• Printing takes forever and gives pixelated prints

  I have a Brother HL-3070CW printer, which has some serious issues. Printing takes an abnormally long time, and if the file has anything more than text in it, it becomes horribly aliased and pixelated. The printer also sometimes complains about running out of memory. This problem has appeared on and off throughout various Ubuntu releases, and can sometimes be worked around by saving a file in Postscript through Evince, and printing the PS file in Evince. I tried to install drivers from the Brother website, but it gives an error "dependency not satisfiable: hl3070cwlpr" Help, I'm wasting a huge amount of paper and ink(not to mention time) reprinting pages over and over again in trial and error.

• TestDrive equivalent for Ubuntu Server

  Every now and then I'd like to play with a fresh minimal install of Ubuntu (to test sysadminish scripts, application install instructions, package dependency lists etc.). I'd like to have a tool as simple to use as testdrive: pick a version (say, 'maverick'), run a command, get a shell in a new virtual machine. I'd like that shell to be in the current terminal, rather than a new GUI window that testdrive uses. Setting up the new VM to accept SSH logins with my ssh public key is fine. I'd like the VM to have network access out of the box; NAT to a virtual network interface is fine. Why a VM? Chroots don't really cut it: installing, say, Apache in a chroot would fail because it would try to listen on port 80, which is already taken. Containers might work, though, if there are any that are supported by standard Ubuntu kernels.

  I am very new to game development and hence the question. Is there any open-source game editor that uses Bullet Physics engine with C++ code edit support.I have read about blender but it allows python based editing(if I am not wrong here). I need an editor to quickly draw the needed objects and concentrate more on the logic on their interactions(mostly magnetism based). This(my project) is part of an already existing legacy code in C++ which is forcing the dependency. Also, is there any physics engine which provides support for magnetism? • Why are the packages found with apt-get always horribly out of date?

  Whenever I use the package manager, it can only ever find really old versions of stuff. Example: sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install postgresql The best it can do is version 8.4 (3 years out of date). Trying to get a later version, I get: $ sudo apt-get install postgresql-9.1 Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Couldn't find package postgresql-9.1 I experience the same issue whenever I use the package manager, so I usually just download and build things from source. How can I make it find up-to-date software?

• How can I delay dropbox from starting, but not disable it?

  When I log into my user account on Ubuntu 10.10, there is a unsatisfying delay before my system becomes usable. Even launching a terminal, I have to wait a few seconds before the bash prompt appears. During this start-up period, the top process seems to be dropbox. I'm not sure what it's doing exactly (functionality is still fine as far as I can see), but I do know it really doesn't need to be doing it while I'm waiting for desktop to appear. (This is the standard Ubuntu with Gnome desktop, by the way.) What I would like to do is to be able to have a static or even dependency-based delay for dropbox to start. It would be nice if it waited for, e.g., 10 minutes, or for my browser tabs to load and a typing pause. Then it could churn away on file status or cache-chewing, and I would be happy. Is there a way to do this? Thanks!

• How to upgrade a particular package dependencies only?

  Let's say I have a package A which has Depends: B (>= 1.0.0) in its control file. The B was installed as an A dependency some time ago with 1.0.0 version. Now B was updated in the repository to the 1.0.42 version and I'd like to upgrade it. What I don't like to do: apt-get install B since it will mark B as "manually installed" (not sure how to name it correctly) package and it won't be removed with autoremove if I decide to stop using A ever. So is there an analogue of apt-get upgrade that only upgrades a particular package and its dependencies (probably recursive, it doesn't matter in my case since B doesn't depend on anything else) only?

  I'm re-working on the design of an existing application which is build using WebForms. Currently the plan is to work it into a MVP pattern application while using Ninject as the IoC container. The reason for Ninject to be there is that the boss had wanted a certain flexibility within the system so that we can build in different flavor of business logic in the model and let the programmer to choose which to use based on the client request, either via XML configuration or database setting. I know that Ninject have no need for XML configuration, however I'm confused on how it can help to dynamically inject the dependency into the system? Imagine I have a interface IMember and I need to bind this interface to the class decided by a xml or database configuration at the launch of the application, how can I achieve that?

• Advice for transitioning into a Java developer position from doing other types of web development?

  I've been doing web programming and currently work at a company working with mainly PHP and Javascript. For a little while now I've been becoming more and more frustrated with the shortcomings of this type of development and want to move to a company with a more defined development process that values doing things the "right way" such as using Unit tests, dependency injection / IoC, etc. I've been learning JEE / Java as much as I can on my own time but would really like to make a switch to doing this as my career and leave behind the PHP world altogether. I'm just wondering if anyone can give me advice on which things to put my main focus on right now to make myself marketable as an entry level Java developer. Basically, I feel that I'm not really learning anything new at my current job that will benefit me and its only making me more and more frustrated so I figure if there is any way to position myself for a transition I would rather do it sooner than later.   Both Mercurial and BitBucket make one fundamental assumption: 1 repo = 1 project. If I have a project that has a dependency (a library) which is shared by many projects, this assumption gets in the way. Now it is no longer possible to have a separate BitBucket page for each project while still being able to commit atomic revisions to multiple projects. If I put all the projects into one repo, they all become one “project” on BitBucket. If I put them in separate repos, it is no longer possible to know which version of the library project was in use at revision X of a dependent project. How is this situation normally solved on BitBucket, or is there explicitly no support for this common scenario?

Worse, usually someone has burnt a few hours trying to figure out what happened... So, we would like To do code review BEFORE delivery into the 'master'. • How to package a file into .deb?

  I'm trying to a make a simple .deb package, which would basically edit a config of another package I listed as a dependency. I added the required manipulations to the postinstall file. The problem is I can't find a way to package an example config, which should be copied and edited from the postinstall script. At the moment I just have a folder with the sample config, of which I'm creating a tar.gz and orig.tar.gz, then dh_make in that folder, edit the generated files and run debuild. However if I open the resulting .deb file with an archive manager, I can see that the sample file was not included at all.

In his recent screencast, Adam Bien explained how a Java EE 6 project can be easily created at command-line using Maven 3. The screencast walks through the process of creating the project using command-line. • Plan variable and call dependencies

  I'd like to write down the design of my program to understand the dependencies and calls better. I know there are class diagrams which show inheritance and attribute variables. However I'd also like to document the input parameters to method functions and in particular which calls the methods function executes inside (e.g. on the input parameters). Also sometimes it might be useful to show how actual objects are connected (if there is a standard structure). This way I can have a better understanding of the modules and design before starting to program. Can you suggest a method to do this software design? It should be one-to-one to programming code structure so that I really notice all quirks beforehand (instead of high-level design where thing are hard to implement without further work). Maybe some special diagram or tool or a combination? It is static dependency and call design rather than time dependent execution monitoring. (I use Python if you have any specialized recommendations).

  I tried to follow the instructions on the opera page, but it didn't work. I was assuming the base install should be the same for 64-bit, but it doesn't look so.
