use none on the Windows XP machine. I tried all usernames - no success. Please explain in deep details how to solve my problem so I can connect to my Windows XP machine. EDIT: Maybe this can help: the Windows XP machine is named 'I' and '???????? III' is the name of the laptop. Both computers share one workgroup - WORKGROUP.

• How to get the value of a SELECT HtmlElement in C# webBrowser control

  Hi, In a C# WebBrowser control, I have generated a SELECT HtmlElement with a number of OPTION elements using w.RenderBeginTag(HtmlTextWriterTag.Select). I need to get the value of the select when the user changes it, and so added an event handler in the WebBrowser DocumentCompleted event. private void webBrowser1_DocumentCompleted(object sender, WebBrowserDocumentCompletedEventArgs e) { .... webBrowser1.Document.GetElementById("id_select_0").AttachEventHandler("onchange", new EventHandler(ddSelectedIndexChanged)); .... } protected void ddSelectedIndexChanged(object sender, EventArgs e) { .... } The event handler does get called, but the sender parameter is null and e is empty. • Windows 7 install detects SSD but doesn't list it to install to

  I'm having quite a weird problem when trying to install Windows 7 SP1 on a new Corsair Force Series 3 SSD to replace a failing HDD in my wife's laptop. When I boot to Windows install, it shows that I have no disks to install to, and tells me to find it a driver to any custom disks I may have. When I go to repair option on the first install window, and then open command prompt Window, I can see the disk using diskpart, and can partition it and format partitions, and then later access them from command prompt and copy files to them. After creating partitions, clicking the "browse" button in Windows install screen that shows no disks available to install Windows to, does show the partitions created by diskpart! So, it does detect the disk and partitions, but refuses to list them as options to install to. People on the Interwebs seem to suggest that just running diskpart "clean" solved the issue for most people, just creating an "active" "primary" partition is al most tutorials suggest. Both got me only as far as described above. The BIOS doesn't have RAID option, changing between "ATA" and "AHCI" (the only available options) didn't make any difference. Might be worth mentioning that this is on a laptop that has Sata III controller for main drive (which I connected the Sata3 SSD to), and Sata II for DVD (which I used for Windows install media). That's what googling brings at least (DELL XPS 15 L502). Any ideas? . Update: The SSD is 460 GB. I tried setting it all as one partition and creating 70-90 GB partition as well (NTFS). More importantly, Windows doesn't list the partition as one it cannot install to (which it does with disks in general when they are small for example). What happens here is different. It doesn't list anything at all. It shows empty list of drives.

Yahoo no longer complains with the message "Warning: This website has not confirmed its identity with Yahoo! and might be fraudulent." as outlined in Andrew Arnott's excellent blog post: http://blog.nerdbank.net/2008/06/why-yahoo-says-your-openid-site.html However, when I try to authenticate using AOL I see the "Warning! site verification could not be completed." message.

• Is there a reason to use internal DNS over 8.8.8.8 ?

  I've inherited a LAN where there is really no name resolution being done for local resources... i.e. all users enter IP addresses manually to access printers and network shares. There are no LDAP servers or domains either....workstations simply connect to the network without authentication. DHCP is handled via a core switch... And DNS settings are also handed out by this same core switch. Currently, the DNS assignments are as such, and in this order: 10.1.1.50 / old Pentium III Windows 2003 box running DNS service- 128 MB RAM 169.200.x.x / ISP 4.2.2.2. / the well known public one There a couple thousand clients on the LAN....and most of the activity is web browsing ( this is an educational setting ). First of all, the server seems woefully underpowered for this task...yet there is virtually no slowness when web surfing by clients.... How much horsepower should a heavily used DNS server have ? I have also heard using 4.2.2.2 is a bad idea .... since it has been so overused... Finally, wouldn't it make sense to have a robust external DNS server listed first? ( Google's 8.8.8.8 would seem to be a logical candidate )

• New SSD freezing on older motherboard (intel G31)

  I have an ECS G31T-M motherboard running a Core2 Quad processor, 4gb RAM, Windows 7 32bit, Geforce 9600GT. Bought a Sandisk Extreme III 120GB (SDSSDX-120G-G25) and installed today. I'm outputting this from my 9600GT with included TV-out adapter to Component video (to my HDTV). This motherboard is SATA 2 and from what I can tell, SSDs run on the IDE controller and there is nothing fancy to set up advanced features of SSDs. I've noticed on other forums (but not verifying with ECS) this board does not support AHCI. I have two versions of Windows 7 installed on two drives, the SSD and an old 500G disc drive. When booted from my older 500G HDD, video plays fine on the HDTV. When booting the SSD windows 7 install, I am freezing constantly, as in, video plays OK for a minute, then picture freezes for 1-3 minutes (sometimes as audio continues playing) and returns for 20-30 seconds before doing the same thing again. Other tasks such as basic maneuvering through file folders seems to be no problem. Please help!! Do I need a new system for this thing to work, or could there be other fixes? I updated firmware to R201 to no avail. DJM

  I've having problems with resource filtering using m2eclipse Maven support in Eclipse. It seems that filtering only takes place on resources that have changed. This is fundamentally flawed because, if I have a file that references properties (e.g. ${my.property}, if the value of the property changes, the filtering will only be performed if the referencing file is also modified - if I only change the property value (in my pom.xml), the filtering is not applied to the files that that reference it. So, if I make a change to a property in my pom file, the filtering is not applied. However, if I then go to the file that references that property (e.g. a Spring config file) then edit and save it, the filtering is applied. I did read somewhere that: "m2eclipse skips filtering if there were no resource changes during incremental build" I'm using m2eclipse 0.10.x Has anyone else come across this? Thanks, Andrew

• NFS issue brings down entire vSphere ESX estate

  I experienced an odd issue this morning where an NFS issue appeared to have taken down the majority of my VMs hosted on a small vSphere 5.0 estate. The infrastructure itself is 4x IBM HS21 blades running around 20 VMs. The storage is provided by a single HP X1600 array with attached D2700 chassis running Solaris 11. There's a couple of storage pools on this which are exposed over NFS for the storage of the VM files, and some iSCSI LUNs for things like MSCS shared disks. Normally, this is pretty stable, but I appreciate the lack of resiliancy in having a single X1600 doing all the storage. It turned out that pretty much all of the VMs were inaccessible, and that the ESX hosts either were describing each VM as 'powered off', 'powered on', or 'unavailable'. The VMs described as 'powered on' where not in any way reachable or responding to pings, so this may be lies. There's absolutely no indication on the X1600 that anything was awry, and nothing on the switches to indicate any loss of connectivity. I only managed to resolve the issue by rebooting the ESX hosts in turn. I have a number of questions: What the hell happened? If this was a temporary NFS failure, why did it put the ESX hosts into a state from which a reboot was the only recovery? In the future, when the NFS server goes a little off-piste, what would be the best approach to add some resilience? I've been looking at budgeting for next year and potentially have budget to purchase another X1600/D2700/disks, would an identical mirrored disk setup help to mitigate these sorts of failures automatically? • Problems with word completion on Windows Mobile

  For "some reason" the word completion function on my windows mobile phone (HTC Diamond, rebadged as a T-Mobile MDA Compact IV (UK) running WM6.1 with HTC Touch Flo 3D) hasn't worked since one of my firends was taking a look at the phone (I remember him bitching about it being too obtrusive for him, as an iPhone fanboy). I've checked all the obvious settings ( Start Input Word Completion ) and everything looks set there; I tried a hard reset, to no avail and even tried upgrading the ROM t the latest from my network provider. I even tried walking into the store where I bought the phone, and the staff couldn't fix the issue. I still have my old handset, which also runs WM6.1 (a T-Mobile MDA Compact III (UK), albeit without Touch Flo 3D), and the word completion works on there, so I'm a little confused as to why I can't get it to work again on my new handset. Can anybody identify why this might not be working, or help me fix it? Edit: Even "Touch Input Settings" has both "Word Completion in T9 mode" and "Word Completion in ABC mode" checked. The full qwerty keyboard option is in T9 mode, and word completion works for this input method; It still does not work for my preferred, "Letter Recogniser" method.

ProBook 4321s- Radeon HD4350 ProBook 6440b- Radeon HD4550 Latitude E6410- NVS 3100M most of the time i'll running 3D CAD software, C++ programing...i saw my friend's laptop with radeon HD4350. it's perfectly fulfilling my demand. but i wonder how the other two are? Another thing i doubt is the screen resolution..my current laptop is 1280x800, and i found it comfortable to use. But these two HP only offer 1366x768..will it make any large different? Lastly, is there anyway to estimate how their power consumption is from the spec sheet? well, i would prefer one with longer battery usage time. my current laptop is suck...only last 1 hour even when it's still new..i'm not going to get another like this anymore.   Hi All, What I am trying to do is create tooltip functionality so that certain words in my instructional app can be tapped and the definition pops up. For the popup part I plan on using code from “AFInformationView” which provides bubbles on the iPhone. The part I'm struggling with is how to associate A particular word's location with the bubble. Currently I have the text on a UILabel that is on a custom UITableCell. Since I calculate the row height on the fly with: [textToUse sizeWithFont:[UIFont systemFontOfSize:FONT_SIZE] constrainedToSize:CGSizeMake(stop-start, 500)]; I'm not sure what the coordinates for a specific word will be. I was thinking that if I created a custom DataDetectorType that could be the fix. If anyone knows how to do this or has any other ideas I would be happy to hear them. Thanks, Andrew

I'm planning to USE it for processing videos and keeping big video site up! (using FFMpeg, MENcoder and etc.) I just need recommendations on whether listed hardware is good enough and will work together well and fast enough. Do I need anything else (missed something). I remember about CPU coolers though! ;) I'm planning to use SSD drives so please tell me if it's going to work just as regular HDDs (but much faster)? Are they going to be used as RAID (is this possible for SSDs)? Here is what I would like to get: Intel ® Server System SR1600URHSR (Urbanna) or Intel® Server System SR1695WBAC 2 x Intel Xeon X5650 4 x 16Gb DDR-III 1333MHz Kingston ECC Reg (KVR13R9D4/16) 3 x (or maybe 4x) 480Gb SSD Intel 520 Series (SSDSC2CW480A3K5) Which server system would be better? Is listed hardware new/good enough and worth buying it at the moment? Should I probably take a look at something slightly more expensive but more up to date and powerful, may be? • Bash commands not executed when through cron job - PHP

  Hi there! I have a cron job running a PHP script every five minutes; the PHP script executes two bash commands at the end of the script. I know the script is running due to a log file it appends to. When I run the PHP script manually via the Ubuntu Gnome Terminal both bash commands execute flawlessly; however when the PHP script is triggered via cron, the two bash commands are not ran.
