  • Excel VBA: Alternate Row Color in Range

    I spent a VERY long time today looking up a method to alternate row colors within a specified range. There really isn't a lot out there and to be honest what I found just looked over-complicated. So, I decided to stop acting like a shameless 'script-kiddy' and put the below sample together: Sub AlternateRowColors() Dim lastRow as Long lastRow = Range("A1").End(xlDown).Row For Each Cell In Range("A1:A" & lastRow) ''change range accordingly If Cell.Row Mod 2 = 1 Then ''highlights row 2,4,6 etc|= 0 highlights 1,3,5 Cell.Interior.ColorIndex = 15 ''color to preference Else Cell.Interior.ColorIndex = xlNone ''color to preference End If Next Cell End Sub Now I know that works, but I was wondering if there's a simpler method? If so, please do tell because I'm very eager to learn simplification as I have a tendency to write verbose code at present.     I've a simple table with some amount and interval in sec by date and product name. Month | Product | SUM of Amount | AVG of Interval in sec -------------------------------------------------------- 05-'12| Prod A | 13 | 5 05-'12| Prod B | 4 | 5 05-'12| Prod C | 18 | 5 So far So good... Now i want to add and extra column to my Pivot table with gives me the outcome of SUM of Amount / AVG of Interval in sec Adding a calculated value =SUM(Amount)/AVERAGE(Interval) is not giving me the right values. Exel gives me.   • Prevent Excel from evaluating unneeded expressions in OR()

    IF(OR(ISNA(MATCH(8,B10:B17,0)),MATCH(8,B10:B17,0)>8),"",...BLAH...) I understand how to fix this problem by rearranging my formula. I have it the way it is to show this point. You can see the OR() statement checks to see if the first MATCH() returns NA. When it does, OR() should automatically return TRUE and not evaluate the second MATCH() because conditions have been met for the OR() to return true no matter what other arguments there are. You'll notice that the first and second MATCH() functions do the same thing. What's happening is the entire function is returning NA because the second MATCH() is executing even though it doesn't have to, the OR() has been satisfied with one TRUE, therefore the function should return "". Is this a bug or is this intentional?

    I am trying to validate a file that is uploaded by the user using the code below. The error handler checks the top row of the uploaded file for three specific column names. If one or more of the column names is not present, the program should return a prompt to the user notifying them which column(s) are missing from the file that they uploaded and then close the file. There are a couple issues with my current VBA code that I am seeking help with: The prompt doesn't specify which column(s) are missing to the user.   • Exporting to CSV/Excel in Java

    I'm trying to export data into a CSV file through Java and I've got some code to do it but it doesn't seem to be outputting the CSV file. Could someone tell me what's wrong? What I would like to do is rather than saving the file somewhere, I would like it to be directly exported to the user. EDIT: Just in case it's not clear, I don't want the file to be saved anywhere but would like it to be outputted automatically to the user i.e. they click export and get the "Run/Save results.csv" window and they open the file.     I need to create a table with the following structure: Applicant | Test 1 | Test 2 | Test 3 | Test 4 | Test 5 | Test 6 | 1 | A | C | D | E | F | B | 2 | C | B | A | E | D | F | 3 | C | A | F | G | B | D | .... | | | | | | | Basically, test 1 - 6 can be any letter between A and F. I want a Macro (or some other method) by which I can generate this table, with 200 applicants, where the tests are completely randomised. Anyone know how to do this?

  • Escaping Generics with T4 Templates

    I've been doing some work with T4 templates lately and ran into an issue which I couldn't find an answer to anywhere.  I finally figured it out, so I thought I'd share the solution. I was trying to generate a code class with a T4 template which used generics The end result a method like: public IEnumerator GetEnumerator()             {                 return new TableEnumerator<Table>(_page);             } the related section of the T4 template looks like this:  public IEnumerator GetEnumerator()             {                 return new TableEnumerator<#=renderClass.Name#>(_page);             } But this of course is missing the Generic Syntax for < > which T4 complains about because < > are reserved. using syntax like <#<#><#=renderClass.Name#><#=<#> won't work becasue the TextTransformation engine chokes on them.  resulting in : Error 2 The number of opening brackets ('<#') does not match the number of closing brackets ('#>')  even trying to escape the characters won't work: <#\<#><#=renderClass.Name#><#\<#> this results in: Error 4 A Statement cannot appear after the first class feature in the template. Only boilerplate, expressions and other class features are allowed after the first class feature block.  The final solution delcares a few strings to represent the literals like this: <#+    void RenderCollectionEnumerator(RenderCollection renderClass)  {     string open = "<";   string close =">"; #>    public partial class <#=renderClass.Name#> : IEnumerable         {             private readonly PageBase _page;             public <#=renderClass.Name#>(PageBase page)             {                 _page = page;             }             public IEnumerator GetEnumerator()             {                 return new TableEnumerator<#=open#><#=renderClass.Name#><#=close#>(_page);             }         } <#+  }  #> This works, and everyone is happy, resulting in an automatically generated class enumerator, complete with generics! Hopefully this will save someone some time :)

    Intro This is the first in a series of small articles about what is new in Silverlight 4 and Expression Blend 4. The series is build around a open source demo application SilverAmp which is available on http://SilverAmp.CodePlex.com.   MVVM Project and Item Templates Expression Blend has got a new project template to get started with a Model-View-ViewModel project  easily. The template provides you with a View and a ViewModel bound together. It also adds the ViewModel to the SampleData of your project. It is available for both Silverlight and Wpf. To get going, start a new project in Expression Blend and select Silverlight DataBound Application from the Silverlight project type. In this case I named the project DemoTest1. The solution now contains several folders: SampleData; which contains a data to show in Blend ViewModels; starts with one file, MainViewModel.cs Views; containing MainView.xaml with codebehind used for binding with the MainViewModel class. and your regular App.xaml and MainPage.xaml The MainViewModel class contains a sample property and a sample method. Both the property and the method are used in the MainView control. The MainView control is a regular UserControl and is placed in the MainPage. You can continue on building your applicaition by adding your own properties and methods to the ViewModel and adding controls to the View. Adding Views with ViewModels is very easy too. The guys at Microsoft where nice enough to add a new Item template too: a UserControl with ViewModel. If you add this new item to the root of your solution it will add the .xaml file to the views folder and a .cs file to the ViewModels folder. Conclusion The databound Application project type is a great to get your MVVM based project started.   • How to organize Drupal templates?

    I created a few custom templates while modifying a theme (Acquia Prosper), and my usual practice is to put all my templates in this fashion: theme-name/templates/page/page-front.tpl.php But it didn't quite work this time. So I'm wondering why. I looked through the templates.php for a clue, but there is nothing there. My base theme where I used this organization was genesis, and in that theme it seems to work, but not in Acquia Prosper. Can anyone shed some light on this?

    Duplicate: Where can I find free WPF controls and control templates? I am looking for some recommendations on good places to find libraries of controls/templates/styles for WPF. I know about the usual places like Infragistics, but it seems to me that there should be some kind of community effort by now to share nice, clean, well written controls for WPF controls. I am not big on the design side, and it would be nice to fill out my personal libraries with some nice examples from people who are better at design. Any ideas/recommendations?

    I would like to edit the ASP.NET MVC templates for Visual Studio so that any new action or controller created has a specific piece of code within it by default. For instance, I'd like to replace the generated: public ActionResult MyAction() { return View(); } with a specific coding standard we prefer to use within in my team. eg: public ActionResult About() { try { DoStuff(); return View(); } catch(Exception) { HandleException(); } } I've looked through the filesystem, but I cannot find anything specific that relates to the ASP.NET mvc templates. Anyone know where they are?

  • Virtual Lab part 2&ndash;Templates, Patterns, Baselines

    Once you have a good virtualization platform chosen, whether it is a desktop, server or laptop environment, the temptation is to build “X”.  “X” may be a SharePoint lab, a Virtual Cluster, an AD test environment or some other cool project that you really need RIGHT NOW.  That would be doing it wrong. My grandfather taught woodworking and cabinetmaking for twenty-seven years at a trade school in Alabama.  He was the first instructor hired at that school and the only teacher for the first two years.  His students built tables, chairs, and workbenches so the school could start its HVAC courses.   Visiting as a child, I also noticed many extra “helper” stands, benches, holders, and gadgets all built from wood.  What does that have to do with a virtual lab, you ask?  Well, that is the same approach you should take.  Build stuff that you will use.  Not for solving a particular problem, but to let the Virtual Lab be part of your normal troubleshooting toolkit. Start with basic copies of various Operating Systems.  Load and patch server and desktop OS environments.  This also helps build your collection of ISO files, another essential element of a virtual Lab.  Once you have these “baseline” images, you can use your Virtualization software’s snapshot capability to freeze the image.  Clone the snapshot and you have a brand new fully patched machine in mere moments.  You may have to sysprep some of the Microsoft OS environments if you are going to create a domain environment or experiment with clustering.  That is still much faster than loading and patching from scratch. So once you have a stock of raw materials (baseline images in this case) where should you start.  Again, my grandfather’s workshop gives us the answer.  In the shop it was workbenches and tables to hold large workpieces that made the equipment more useful.  In a Windows environment the same role falls to the fundamental network services:  DHCP, DNS, Active Directory, Routing, File Services, and Storage services.  Plan your internal network setup.  Build out an AD controller with all the features listed.  Make the actual domain an isolated domain so it will not care about where you take it.  Add the Microsoft iSCSI target.  Once you have this single system, you can leverage it for almost any network environment beyond a simple stand-alone system. Having these templates and fundamental infrastructure elements ready to run means I can build a quick lab in minutes instead of hours.  My solutions are well-tested, my processes fully documented with screenshots, and my plans validated well before I have to make any changes to client systems.  the work I put in is easily returned in increased value and client satisfaction.

  • Cool Tools You Can Use: Validation Templates for PeopleSoft Contracts Processes

    This is the first in a series of postings we’ll be making under the heading of Cool Tools You Can Use. Our PeopleSoft product management team identified the need for this series after reflecting on the many conversations we have each year with our PeopleSoft community members. During these conversations, we were discovering that customers and implementation partners were often not aware that solutions exist to the problems they were trying to address and that the solutions were readily available at no additional charge. Thus, the Cool Tools You Can Use series will describe the business challenge we’ve heard, the PeopleSoft solution to the challenge, and how you can learn more about the solution so that everyone can be sure to make full use of what PeopleSoft applications have to offer. The first cool tool we’ll look at is the Validation Template for PeopleSoft Contracts Process Requests, which was first released in December 2013 as part of PeopleSoft Contracts 9.2 Update Image 4. The business issue our customers highlighted to us is the need to tightly control but easily configure and manage the scope of data that any user can process when initiating a process. Control of each user’s span of impact is essential to reducing billing reconciliation issues, passing span of authority audits, and reducing (or even eliminating) the frequency of unexpected process results.  Setting Up the Validation Template for a PeopleSoft Contracts Process With the validation template, organizations can easily and quickly ensure the software restricts the scope of transactions a user can affect and gives organizations the confidence to know that business processes are being governed effectively. Additionally, this control of PeopleSoft Contracts process requests can be applied and easily maintained and adjusted from a web browser thereby enabling analysts to administer the rules without having to engage software developers to customize the software. During the field validation template setup, an analyst specifies the combinations of fields that must contain values when a user tries to setup a run control and initiate a PeopleSoft Contracts process from a process request page. For example, for the Process Limits component, an organization could require that users enter a valid combination of values for the business unit, contract, and contract type fields or a value in the contract administrator field. Until the user enters a valid combination of entries on the process request page, he cannot launch the process. With the validation template activated for process request pages, organizations can be confident that PeopleSoft Contracts users will not accidentally begin generating invoices or triggering other revenue management processes for transactions beyond their scope of authority.   • Updating My Online Boggle Solver Using jQuery Templates and WCF

    With WebForms, each ASP.NET page's rendered output includes a <form> element that performs a postback to the same page whenever a Button control within the form is clicked, or whenever the user modifies a control whose AutoPostBack property is set to True. This model simplifies web page development, but carries with it some costs - namely, the large amount of data exchanged between the client and the server during a postback. On postback the browser sends the values of all of its form fields (including hidden ones, like view state, which may be quite large) to the server; the server then sends back the entire contents of the web page. While there are some scenarios where this amount of information needs to be exchanged, in many cases the user has performed some action that requires far less information to be exchanged. With a little bit of forethought and code we can have the browser and server exchange much less data, which leads to more responsive web pages and an improved user experience. Over the past several weeks I've been writing an article series on accessing server-side data from client script. Rather than rely solely on forms and postbacks, many websites use JavaScript code to asynchronously communicate with the server in response to the page loading or some other user action. The server, upon receiving the JavaScript-initiated request, returns just the data needed by the browser, which the browser then seamlessly integrates into the web page. There are a variety of technologies and techniques that can be employed to provide both the needed server- and client-side functionality. Last week's article, Using WCF Services with jQuery and the ASP.NET Ajax Library, explored using the Windows Communication Foundation, or WCF, to serve data from the web server and showed how to consume such a service using both the ASP.NET Ajax Library and jQuery. In a previous 4Guys article, Creating an Online Boggle Solver, I built an application to find all solutions in a game of Boggle. (Boggle is a word game trademarked by Parker Brothers and Hasbro that involves several players trying to find as many words as they can in a 4x4 grid of letters.) This article takes the lessons learned in Using WCF Services with jQuery and the ASP.NET Ajax Library and uses them to update the user interface for my online Boggle solver, replacing the existing WebForms-based user interface with a more modern and responsive interface.
